Shailene Woodley has been credited with delivering some of the most entertaining pieces of all time, including her fan-favorite Divergent film series and even the 2013 romcom The Spectacular Now. That said, the fact that she once nearly got kicked out of a $177 million film co-starring George Clooney because of her overacting sounds unbelievable. And yet, it couldn’t be truer.

Turns out, when she auditioned for the 2011 comedy-drama masterpiece The Descendants, the actress was called out about her acting out the scene in a bit too overly exaggerated manner, leading to her nearly getting kicked out of it. In fact, if she hadn’t begged her agents to get a callback for this particular piece, perhaps Woodley may have even ended up losing out on the role!

Back in late September 2024, 20th Century Studios announced that it would be remaking the 1992 thriller classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with Longlegs actress Maika Monroe leading the cast. Now, we've just learned of a potential new cast addition. Scream queen Mary Elizabeth Winstead is reportedly in talks to join the remake, starring opposite Monroe.
Conversations are currently being had about Winstead joining the movie, but she has not officially signed on yet. Fingers crossed, an official agreement is reached because we would love to see her and fellow scream queen Maika Monroe act together, especially after knowing who they will be playing in the movie.

One of the standout memories from my last semester of college was hearing the strong word-of-mouth around the breakout from that year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Whiplash.” I can remember the excitement around a new, potentially generational filmmaker bursting onto the scene, as well as an intense, young actor starting to make his mark in films like “Rabbit Hole,” “The Spectacular Now,” and now this. Moreover, having just binged the HBO prison drama “Oz,” I was thrilled by the possibility of one its ensemble cast members, J.K. Simmons, taking on a role that required him to lean on his more sociopathic abilities.
The first time I saw the film, winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, it was followed by a Q&a with Simmons in which he spoke on the animalistic nature of his character, jazz instructor Terence Fletcher, and how, despite Damien Chazelle’s youthful appearance,...

It's finally the weekend, which just so happens to coincide with the beginning of August. The start of a new month always brings dozens of new releases to Netflix, and it can be overwhelming to learn what's been added to the streamer and what should be added to your watch list.
On the first of August, Netflix dropped so many great new releases, including Fire Country season 1, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, two Dr. Seuss movies, multiple Chucky movies and more horror, White Chicks, The Spectacular Now, and plenty of great picks for a binge-watch weekend.
In the spirit of the Olympics and watching Simone Biles win gold, you could bypass the new releases and check out the first two episodes of the Olympic gymnast's documentary series Simone Biles Rising. More new releases, like Unsolved Mysteries and Prison Break, are also in the top 10.

Few people nowadays probably can’t say that they have a favorite film company because of how much the industry has changed. The film genre has become oversaturated with superhero films, leading most people to start a conversation by asking, “Marvel or DC?” We don’t talk about what other companies are putting out or even acknowledge the future films that are coming out. Also, the way Walt Disney Studios has bought other companies makes it challenging for the common audience to step out and watch anything else. However, one company has been talked about a lot recently due to the films they’re distributing or making, and it's the A24 company. Miles Teller is staying in the Navy — maybe because he’s got nowhere else to go.
Deadline reports that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star is set to star in a modern retelling of “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the 1982 romantic drama starring Richard Gere.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” was a massive hit that turned Gere and Debra Winger into two of the biggest stars of the era. It follows Zack Mayo, a troubled young naval pilot cadet, and his relationships with his demanding drill instructor Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) and Paul Pokrifki, a woman who lives in the town near the base. Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, making Oscars history as the first Black winner in the category. Paramount is updating “An Officer and a Gentleman” with Miles Teller set to star.
Teller will take on the lead role in the modern take on the 1982 classic starring Richard Gere, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the best original song prize for “Up Where We Belong” and marking Louis Gossett Jr.’s historic achievement of becoming the first Black best supporting actor Oscar winner.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” centered on Gere’s Zack Mayo, an aspiring Navy aviator who clashes with his hard-nosed drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Gossett) while navigating a budding romance with Paula (Debra Winger), a factory worker with dreams of getting out of her small town. The Taylor Hackford-directed romantic drama was also a box office smash, earning $190 million globally.
Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script for the new movie, following a draft written by Matt Johnson.

Not only does he have this feature debut movie premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and it's getting rave reviews (and it won the Audience Award), he's also probably going to win an Academy Award in March for his short film Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó about his grannies (it's also streaming on Disney+ in February). Sundance has a memorably rich tradition of premiering many of the best coming-of-age films of all-time, ranging from 500 Days of Summer to Napoleon Dynamite to Little Miss Sunshine to The Spectacular Now to Clerks to Eighth Grade to Boyhood, and so many others over the years. Sean Wang's Dìdi (弟弟) instantly joins the ranks as yet another outstanding coming-of-age...

After directing three “Night at the Museum” movies, Shawn Levy didn’t want to be confined to directing family comedies for the rest of his career. If you’re doing something successfully, he told IndieWire, it’s easy to be “pigeonholed” by Hollywood into that one thing.
But he’s been far from limited under the banner of his own production company, 21 Laps. Levy and his company have been prolific hit-makers since it launched in 2006, and he has produced and directed everything from indie darlings (“The Spectacular Now”), ambitious Best Picture nominees (“Arrival”), studio blockbuster satires (“Free Guy“), prestige limited series (“All the Light We Cannot See”), Stephen King horror movies (“The Boogeyman”), and the biggest Netflix show ever (“Stranger Things”), all of which depart from the family-friendly event movies on which he cut his teeth.
“You need to refuse to be limited by everyone else’s assumptions,” Levy told IndieWire during a recent interview.

[This story contains spoilers from the finale of Lessons in Chemistry.]
Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson has had supporting roles in romantic comedies like The Spectacular Now and Trainwreck. But in Lessons in Chemistry, she gets to tell a love story of her own.
“Part of my initial interest in this story is that love depictions are so sacred and so important, and how they come to you and why they come to you is part of the magic of this life,” says Larson, who stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Zott in the Apple TV+ series. “It also means it’s very hard to grapple with.”
Deciding how best to show that struggle in bringing the narrative drawn from Bonnie Garmus’ novel of the same to TV is something Larson worked on closely with as an executive producer with showrunner Lee Eisenberg, who developed the series. Embodying Zott, a chemist who can no longer rely on...

A version of this story about Scott Neustadter and “Daisy Jones and the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Scott Neustadter wasn’t born when the rock ‘n’ roll scene depicted in “Daisy Jones & the Six” was taking place in Los Angeles in the late 1960s through the mid ’70s, and neither were most of the cast and creators of the limited series on Amazon’s Prime Video. But Neustadter and his writing partner Michael H. Weber, who’d written “500 Days of Summer,” “The Spectacular Now” and “The Disaster Artist” before they developed “Daisy Jones,” had to become experts in the era they recreated for the series based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel.
Did they get it all right? Of course not. (Read on for some nit-picking from somebody who is old enough to have been there.) But for the most part,...

“Daisy Jones & the Six” has arrived. Fans of the bestselling Taylor Jenkins Reid novel of the same name have been anxiously awaiting Amazon Prime Video’s TV series adaptation of the book, and the story of this fictional 1970s rock band is unfolding over a number of weeks on the streaming service.
The story is one told in a grand flashback, as members of the titular band sit down for a documentary about their rise (and fall?) and the show then presents the story as it happened back in the ’70s. The book is a full-on oral history, but in the TV series, what we see is what actually happened – not peoples’ own versions of events – so we witness how Sam Claflin’s rocker Billy Dunne reluctantly allows aspiring songwriter and performer Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) to work on one of The Six’s songs. The resulting smash hit...

Daisy Jones & the Six may be the most-read-about fake band in history. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel about a fictional seventies rock group of the same name has sold well over a million copies and has a bonkers 940,000 ratings on literary social media hub Goodreads — so the pressure to deliver a TV version is a bit higher than with most adaptions.

In 1978, the Kinks sang: “He just spends his life, living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy; He just spends his life, living on the edge of reality.” This mid-1970s sentiment of California dreamin’ foregrounds a young woman with that same impossible, crazy and ultimately disenchanting dream — singer, songwriter, flame-haired trainwreck Daisy Jones played by the perfectly cast firecracker Riley Keough, Elvis’ granddaughter, in Amazon Prime Video’s “Daisy Jones & the Six.”
It’s part the familiar saga of the rise and splatter of a band like “Fleetwood Mac,” circa the album “Rumours:” the drugs, the demons and the outsized desires of its members. And then, driven by a spectacular performance by Keough, it’s about the power of finding one’s voice and hoping the journey liberates rather than destroys the seeker.

When Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were cast to portray romantic interests in The Spectacular Now, they had no idea they’d form such a strong relationship off-screen. But working on the small film would spark the formation of a close friendship that still persists today. The actors have both stated multiple times that they truly enjoy working together and spending time together outside of work. But did they think they’d hit it off so well when they first met? Teller once gave his genuine first impression of Woodley.

Shailene Woodley recently put down roots in Los Angeles by purchasing a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. But it wasn’t so long ago that the actor was embracing a more nomadic lifestyle. Long-time fans of Woodley know that in her 20s, the Three Women actor was fond of couch-surfing. In between filming projects, she’d often crash at her friends’ places all over the world. And it seems like Miles Teller wasn’t afraid to razz her a bit for it.

“Shrinking” is the bastard love child of “Ted Lasso” and “Scrubs.” The funny, self-aware, wonderfully cast workplace comedy centers on a small Pasadena psychological practice. From there, it moves out in spokes into the family lives, mental obsessions and dysfunction of its three main shrinks: Jason Segel, Jessica Williams and, yes, Harrison Ford.
Laughter, life lessons, hugs, jabs and serial ridiculous situations cram this ten-part comedy. “Shrinking” begins with an absurd meet-awkward between audience and therapist. We encounter central mensch-meshuggah Jimmy (Jason Segel at his most neurotic teddy bearish) in his own backyard.
The mind-doctor has reached rock bottom. He’s snorting a mix of psychiatric drugs while hanging by his backyard pool at 3 a.m., blaring music with two young sex workers mermaid-ing in the chlorinated water nearby. He’s momentarily blissed, high – and a really crappy clueless neighbor in his pricy South Pasadena neighborhood.
The sad truth is...

Cameron Crowe’s “Roadies” failed to strike a chord and create a TV series about 1970s rockers on the road and tales of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll that audiences loved. But show creators Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (“The Spectacular Now”) are hoping their similar-sounding version, starring Riley Keough, will convince you otherwise with the new Prime Video series “Daisy Jones & The Six.”

"You write songs about who you wish you were, not who you are." Prime Video has revealed a new official trailer for a streaming series coming this March titled Daisy Jones & The Six, about a (fictional) rock band from the 1970s. It's made by director James Ponsoldt and the writers behind 500 Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now. The series follows the rise of rock band Daisy Jones and The Six through the '70s LA music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status. While the story is presented in a documentary style, including background interviews with the band, this is an entirely fictional story that captures the essence of creativity in the erratic, wild world of the 1970s. "It's time to hear the real story." Daisy Jones & The Six stars Riley Keough as the titular Daisy, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Nabiyah Be, Will Harrison,...
