‘It should be illegal how much fun I’m having’: Lea Salonga on playing Mrs. Lovett and more in ‘Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends’
Image
“It boggles my mind that this is actually happening,” admits Lea Salonga about the recognition she has been receiving for her performance in Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. Hours before joining Gold Derby to discuss the Broadway revue, the actress earned a nomination from the Drama League for Distinguished Performance in addition to her previously announced special recognition for Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre. She will celebrate the honors with her son, whose 19th birthday overlaps with the ceremony, and looks forward to toasting with the cast and crew. “I think we’re gonna be screaming quite a bit once I get to work. I think we’re all going to be delirious with joy,” exclaims the actress (watch our full interview above).

This is now Salonga’s third production of Old Friends, having previously appeared in the West End and Los Angeles engagements of the show. The Tony winner...

Tonys: ‘Old Friends’ would be the first Sondheim show nominated for Best Musical in 31 years
Image
In 1994, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Passion took home four Tony Awards, including the coveted prize for Best Musical. As it stands, that was the final work by Sondheim, the late legendary songwriter, to have even been nominated in that specific Tonys category. That could change this year with Old Friends.

In the years since Passion won, Sondheim has mainly been represented on Broadway through myriad remountings of his shows. Eighteen of them were up for Best Musical Revival:

Company and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 1996 Follies in 2001 Into the Woods (which won) in 2002 Gypsy in 2003 Assassins (which won) in 2004 Pacific Overtures in 2005 Sweeney Todd in 2006 Company (which won) in 2007 Gypsy and Sunday in the Park with George in 2008 West Side Story in 2009 A Little Night Music in 2010 Follies in 2012 Company (which won in 2022) Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd in 2023 Merrily We Roll Along...

The Resurrection Of The Christ finally has a production date
The Resurrection Of The Christ looks to finally start filming this summer, as Mel Gibson plots his Flight Risk follow-up.

It looks like being a special envoy to Hollywood has some perks after all. After being newly-minted as some sort of intermediary between Donald Trump and Tinseltown, it looks like Mel Gibson has finally got a shoot date locked for The Resurrection Of The Christ.

Given that the first film, 2004’s The Passion Of The Christ, is often touted as the most successful independent film of all time (having grossed over $600m at the box office alone), you’d have thought getting a sequel up and running would be a piece of cake. Not so, with The Resurrection Of The Christ suffering no shortage of false dawns over years.

Just last month we covered yet another story that claimed that The Resurrection Of The Christ was all ready to go,...

Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ is confirmed to be filming in Rome this summer
Image
It was just this past January that Lethal Weapon star and Braveheart director Mel Gibson was saying he hoped to start filming the sequel to his smash hit The Passion of the Christ sometime next year. In a surprising status update, it looks as if the new film, The Resurrection of the Christ, will actually start much sooner than previously thought. Deadline is reporting that the CEO of Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios, Manuela Cacciamani, has confirmed that Gibson’s biblical epic starts shooting at the lot this summer.

Cacciamani had revealed the bit of information in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. She let it slip that the film is due to start filming this August. Cacciamani stated, “I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and...

Who Plays Samantha 'Sinatra' Redmond On Hulu's Paradise?
Image
It's safe to say that, throughout Hulu's new original series "Paradise", a lot of stuff happens in the show's first season, which spans eight episodes and imagines a world where a private community lives in a Colorado bunker after an apocalyptic event. We spend the majority of our time with Brown's Secret Service agent Xavier Collins, who discovers that his boss, President Cal Bradford (James Marsden), has been murdered in the very first episode ... but Samantha Redmond, a woman who goes by the name "Sinatra" and runs the bunker largely because she's the richest person who lives there, is also a very important character.

Sinatra is played by Julianne Nicholson, a Hollywood veteran who's been appearing in projects since she got her start in ABC drama "Nothing Sacred" in a one-episode role in 1997. Since then, Nicholson has appeared in everything from "Ally McBeal" to "Masters of Sex" to...

Alicia Keys’ ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ faces a Sondheim steamroller in Grammys race for Best Musical Theater Album
Image
Going into this year’s Grammys, each of the six nominees for Best Musical Theater Album has its own distinct advantages, from involvement of previous nominees/winners to encouraging statistics. So let’s consider the possibilities.

The frontrunner to win based on the official Gold Derby odds is Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a jukebox musical mining the song catalog of Alicia Keys, who also wrote a few original tunes for the show. Jukebox musicals in general tend to be catnip for voters in this category as they contain material voters are familiar with. Previous champs include Jersey Boys, which used the songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; American Idiot, an adaptation of Green Day‘s eponymous 2004 concept album; Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which featured Carole King‘s song catalog; and Jagged Little Pill, an adaptation of Alanis Morissette‘s 1995 album.

Keys has plenty of bona fides.

Mel Gibson Says ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel Will Journey to Hell: “It’s an Acid Trip”
Image
Mel Gibson just gave a major update to his long-awaited sequel to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

Speaking on Joe Rogan’s podcast Thursday, the actor-director says he plans to begin filming the sequel in 2026. The title: The Resurrection of the Christ.

“I’m hoping [to start filming] next year sometime,” Gibson said. “There’s a lot required because [the script is] an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it. There’s some crazy stuff. In order to tell the story properly you have to start with the fall of the angels. You’re in another realm. You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol.”

Asked Rogan: “So you’re going to have Hell? You’re going to have Satan?”

Gibson nodded. “You got to have his origin. I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things about to depict that. I’ve been...

Mel Gibson says he is hoping to start shooting Passion of the Christ 2 next year
Image
Mel Gibson is back in the director’s chair for the upcoming Mark Wahlberg thriller Flight Risk. While it’s a different kind of film than the Mad Max star has helmed (his directing resume is dominated by historical epics), Gibson seems to be having a ball promoting the movie after a new featurette was released by Lionsgate. Additionally, he has recently showed up on the popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience. While on the show, he talks about a long-talked-about sequel to one of his biggest movies, The Passion of the Christ.

According to Deadline, Gibson says on the podcast that he is hoping to shoot the sequel, to be titled The Resurrection of the Christ, sometime next year. The Lethal Weapon star talked about the script he co-wrote with his brother and Braveheart scribe, Randall Wallace, that took seven years to write. He explained,

I’m hoping next year sometime.

LL Cool J and Eminem Team Up for First-Ever Collaboration “Murdergram Deux”: Stream
Image
LL Cool J and Eminem have officially shared their new song, “Murdergram Deux,” after it leaked earlier this year. Marking the first-ever collaboration between the hip-hop legends, it will appear on LL Cool J’s upcoming album, The Force.

Co-produced by Eminem and Q-Tip, the frantic beat for “Murdergram Deux” is a throwback to the mid-2000s, providing a backdrop for the rappers to go back and forth with a flurry of rapid-fire rhymes.

“Give blessings to my disciples, professional I’m a sniper,” LL raps on his second verse. “Like eight miles away, me and Marshall doing murders/ With dirty burners, break them down and melt them in the furnace.”

While closing out the track, Em name-checks “Crack a Bottle,” his 2009 hit with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. “Go ahead and crack a bottle, ’cause this is E and J/ Meaning me and James, got that avocado,” he spits. “We the sociopaths,...

Deadpool & Wolverine is the Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie in U.S. History
Image
Warning: This article includes spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Marvel Jesus has topped Cinematic Jesus at the North American box office. After pulling in $97 million in only its second weekend, Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine has now earned $395.6 million domestically and become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time in North America, passing the Biblical epic The Passion of the Christ. It's an impressive feat, particularly considering that Mel Gibson's film about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus has held the box office record for exactly 20 years.

Reynolds gave a completely expected comical reply when asked by Collider if he ever thought he would beat Jesus at the box office. He said:

"Wow, well thank you for putting us in a no-win cultural situation that will result in the end of our careers. Off to a great start, Frosty, love it. Isn't there a line in Deadpool 2 where I...

Why A Climactic Kiss Was Cut From Twisters
Image
One of the best aspects of "Twisters" is that the action-thriller movie is secretly a rom-com first and foremost. It's a story about a woman who moves back to her hometown, meets a charming guy, and after some negging and flirting, they connect on a real, electrifying level. Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler (Glen Powell) have amazing chemistry, and it's delightful watching them slowly fall in love. Also, there are some tornadoes or whatever.

The only problem with "Twisters" is the final scene, where Tyler chases Kate through the airport to catch her before her flight, getting himself a massive parking ticket in the process. It's a classic rom-com trope, something straight out of "Love Actually" or "She's Out of My League." But for some reason, they don't kiss. They look like they're about to kiss, but then they see a tornado's coming, so they spring into action. It's an...

Isekai & Boys Love Manga Trends Predicted to Continue for Next 5 Years
Image
The isekai and boys' love genres are currently dominating the modern-day manga and light novel markets, with hit franchises like Sasaki and Miyano, Overlord, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and KonoSuba: God's Blessings on this Wonderful World netting millions of devoted followers. According to Vinland Saga editor Akira Kanai, the popularity of these two trends is not likely to wane anytime soon.

In manga and anime, isekai is a term for any genre of fantasy that involves a down-on-his-luck character being reborn into a brand-new world with either a new body, new abilities or both. Boy's love, a genre aimed mainly at the female demographic, focuses on romantic relationships between beautiful young men. In a recent interview with Manga Passion, a German news site that focuses primarily on Japanese media, Kanai discusses how isekai and boys' love are likely to continue on as top-trending genres for the next few years.

Vinland Saga Editor Akira Kanai Rejects The Idea Of Western Political Correctness In Storytelling
Image
Akira Kanai, renowned manga editor known for his work on Vinland Saga, Ajin: Demi-Human, and Planetes, has taken a firm stance against letting political correctness influence his editorial decisions.

This was revealed during his interview with Manga Passion, where he was asked about his approach to ensuring the international success of manga.

“I don’t allow myself to be influenced by so-called political correctness abroad and design the works accordingly,” Kanai declared.

The editor-in-chief elaborated on his approach, stating that he adheres to various content codes related to violence, nudity, and religious depictions. However, these considerations are based on general content standards rather than specific international sensibilities.

According to him, interesting stories will “usually be understood, regardless of whether you come from Africa, Chile, or Greenland.”

Kanai asserted that the fundamental human experiences and emotions are universally relatable. And so, stopping a work just because it deals with a problem...

Exclusive: Passion Pictures has snapped up the development exec behind its buzzy Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story feature with a view to discovering the next generation of British female documentary directors.

Emily Jeal takes on the newly-created role of Head of Feature Documentaries. Her hire is partly intended to help free up time for CEO Nick Southgate, Managing Director David Moulton and Creative Director Hamish Fergusson to focus attention on limited and talent-led returnable TV series.

Jeal played a key role in developing Super/Man, the heartwrenching story about Reeves’ life-changing disability that attracted plenty attention at Sundance and was acquired by Warner, while she also worked across Passion’s Kim Kardashian-produced Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Moulton said Super/Man was never a “slam dunk project” but Jeal’s “creativity and tenacity” during a lengthy development period was crucial to getting funders on board.

Only a few films have managed to do what The Godfather did. The 1972 film by Francis Ford Coppola starring Al Pacino is one of the greatest and most influential films of all time and you cannot have a conversation about Hollywood’s best works without mentioning it. In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom, there is a select group of episodes that all fans agree rank among the best. These episodes include "Once More with Feeling," "Hush," "The Gift," "Becoming Parts 1 and 2," and "Passion." However, whether or not it's their favorite, there's one episode almost everyone will agree is superior to all others.

Image
Zack Snyder’s Snyderverse still has immaculate domination and an astonishing fanbase with leading heroes, including Superman star Henry Cavill and Batman actor Ben Affleck. Bessatsu Friend Magazine Editor Reveals Why Shojo Manga Gets Live-Action Over Anime Adaptation
Image
In a recent interview with Manga Passion, Mayu Nakamura, the manga editor of Shoujo Manga Magazine Bessatsu Friend, shed light on the preference of live-action adaptations over anime for shoujo manga.

Nakamura attributed this prominence of live-actions to business consideration within the industry, emphasizing that it’s a reflection of the demands of the domestic media market.

While acknowledging that shoujo manga could indeed be suitable for anime adaptation, Nakamura highlighted the significant demand for live-action series and movies within Japan, particularly targeting young women.

According to Nakamura, the Japanese film industry aims to produce a certain number of romance movies annually, often intended for viewing on dates. Shoujo manga, with their diverse romantic storylines, thus offer attractive source material for such productions. Furthermore, Nakamura noted the industry’s reliance on young male actors to portray leading roles in these romance movies, thereby enhancing their popularity.

Legendary Director Billy Wilder Asked Steven Spielberg To Let Him Direct Schindler's List
Image
World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.

For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...

After Taylor Swift, Who Else Could Rock the Box Office Without a Major Studio?
Image
Team Taylor Swift and AMC Theatres caught Hollywood by surprise when doing an end run around the major studios and hiring AMC Theatres to distribute a secret movie chronicling her blockbuster Eras Tour. The concert pic opened to an estimated $95 million to $97 million opening over the Oct. 13-15 weekend in North America, even without the marketing muscle of a traditional studio (it came in slightly behind an expected $100 million). In exchange, she’ll get to keep a bigger percentage of ticket sales. Beyoncé quickly followed suit and struck a deal with AMC to release her Renaissance Tour concert pic on Dec. 1. While these stars are global icons and able to secure favorable terms for box office receipts, there are a few others who might have the leverage to run the playbook — if they choose to. The official opening gross for Eras Tour will be released Monday morning. — Pamela McClintock

Passion Blu-ray Giveaway
Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams in Passion (2012)
The debut feature from Hamaguchi Ryûsuke, one of today’s preeminent auteurs, examines a series of intersecting love triangles as only he can, plunging headlong into the exposed-nerve confessions and unrequited attachments among a group of thirtysomethings. It begins when a couple, Kaho (Kawai Aoba) and Tomoya (Okamoto Ryuta), announce their engagement to their friends over dinner, where it’s also revealed the groom had an affair years earlier. While the two spend the evening apart, Tomoya follows his friends to the apartment of his former classmate (Urabe Fusako), with whom he’s in love, and are led into ever more vulnerable and shocking exchanges of emotional honesty. Though it was made as his student thesis project at Tokyo University of the Arts, Passion displays Hamaguchi’s rich and nuanced insight into modern relationships while establishing the thematic foundations for his later films.

Passion is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and...

2023 Broadway fall season preview of musicals includes revivals of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ and ‘Spamalot’
Image
Major film and TV productions are currently on hold due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the New York theater scene is still as active as ever. A new Broadway season is upon us, and there are five musicals set to open this fall. Will they contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below, we give you a preview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast and creative teams, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Merrily We Roll Along”

The first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical adaptation of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart‘s 1934 play spans three decades in the entertainment industry and charts the relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two friends — writer Mary and lyricist and playwright Charley. Evil Does Not Exist (2023)
Evil Does Not Exist Review: Hamaguchi Ryûsuke’s Abstract Parable of a Capitalist Invasion
Evil Does Not Exist (2023)
Hamaguchi Ryûsuke’s Evil Does Not Exist is a turn away from the empathy of the filmmaker’s earlier work and toward an aesthetic that’s jagged and chilly. Watching the film brings to mind the evolution of the career of Paul Thomas Anderson, who went from crafting messy humanist spectacles to austere, immaculate chamber pieces that appear to exist in perpetual anxiety over being digested on conventional emotional terms. Evil Does Not Exist suggests a similar turn for Hamaguchi, and though this film finds him more than capable of playing the role of cryptic genius auteur, one may wonder what is lost in the trade.

Evil Does Not Exist’s first images embody the tension of the title, which seems to promise assurance with the meter of a warning. Tracking shots move through a forest from the vantage point of the ground, as if someone is on their back...
