Following months of speculation, Deadline has confirmed that Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas (Ballerina; No Time to Die; Knives Out) has indeed signed on to star opposite Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible; Top Gun: Maverick; Edge of Tomorrow) in his upcoming undersea supernatural thriller Deeper. 

Plot details are buried deep, but the promising feature follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench. 

The film, which has been in the works for nearly a decade, will be helmed by Doug Liman, who previously worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow and American Made, both of which were critical and commercial successes.

Tom Cruise has confirmed that a third Top Gun movie is officially in development. The actor revealed this during an interview with Australia’s Today, saying that the long-awaited sequel is being discussed.

Cruise shared, “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible.” He added that it took him 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so planning the next chapter is a careful process.

Top Gun 3 isn’t the only sequel on Cruise’s mind. He hinted that a follow-up to his sports drama Days of Thunder is also being considered. He said, “We’re discussing [sequels to] Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick. There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now.”

Paramount first confirmed the development of Top Gun 3 back in 2023, with Cruise returning as test pilot and flight instructor Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Imax is embarking on its first-ever foreign language documentary, partnering with Federation Studios and Imago Production on Patrouille de France. The film will chronicle a year in the life of the aerobatics team of the French Air and Space Force, from the selection process and intense training to its signature elite aerial displays. The announcement was made today at the Cannes Film Festival where, three years ago, the troupe buzzed the Palais in a stunning tribute ahead of the Top Gun: Maverick premiere.

Currently in production and set for an early 2026 release, Patrouille de France is being developed in partnership with Paris-based production giant Federation Studios and newly created indie production company Imago Production. Mathieu Giombini directs.

Distribution will be handled by Pathé exclusively in Imax across France, with select international locations to be added following its initial release. Federation Studios will handle non-theatrical distribution.

As the world’s leading movie star, Tom Cruise accomplished a pretty easy mission by touching down at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday night and whipping the city into a frenzy ahead of the Palais premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

Joined by his close friend and franchise collaborator, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise walked the red carpet after signing a slew of autographs and posing for selfies with fans lining the barricades on the Croisette. Fans held Cruise memorabilia, from posters of The Last Samurai to a DVD of Mission: Impossible II. One fan set up a shrine to Val Kilmer, the late co-star of Cruise’s Top Gun.

Cruise and the cast arrived to a musical group performing the famous Mission: Impossible theme. They walked up the carpet, with orchestra players positioned up the red carpet steps of the Palais. McQuarrie took numerous selfies with the cast on an otherwise phone-free carpet.

As Tom Cruise is awaiting the release of his latest tentpole, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, he has a piece of advice for all the aspiring actors. The Hollywood behemoth recently received a British Film Institute Fellowship. Despite being a momentary event in the actor’s life, Cruise could only bemoan the loss of an aspect that highlights the mark of a good actor.

The release date for Glen Powell's new Hulu sports comedy series has been revealed. Though best known for playing Lt. Jake 'Hangman' Seresin opposite Tom Cruise in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and starring alongside Sydney Sweeney in the romantic comedy Anyone But You, Powell has a connection to sports that goes beyond acting, having been a multi-sport athlete and an all-state lacrosse player while attending Westwood High School in Austin, Texas.

As a versatile actor, comedy also has a special place in Powell's acting career, having starred in more than a handful of movies in the genre. After playing the charming but vulnerable Ben in Anyone But You alongside Sweeney, the actor then starred in the dark comedy Hit Man, where he played a college professor who went undercover as a mole.

Chad Powell is heading to the small screen this fall.

Per Variety, it's been announced that Hulu has set Powell's new show, Chad Powers, with a release date of Sept. 30, 2025. In the series, Powell plays washed-up football quarterback Russ Holliday in what could be his most transformative role. The comedy is a half-hour show co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron. Alongside Powell, the series also stars Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Frankie A. Rodriguez, and Steve Zahn.

In the series, per the logline: "When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

A Viral Sketch Inspired the Series

The show is inspired by a viral comedy sketch that was uploaded in 2022 featuring real-life Super Bowl winner Eli Manning, who made the video with he and his brother's Omaha Productions for ESPN+.

Simon Pegg is shutting down any hope for a “Shaun of the Dead” sequel amid its 20th anniversary. Pegg, who collaborated with writer/director Edgar Wright for the “Cornetto Trilogy,” which included “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “The World’s End,” told Variety that he will reunite with Wright for another comedy soon — just not within the “Shaun of the Dead” world.

“It’s lovely to be asked, and the following that film has is the best you can hope for as a filmmaker, but ‘Shaun’ is a story with a beginning, middle and end, and it’s a story that to add to it — like ‘Alien 3′ did to Aliens’ — might end up detracting from the original,” Pegg said. “So certainly when Edgar and I make our next film, we’re going to really disappoint everybody.”

AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater chain in the world, is looking to bring audiences back out to the movies on a weekday by cutting the prices on Wednesday tickets. AMC Theatres announced, via The Hollywood Reporter, that starting Jul. 9, 2025, adult premium movie tickets will be 50% off on Wednesdays to anyone who signs up for AMC Stubs, the theater chain's free rewards program. This will kick into effect after Jurassic World: Rebirth opens in theaters for the Fourth of July weekend, and just before Superman opens in theaters.

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have been reported to be rivals for as long as one can remember, with both of them deemed competitive while striving for the top spot in the entertainment industry. Reports have confirmed the development of Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise returning to his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The previous film, Top Gun: Maverick, turned out to be the highest-grossing film in Cruise’s career. The film featured a bunch of young stars, many of whom went on to build a reputable career since the 2022 film.

A third film in the series would probably be incomplete without these young stars returning to their roles. However, bringing them would make the movie a very expensive affair, given their current star value. Cruise’s salary alone would be a massive cost for the film, as his reported salary for the second film was $100 million (via Variety).

While it took 36 years for the second movie to materialize, the third movie is expected to arrive very soon, offering a fitting conclusion to Cruise’s iconic character.

There’s certainly a case to be made that the film – which launches next month – is pivotal in determining the future of Apple’s experiment with theatrical releases, which in turn could have a meaningful impact on the theatrical industry as a whole.
