Godzilla x Kong: Supernova logo arrives alongside an ominous teaser announcing the film’s production start
Godzilla and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
More than a decade has passed since Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now on the way – and while we already knew two weeks ago that production had started on the film, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have officially announced that filming is underway today, unveiling an ominous teaser, revealing that the film is aiming for a March 26, 2027 theatrical release,...

15 Hollywood Actors Who Found Great Success as Directors
Image
Actors turning into directors is nothing new in Hollywood, but what’s wild is how many of them are crushing it. We’re not just talking about the usual suspects like Clint Eastwood or Ron Howard, who basically have Oscars for breakfast. Nope.

These days, more and more actors are hopping behind the camera and serving up some seriously impressive stuff. Whether it’s because they’re tired of the same old roles or they’ve caught the directing bug after spending years on set, the results have been anything but boring.

Some of these folks have directed films that blew up the box office. Others have gone the indie route and ended up with festival awards and critical love. And the best part? A lot of them weren’t even on anyone’s radar as directors until, boom, they dropped a movie that made everyone stop and say, “Wait,...

Pope Francis The Film Buff: Pontiff Cited Federico Fellini’s ‘La Strada’ As Favorite Movie
Image
Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, had a special relationship with cinema going back to his childhood in Buenos Aires.

“I owe my cinema culture above all to my parents who took us to the cinema a lot,” the pontiff said in a 2013 interview, a few months after his election as head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in the Argentinian capital in 1936 to parents with roots in northern Italy, Italian cinema figured highly in his early cinema-going.

In the same 2013 interview, Pope Francis named Federico Fellini’s 1954 Oscar-winning work La Strada, starring Giulietta Masina as fragile protagonist Gelsomina who is abused by brutish circus strongman Zampanò, played by Anthony Quinn, as the film he loved the most.

“I identify with that film, in which there is an implicit reference to Saint Francis,” said the pontiff referring to its themes of love...

Netflix is adding 12 movies and series this week
Image
Netflix adds mayhem and mirth this week, with a sprinkling of sports and sentiment for good measure. As usual, there's something for everyone this week in the debuting titles on your favorite streaming service.

For those of you that observe Easter, I hope you have a wonderful day. Just be sure to find every last one of those Easter eggs you hid under the couch. For those that don't celebrate, you have all those half-price chocolate bunnies, Cadbury creme eggs, and assorted candies to fill your larder until next year.

And as my daughter wisely pointed out years ago, the Reese's peanut butter eggs have the highest ratio of peanut butter filling to chocolate of all varieties. Do not waste this opportunity!

In the meantime, we have a dozen actual movies and shows coming to us this week. Good thing, too, as we're losing some great shows this week. No Hard Feelings,...

Jack O’Connell Discusses His ’28 Years Later’ Character: “He’s a gas cunt”
Image
Jack O’Connell is back, and this time, he’s heading into the apocalypse. Best known for playing bad boys and rebels, the British actor is taking on a totally new kind of role in 28 Years Later, the next chapter in the iconic zombie horror series.

You might remember O’Connell from his early days on Skins, or from films like Unbroken and ’71. Now 34, the BAFTA winner is stepping into darker territory. In 28 Years Later, he plays a strange and powerful man known as Sir Jimmy Crystal, or, as he joked, “Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal” — a character he calls a “gas cunt” with a laugh.

We don’t know much about Sir Jimmy yet, but from O’Connell’s hints, he sounds like a creepy, possibly dangerous figure. Rumors suggest he’s a cult leader, someone who might twist hope into something terrifying in a world full of the infected. O...

Who Plays Sinners' Main Villain Remmick?
Image
The creatures of the night, what music they make -- especially in Ryan Coogler's haunting but hugely entertaining new vampire horror film, "Sinners." The latest from the "Black Panther" director has Michael B. Jordan pulling double-duty as Smoke and Stack, twin brothers returning home to 1930s Mississippi to set up their own club, only to find some nightmarish outsiders trying to get on the guest list. The claret-covered terror leading this choir of monsters, Remmick, is played by Jack O'Connell, a British talent whose name is undoubtedly bigger on one side of the pond than the other ... though that could -- and should -- be changing in the very near future.

At 34, O'Connell has already collaborated with some impressively big names, including George Clooney, Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, and Ben Mendelsohn. He wouldn't have gotten anywhere, however, without springing to stardom at a young age and delivering some career-defining...

Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Joins MonsterVerse; Set To Star In Godzilla x Kong 3
Image
Multiple sources are reporting that Sam Neill (Jurassic Park; Thor: Ragnarok; Peaky Blinders) has joined the cast of Legendary's next MonsterVerse installment, the tentatively titled Godzilla x Kong 3.

Plot details are being kept strictly under wraps for now, but the studio has teased that the new film, which is being helmed by Grant Sputore, will follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

It's up for debate what that cataclysmic world-ending threat could be, but the previous film's director Adam Wingard teased last year that, if he were to direct the next film, Destoroyah might be in the cards. Speaking with Discussing Film, he said,

"I’ll say this, one of my top Godzilla movies is Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The reason it’s one of my favorite films is I don’t think any other Godzilla movie,...

Sinners: Michael B. Jordan & Hailee Steinfeld Dance With The Devil In Red Hot New Character Posters
Image
Warner Bros. has shared thirteen new character posters from Ryan Coogler's Sinners, offering a fresh new look at the devlish heroes and villains set to feature in the upcoming horror thriller.

While not much is yet known about the plot, save for the fact that Michael B. Jordan will be forced to square off with vampires, including his recently turned twin brother, which should only up the ante as he and a small group of survivors attempt to make it to daybreak.

When asked about his latest film, Coogler teased, “Sinners is a unique one. It’s genre fluid. There are vampires in the film, but it’s really about a lot more than just that. It’s one of many elements, I’ll say. I think we’re going to surprise people with it.”

The new Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler collaboration, Sinners, has been building hype since it was secretively being shopped around to the big studios last year. ‘UnBroken,’ Now In Theaters, Tells Incredible Holocaust Survival Story Of The 7 Weber Siblings
Image
The Nazi death machine came for the Weber children: Alfons, Senta, Ruth, Gertrude, Renee, Judith, and little Bela, the youngest. But somehow, against all odds, they survived – despite spending part of World War II in Berlin, the steel teeth of the Third Reich.

The incredible story of the Weber siblings – how they escaped death at every turn and later immigrated to the United States together in 1946 – is told in the documentary UnBroken. The film, released by Greenwich Entertainment, is directed by Beth Lane, Bela’s daughter.

“If I’ve learned anything from my ancestors, from my mom and her sisters and my uncle,” Lane said at a Q&a this weekend in Los Angeles, one of the locations where UnBroken is playing theatrically, “is that they never gave up hope.”

Yet there was every reason to despair of surviving the Nazi regime. The children were born to Alexander and Lina Weber – she a Jewish woman,...

Image
Jack O’Connell, currently vamping it up in the trailer for Ryan Coogler’s upcoming Sinners, has joined the cast of the Legendary’s latest installment of its Godzilla-King Kong creature feature franchise.

Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is directing the project, which is part of the company’s Monsterverse. Dave Callaham wrote the script.

Plot details are being kept under the Earth’s crust, but Legendary has said the story will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

Kaitlyn Dever is headlining the human cast, which also sees the return of Dan Stevens, who played laid-back monster veterinarian and dentist Trapper in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

O’Connell is playing Dever’s brother.

Jack O’Connell Joins Legendary’s Next Monsterverse Movie
Image
BAFTA winner Jack O’Connell (Sinners) has closed a deal to join the next theatrical feature in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, Deadline can reveal.

Character details are being kept under wraps. O’Connell joins a cast that includes Kaitlyn Dever, as well as Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the franchise’s highest-grossing installment to date.

Grant Sputore is set to direct from a script by Dave Callaham. Plot details have been kept vague so far, though we’re told the next entry will feature several new human characters alongside Titans Godzilla and Kong, as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat. Sputore took over the directorial reins from Adam Wingard following the latter’s work on The New Empire and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

15 Amazing War Films Inspired by Real People
Image
War films are quite a niche subject, but many movie buffs would agree that they are also an important source of education. While audiences do not wish to travel back to these times, they enjoy learning about these conflicts through a rich cinematic lens. Plus, these films often tell stories outside the main conflict, enriching fans' knowledge of military impact and strategy.

However, some films prefer to use a much narrower scope and tend to focus on one individual. This could be a decorated veteran or an outsider who helped increase the war effort. Regardless of the muse, war films that focus on real people allow viewers to learn about the unsung heroes of military history.

A US Olympian Defies the Odds in WWII Unbroken

Written by the Coen brothers and directed by Angelina Jolie, Unbroken tells the riveting story of Louis Zamperini. At the start of the film, Zamperini...

Michael B. Jordan in Sinners (2025)
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan break down the Sinners trailer in 5 minute video
Michael B. Jordan in Sinners (2025)
Yesterday, a full trailer was released for Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct. Once the trailer had been unveiled, Entertainment Weekly released a video in which Coogler and Jordan break it down, and now you can watch that video in the embed above. Coogler and Jordan try to avoid spoilers in this video, but they do talk about the film’s setting (it takes place over one day in 1932) and the characters, particularly the twin brothers played Jordan.

Sinners is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date...

Sinners gets a new poster prior to the trailer drop later today
Image
Last year, a secret genre project was in development from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. The project had the studios in Hollywood excited to bid against each other and Warner Bros. would come out on top. The second trailer is due to hit later today. But before then, Warner Bros. has released a new poster of the film featuring Michael B. Jordan with some ominous-looking figures.

Coogler has written the script for this project, which has been described as both a genre picture and a period piece. The project is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date). The Pow Film That Inspired ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ Took a Different, Thrilling Direction From War Movies
Image
Prisoner-of-war films have been some of Hollywood's most enduring pictures. Steve McQueen daringly screaming over fences on his motorbike in The Great Escape, Alec Guinness collapsing on the detonator in The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Jack O'Connell delivering a message home in Unbroken to say that he is still alive are some of the most powerful and jaw-dropping moments in war pictures, let alone cinema itself. In 1953, however, the famed writer-director Billy Wilder went in a slightly different direction with his unique Pow film.

Zendaya Shares How Angelina Jolie Helped Her Overcome One of Her Fears Around Directing: ‘I Would Love to Direct One Day’
Image
One of the great benefits of being part of awards conversation is getting to share space with other talented individuals, not only to revel in shared experiences, but to offer advice to one another as they all traverse the tricky landscape of being a working artist. With Zendaya being celebrated for her work in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Angelina Jolie returning to form with her wholly-committed performance as opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” both have gotten to revel in the joys of the awards race, including getting to meet and talk to one another.

With both taking part in this year’s THR’s Actress Roundtable, the two were able to get some private moments to discuss stepping behind the camera. Jolie has done so many times, having directed “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” “Unbroken,” “Without Blood,...

The Best Angelina Jolie Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Angelina Jolie is one of the most celebrated actors of her generation, and one of Hollywood's most notable humanitarians. She's done vitally important work on behalf of refugees for the United Nations, and has also taken up for women's rights in the third world. She's an extraordinary person, but it all started with acting -- and overcoming the potential stigma of being what the kids nowadays call a "nepo-baby."

Yes, Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Her father was a pivotal actor in the New Hollywood movement of the 1960s and '70s, starring in such trailblazing films as "Midnight Cowboy," "Deliverance," and "Coming Home" (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor). Jolie got her first film role alongside her father in Hal Ashby's ill-fated comedy "Lookin' to Get Out" in 1982, but didn't return to movies until 1993 as the lead...

Angelina Jolie’s Greatest Performances, from ‘Girl, Interrupted’ to ‘Maria’
Image
Few actors are so undeniably made to be stars as Angelina Jolie. A legendary beauty whose public image has shifted from wild child nepotism baby drinking vials of blood to glamorous bombshell to a mother figure and human rights activist, Jolie has a flinty, specific presence that’s outsized and larger-than-life, one that feels impossible to be contained on anything larger than the silver screen. She can be a titanic melodrama performer, or a badass action star, but one thing is clear: when Jolie is in a film, it becomes her movie.

Which has made it all the more depressing how scarce the star has made herself over the past decade. While she never officially retired, Jolie spent about as much time voicing a cartoon tiger in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise as she has had making actual live-action films. A variety of factors contributed to this: her dedication to raising her six children,...

Did Angelina Jolie Make $33M For Maleficent & Insisted On Staying True To The Iconic Villain?
Image
Did Angelina Jolie earn handsomely for Maleficent? (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Yes, Angeline Jolie ended up becoming the only woman on the 2013 list of top-paid actors alongside Denzel Washington because of Maleficent. Producer Joe Roth put it best: “There was no point in making the movie if it wasn’t her.” And really, who else could bring Maleficent to life with such formidable elegance and menace?

This wasn’t just about playing some Disney villain but defining Jolie as a legitimate box-office powerhouse. Maleficent opened to a massive $70M in North America and pulled in another $100M abroad—not bad for a troubled production. Jolie made a movie about evil enchantment, a global phenomenon, proving she could drive audiences worldwide—men, women, kids—you name it.

She’s been doing this since Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, way back in 2001, when she raked in $275 million globally. While other stars fade after a few misses,...

The 5 Worst Episodes Of Game Of Thrones, Ranked
Image
Let's be honest: not every "Game of Thrones" episode is a winner. Sure, the show's first four seasons are basically unimpeachable — and I think a strong argument can be made that, in the aftermath of a particularly bleak fifth entry, season 6 is actually really good — but the drop-off in quality when you get into the show's (frequently derided) later seasons is quite apparent, resulting in some really rough episodes. So, which ones are the absolute worst of the worst?

Because I can't nominate "all of season 7 and 8" for this dubious honor, I made some tough decisions and chose the five absolute crappiest "Game of Thrones" episodes, though there were some contenders I couldn't include here. Basically anything involving the Dorne plotline could have qualified, or anything involving the faceless assassin school in Braavos that beats the spirit out of Maisie Williams' Arya Stark. But installments like "No One" or "Mother's...

28 Years Later's Premise Reveals A Crucial Detail About What Happened After The Last Movie
Image
The plot synopsis of 28 Years Later reveals a major detail about how the world has changed since the previous installment. 2002's 28 Days Later introduced the rage virus, a virulent disease that transforms its hosts into the ravenous, fast-moving, zombie-like Infected. While the outbreak in the movie was limited to the island of Great Britain, the finale of the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later featured it spreading to continental Europe by showcasing a group of Infected running through Paris after surviving characters Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) crash-landed there.

The upcoming 28 Years Later, which is set to premiere in theaters on June 20, 2025, is intended to be the first installment of a new trilogy of movies continuing the franchise after more than a decade. The first of the trilogy reteams original director Danny Boyle with original writer Alex Garland and original star Cillian Murphy as Jim. The ensemble...

Rumor: Mahershala Ali Continues Collaborations with Marvel Despite ‘Blade’ Delays
Image
How many times have we written about Mahershala Ali’s upcoming Blade movie? Who knows! In our previous reports, we highlighted the film’s uncertain development and warned that it might end up in developmental hell, despite reassurances from those involved.

Then, it happened. Marvel officially removed Blade from its release schedule, which was originally set for November 2025, and no new release date was given. This means the movie is officially in developmental hell. Fans were hit hard by this news, as it was their biggest fear.

However, not everything is as bleak as it seems. A new rumor suggests that Mahershala Ali recently met with Marvel about the movie. He reportedly agreed with the delay and is still satisfied with how the project is progressing, even if it feels like it’s not moving forward at all.

The rumor was shared on social media, with critic and podcast host...

Regional Film Festivals Impact the Oscars, Too
Image
This time of year, major fall festivals give way to regional fests around the country, which program a mix of Oscar contenders and international Oscar submissions. The better-resourced festivals bring in talent to regale the Academy members on hand, from the Hamptons and Woodstock to Savannah. Audience award winners gain momentum, such as “Conclave” (Focus Features), which won at both Middleburg and Mill Valley. And at this year’s BendFilm Festival in Oregon, ex-Sundance festival director John Cooper launched the inaugural BendFilm: Basecamp.

Filmmakers and their casts did not make the trek to the Orcas Island Film Festival (October 16-20), which has built up a passionate following over 10 years. Coaxing distributors to send them DCPs is Carl Spence, veteran of the Seattle, Palm Springs, Miami, and Sonoma fests, who runs Orcas Island with local culture impresario Donna Laslo. It was fun taking the puddle jumper from Seattle to Orcas Island...

Jennifer Aniston Wasn’t the Only One ‘Betrayed’ by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith: ‘A total level of ignorance is evident’
Image
In the early 2000s, Jennifer Aniston might have had her heart crushed by the budding romance between her now ex-husband Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie. However, the Friends star was not the only one who felt betrayed when they teamed up for their first-ever project together, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In fact, while the 55-year-old might have been hit hardest by it, the film managed to ruffle a few more feathers.

After all, the film had everyone glued to their screens but did not portray one major part of it correctly. In fact, with Jolie and Pitt’s characters meeting for the very first time in Bogotá, Columbia, there seemed to be a few things that were missing.

Apart from Jennifer Aniston, Mr. and Mrs. Smith irked an entire city
