Jessica Chastain is set to star in a new horror film directed by Rob Savage and based on Incidents Around the House, a novel by Josh Malerman. The project is being developed by Universal Pictures with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, in association with Spin a Black Yarn.

Nathan Elston, known for his work on Succession, is writing the screenplay. Plot details have not been released, but the source material centers on a young girl who perceives a supernatural presence in her home, which she names “Other Mommy.” The story unfolds within a family dynamic shaped by fear and uncertainty.

James Wan is producing the film through Atomic Monster, alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Macdara Kelleher, Rob Savage, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis. Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.

Chastain’s past work in horror includes Mama, directed by Andy Muschietti, and It: Chapter Two, where she reunited with the director.

The project has been given a straight-to-series order in a competitive situation. It is described as “a biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, played by Driver.”

Lucas Hnath is the writer behind the series and serves as executive producer. Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.

The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.

No woman has even won an Oscar for best cinematography, and that’s not likely to change in 2025. Why? Because no women made the final five. But this year, the American Society of Cinematographers could be righting Oscar’s wrong.

ASC has only handed out the top prize once to a woman — Mandy Walker, who won in the feature competition in 2023 for “Elvis.” Now, for the first time since 2014, the feature competition field has expanded its nominees to seven, with Alice Brooks landing a nomination for her work on “Wicked.”

Brooks had one goal for the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, that “it would be the most beautiful love story between these two women,” she says, referring to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who star as the famous witches of Oz.

Brooks is Jon M. Chu’s go-to Dp since their filmmaking days at the University of Southern California.

Cinema, being as powerful an art form as it is, is no stranger when it comes to taking on controversial or taboo topics. American History X took on neo-Nazism and white supremacy in the U.S., Zero Dark Thirty covered practices of torture used by the C.I.A. in the hunt for Bin Laden, and Trainspotting was a heartbreaking but fun exploration of crippling drug addiction. But few films have taken on what is arguably the most controversial subject of all: Adolf Hitler. The Nazis themselves have featured in plenty of the great war and action films, from Raiders of the Lost Arkto Saving Private Ryan.

Jeremy Strong is set to lead a series adaptation of the Ira Levin novel “The Boys From Brazil” at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

The project hails from Peter Morgan, the creator of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “The Crown.” Morgan is writing the adaptation and will executive produce along with Suzanne Mackie of Orchid Pictures.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

Morgan revealed he was working on a series take on “The Boys From Brazil” in an interview with Variety in 2024. The novel was originally published in 1976 and was subsequently turned into a film starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier in 1978.

In the novel, Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann receives a tip that the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele is alive and living under an assumed name in Brazil. Liebermann travels to the South American country to track down the so called “Angel of Death,” only to discover a sinister conspiracy at work.

The gold-plated meltdown that has followed the revelation of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past anti-Muslim and racist tweets — with anti-George Floyd and pro-Hitler sentiments thrown in — has now required numerous apologies/explanations from the Best Actress Oscar nominee. Gascón’s previous online remarks have seriously cratered the odds for her and her film, which is nominated for 13 Oscars. The journalist and podcaster who uncovered Gascón’s troubling social media posts insists it was good old-fashioned reporting and she was not a “studio plant” fueling a smear campaign underwritten by a rival nominee.

Mark Strong is set as a series regular opposite leads Callum Turner and Briana Middleton in Neuromancer, Apple TV+’s 10-episode drama series based on the award-winning novel of the same name by William Gibson.

Created for television by Graham Roland and Jd Dillard, Neuromancer follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly (Middleton), a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

Strong will play Armitage, Case and Molly’s mysterious employer. In addition to Turner and Middleton, he joins previously cast Joseph Lee who plays Hideo, a professional bodyguard.

A co-production between Skydance Television, Anonymous Content and Apple Studios, Neuromancer is also produced by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment. Roland will serve as showrunner and Dillard is set to direct the pilot episode.

If you're a fan of the macabre, then Stephen King movies are probably right up your alley. However, this time we won't provide news about his scary films. Kathryn Bigelow will always be known for her work directing Zero Dark Thirty, the 2012 political thriller starring Chris Pratt and Jessica Chastain, and now her next project just got a thrilling new update. After reports of casting had been dropping like a breadcrumb trailer throughout 2024, Netflix has officially announced Bigelow's next movie will be released later this year in the Fall. The film still does not have an official title and plot details are being kept under wraps, but the script comes from Noah Oppenheim, and it will feature a star-studded ensemble led by Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, with Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Jonah Hauer-King, Moses Ingram, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke filling out the rest of the cast. Bigelow will also produce alongside Oppenheim and Greg Shapiro.

In 2010, writer and director Kathryn Bigelow made history when she became the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director thanks to her powerful war film The Hurt Locker, which also won Best Picture. Her follow-up would be another centered during a war.
