The Boys Love (‘Bl’) genre is getting bigger. Big enough for producers to organize fan meets similar to those for Asia’s mainstream TV shows or pop music stars.

In an event organized at Westar, Taipei, the Taiwan-based Lgbtqi-streaming platform GagaOOLala hosted its first fan meet for its original Bl musical series “First Note of Love” on Saturday. The event drew a crowd of some 500 and marked the first leg of a planned tour that will include Seoul, Hong Kong, Macau and Bangkok in 2025.

The event saw lead actors Charles Tu, Michael Chang, Tim Liu and Thai star ‘Jame’ Kasama Kranjanawattana showcase their artistic talents, perform popular tracks from the series, choreographed dances, and fan-favorite duets. They provided more than ten entertaining acts over the course of the event.

Martin Phillips, whose New Zealand band the Chills served as an influence on R.E.M. and Pavement, has died. He was 61.

His death was announced in a statement posted Sunday on the Chills’ social media accounts. No cause or date was given. New Zealand’s Otago Daily Times reported that Phillips had recently been admitted to Dunedin Hospital with liver problems.

The Chills were known for jangly guitar pop. Phillips was the band’s only constant member in a career that attracted an international following across four decades.

Neil Finn of Crowded House issued a statement Sunday, calling Phillips “one of Nz’s greatest songwriters” and described him as having been “fascinated by and devoted to the magic and mystery of music.”

Phillips formed the Chills in 1980 with his sister, Rachel, and the band signed to Flying Nun Records in 1982. The band’s first studio album, Brave Words, arrived in 1987.

Similar to its previous installments, The Boys season 4 has opened to a stellar critic score at the Tomatometer, as it’s currently sitting on a comfortable 95% with three episodes in. However, the audience score paints a different picture, as it registers the series’ first rotten audience score with 52%, which is a result of review-bombing from fans, who are stressing the show has gone woke.

This comes after the revelation of Frenchie’s sexuality. But creator Eric Kripke has set the record straight that the character’s queerness is not sudden.

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, which took place in Tokyo on March 2, 2024, announced the winners across numerous categories.

A record breaking 34 million votes were cast by global fans, with Argentina, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Mexico, Spain and the United States being some of the most engaged countries.

“Anime fans from around the world have spoken and collectively, they cast more votes than in the history of the Anime Awards to crown the 2024 winners,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll. “Anime is a powerful force, driving pop culture and connecting global fans and it is a privilege to celebrate and honor this dynamic artform.”

Streaming giant Crunchyroll has announced the nominees for its eighth annual Anime Awards on Jan 18, 2024. Crunchyroll Anime Awards aims to recognize the outstanding achievements in Japanese animation, including honoring creators, musicians, and performances across streaming and theatrical platforms.

Chainsaw Man leads the field with a dominant 25 nominations for Crunchyroll‘s eighth annual Anime Awards, which be handed out in March. It will compete for the marquee Anime of the Year prize against Bocchi the Rock!, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Oshi No Ko and Vinland Saga Season 2.

The fan-voted Anime Awards, which honor the year’s best Japanese animation, also features such disparate categories as Best Romance, Best Slice of Life and Best Voice Artist Performance in nine languages, will be presented March 2 in Tokyo. Three-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion and Japanese singer LiSA will be among the presenters.

Exclusive: Exactly two months after he joined the upcoming CW drama series The Secret Circle as an executive producer, Richard Hatem has been let go for creative differences. Executive producer Kevin Williamson, who came on board the project in February and rewrote the original script by Andrew Miller, is running the series, which he executive produces with Miller and Alloys Entertainment's Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. "Kevin has a vision, and they just didn't see eye-to-eye creatively," a source close to the show said. I understand that Hatem is staying in business with Secret Circle producer Warner Bros TV through a development arrangement, which is now being finalized. It is not clear whether Hatem will be replaced on Secret Circle. Before him, there were two other writing executive producers, Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who had originally developed the project with Miller, but they departed in March after the Williamson's...

The CW has made its picks for the fall and the adaptation of the witchy L.J. Smith series, Secret Circle, helmed by The Vampire Diaries executive producer Kevin Williamson, is a go. However, two other supernatural series Awakening and Heavenly have been passed over.

Secret Circle, a show also based on another series by The Vampire Diaries author, L.J. Smith, stars Britt Robertson (Life Unexpected), Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Natasha Henstridge (Drop Dead Diva, Eli Stone), and Phoebe Tonkin (Smallville).

Awakening was a series described as The Vampire Diaries meets The Walking Dead by Canadian writer-producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis (The Listener).

Heavenly was a show that followed a former angel and an attorney who team up to save people, starring Lauren Cohan (Chuck, The Vampire Diaries) and Ben Aldridge (Lark Rise to Candleford).

Cohan will play Lily DeMarco, “a deceptively young and friendly” young attorney at a legal aid clinic. Her cohort is Dashiel Coffee (played by Ben Aldridge of Lark Rise to Candleford), a “former angel only recently turned human” who tries to save the souls of those Lily saves in court.

Deadline are reporting that The CW have a pilot in development called Heavenly, about a San Francisco attorney called Lily DeMarco (The Vampire Diaries’ Lauren Cohan) who’s partnered by an angel-turned-human Dashiell Coffee (Lark Rise To Candleford’s Ben Aldridge), to save people from jail and their souls from hell.

They are joined by Deputy District Attorney Sasha Nouri (Melissa & George’s Elizabeth Ho) and guided by pastor Owen Moretti (90210′s Ryan Eggold.) The pilot is being written by Richard Hatem (Supernatural, The Dead Zone).

Heavenly has broad similarities to the currently in-development British series Eternal Law, from the co-creators of Life On Mars, which also concerns angels sent to Earth to become lawyers. CW topper Dawn Ostroff may be shepherding her best development season yet, but the veteran programmer is not expected to stick around to see the 2011-12 launch: Ostroff, whose contract is up in June, reportedly informed both CBS Corp chief Leslie Moonves and Warner Bros., Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer that she will leave sometime this summer to return to New York, where her husband’s job is based.
