Siu-Wong Fan's 10 Best Kung Fu Movies
Image
Siu-Wong Fan, also credited as Louis Fan in some of his work, is a martial artist and Hong Kong actor who made a name for himself as the titular character in Riki-Oh. Fan's father worked for the Shaw Brothers Studio and, after learning wushu at a young age, it was clear his talents were destined for film. While Fan does have a prominent role in quite a few Ip Man films, most of his work is as a supporting character.

Throughout his career, Fan has worked alongside some of the biggest kung fu movie stars of all time. Actors like Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen are just a few people Fan has had the opportunity to work with and prove his martial arts skills are not to be underestimated. The best of Fan's work can be found in a range of kung fu films, from the dramatic origin story of...

Film Review: Longmen Town Inn (2021) by Yin Qing Ze
Image
Mainland China, July 2021: Another day another online movie made its way to the massively popular video streaming platforms there to catch the roving eyes of the viewers looking for a quick fix. Produced by Henan Guanglan Culture and starring a bunch of unknown actors, at least outside of China anyway, Tencent Video's “Longmen Town Inn” or “Dragon Gate Town Inn” in Chinese, is one such production like many countless more.

Set in a nameless desert, the simple plot concerns Wu Long Jian Xian (Chu Xiao Long), a peerless swordsman who has to fight off challengers from other cults eager to take him down in order to claim the top position in Jianghu. Ultimately this leads to a standoff at Broken Soul Cliff in which he is the sole survivor and thereupon he also decides to live in seclusion.

Film Review: Treasure Inn (2011) by Wong Jing
Image
During the early nineties in Hong Kong, the prolific screenwriter, producer, director and sometime actor Wong Jing made quite a number of crowd-pleasing action comedies which was a highly popular genre back then. Although wacky and action packed in nature, his films like “Tricky Brains”, “Royal Tramp”, “Legend of the Liquid Sword”, “Flying Dagger”, “Holy Weapon” and so on were commercially successful productions. Fast forward to 2011 and with a bigger Mainland budget, plus the help of two award-winning actors, Wong ws back and doing pretty much the same old thing. Set in White Horse Town, ancient China, “Treasure Inn” revolves around young Master Kung (Nicholas Tse) and Lo Pa (Nick Cheung), two lowly and underappreciated constables who work in the courthouse kitchen and laundry instead of doing proper investigating duties.

‘The Battle at Lake Changjin’ Review: A Patriotic Chinese View of the Korean War
Image
Errors and omissions are standard features of historical dramas everywhere. It is therefore no surprise to find Korean War history being filtered to suit domestic requirements in the three-hour Chinese blockbuster “The Battle at Lake Changjin.” Nor is it unexpected for U.S. military characters to be cardboard cutouts with excruciatingly bad dialogue. And, like many other jingoistic war epics, this prestige production co-directed by industry heavyweights Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark and Dante Lam

The latest in a long line of strongly nationalistic films released during the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, “The Battle at Lake Changjin” has collected almost all its $905 million revenue (as of Dec. 27) from domestic ticket sales. It is currently the highest grossing film of 2021, with only “Spider-Man: No Way Out” and “No Time to Die” as serious rivals for the top spot.

This very old-fashioned production depicts a string of military engagements during...

Half a Dozen Character Posters for The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate
Need more one-sheets for the upcoming Tsui Hark action flick “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”? Of course you do! Everyone needs more promotional material in their lives, especially when they’re hyper-stylish character posters. All six of ‘em are embedded below. They’re not bad, as these sort of things go, though I think I prefer the first batch over these. If you missed them, you can always click here to be magically transported to the article in question. “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”, apparently, is a remake of Hark’s own film. Weird. This version stars Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. The flick opens in China in December. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to wait. Darn it. Three New Swanky Posters for Flying Swords of Dragon Gate
I like swanky posters. I really do. So yes, I love these three character posters for Tsui Hark’s upcoming “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”. They are, in a word, swanky. A remake of Hark’s own film, the new and minty “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” is set during the Ming Dynasty, and follows one those powerful eunuchs who is violently crushing revolts and establishing a reign of terror across China. With his troops on hand, the eunuch proceeds toward the titular Dragon Gate with the idea of terminating the rest of those pesky rebels, but finds instead plenty of flying swords awaiting him. That’ll teach the eunuch. Starring Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. Hong Kong and China gets the film first in December. Thanks to Qing for the heads up. Watch: Teaser Trailer for Tsui Hark's 'Flying Swords of Dragon Gate'
Time for some quick, morning wuxia action. McN via The Playlist has found an official trailer, which I would call more of a teaser trailer, for Tsui Hark's new martial arts epic The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, starring Jet Li as well as Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Li Yuchun, Kwai Lun-mei, Louis Fan and Mavis Fan. The film is a remake of King Hu's Dragon Gate Inn (1966) and Raymond Lee's New Dragon Gate Inn (1992) and was shot in 3D. There are some very interesting shots in this, I thought it was worth featuring today. Check out that final scene with the huge sand tornadoes. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it looks cool! Watch the first teaser trailer for Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, via YouTube: A Ming dynasty general played by Jet Li finds himself at odds with a power-hungry eunuch,...
