Hulu New Releases: June 2023
Image
It’s summer time on Hulu and that can only mean one thing. With its list of new releases for June 2023, Hulu is bringing back last summer’s unexpected hit.

FX’s The Bear season 2 premieres all episodes on June 22. If you’re not already captivated by this intense culinary story about the little Italian beef shop that could, definitely catch up now. This time around, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and friends will attempt a major foodie rebrand. The only other Hulu series of note this month is the docuseries The Age of Influence. Premiering on June 5, this doc will examine the dark side of influencer culture.

Just like its corporate partner Disney+, Hulu will premiere Eva Longoria’s directorial debut, Flamin’ Hot, in June 9. The movie tells the true story of Frito-Lay janitor Richard Montañez (Jesse Garcia) who created an iconic snack that forever changed the food industry. Also...

After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.

Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:

It’s 25 years later and the men and women of Sheffield, England, are in reboot mode, navigating life and family. Hear Sting Preview New Album With Single ‘If It’s Love’
Image
Sting will release a new album, The Bridge, on November 19th via A&m/Interscope/Cherrytree Records. The musician has previewed the release with a breezy, upbeat new single, “If It’s Love.”

“I’m certainly not the first songwriter to equate falling in or out of love with an incurable sickness, nor will I be the last,” Sting said in a statement. “’’f It’s Love’ is my addition to that canon where the tropes of metaphorical symptoms, diagnosis, and downright incapacity are all familiar enough to make each of us smile ruefully.

The Sorcerer And The White Snake on UK DVD
Don’t know how the hell we missed this, but then it doesn’t help that they changed its name, and it was released with more of a whimper….than a Bang. The Jet Li starring fantasy epic The Emperor and the White Snake has just dropped on UK DVD!? If old school wire-fu is your bag then don’t miss this one. Synopsis: Young physician Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) falls in love with a beautiful woman when she saves him from drowning, but unbeknownst to him she is in fact Madame White Snake, a thousand-year-old snake demon (Shengyi Huang) appearing in the guise of a woman. Sorceress Fa Hai (Jet Li), realising White Snake's true identity, vows to destroy her in a bid to protect Xu Xian and save his soul - but she has underestimated the power of White Snake's love for Xu Xian.

This week's new films
The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (U)

(Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt, 2012, UK/Us) Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton. 88 mins

Aardman sets sail on seas of clay, in what feels more like an animated Blackadder than Pirates Of The Caribbean. Grant's inept rogue is good company, falling foul (or rather fowl) of Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin in a nonsensical, if inconsequential, romp that's lifted, as usual, by Aardman's eccentric details and fine craftsmanship.

Into The Abyss (12A)

(Werner Herzog, 2011, Us/UK/Ger) 107 mins

Herzog studies a Texas homicide from all angles, building less a polemic against the death penalty than a humane survey of death and loss.

This Is Not A Film (U)

(Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Jafar Panahi, 2010, Ira) 75 mins

Panahi boldly defies his own house arrest by "not making" a film within his apartment, the confinement provoking a profound questioning of cinema itself.

The Kid With A Bike (12A)

(Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, 2011, Bel/Fra/Ita) Thomas Doret, Cécile de France, Egon di Mateo, Jérémie Renier, Fabrizio Rongione. 87 mins

Once again, the Dardenne brothers pull you into the world of a poor, marginalised soul and keep you there, without resorting to any fancy tricks. How do they do it? In this case it's impulsive young Cyril: no mother, rejected by his father, no friends, and only his talismanic bike to cling to. What's to become of him? It sounds rather worthy but, in fact, it's an effortless watch – powerfully acted, paced like an action movie, and shifting into a higher gear of spiritual grace when it needs to.

The Hunger Games (12A)

The Sorcerer And The White Snake Jet Li – Hong Kong Movie Review
In a world of magic and demons, a sorcerer (actually he’s an abbot) played by the renowned Jet Li and his apprentice (Zhang Wen) roam the earth in pursuit of malevolent entities. Once caught, these entities are then confined within the walls of Lei Feng Pagoda to reflect on their past deeds and hopefully change their wicked ways.

A White Snake female spirit/demon (Shengyi Huang) falls for a mortal after saving his life from a cruel twist-of-fate engineered by her twin, the Green Snake (Charlene Choi). The man in question is Xu Xian, a herbalist/ferryman, played by Raymond Lam. And so, the snake-ladies venture out of the safety of their mountains to find White’s mystery man, ever increasing their chances of running into the magic monk duo. But Jet Li better be careful ‘cuz hell hath no fury like a snakewoman scorned.

China Beat: Fantasies Fly at Holiday Box Office
Now that Golden Week is over and China's colossal work force is back to the proverbial grindstone, now would be the perfect time to see what kept the movie-going public entertained during the national holidays. This time last year the two notable releases were Tsui Hark's Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame and Su Chao Bin's Reign Of Assassins. This year it was again a couple of fantastical flights of fancy that topped the charts. After the first weekend the clear frontrunner was Ching Siu Tung's The Sorcerer And The White Snake - reworking the same source material as Tsui Hark's beloved Green Snake from 1993. Jet Li stars as Fa Hai, alongside Raymond Lam, with Charlene Choi and Eva Huang playing the...

Sitges 2011: The Sorcerer And The White Snake Review
It's been a while since we last saw Tony Ching - or Ching Siu-tung, if you prefer - directing a movie. And being someone with such an impressive filmography, both as director and martial arts choreographer, it's easy to understand the expectations for his latest film, The Sorcerer And The White Snake. If you add the presence of Jet Li as the titular sorcerer you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect of the movie. The story starts with the young herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) as he's making a trip to the mountains to gather some herbs. When he suddenly falls into a lake, the demon White Snake - taking the form of the beautiful woman - jumps in to rescue...

A Chinese Ghost Story and a Monstrous Presence: A Movie Review
Director: Wilson Yip.

Cast: Louis Koo, Yifei Liu and Shao-qun Yu.

Love can be a bittersweet enemy in the remake of the 1987 Tsui Hark classic, A Chinese Ghost Story (倩女幽魂).. At this movie’s core is a tale of romance, of how a simple tax collector/scholar, Ning Choi-Shan (Yu Shaoqun), falls in love with a female spirit, Siu Sin (Liu Yifei). She is unfortunately enslaved by an evil tree demon. With the help of a monk/master swordsman Yin Chek Ha, (Louis Koo), he frees her. In the original, there were complications since the lovers are mortal and immortal.

That gets changed in the update. In Chek Ha’s younger years, during his training to be a monk, he fell for Siu Sin as well. He had to make a choice, and instead of killing her, it is his duty, he magically took away her memories of him. This...

China Beat: Venice fuels Taiwan feud
There have been mixed emotions in the Greater China region this week following the announcement from Italy of this year's Venice International Film Festival line-up. Jet Li's latest, The Sorcerer And The White Snake from director Ching Siu Tung, will be playing out of competition, while Ann Hui's A Simple Life will compete for the Golden Lion along with 20 other films, including Wei Te-Sheng's Seediq Bale. We have given over a fair few column inches to Wei's upcoming reconstruction of Taiwan's famous Wushe incident that saw a tribe of some 300 indigenous aborigines attempt to fend off the invading Japanese army in 1930. Opening in Taiwan next month as two separate films, Seediq Bale will screen at Venice in a single 135-minute version...

2011 Venice Film Festival Lineup Is Incredble
Hot on the heels of the release of the first wave of films announced to screen at the Toronto Film Festival, comes the main lineup for the 68th Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10. There are a few highly anticipated films that appear here that are not yet scheduled for Tiff including the spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson. Also on the list is Roman Polanski‘s Carnage and the latest film from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Dogtooth made our best end year list both in 2009 and 2010. Personally my most anticipated film is A Dangerous Method by my favourite filmmaker David Cronenberg.

Check out the full list is after the break.

Venice Lineup Includes Films From Cronenberg, Akerman, Polanski, & Andrea Arnold
Just a few days after Tiff had announced its first 50 films from this year’s festival slate, the Venice Film Festival has announced their own lineup, and I must say, it’s one hell of a collective.

Criterion Collection nuts will have a field day here, as various directors from the collection will be bringing their new films to Italy this year.

First up, in competition, David Cronenberg will be taking his new film, A Dangerous Method, to Venice this year, making it one of the bigger fall festival season players this year. Steve McQueen’s Shame will play this year, as will Andrea Arnold’s (Fish Tank) Wuthering Heights. Roman Polanski will debut his latest film, Carnage, at Venice this year, as will Todd Solondz, who brings Dark Horse this year.

Out of competition, Chantal Akerman and Whit Stillman will debut their next projects, La Folie Almayer and Damsels In Distress respectively.

2011 Venice Film Festival Lineup Includes ‘Carnage,’ ‘A Dangerous Method,’ and ‘Dogtooth’ Director’s Latest
George Clooney
Hot on the heels of the release of a massive batch of films [1] that will appear in the Toronto Film Festival, we've got the main lineup for the 68th Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10. We knew that George Clooney's The Ides of March would open the fest (the trailer premiered last night and you can see it here [2]) and this list confirms quite a few films that we imagined would be playing Venice. Our very much anticipated spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson is on the list, as is Roman Polanski's tense closed-room drama Carnage, starring Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. And there is Alps, the second film from polarizing Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Dogtooth shocked, entertained and angered festival audiences in 2009. The full list is after the break.

Venice Film Fest unveils full slate
By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: The Venice Film Festival unveiled its full line up this morning, programming a number of big-ticket titles with serious awards dreams.

As expected, there is overlap between the 68th Venice Fest and the first wave of films announced for the Toronto International Film Festival, from Madonna’s King Edward VIII drama “W.E.” to David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method.” But Venice also boasts a few films that Tiff does not have on its schedule … yet. That would be Tomas Alfredson’s anticipated “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and Roman Polanski’s “Carnage.”

The fest will open on Aug. 31 with the world premiere of George Clooney’s political drama “The Ides of March.” We have a full roster of films in and out of competition for the Venice Film Festival below:

Venice 2011 Line-Up Includes ‘Tinker Tailor,’ ‘Carnage,’ ‘Wuthering Heights,’ ‘Alps’ and Many More
I always find it interesting to see what Toronto International Film Festival gets compared to Venice. There is certainly some crossover for the latter fest that begins a few days before Toronto, but Venice will usually get a handful of exclusive premieres. We already got Toronto’s initial line-up, and now Deadline reports on Venice.

At first glance, they are getting the big premiere of Tomas Alfredson‘s Let The Right One In follow-up, the spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. They also get Andrea Arnold‘s Fish Tank follow-up Wuthering Heights, as well as Ami Canaan Maan‘s debut Texas Killing Fields. Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Dogtooth follow-up Alps will be premiered there as well, along with Roman Polanski‘s Carnage. Steven Soderbergh‘s Contagion and Madonna‘s W.E. will be showing out of competition. Check out the solid list below.

Venice Film Festival 2011 Line-Up Revealed
The line-up for the 2011 Venice Film Festival was unveiled a little earlier today and this year’s edition looks particularly stacked on the English-language side of things with a large number of dramatic outputs from the U.K. and U.S.

Dozens and dozens of high-intrigue fare are set to be premiering over the two week event which kicks off proceedings on August 31st with the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March as an in-competition film. A trailer was released last night and you can see it Here.

The other big headliners include;

Working Title’s attempt to bring the classic John Le Carre novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to the big screen for the first time (though there was an amazing 70′s t.v. series with Alec Guinness that this film will need to go to some quality to beat) has been on our radar every...

The Sorcerer And The White Snake Trailer: The Most Special Effect Is Jet Li's Voice
After taking some time off to focus on his charitable work following his experiences in the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004 Jet Li is apparently back in a big way. Li is again toplining major martial arts pictures in China and Hong Kong with projects ranging from the high end - ie Tsui Hark's Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate - to pulp such as Tony Ching Siu-Tung's The Sorcerer And The White Snake.Widely regarded as one of the finest fight choreographers in the world, Ching's directorial output is far less consistent. His current effort is a special effects fueled fantasy epic in which Li plays a monk who struggles to save a young man who has unwittingly fallen in love with a snake...
