While it's our general policy to not report on Kickstarter projects for various reasons, Kiss the Devil in the Dark, the new and wrapped feature from the creators of the award-winning short An Evening with My Comatose Mother, is just simply too good to pass up.
The flick's in post, needs your help, and we think it's something you absolutely need to see.
Starring Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth), Dameon Clarke, and Amrita Acharia, Kiss the Devil in the Dark is co-directed and produced by Jonathan Martin and Rebecca Martin from a script by the latter and revolves around the character of Marcus (Clarke), a powerful sorcerer who, desperate to save his dying wife, makes a deal with the demon Dagon (Jones) to save her soul. Dagon, however, has more in mind for Marcus than just a simple exchanging of souls. With seemingly no other choice, Marcus accepts, thus catapulting him...

Filmmaker Jonathan Martin, whose short film An Evening With My Comatose Mother has racked up 67 film festival awards and is now slated for a big-budget feature version, gave us a look today at the "Electric Light" music video he directed for the band Muscle Hawk. Check it out!
Written, directed and produced by Martin with cinematography by Derek Pueblo, the filmmaker collaborated with his Comatose co-conspirators Chris Hanson (Makeup Effects) and Alex Johnson (Visual Effects), as he did with editor Jeff Yeats, with whom he co-edited. Rachael Domingo and Kish Carter provided the outlandish costumes as worn by the video’s creatures.
Shot over the course of three days in Utah, Martin told us of the "Electric Light" production, “This video is a labor of love. It contains all the things I love: sci-fi, portals, film references, great parties, great music, sexy and creepy aliens, and more. I hope you...

It’s All Hallow’s Eve, and a beautiful woman named Dorothy Pritchard (Wendy Macy) is looking to put a little money in her bank account by housesitting for Alice Poe (Michele Turner Wilson) and her husband Russell (Rick Macy). They want to step away for the evening so they can go to the Governor’s Mansion for a Halloween Ball, and they won’t be back until all hours of the early morning.
Alice failed to mention to Dorothy that she would have to tend to the needs of her 92-year-old comatose and bedridden mother (Missy Hill) who lives in the upstairs room. She loves dolls, so much so that she is kept company by them in her bed, with the favorite being a creepy jester.

While attending the World Premiere of Rosewood Lane last night, I ran into Jonathan Martin, the director of the short film An Evening with My Comatose Mother. I was not able to catch his flick, but he did show me the badass trailer on his iPad, and it looks like a cross between The Legacy and Suspiria.
When Dorothy is invited over to the Poe’s on Halloween night, no one ever told her about their decomposing, comatose mother living in the upstairs bedroom. She’ll wish somebody had when the storm hits, and Mother wakes up.

The busiest month of the year for horror fans started with multiple events to choose from, including the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival in beautiful Big Bear Lake, California. The mountain location, with its vast forested areas, is perfect for telling campfire tales or watching horror movies. The festival itself took place in the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center with nighttime activities held on a ship, at a local nightclub, and in a restaurant, all great locations to have fun and be spooked.
The festival hosted workshops by some of the horror business’ greatest such as writer, magazine publisher, director, and producer Kerry O’Quinn; composer Harry Manfredini; and Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller. Feature films (classic and new), shorts, and medium-length films were all shown as part of the festival’s film competition and special screenings. The 11th annual Coney Island Film Festival, which was held last weekend on Sept. 23-25, gave out a total of 10 awards to both feature films and shorts.
Every year, Ciff loves to honor the quirky little seaside resort the fest is held in, showing a selection of films that were screened in the ‘hood. This year, the Best “Made in Coney Island” Award went to Daniel Turkewitz’s A Day in the Life of Coney Island, a lyrical 20-minute documentary that captures life at the beach and on the boardwalk.
The Best Documentary Feature Award was also a Coney Island-themed film, Charles Denson’s The Last Immortal, a profile of reformed gang member Keith Suber, who founded an organization to keep kids out of trouble. Meanwhile, Darin Beckstead’s New York-based comedy Somebody’s Hero took home Best Feature.

The 11th annual Coney Island Film Festival, running Sept. 23-25, offers an exquisite blend of freak show, burlesque and cinematic oddities, featuring movies about reformed gang members, unwitting superheroes, rock ‘n’ roll heaven and tons and tons of short films.
The fest opens with the portrait of a real-life Coney Island badass, Keith Suber, a reformed gang member who now teaches kids that violence isn’t the solution to their problems in the documentary The Last Immortal, directed by Charles Denson.
However, the highlight of the festival — in Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s opinion — is the headbangin’ documentary Heavy Metal Picnic by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn, which beautifully relives the glory days of ’80s era rock ‘n’ roll Maryland in all its raucous glory. Featuring footage from an outrageous backwoods farm concert and a reunion among its (slightly) more mature participants. Read the official Bad Lit documentary review here.
