The pamphlet "The Peacemaker" was published in 1842. The author was Udney Hay Jacob, who was not a member of the LDS church at the time. The printer was Joseph Smith, who nevertheless denounced it. Jacob became a member of the LDS church in 1843. There is a controversy over whether Smith had Jacob write it as a "feeler" to see if the LDS community would accept it. Smith and others in the LDS leadership practiced plural marriage secretly in the 1830s and the 1840s. It wasn't practiced publicly until 8 years after Smith was killed.
