Western fans left starved after the gritty ride of American Primeval might just find their next obsession in a series that once flew under the radar.

Long buried but far from forgotten, Hell on Wheels has resurfaced and is finally getting the recognition it deserves. The show, originally premiering in 2011, is now enjoying a second life on Freevee, climbing into the platform’s top ten and introducing a fresh wave of viewers to its dust-choked drama.

Hell on Wheels: The Plot

Hell on Wheels, set in the raw aftermath of the Civil War, throws viewers into 1865 America, where blood hasn’t yet dried and revenge is a hot commodity. At the center is Cullen Bohannon (played by Anson Mount), a former Confederate soldier chasing ghosts through the chaos of the transcontinental railroad’s construction.

Dark Winds rode the rails in its third-season finale, as Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) chased down a murderer making his way out of town on a train. In a new Hollywood Reporter interview with Dark Winds showrunner John Wirth and director Chris Eyre, they revealed the reasoning behind the Wild West-style showdown. A criminally underrated Western series is raising hell on free streaming as it forges a path up the ranks and into the top 10. Beginning more than a decade ago in 2011, Hell on Wheels transports audiences all the way back to 1865 and follows a former Confederate soldier who, while tackling demons in his war-torn past, plans a mission of revenge amid the emerging Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

Created and produced by Joe and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels was initially broadcast on AMC, and ran for five seasons. Led by Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, the rest of the cast includes Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Common (John Wick: Chapter 2), and Dominique McElligott (The Boys).

Hell on Wheels did find a small cult following at the time, but now that the series is available to stream on Freevee, the show has reached heights of #9 in the top 10 so far.

In advance of the series’ upcoming Season 3 premiere, AMC Networks announced today that it has renewed the critically acclaimed and popular noir drama Dark Winds for a fourth season. The expanded, eight-episode, third season premieres March 9 on AMC and AMC+.

Season 4 of Dark Winds, which will begin filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March, will also consist of eight, hour-long episodes. The new season will also see the directorial debut of series’ star and executive producer, Zahn McClarnon, and will debut exclusively on AMC and AMC+ in 2026.

“When we greenlit the first season of Dark Winds, we saw the potential for an authentic and long-running franchise that could live alongside the worlds we were building around The Walking Dead and Anne Rice,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

“That is exactly what this cast and creative team delivered, and the fans have responded.

AMC Networks’ acclaimed period drama Dark Winds has been renewed for a fourth season, nearly two weeks ahead of its Season 3 premiere on Sunday, March 9 (on AMC and AMC+).

The eight-episode Season 4 — which is set to begin filming this March in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with an eye on a 2026 release — will mark the directorial debut of series star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon.

“To say I was surprised when I got the news that IFTA wanted to give me this award, would be an understatement. I was truly shocked,” said Meaney, per Variety. “To be asked to join this long list of very illustrious previous recipients is a huge honour, and I’m thrilled and looking forward to a good night in Dublin,” added the actor. Meaney is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement award at the IFTA awards on Feb.

AMC Networks has revealed a teaser trailer and first-look images from the highly-anticipated upcoming season of its hit noir drama, Dark Winds, which will return with all new episodes exclusively on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, March 9 at 9pm Et/Pt. The first two seasons of the critically lauded series both have perfect 100-point scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon, Jessica Matten and Deanna Allison. Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.

The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.

Peacock is developing The Thing About Tommy, from writer Bruce Marshall Romans and the companies behind the 2022 NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, NBC News Studios and Blumhouse, sources tell Deadline. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The Thing About Tommy is inspired by the true story of Thomas Randolph, nicknamed “Black Widower,” who has been married six times and four of those wives ended up dead.

Like The Thing About Pam, which chronicled Pam Hupp’s involvement in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, The Thing About Tommy stems from Dateline’s coverage of the case. (The venerable NBC newsmagazine profiled Randolph in the multi-part series The Widower.)

While the new season will be quite a wait compared to how fast the network managed to get Season 2 out, the show is currently gearing up for its third season. On the other hand, Netflix has recently launched the AMC Collection. Many shows that were previously only available on AMC+ can now be enjoyed on Netflix. Dark Winds is one of the shows that's joining the Netflix platform.

The acclaimed Neo-noir thriller series enjoyed 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores for both seasons. Setting its scene in the Navajo Nation in Arizona in the 1970s, Dark Winds takes viewers down a path of both crime-solving and spiritual healing. From the writers' room to the cast and crew members, the show is primarily made by Native American creatives.

With the highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 expected in 2025, Captain Christopher Pike actor Anson Mount's breakout role in another series could provide the perfect binge-watch in the meantime. Created by Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels originally ran for fives seasons on AMC between 2011 and 2016. Its reviews were largely positive with the fifth and final season garnering especially strong acclaim with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite sticking the landing, the series doesn't seem to have garnered the attention it deserved in recent years, though its fan base continues to grow as more people discover the show.
