The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been such a coveted hub of entertainment that it’s either the place where everyone is or everyone wants to be. The popularity of the franchise comes with its own perks, as you get access to unlimited resources, and people from every country that has an accessible film theater become familiar with your work. But it has its downsides because the franchise works like a conveyor belt and every project has a stupid deadline that stifles creativity. And since a lot of directors are in there, sometimes for very long periods of time, it’s interesting to see how the process of making a Marvel project has affected their vision and whether that change is palpable in their post-mcu career. Jon Favreau made the amazing Chef and then went right into the conveyor belt with Disney remakes and Star Wars’ Mandalorian IP. James Gunn made the fantastic The Suicide Squad.

Justin Chon first came to the world’s attention playing Eric Yorkie, a supporting character in the Twilight movies. The global success of that young-vampires-in-love franchise helped Chon land lead roles in films such as 21 & Over, Revenge of the Green Dragons, and Seoul Searching, but all the while, the freshly minted movie star was honing his craft as a writer and director. First came 2015’s little-seen Man Up (“That was my film school”), then the breakthrough of Gook, which won the Next Audience Award at Sundance in 2017. A bracing look at the 1992 Rodney King riots from a […]

Jack the Giant Slayer easily took first place at the box office on Friday, though its gross was unimpressive to say the least. 21 and Over and The Last Exorcism Part II also disappointed, and are on their way to less than $10 million for the weekend.Jack opened to an estimated $7.7 million from 3,525 locations yesterday. That's worse than almost all comparable titles, including last March's big-budget debacle John Carter ($9.8 million). It was even lower than star Nicholas Hoult's last movie, the modestly-budgeted Warm Bodies ($8.14 million). Based on similar movies in this time frame, it's likely that Jack the Giant Slayer ends the weekend with less than $24 million.21 and Over took second place on Friday with an estimated $3.34 million. That's less than half of Project X's $8.1 million start at the exact same time last year. If 21 follows that pattern*which is reasonable to expect, given their obvious similarities*it will...
