Image
Hell on Wheels is perfect for American Primeval lovers ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

Western fans left starved after the gritty ride of American Primeval might just find their next obsession in a series that once flew under the radar.

Long buried but far from forgotten, Hell on Wheels has resurfaced and is finally getting the recognition it deserves. The show, originally premiering in 2011, is now enjoying a second life on Freevee, climbing into the platform’s top ten and introducing a fresh wave of viewers to its dust-choked drama.

Hell on Wheels: The Plot

Hell on Wheels, set in the raw aftermath of the Civil War, throws viewers into 1865 America, where blood hasn’t yet dried and revenge is a hot commodity. At the center is Cullen Bohannon (played by Anson Mount), a former Confederate soldier chasing ghosts through the chaos of the transcontinental railroad’s construction.

“Cowboys and Trains Kind of Go Together”: ‘Dark Winds’ Showrunner Explains That Season 3 Finale Shootout
Image
Dark Winds rode the rails in its third-season finale, as Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) chased down a murderer making his way out of town on a train. In a new Hollywood Reporter interview with Dark Winds showrunner John Wirth and director Chris Eyre, they revealed the reasoning behind the Wild West-style showdown. Not only did it tie in with the show's Western themes, but one of the show's executive producers happened to own a locomotive.

The series finale is titled "Béésh Łį́į́ (Iron Horse)," a reference to the nickname for the steam engines that "tamed" the West. Says Wirth, who previously worked on AMC's Western series Hell on Wheels, "You know, cowboys and trains kind of go together, and in a neo-Western like this one, it felt like there would be a train." And where did they get the train? George R. R. Martin,...

There Are Dark Clouds Over the Leaphorns' Marriage in New 'Dark Winds' Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
There's a dark cloud over Joe and Emma Leaphorn's marriage in a new Collider-exclusive clip from this week's all-new Dark Winds. Last week's shocking revelation has driven a wedge between the two, even as a new, deadly mystery stalks the US Southwest. "Tsékǫ̨’ Hasą́ní (Coal Mine Canyon)," Episode 5 of Dark Winds' Season 3, will premiere on Sunday, April 6, at 9 Pm Et on AMC, and will stream the next day on AMC+.

Last week saw Emma Leaphorn (Deanna Allison) find out about the terrible choice her husband, Joe (Zahn McClarnon), made last season; confronted with the knowledge that local businessman B.J. Vines (John Diehl) had engineered the death of their son and several other men in a mining disaster years earlier, Joe took Vines out into the desert and left him to fend for himself. He thought he'd left it behind him, but this season, Vines' skeletal corpse was discovered,...

Why The Malcolm In The Middle Revival Replaced Dewey's Actor
Image
"Malcolm in the Middle" is one of the best sitcoms of the 2000s. It's a chaotic, delightfully weird, absurd, and darkly funny comedy about the most dysfunctional family on TV. This is not a simple case of "parents just don't understand," but, rather, a case of deeply flawed grown-ups way in over their heads who also have to deal with having the spawns of Satan for kids.

What made the show so special was its cast. Sure, it's easy to say a series that lasted for seven seasons did so because it had a great ensemble, but "Malcolm in the Middle" was truly perfect in this regard. Whether it's Bryan Cranston being the God of Sweet Buffoons as the patriarch Hal (a role so good it almost cost Cranston his chance at starring in "Breaking Bad") or Justin Berfield basically playing a live-action Bart Simpson as Reese (think about it...

10 Best Western Series Streaming Right Now
Image
More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.

Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix

Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

Western Series 'Hell on Wheels' Finds Success on Free Streaming
Image
A criminally underrated Western series is raising hell on free streaming as it forges a path up the ranks and into the top 10. Beginning more than a decade ago in 2011, Hell on Wheels transports audiences all the way back to 1865 and follows a former Confederate soldier who, while tackling demons in his war-torn past, plans a mission of revenge amid the emerging Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

Created and produced by Joe and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels was initially broadcast on AMC, and ran for five seasons. Led by Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, the rest of the cast includes Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Common (John Wick: Chapter 2), and Dominique McElligott (The Boys).

Hell on Wheels did find a small cult following at the time, but now that the series is available to stream on Freevee, the show has reached heights of #9 in the top 10 so far.

Westerns have been enjoying something of a return to form in recent years. Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone helped to usher in a new era of on-screen Westerns, but No Country for Old Men (2007), 3:10 To Yuma (2007), Django Unchained (2012), The Hateful Eight (2015), and countless other 2000s Westerns helped to keep the genre alive. Today, Landman, American Primieval, Longmire, Hell on Wheels, and other Westerns have thrived on the small screen. Just as fantasy and drama have moved away from theaters, television has quickly claimed a Hollywood genre staple.

Still, the Western is not necessarily dead in theaters. The genre continues to see new releases to this day. Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian is expecting to see a theatrical adaptation, Ari Aster is hard at work on Eddington,...

Since then, the Irish-born actor has gone on to appear in popular series like Hell on Wheels alongside another Star Trek actor, Anson Mount, who is now playing Captain Christopher Pike on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The prolific actor has maintained a busy schedule since his time on Star Trek came to an end, and now, he's being honored for his fifty-year career by being awarded the Irish Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. Dame Judi Dench and Gabriel Byrne have been two of the other recipients of the award, and Meaney was quite surprised when he was announced as 2025's recipient.

When you kill a man, he’s bound to you. I’ve accepted it. And I am prepared to go on living with it, every day,” Leaphorn reveals in the third season trailer.

That’s followed by Tribal Police officer Jimmy Chee (Kiowa Gordon) appearing to try, without success, to get a severely wounded Leaphorn on the phone as his partner confronts a monster trying to stalk and kill him.

The Forgotten 2010 Dwayne Johnson Action Thriller Flop Killing It On Netflix
Image
For the first 10 years of his movie acting career, Dwayne Johnson was hungry to earn his bonafides as a serious performer. Oh sure, he was more than willing to play to the cheap seats by starring in stuff like "The Scorpion King" and "Doom." But this was also the era in which the wrestling legend worked with "Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly on his gonzo cult curiosity "Southland Tales" and gleefully preened in front of a mirror as an out-and-proud gay bodyguard in F. Gary Gray's "Get Shorty" sequel "Be Cool." Having yet to establish a clean-cut brand for himself, the 2000s saw The Rock taking the kind of risks he would shirk for a decade after finally making it big in the movies.

That extended to Johnson's action films as well. When The Rock showed up as Luke Hobbs in 2011's "Fast Five" (only one of the...

Absolution Review: Liam Neeson delivers more emotion than bullets in this solid drama
Image
Plot: An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.

Review: Over the last sixteen years, Liam Neeson has consistently delivered a string of variations on his 2008 hit Taken. Outside of a handful of exceptions, the Oscar-nominated actor has made movie after movie about cops and soldiers using their particular sets of skills to take down bad guys who underestimate the elderly protagonist. As those projects have begun to blur together, Neeson has had some tricks up his sleeve with voice work in The Lego Movie, comedic turns in A Million Ways To Die In The West, and the occasional big-budget offering. The ones that utilize Neeson’s gravitas and everyman demeanor have stood out from the over fifty projects he has acted on or voiced during that span. You can add Absolution to that shortlist.

The Best Westerns You May Have Missed
Image
Gun-slinging capers and epic posse rides into the sunset have excited the imagination of audiences around the world for over 100 years. The Western remains a staple of movies to this day and has strong narrative footholds that subscribe to audiences that love a certain mix of grit, romance, survival, and history on their entertainment menu. There are many under-the-radar yet Hollywood-made westerns that have all the ingredients and budget to successfully invent within the genre. However, not all of them took, and some were everything an audience could want from a Western, but it just wasn't the right time. Like most films in an era of oversaturation, it's a matter of time that...

10 Best AMC Shows Since 2015, Ranked
Image
With undeniable classics like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead under its belt, AMC has established itself since the late 2000s as a singular voice in television production. AMC shows cover a wide swath of genres and styles, but it has developed a signature strategy of taking on unique properties that often push the boundaries of what's shown on TV. From solidifying the concept of "prestige" TV with acting heavyweights in Mad Men and Breaking Bad to unflinching genre fare like Moonhaven or Hell on Wheels, AMC has transformed itself from a classic films channel to a major voice in TV in less than two decades.

That's a rapid turn-around in the world of TV, but AMC has continuously reified its status as a destination for original programming throughout the 2000s, 2010s, and now 2020s with frequent attempts at launching new shows. Though its founding shows like Breaking Bad...

Liam Neeson's Exciting New Action Movie Continues A Trend That Started 16 Years Ago With $226M Hit
Image
Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.

The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.

Absolution will be released on November 1, 2024.

‘The Thing About Pam’ Offshoot ‘The Thing About Tommy’ In Works At Peacock
Image
Exclusive: Another true crime limited series franchise, The Thing About..., is looking to join the likes of American Crime Story, Monster and Dr. Death. Peacock is developing The Thing About Tommy, from writer Bruce Marshall Romans and the companies behind the 2022 NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, NBC News Studios and Blumhouse, sources tell Deadline. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The Thing About Tommy is inspired by the true story of Thomas Randolph, nicknamed “Black Widower,” who has been married six times and four of those wives ended up dead.

Like The Thing About Pam, which chronicled Pam Hupp’s involvement in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, The Thing About Tommy stems from Dateline’s coverage of the case. (The venerable NBC newsmagazine profiled Randolph in the multi-part series The Widower.)

After premiering on NBC, The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger as Hupp,...

Anson Mount's Breakout Show Is Perfect To Watch While Waiting For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3
Image
With the highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 expected in 2025, Captain Christopher Pike actor Anson Mount's breakout role in another series could provide the perfect binge-watch in the meantime. Mount has a varied career, from small roles in Sex in the City to Law and Order. He didn't become Captain Pike until joining Star Trek: Discovery season 2's cast in 2019. Before taking to the stars, though, Mount starred in his breakout role in a very different setting.

In 2011, AMC released a Western called Hell on Wheels, and Anson Mount landed the starring role as battle-worn soldier Cullen Bohannon. Set in the late 19th century and following the story of a traveling town following the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, Hell on Wheels couldn't be further removed from the Star Trek timeline. Hell on Wheels' 5 seasons provide an amazing opportunity for Star Trek fans to get their...

Hulu subscribers will have a chance to check out an underappreciated Western series this month. On Sept. 15, the streaming platform will add all five seasons of Hell on Wheels.

Created by Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels originally ran for fives seasons on AMC between 2011 and 2016. Its reviews were largely positive with the fifth and final season garnering especially strong acclaim with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite sticking the landing, the series doesn't seem to have garnered the attention it deserved in recent years, though its fan base continues to grow as more people discover the show.
