With Paramount Pictures finding success in the horror genre with their most recent film A Quiet Place, they are now moving forward with a new low-budget horror movie called Crawl. The movie is being produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Alexandre Aja.
The film is described as a self-contained thriller that "centers on a young woman who, while struggling to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped inside a flooding house and fighting for her life against Florida's most savage and feared predators."
Those savage a feared predators are alligators. That certainly sounds like it would be an intense situation to be in! Aja wrote the most recent draft of the script and I'm curious to see how the movie turns out. Aja has made some entertaining and wild films in his career and this seems like the kind of film project that is right up his ally.

According to Deadline, horror veterans Alexandre Aja and Sam Raimi are teaming up for Crawl, a movie about a woman who gets trapped in a flooded house during a hurricane and must fight off alligators in order to survive. That means this is a scary house movie, a storm movie, and a woman vs. beast movie, so all it…

Before Avengers: Infinity War entered the scene, Paramount Pictures’ A Quiet Place was enjoying its second weekend perched atop the box office, having earned $21 million between April 20-22.
I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right, it might not seem like much, especially when compared to the gargantuan opening of the McU’s third Avengers installment. Nevertheless, the success of John Krasinski’s near-silent horror film, made on a budget of just $17 million, has been a godsend for the studio, which has struggled at the ticket booth for well over a year.
As a result of the film’s $236 million worldwide gross, Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation last week that a sequel is indeed in the works. However, A Quiet Place 2 won’t be the only low-budget horror to enter production for Paramount this year.

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.

Crawl, directed and produced by the China Brothers (as seen in the video above), sees claustrophobic heat and brooding tension seep from the screen in a character-driven hi-tone chiller set in an unknown rural town. Released on DVD and Blu-ray last week by Arrow Films, we have a full size cinema poster (signed by Paul and Ben China) to give away plus Crawl on DVD or Blu-ray.
Seedy bar owner Slim Walding hires a mysterious Croatian hit man to murder a local garage owner over a shady business deal gone bad. The crime is indeed carried out by the stone-faced stranger but a planned double-crossing backfires when an innocent waitress, Marilyn (Georgina Haig), becomes involved. Much of what makes this study in slow-burning terror so nail-bitingly effective is the silence that director China employs for long periods, coupled with the deep, shadowy corners of the picture frame – and minds of the captivating lead characters.

★☆☆☆☆ Every now and then, a press quote on a film poster can ring so falsely as to make you question whether the individual cited had, in fact, watched the same film. A hasty comparison made between Paul China's abject Crawl (2011) and the grittiest thriller produce of the Coen brothers (we're talking Blood Simple/No Country for Old Men territory) would be one such example. Of course, differing opinions should always be taken into consideration. However, China's directorial debut is so devoid of fresh ideas - and, quite frankly, dull in its execution - that any similarities between this and the aforementioned Joel and Ethan classics can, at best, be dismissed as purely cosmetic.

Paul China’s feature debut Crawl aims to do for the Australian Outback what the Coen Brothers have done for America’s Deep South, pulling back the unassuming veneer to reveal an underbelly of savage violence, shady deals and sleaze. Though minimalist to a fault, there’s plenty of tension to keep this grisly Aussie thriller bounding along.
It all begins, as it inevitably does, with a murder. A man known only as “the Croatian” (George Shevtsov) arrives in the sleepy town to perform a hit on a local mechanic whose business deal went South (no pun intended). Meanwhile, Marilyn (Georgina Haig), a beautiful young woman, finishes her shift at work and heads home, fully expecting her long-time boyfriend, Travis, to propose to her when he arrives back at their shared abode. She waits, and she waits, but of course, a fatal car accident ensures that...

The Coen Brothers, in particular “Blood Simple” and “No Country for Old Men”, are evoked in “Crawl”, an Australian shot suspense thriller revolving around a hit gone wrong in a small outback town. Furthering Coen comparisons, the film was also a fraternal affair, written and directed by Brit Paul China and produced by his brother Ben China, marking their debut. Originally released in 2011 and having played at a variety of genre festivals, including Screamfest in the Us, where it picked up several awards, the film lands shortly on region 2 DVD and Blu Ray via Arrow Films. The film kicks off with a laconic, nameless Croatian hitman (George Shevtsov) casually knocking off a garage owner at the behest of seedy nightclub owner called Slim Walding (Paul Holmes) over a business falling out. Although the killing and payoff seem to go exactly as planned, on his way out of town the hitman...

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

Featuring: George Shevtsov and Georgina Haig
Filmmakers Paul and Benjamin China are a filmmaking team of brothers who have stuck to their guns to create a thriller, a movie that has subsequently played all over the world in the festival circuit. Crawl is a well told story that is also visually interesting.
While this particular film was picked up for distribution representation during ScreamFest 2011 in Los Angeles, I wasn’t able to see it until it made its way to Cannes 2012. I worried that I’d be the only one who didn’t get it. Luckily for me, I became part of the Crawl army.
It is important when going into your viewing of Crawl to understand that it isn’t a gory torture porn. Crawl is more of a throwback to horror of old — which, personally, is my favorite type of horror subgenre.

It’s time for another entry in our regular feature, the poster round-up, and yet again it is another jam-packed update, with new posters for Stitches, Ted, Prometheus, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Babymakers, Excision, Crawl, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Mission Blacklist, The Sweeney and The Secret Vilage.
Stitches
Stitches concerns Richard ‘Stitches’ Grindle, a jaded workaday kids’ birthday clown, whose one-liners are witty in a way that’s just not for kids. Stitches falls victim to a fatal party mishap at the hands of a group of particularly nasty children. Years later, the group of now teenagers attend a party at which Stitches is the uninvited guest of honor. Naturally, things take a downward, bloody turn… And yes, the Ross Noble named on the poster Is the British comedian!

I don’t know whether it’s heartening or disheartening that Australian filmmakers keep producing such ace product, when they’re so rarely rewarded in their own country. Sure, there are the obvious hits The Square and Animal Kingdom, but then there’s all the other underrated gems like Noise (2007), Red Hill, Acolytes, and The Loved Ones. Perhaps sensing the international appeal of Aussie crime films, Deadline is reporting that Epic Pictures Group has done one better than any local vendor and nabbed the international distribution rights fledgling Australian indie title Crawl before it shows at Cannes.
I hadn’t heard of Crawl prior to this, but the description of it was enough to make me seek out the trailer, and boy, am I glad I did. If that 90-second trampy-tease is anything to go by, this will continue the run of first-rate thrillers coming from my angry little part of the world.
