There’s a new biography in the market about The Sopranos lead star James Gandolfini, and it brings up some of his old stories from his film and TV sets. In Jason Bailey’s Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend, the author mentioned Gandolfini’s old scuffle with Denzel Washington on the set of their 1995 movie, Crimson Tide.
The biography shared a report from that time, which suggested that the Enough Said actor got aggressive with Washington during one scene. However, the two actors quickly became friends on the set after that incident.
The film was a submarine action thriller directed by Tony Scott, focusing on the clash between a commanding officer and his new executive officer. The roles were played by Gene Hackman and Washington. Gandolfini played Supply Officer Lt. Bobby Dougherty in the film.
What went down between The Sopranos actor James Gandolfini and Denzel Washington on the film set?...

Former “Days of our Lives” actor Mark Valley is starring in the new film from director Luca Elmi called “Hostage,” which wrapped principal photography this week in Kentucky, Deadline reported.
Written by Drew Ingram and produced by his Stagmoor Studios, the film also stars William Moseley (“The Chronicles of Narnia” franchise) and follows a charismatic politician’s road to the governor’s office as it takes an unexpected twist when he becomes embroiled in a high-stakes hostage situation that forces him to confront his past and threatens to derail his path to power.
Valley will play Jon Lewis, the ruthless campaign manager working for Logan Marshall (Moseley), who is described as a rising political star and the Independent candidate in the upcoming Kentucky gubernatorial election. The kind of politician every voter wants to believe in, a proud Kentuckian, handsome, young, charismatic, and commanding, with a supportive wife and daughter by his side.

Apple TV+ has ordered a new drama series, and you won't believe who is set to star in it. It's titled The Dealer, and we shared everything there is to know about this upcoming show right below.
Let's be honest. Apple TV+ has some pretty solid shows, but the streaming service does a bad job at promoting its content. However, we've seen some shows like Ted Lasso and Severance break through the clutter and capture widespread attention. We're hoping this new Apple TV+ series gets the same kind of buzz. With two well-known, award-winning actors leading the show, it has all the potential to draw in a wide audience and become the next breakout hit.

In 2011, it might have seemed like Jessica Chastain emerged out of nowhere as a formidable actress, when she appeared in no less than five movies -- including Best Picture nominees “The Help” and “The Tree of Life” -- and scored her first-ever Oscar nomination. But Chastain worked for years to get to that point, acting in plays from a young age and attending the prestigious Juilliard School. “I struggled for so long to try to create a career,” she told the New York Times in 2017.
In the decade since her breakout year, Chastain has received acclaim for a variety of different roles -- from her Oscar-nominated lead part in “Zero Dark Thirty” to her lauded supporting work in “A Most Violent Year” to even a superhero franchise with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She’s worked alongside top filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Aaron Sorkin, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott.

You know when you’re eagerly waiting for something to hit the mark and it almost does, but then it just… doesn’t? That’s how many felt watching Marc Forster’s All I See Is You. It’s like biting into a sandwich with all the right ingredients but somehow still ending up with a bland bite.
The film, starring Blake Lively and Jason Clarke, seemed like it had all the ingredients for success. A compelling story about a woman’s journey through her evolving independence after regaining her sight, with an award-winning actor by her side? It should’ve been an emotional ride. But instead, it ended up being a bit of a snooze fest.

Despite its intriguing premise, All I See Is You earned a meager $678K at the box office against a $30 million production budget.

The directors that popular culture considers to be the greatest of all time — Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, for example — are almost always men. While female directors have spearheaded successful films across genres like superhero, action, and horror, it is men who typically receive the funding, global attention, and prestige projects that cement their legacy in film history.
There have only been 10 women nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and it wasn't until 2021 that more than one woman was nominated in the category: Chloé Zhao for "Nomadland" and Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman." In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won the Best Director prize: Chloé Zhao, Jane Campion, and Kathryn Bigelow.

It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

With box office receipts tallying over $13 billion worldwide, the always entertaining Chris Pratt is undeniably one of the silver screen's most influential and highest-grossing actors of all time, with the charismatic star having dominated Hollywood in hits like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World trilogies, Onward, The Super Mario Bros. Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

No woman has even won an Oscar for best cinematography, and that’s not likely to change in 2025. Why? Because no women made the final five. But this year, the American Society of Cinematographers could be righting Oscar’s wrong.
ASC has only handed out the top prize once to a woman — Mandy Walker, who won in the feature competition in 2023 for “Elvis.” Now, for the first time since 2014, the feature competition field has expanded its nominees to seven, with Alice Brooks landing a nomination for her work on “Wicked.”
Brooks had one goal for the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, that “it would be the most beautiful love story between these two women,” she says, referring to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who star as the famous witches of Oz.
Brooks is Jon M. Chu’s go-to Dp since their filmmaking days at the University of Southern California.

Cinema, being as powerful an art form as it is, is no stranger when it comes to taking on controversial or taboo topics. American History X took on neo-Nazism and white supremacy in the U.S., Zero Dark Thirty covered practices of torture used by the C.I.A. in the hunt for Bin Laden, and Trainspotting was a heartbreaking but fun exploration of crippling drug addiction. But few films have taken on what is arguably the most controversial subject of all: Adolf Hitler. The Nazis themselves have featured in plenty of the great war and action films, from Raiders of the Lost Arkto Saving Private Ryan.

Jeremy Strong is set to lead a series adaptation of the Ira Levin novel “The Boys From Brazil” at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The project hails from Peter Morgan, the creator of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “The Crown.” Morgan is writing the adaptation and will executive produce along with Suzanne Mackie of Orchid Pictures.
Reps for Netflix declined to comment.
Morgan revealed he was working on a series take on “The Boys From Brazil” in an interview with Variety in 2024. The novel was originally published in 1976 and was subsequently turned into a film starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier in 1978.
In the novel, Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann receives a tip that the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele is alive and living under an assumed name in Brazil. Liebermann travels to the South American country to track down the so called “Angel of Death,” only to discover a sinister conspiracy at work.

The gold-plated meltdown that has followed the revelation of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past anti-Muslim and racist tweets — with anti-George Floyd and pro-Hitler sentiments thrown in — has now required numerous apologies/explanations from the Best Actress Oscar nominee. Gascón’s previous online remarks have seriously cratered the odds for her and her film, which is nominated for 13 Oscars. The journalist and podcaster who uncovered Gascón’s troubling social media posts insists it was good old-fashioned reporting and she was not a “studio plant” fueling a smear campaign underwritten by a rival nominee.
In any case Gascón’s self-inflicted mess is the latest example of an internet-powered scandal that has threatened to derail an Oscar campaign. Here’s a look at the four most notable examples this century and how they played out.

If you're a fan of the macabre, then Stephen King movies are probably right up your alley. However, this time we won't provide news about his scary films. In fact, there's nothing quite scary about Stand by Me, except that it offers a surprisingly honest look at childhood and the good and bad things that come with it. For fans of this departure from King's usual hokum, then you have to hurry and see Stand by Me before it leaves Netflix on February 1.
The coming-of-age movie will depart the catalog and will disappear for a while from the streaming-verse. Note that other titles leaving the streamer on February 1 include Snowpiercer, Zero Dark Thirty and 2021's Dune. If you haven't heard about the 1986 movie, just know that it's worth paying for a Netflix subscription even if prices are ridiculously high. Yes, it is that good.

From Vittorio di Sica’s “Bicycle Thieves” to the films of the Safdies and Sean Baker, using non-professional actors has long been a tool filmmakers have employed to add a note of authenticity to their work. And yet, with “East of Wall,” writer/director Kate Beecroft elevates this concept to greater heights, crafting a feature docu-fiction debut that is cinematically and narratively rich, but also takes care to reflect the deeper reality at the heart of its story.

William Goldenberg has been working as an editor for over 30 years, during which time he has collaborated with A-list directors like Michael Mann, Kathryn Bigelow, and Ben Affleck, whose “Argo” won the Oscar for best editing. Yet when the time came to direct his first feature, the inspirational sports drama “Unstoppable,” there was still one thing made Goldenberg apprehensive: working with actors.
“That was the thing I was most nervous about,” Goldenberg told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “Luckily for me, I got my first choice for everybody, and they’re all spectacularly good actors, so it’s not like I’m taking a first-time actor and trying to mold the performance. It was about making sure we’re all making the same film, that we all have the same goals and are trying to interpret the scenes in the same way.”

Contains brief discussion of murder, sexual assault, and racial violence.
The 1995 James Cameron-written cyberpunk thriller Strange Days proved to be a box office flop in its time and has failed to gain a cult following even now—in fact, barely anyone remembers this great 1990s action movie in spite of its big names. However, with its thematic relevance to present-day events, Strange Days deserves another look from modern audiences. Starring Ralph Fiennes as black market virtual reality (VR) dealer Lenny Nero, the film explores the societal impact of technological advances and mass violence.
Many great sci-fi movies got the future wrong, but oddly enough, Strange Days managed to predict quite a few things about the turn of the century as well as the American zeitgeist 30 years later. Civil unrest, police brutality, political corruption, and societal desensitization to mass violence are just a few themes from Strange Days, and while...

In 2010, writer and director Kathryn Bigelow made history when she became the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director thanks to her powerful war film The Hurt Locker, which also won Best Picture. Her follow-up would be another centered during a war. Zero Dark Thirty, starring the likes of Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, and James Gandolfini was based on the true story of the CIA's search for Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader behind the 9/11 attacks. However, during the writing process, the theme of the film changed from being one about America's failures, to patriotic heroism, as bin Laden was found and killed by a group of Navy SEALs. That meant there'd be a great third act, but it also brought Bigelow a lot of controversy.

Jessica Chastain has tackled some tough roles, but this one was totally next level. Imagine filming in an actual prison in Jordan, dealing with the heat, the chaos, and a script so intense it messes with your head. That’s the kind of madness she dove into for what became the hardest movie of her career.
