After streaming platforms became as popular as they are now, it became clear that the age of the standard cable network TV format was over. Shows have become much shorter as the wait between seasons has become much longer, regardless of genre or ratings.
With the recent WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes that took place in the summer of 2023, the production schedule for any studio has become a mess. Now, however, it's rewarding to see the shows we love overcoming any difficulties the circumstances created and getting back on track.

Netflix finally unveiled an official teaser for the second season of The Sandman yesterday, and it featured a first glimpse of Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, and Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.
Though we did get to see Delirium's face, her full visage was somewhat obscured, and this new behind-the-scenes photo gives us a better look at the Hanna star in-costume as the youngers of The Endless.
In Neil Gaiman's comics, Delirium is the current manifestation of the being that started out as Delight. The character is a little... mixed up, but is loyal to her family and proves to be an invaluable ally to Dream during the events of "Brief Lives."
Check out the photo below along with yesterday's teaser.

The Prodigal is finally set to return.
Throughout the first season of The Sandman, viewers met not only Dream a.k.a. Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), but also his siblings, known as the Endless. The mopey Dream gets a pick-me-up from his cheery sister Death (Kirby), while dealing with the machinations of the duplicitous twins Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston).
But readers of the cult comic book series by Neil Gaiman know that the Netflix adaptation left other members of the Endless off screen. But according to a casting announcement, the rest of the family will be dropping by for season two.
Esmé Creed-Miles of the Amazon Prime Video series Hanna will play the playful younger sister Delirium, while Adrian Lester, currently seen in the Disney+ show Renegade Nell, will don the cloak and chains of the mysterious Destiny.

The Endless have assembled!
Netflix has shared a brief teaser for the second season of The Sandman, reintroducing the members of The Endless we met during season 1, Dream, Death, Desire and Despair, while providing our first glimpse of Morpheus' remaining siblings, Destiny, Delirium, and "The Prodigal."
Esmé Creed-Miles will play the youngest of the Endless, Delirium, while Adrian Lester will take on the role of the all-seeing Destiny, and Barry Sloane will play The Prodigal.
Anyone who has read Neil Gaiman's comic series will know who this really is, and while it wouldn't seem like much of a spoiler to reveal the name, it's clearly something the show is choosing to keep under wraps for the time being.

After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and was released into the world as a Netflix series in August of 2022. (Read our review Here.) Season 2 of the show went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. Thankfully, The Sandman season 2 was able to resume production as soon as those strikes came to an end – and today, a press release reveals that the cast of the new batch of episodes includes Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna) as Delirium, Adrian Lester (Hustle) as Destiny, and Barry Sloane (Pleasureland) as The Prodigal. Their characters can be seen in this promo clip:

Sandra Oh's character in Grey's Anatomy, heart surgeon Cristina Yang, has a difficult personality and the ability to accept the blows of fate with dignity: she experienced the death of her father, a runaway bridegroom, unsuccessful pregnancies, and a plane crash.

The Sandman graphic novel is, without exaggeration, Neil Gaiman's magnum opus, his most ambitious and complex work. It has won the love of many fans, spawned numerous spin-offs, won several awards, and gone through more than one reprint.
The idea of adapting The Sandman, initially as a feature film, appeared in the late 1990s, but due to creative differences the project got stuck in production hell. It was only in 2019 that a deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. was announced, which led to the long-awaited adaptation – already in the form of a series.
The Sandman, released in 2022, was a definite success – it received 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and unconditional love from fans of the comic as well as viewers unfamiliar with the original source.

On April 25, a new series was released that all fans of Neil Gaiman's work have been waiting for an incredibly long time. After all, this is not just a live-action adaptation of one of the famous American author's works, but a story that takes place in the same universe as The Sandman! We are, of course, talking about Dead Boy Detectives, a young adult comedy-drama that skillfully combines elements of occult detective and supernatural horror.
The new series has pleasantly impressed critics and audiences alike, with an astounding 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But despite fan love, rave reviews, and the top spot on Netflix's regional charts, Dead Boy Detectives doesn't seem to be getting the ratings it deserves. Unfortunately, all of this puts the show at risk of cancellation.

The limited series, which reached 2.6 million views in its debut weekend — impressive, given the show’s minimal marketing push — rose to 13.3 million views in its second week on the chart, then shot up by another 65%, landing at 22 million views for the April 22-28 viewing window.
That made it the most-watched Netflix title of the week, followed by “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” which was the top movie with 18.8 million views. “Anyone but You” was the No. 2 movie of the week with 10.6 million views in its first six days of availability, following a successful run at the box office earlier this year.

For us The Sandman fans who yearned for a second season of Neil Gaiman's most enigmatic TV project, Dead Boy Detectives was a life-saver. The new Netflix show that follows the adventures of two ghosts who prefer solving supernatural mysteries to enjoying their afterlife is a fantastic addition to the already rich universe of The Sandman.
The spinoff somehow manages to be very similar and very different to its parent show at the same time. Despite the shared universe and the general The Sandman-esque vibe, Dead Boy Detectives is much more light-hearted and, if we may, fun.
Still, it was a real treat for fans to go full "meme Dicaprio" mode when they saw literally anything — or anyone — directly from The Sandman. The first Endless cameo awaited us right in the first episode, when Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death arrived to collect a soul and Charles and Edwin had...

In the coming months, British actors’ union Equity and producer trade body Pact are expected to kick off negotiations to thrash out new contracts that will cover the vast majority of U.K. TV and indie film. There’s going to be several major sticking points on the table, many that are near-identical to those that dominated the lengthy and fraught talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP in the U.S. last year, not least secondary payments and the hot-button topic of AI.
But while these may be the headline grabbers up for discussion, a group of actors have been campaigning for another issue to be part of the negotiations: hair and makeup equality.
In her 2023 documentary “Untold Stories: Hair on Set,” British actress and filmmaker Fola Evans-Akingbola brought to light how Afro hair had been shockingly overlooked by the U.K. industry in terms of on-set provisions and knowledge.

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” The show premiered on April 25th (you can read our review Here) – and to mark the occasion, a new addition to the team here at JoBlo.com, Kyanna Mondezie, was given the opportunity to conduct interviews with several members of the cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, and Yuyu Kitamura. You can hear what they had to say about their experience working on the show by checking out the video embedded above. Also interviewed were series creator Steve Yockey and showrunner Beth Schwartz.

The much-awaited return of the ghost detectives on the silver screen is finally available on Netflix, and the fans seem to love it. Based on the DC Comics characters of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the Netflix series is created by Steve Yockey and it follows the story of two ghost detectives who decide not to ascent to their afterlives to stay on Earth and investigate the crimes involving the supernatural. Dead Boy Detectives exists in the same universe as Netflix’s hit DC fantasy drama series The Sandman, and while it is different from The Sandman in its story and visuals, the Dead Boy Detectives seem to be connecting with the fans. So, if you loved the charm and supernatural shenanigans in Dead Boy Detectives here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Over the course of the last several years, a mix of kids and paranormal reality that have to deal with has been working wonders for the biggest streaming services.
Proven by Stranger Things’ stunning success ever since its release back in 2016, the new TV formula isn’t actually that new and was initially put into a 33-year-old DC comic book. Now the latter’s plot has finally made its way to big screens and has just landed on Netflix.

Within the first seven minutes, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives tells you exactly what its greatest love story is going to be. Hanging onto the ledge outside the London offices of their supernatural detective agency, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) are waiting out a visit from Death. Kirby reprises her casually cool and soothingly collected version of the reaper from Netflix’s other Neil Gaiman adaptation The Sandman. If Death catches them, it would mean being carted off to the afterlife and separated. For 30 years, the two eternal teenagers have walked just behind the veil of our world as an unbreakable pair and two pretty damn-good detectives. In a tragic sense of irony, they were each other’s first real friend –– they just didn’t meet until after they died. Edwin met his fate in 1916 after being sacrificed to a demon by the bullies of his...

Netflix just got a touch more supernatural with the arrival of “Dead Boy Detectives” where the veil between the worlds thins. This chilling new series isn’t a typical detective show. We are living for Dead Boy Detectives. In Netflix‘s cheeky new dramedy, the supernatural duo created by Neil Gaiman and introduced in The Sandman graphic novels jumps from page to screen, thanks to the utterly lovely chemistry between stars George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri. And to prove that Dead men do tell tales, we asked the guys to explain what’s up with their best mates from the beyond. “My character’s called Edwin Payne, and in 1916, he died as the result of a demonic summoning ritual gone very, very wrong. And that sent him to Hell for 70 years,” offers relative newcomer Rexstrew. “He managed to escape and shortly after his escape, he went back to his old school, St. Hilorian’s, where he died and came across Charles, who was on the cusp of death. Edwin actually nursed him in his final few hours, and when Charles died,...

In Season of Mists, the fourth volume of The Sandmancomics series, Neil Gaiman penned a ghost story set in a British boarding school to demonstrate the problems being caused by Lucifer’s plan to get back at Dream. Gaiman liked the characters enough that he brought them back for a Vertigo Comics crossover event, and they wound up receiving their own spin-off comic from Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham.
Now, the Dead Boy Detectives are receiving their own show from Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz. Set in the same universe as The Sandman, this series follows all the zany thrills and heartwarming moments of Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin’s (George Rexstrew) adventures solving supernatural mysteries that no one else can, with the help of clairvoyant Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and new friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura).
“Charles was more or less me as a boy,” executive producer and Sandman author Gaiman tells Tudum.

Dead Boy Detectives was initially developed for television by HBO Max in 2021. After a long and winding road of purgatory, the series eventually is reaching Netflix in early 2023. (Please note that this has nothing to do with Netflix licensing Max properties as of late.) The adaptation of DC Comics has a cult following that can tap into every popular young demographic.
Now, every comic book property will continuously develop in the ever-competitive streaming landscape. This makes it more surprising how ordinary, at times, Dead Boy Detectives can be, considering Netflix’s binge model. Dead Boy Detectives is like a purgatory Hardy Boys procedural, with the boys trying to solve a new case weekly.
However, as the series progresses, you see its overall potential. You hope the streaming giant will allow Dead Boy Detectives to achieve that potential.

Neil Gaiman is a dreamer. The prolific Hugo-, Nebula-, and Newbery-winning author has spent four decades crafting strange, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying worlds that lure in readers of all ages. His extensive bibliography includes superhero stories for Marvel and DC Comics, dark fairy tales, and a book of Norse mythology — and many of those works have taken on new life as film and TV adaptations, radio plays, or theatrical productions.
Gaiman likes to take a very active role in bringing his writing to new mediums, working with the actors and showrunners to ensure that the results both delight his devoted fans and introduce new audiences to his powerful imagination. He co-developed and served as an executive producer of The Sandman and promises “good things are coming” for its next round of episodes. Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Today, Netflix debuted the official trailer for Dead Boy Detectives, premiering globally on Netflix on Thursday, April 25.
The eclectic composition of characters, based on the beloved comics by Neil Gaiman and brought to life by co-showrunners Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, provides the series with fun, whimsy, humor, and fantastical horror that all come together in perfectly imperfect harmony.
Try not to fall in love with the dead boy detectives and their crew in this trailer as they solve mystifying paranormal cases to the tune of a wonderfully nostalgic rendition of My Chemical Romance’s anthemic ode to the afterlife, “Welcome to the Black Parade.”
Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.
Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency.

With shows like “American Gods,” “Good Omens,” and Netflix’s “Sandman” series based on his works, author Neil Gaiman has really been leading the charge for fantasy shows in the streaming age. And yet Another series adaptation of his work is coming to Netflix on April 25, helping to expand “The Sandman” universe. Netflix has released a new trailer for the upcoming “Dead Boy Detectives,” created by co-showrunners Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) and Beth Schwartz (“Sweet Tooth,” “Arrow”) and based on DC Comics/Vertigo characters that Gaiman and Matt Wagner created in the early 1990s (the sibling supernatural sleuths first appeared in the pages of Gaiman’s “The Sandman” back in 1991).

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” Netflix has set an April 25th premiere date for the show, and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above to see the titular characters deal with paranormal cases while My Chemical Romance plays on the soundtrack.
Since these characters were introduced in the comic book The Sandman, it seems fitting that they ended up on Netflix, as the streamer is also home to the live-action The Sandman series.
