A protestor interrupted Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards with a message to “Free Palestine,” and called for a “Ceasefire Now.”
A single protestor standing just outside the security barriers held a loudspeaker that was blaring a short, recorded message about Palestine on a continuous loop.
Attendees at the Indie Spirits, which are held outdoors in a tent on the beach at Santa Monica Pier, could hear the protestor from inside as the show was taking place. The message started being heard as presenter Jim Gaffigan took the stage to present an award to the cast of “Jury Duty.” The protestor could also be heard from the livestream of the show via IMDb TV and Film Independent’s YouTube channels.
A few attendees stepped outside to acknowledge the incident and see what was going on, but the awards show continued. Host Aidy Bryant said on stage, “We’re at the...

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.
Berchtold's Randy is not just your average fast food worker, he might as well be invisible. He's passive to the point of enduring exploitation from everyone around him,...

Tehran, the Israeli spy thriller that airs globally on Apple TV+, has become one of the most high-profile TV series to land a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
The series has been added to the list, which allows production to continue filming, despite the ongoing actors strike. See the updated full list below.
Other high-profile movies such as Dakton Fanning-fronted The Watchers and Sam Raimi-produced Don’t Move have also been granted waivers, as has hit faith series The Chosen.

The series was created by Moshe Zonder, Dana Eden and Maor Kohn and is produced by Donna and Shula Productions, which was formed by Eden and Shula Spiegel. It initially aired on Israeli network Kan 11. Cineflix...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Netflix has released its Top 10 for the week of March 27, and it was little to no surprise that Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston‘s comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2” entered the English language films chart in first place. After all, the original 2019 movie was such a huge hit for Netflix.
The action-comedy sequel entered the charts with 64.4 million hours viewed, the second-biggest launch for a comedy film with 42 million views, appearing in the Top 10 in 91 countries with it being the #1 movie in more than 60 of those countries.
Right behind it was the original “Murder Mystery” with 24.7 million hours viewed globally, and the previous #1 movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun” with 12.7 million viewing hours. The lack of strong family films in theaters allowed four animated films to get into the Top 10 with Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” leading the pack with 6.3 million viewing hours.

The Moffitt family claims they were haunted by a presence known as Mr. Entity several decades ago, and their story went viral when an article about that haunting was published last year. Now that story is set to be told in further detail in the book Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Haunting, written by Jessica Moffitt – and Blumhouse has already acquired the rights to turn the story into an unscripted TV series.
The Moffitts were terrorized by the supernatural spirit Mr. Entity from the late 1980s to early 1990s, keeping the affairs under wraps to all those except paranormal experts. Jessica’s book includes first-hand perspective from herself, Deborah Moffitt, and the rest of the family. The manuscript reveals even more details about the haunting and the family’s background that may uncover connections to their experience.
Blumhouse is developing the unscripted series with ITV America’s Good Caper Content.

Economists around the world infer that the presence of a ‘benevolent patriarch’ in a household provides for harmony and peace in a family. It surely is male-dominated frivolous thinking, but this insane precedent of women being unnoticed, unheard, unseen, and underrepresented leaves us alarmed and concerned. Millions of women go missing, and the biased economy, the social system and the government abandon them to be victims of socio-economic deprivation. In “Unseen,” when Maxwell Mwale is imprisoned and accused of the murder of Yazid Noordien, and later when he is released from jail but doesn’t return home, it unsettles his wife, Zenzile Mwale, making her vulnerable to bias, abuse, sexism, having her dignity violated, and the trauma of losing her beloved husband and Esulu, her son. She is a cleaner, and therefore, no one cares whether she exists or not. Her actions, though invisible, give her an upper hand, allowing...

Unseen is a South African series created by Travis Taute and Daryne Joshua starring Gail Mabalane and Brendon Daniels.
About the Series
Unseen is an interesting South African series that behaves like a classic thriller, but with a realistic tone: it’s a tale full of mysteries where everything revolves around a protagonist who, on going to pick up her husband from prison, it turns out that he is simply not there.
There begins a plot that will lead her through criminal organizations and into the underworld, the descent into hell of a woman full of goodness, a cleaner, who is forced to become a murderess due to circumstance.
Entertaining, well paced, with the impediment of the production. This is not Revenge (the one with Emily VanCamp) nor are we in the Hamptons. Here we travel to a world that, with no pretences, spreads out its nets in the thick of night,...

Netflix’s newest spy thriller series “The Night Agent,” based on the novel by Matthew Quirk and starring Gabriel Basso and recent Oscar nominee Hong Chau, seems to be a bonafide hit for the streamer. It debuted at #1 on the English television list with 168.7 million hours viewed. Created by Shawn Ryan of “The Shield,” the series ending up in the top 10 for 93 countries, many of them at #1. "Pushed, provoked and desperate she will do anything to get her family back." Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for a series called Unseen from South Africa. Available to stream worldwide later in March. Who is Zenzi Mwale? Netflix's new six-part crime thriller Unseen narrates the story of a nondescript domestic worker who goes on a desperate search for her missing husband, and along the way she comes up against powerful and violent criminals. Her reaction to the immense and immediate danger she faces is not as timid as she seems. Starring Gail Mabalane as Zenzi Mwale, the series includes an impressive list of South African actors such as Rapulana Seiphemo, Vuyo Dabula, Colin Moss, Shimmy Isaacs, and Dineo Langa. This looks like it might be a good series, though the music choice for this trailer is a bit odd considering the dark mood and intensity of everything happening.

This week is one of the biggest weeks for horror in the entirety of 2023, as it brings the release of one of the biggest horror movies of 2023. I’m of course talking about Scream VI, which will be slashing its way into theaters nationwide beginning on Thursday night.
The even better news? Scream VI is only one of several new horror movies out this week.
Here’s all the new horror releasing March 7 – March 12, 2023!

A follow-up film from the same team behind 2018’s “Screenlife” thriller Searching, this year’s Missing was released in theaters back in January, pulling in $42.4 million at the worldwide box office. When will you be able to watch Missing at home, you ask? Today!

Plot: A nearsighted woman being pursued through the woods by her homicidal ex has to have a stranger on a video call try to guide her to safety.
Review: Two of the best thrillers to be released in the last few years were John Hyam’s Alone and Randall Okita’s See for Me – and if you were to drop those two movies into a Mixmaster, the resulting concoction would probably be something very much like Yoko Okumura’s feature directorial debut Unseen. Like Alone, Unseen is about a woman escaping from the clutches of a killer who has taken her to a cabin in the woods, running off through the forest in hopes of finding help and civilization. The women in both movies even end up taking a plunge into a river. And as in See for Me, the endangered woman in this movie has vision issues, so she...

When “Unseen” director Yoko Okumura was growing up as a Japanese-American in Minneapolis, the idea of being a director felt completely anathema to her. “Directing was the farthest thing from my mind. My imagination couldn’t go there,” Okumura told TheWrap. “It’s not like I ever saw a Scorsese film and was like, ‘I could be him someday.’ Nobody who looked like me did this job.”
Okumura has used that lack of representation in cinema to cultivate a career as a filmmaker determined to change the paradigm. And it’s paying off, considering she will be making her feature-length directorial debut for Blumhouse with “Unseen,” an intense thriller about Emily, who is kidnapped by her obsessive boyfriend and held captive in the woods. With her glasses smashed in an altercation with her captor, Emily blindly makes a phone call that connects her to a stranger named Sam who might...

It seems like just last month Netflix was releasing the long-awaited fourth season of its stalker drama You. And that’s because it was just last month that Netflix released You Season 4! Now, with its list of new releases for March 2023, Netflix is finishing off what it started with You Season 4 Part 2.
The five episodes that make up You Season 4 Part 2 will premiere on March 9. The ending of Part 1 left things off on quite the cliffhanger so soon we will get to see how Joe (Penn Badgley) reacts to the reveal of the other serial killer in his orbit. Netflix is premiering a fresh season of another one of its TV hits this month as well with Shadow and Bone Season 2 premiering on March 16.

Elsewhere, Emily is waking up bound and without her glasses. She’s been kidnapped by her psychotic ex Charlie who has decided the only way he can move on is to kill her.

Book adaptations became a regular part of the Hollywood narrative in the 2000s, and the craze doesn’t appear to be fading anytime soon. ABC has even jumped on board with their latest television drama, Will Trent, based on a book series by Karin Slaughter. But adaptations always come with loyal fanbases who just want to see their favorite books translated well onscreen. And sometimes, they are very unhappy with the finished product.

"I can't do it alone, I need you!" Paramount Movies + MGM have debuted an official trailer for an indie dark comedy / survival thriller titled Unseen, not to be confused with Steven Soderbergh's psychological thriller Unsane. This is launching directly on VOD for streaming at home in March. Here's the extra wild pitch for this movie: two women form an unlikely connection when Sam, a gas station clerk, receives a misdialed call from Emily, who is running from her murderous ex-boyfriend in the woods. Having lost her glasses in her escape, Emily must rely on Sam’s eyes using the video call and camera in order to survive and make it home. Unseen stars Midori Francis, Jolene Purdy, Missi Pyle, and Michael Patrick Lane, along with a few others. This is an interesting concept that seems especially fake as a movie. I prefer the radical poster (also seen below) more than the trailer,...

The latest Blumhouse film, "Unseen," has a new trailer that just dropped, and it looks like a totally unique offering from the popular horror studio. While Blumhouse is best known for its scary good track record, which includes "Insidious," "The Invisible Man," and "Paranormal Activity," the production company's latest (which also comes via MGM+ and Paramount) is actually a thriller-comedy with a wild high-concept premise.
"Unseen" stars "WandaVision" and "Orange is the New Black" actress Jolene Purdy as Sam, a gas station clerk at a dead-end job at a place called Gator Galore, where her boss seems to be a bullying redneck and she's clearly not having a great time. Enter: Emily ("Dash & Lily" star Midori Francis), a woman who ends up needing Sam's help in a major — and majorly unexpected — way.
