Interview: Jeff Nichols – The Passenger, Stella Maris, Land of Opportunity, The Yankee Comandante
Image
Before Jeff Nichols took the indie film world (with Take Shelter) by storm—both literally and figuratively—he made his mark with Shotgun Stories (premiered at the Berlinale in 2007), a poignant tragi-drama about a fractured family that descends into quiet, simmering violence. Both portraits showcased Nichols’ ability to weave complex family dynamics with understated tension. In just under two decades, the Little Rock, Arkansas native has steadily built a compelling body of work, delivering six feature films that blend Americana with intimate portraits of home and family. His characters range from outsiders and outlaws to ordinary individuals simply striving to carve out a space for themselves in the world.…...

Why Didn't Edward Show Up? Nocturnal Animals Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
The Nocturnal Animals ending is one of the movie's most talked-about aspects. The 2016 thriller ends on an emotionally gut-wrenching yet ambiguous note. Nocturnal Animals stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a writer named Edward, who sends his latest novel manuscript to his ex-wife Susan (Amy Adams). As Susan immerses herself in the nail-biting tale of violence and death, she revisits the ups and downs of her own failed marriage with Edward. The novel's premise serves as a parallel storyline in Nocturnal Animals, capturing its protagonist, Tony's pain as he tries to get over his wife and daughter's assault and murder.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Edward and Tony, the dual role allowing him to capture the emotional nuances of both characters. While Edward struggles with his professional insecurities and romantic missteps, Tony seeks nothing but blood-stained revenge for the drifters who destroyed his family. Interestingly, the neo-noir psychological thriller is based on Austin Wright's 1993 novel,...

Four underrated gems leaving Netflix in December
Image
Some heavy hitters are leaving Netflix at the end of the month. Jaws, 8 Mile, The Deer Hunter, and Psycho all sign off on December 31. That’s a combined nine Oscars and 18 nominations. If you haven’t seen any of them, I’d suggest you get them on your list Asap.

Jaws is simply one of the greatest American action films ever made. Many critics don’t even bother with the “one of the best” when referring to Psycho. It is often considered the very best American horror. 8 Mile is a standout musical biopic, unsurpassed in the world of hip-hop. And The Deer Hunter, though difficult, controversial, and ever so slightly dated by now, was still a vital Vietnam War movie that took Best Picture for 1978.

But there are also some minor gems saying goodbye. So, if you’ve already seen the above-mentioned titles, or if the prospect of...

Tom Hardy Crime Drama 'The Bikeriders' Rides Lands on Prime Video
Image
Today is a great day for Tom Hardy fans, as one of the Warrior and Venom star’s highest rated (yet most disappointing when it comes to box office) crime dramas lands on Prime Video. Released in December last year, The Bikeriders finds Hardy starring alongside Austin Butler and Jodie Comer in this tale of a Midwestern motorcycle club who finds themselves evolving from a welcoming place for outsiders to something far more sinister.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is known for crafting powerful dramas such as Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving, The Bikeriders stars a stellar ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer (28 Years Later), Austin Butler, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). The Bikeriders is available to stream on Prime Video from December 10, and it’s well worth a ride.

Image
The 2012 movie Zero Dark Thirty is a gripping political thriller that was highly successful at the box office and was nominated for and won several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing and a Best Actress Golden Globe for Chastain's performance. 'Lake George' Review | Coon & Whigham Are a Perfect Odd Couple
Image
One look at busy actress Carrie Coon, and many of us go, "Oh, I adore her!" One look at Shea Whigham and we add, "Wow. Love that guy." They're faces you recognize, even if their names don't immediately conjure their credits, but they're two of the best actors today. Coon is the brilliant force from The Leftovers and the upcoming Season 3 of The White Lotus, and Whigham is consistently great in classics like Take Shelter and Boardwalk Empire. The actors were actually paired for a bit in the Emmy-winning third season of FX's Fargo as good-natured police officers. Well, writer-director Jeffrey Reiner's delicious new noir comedy-thriller Lake George changes that nature a bit and brings them together in a glorious pairing.

Like Fargo, the new film offers plenty of dryly comedic moments within its tense narrative, and sees the two celebrated stars own their roles of small-time crooks...

Jeff Nichols at an event for Mud (2012)
Jeff Nichols | Original film in the works following Cormac McCarthy adaptations
Jeff Nichols at an event for Mud (2012)
Jeff Nichols is working on a Cormac McCarthy adaptation or two – but then has a new original film he’s also lining up.

When you have two wholly original films on your resume like Mud and Take Shelter, it’s a wonder that you’d ever consider adapting the work of others, yet that’s what Jeff Nichols has been doing for the last few years.

It’s understandable of course: Nichols has been inspired by some incredible works, having produced 2016’s Loving along with The Bikeriders earlier this year. Both films were adaptations of a sort, with the former being based on Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary and the latter adapting Danny Lyon’s book of photographs.

Nichols has had other projects on the go in the last few years that have also been adaptation, even if they haven’t come to fruition. There was a fresh take on Alien Nation...

Jeff Nichols lines up original film ahead of two Cormac McCarthy adaptations
Image
Jeff Nichols has big plans for his future, as he has announced that in addition to his planned Cormac McCarthy adaptations, he will be penning his first original feature since 2016’s Midnight Special.

Jeff Nichols got his start as one of the most distinct auteurs to emerge in the mid-2000s, writing and directing Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, and the aforementioned Midnight Special. His two most recent features, Loving and this year’s The Bikeriders, both had their roots in true stories, with the latter being adapted from a photo book. On the mixture of projects, Nichols told Deadline, “I’ve been making period pieces and films inspired by other people’s work and this next film for better or worse is going to be cut from Jeff Nichols cloth.”

In addition to these, Jeff Nichols will also go back to adapting, as he will take on Cormac McCarthy’s two Passenger books,...

Jeff Nichols’ Favorite Part of Making ‘The Bikeriders’: Watching Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer Go Head-to-Head
Image
It’s a measure of how long Jeff Nichols has been thinking about making a movie about the 1960s heyday of Midwest motorcycle gangs that at one point his close friend and frequent star Michael Shannon said to him, “Stop talking about this movie. You’re never gonna make it.”

Shannon was wrong: Almost 20 years after he became intrigued by a book about one such gang, Nichols finally made “The Bikeriders” with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. It was made in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and premiered to rave reviews at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival.

But what should have been the triumphant culmination of his two-decade quest was bittersweet at best. In the wake of the writers and actors strikes, 20th Century Studios pulled the film off its release schedule and eventually sold it to Focus Features, which finally released it to modest box-office returns in...

Image
U.S. director Jeff Nichols has been named as the 2024 patron of the Marrakech International Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops, as the talent and project incubator also unveils the projects selected for this year’s edition.

Launched in 2018, the initiative has supported a raft of emerging and more established filmmakers and their projects, hailing from Morocco, the Arab world, and Africa.

Nichols – whose filmography includes 2011 Cannes Critics’ Week winner Take Shelter, Cannes Palme d’Or contenders Mud (2012) and Loving (2016) as well as more recent credit The Bikeriders – is the second announced patron.

The role was created last year, with Martin Scorsese due to kick off the inaugural patronship, but he was forced to cancel his Marrakech trip for personal reasons at the eleventh hour.

Nichols will take part in a number of sessions with selected projects in development and post-production. This year’s cohort of filmmakers will be known as the Class of Jeff Nichols.

Never Let Go
Image
The mental-health horror trend that’s been growing in recent years may be one of the most interesting, terrifying sub-genres around: if the real monsters are in your head, how can you protect your loved ones from them? The Babadook or Take Shelter mined such an idea for nearly unbearable tension; the latest from Alexandre Aja almost pulls off the same trick. Are we watching a tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic nightmare world, or two isolated children struggling with a mother they can’t trust?

Halle Berry plays Momma, a tough-as-nails survivor who’s holed up in a remote cabin in the woods with her twin sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV). The boys nearly worship her, but her insistence that they must always remain physically tied with rope to their house is becoming restrictive as the boys get older, and her insistence on protective rhymes and rules seems eccentric.

Unconventional thrillers that shake up the genre can have audiences on the edge of their seats, unsure of how things will play out in the end. While many tropes and cliches in the thriller genre mean observant viewers will be quick to uncover the mystery and decipher how things will pan out before the credits roll, some actors, directors, and writers have toyed with these conventions to produce some truly unconventional movies. Jeff Nichols’ ‘The Bikeriders’ Sets Peacock Premiere Date
Image
Peacock announced on Wednesday that the motorcycle crime thriller The Bikeriders, starring Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Academy Award nominee Austin Butler (Elvis) and Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy (The Revenant), will begin streaming exclusively on the service on August 9.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, the filmmaker behind titles like Mud and Take Shelter, The Bikeriders is a fictional story inspired by the photography of Danny Lyon and his 1967 book The Bikeriders.

The film captures a rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals, led by the enigmatic Johnny (Hardy). Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose...

The Bikeriders drives into digital on-demand tomorrow
Image
After movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa made their home debuts mere weeks after their theatrical premieres, Jeff Nichols’ period drama The Bikeriders joins the pack as it revs up to hit digital outlets tomorrow. The film garnered much praise from critics, including our own Chris Bumbray, who said in his review, “This is the rare film where I almost hope there’s a more extended version, as I found some of the side characters fascinating and worth further development. […] It’s rare I look at my watch during a movie hoping there’s more or it left, but that’s what happened to me here quite a bit, so take that as high praise.”

The press release from Universal reads,

“Loyalty, power, and brotherhood collide in Focus Features’ ‘must-see summer movie’ (USA Today) that critics are calling ‘Goodfellas on Harley-Davidsons’ (Indiewire). The Bikeriders is available for the first...

How Jodie Comer Mastered Her Chicago Accent for ‘The Bikeriders’
Image
It’s well-proven that Emmy winner Jodie Comer excels at accent work.

The actor’s Russian accent as psychopathic assassin Villanelle in “Killing Eve” was so good that playwright Suzie Miller nearly passed on her to star in “Prima Facie” because the play was written for someone from Liverpool.. Now, in Jeff Nichols’ latest film, “The Bikeriders,” about the rise and fall of a Midwestern motorcycle club in the 1960s, she puts on a working-class Chicago accent to play Kathy, a strong-willed woman who falls for a free-spirited biker named Benny (Austin Butler) and finds herself competing with Johnny (Tom Hardy), the club’s leader, for his attention and devotion.

The Searchlight movie is inspired by the 1967 photography book “The Bikeriders” by Danny Lyon, who captured the story of the Vandals motorcycle club. He’d recorded interviews with members of the club too, so Comer had about 30 minutes of the...

Jeff Nichols Confirms Why He Left A Quiet Place: Day One
Image
Creative differences led to Jeff Nichols unexpectedly leaving A Quiet Place: Day One project despite being hired as writer/director. Paramount Pictures started fresh with Michael Sarnoski as the new director after Nichols' departure from the prequel movie. A Quiet Place: Day One is a highly anticipated film exploring the origins of the alien invasion with a talented cast including Lupita Nyong'o.

Jeff Nichols, the original director of A Quiet Place: Day One, has revealed what made him leave the project after he had been hired as a writer and director by John Krasinski himself. Unfortunately, due to creative differences, he unexpectedly left the project. After his departure, Paramount Pictures decided to scrap everything and start from zero with writer/director Michael Sarnoski, the director responsible for Nicolas Cage's 2021 thriller Pig.

A Quiet Place: Day One, which will be released in theaters next month, is a prequel to Krasinski's...

The Bikeriders Director Says One Star 'Wasn't Allowed' Near a Motorcycle
Image
Jeff Nichols' new film The Bikeriders features many thrilling sequences of motorcycle mayhem, but the director recently revealed which actor was not allowed to go near one.

The Bikeriders is set in the 1960s, based on Danny Lyon's photobook of the same name, and follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club called the Vandals. The film boasts an incredible cast that includes Jodie Comer (Free Guy), Austin Butler (Elvis), Tom Hardy (Venom), Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Mike Faist (Challengers), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). According to Deadline, Nichols gave an interview on the ReelBlend podcast discussing many facets of the film, including the actors needing to learn how to drive the motorcycles. "To be honest, all of them had to go through training. Now, some guys took to it better than others," Nichols said. However, there was a notable exception when it came...

Mike Faist Explains How Zendaya’s Cameras Led Him to ‘The Bikeriders’
Image
Mike Faist was planning to take a prolonged breather after an exhausting shoot on Challengers, but those intentions fell by the wayside once Jeff Nichols called about The Bikeriders.

The Take Shelter and Mud filmmaker made Faist an offer that was simply too tempting to pass up. He’d not only get to work a couple hours from where he was born in Gahanna, Ohio, but he’d also get to play highly regarded photographer Danny Lyon while observing and documenting several of his favorite actors. The clincher was that Faist’s Challengers co-star Zendaya had already pointed him in this direction thanks to her habit of photographing film sets and picking the brains of directors and DPs.

“Toward the tail end of Challengers, Zendaya got me into photography. She had her cameras on set and was always playing around with them and whatnot. So I got interested and played...

'The Bikeriders' Was Based on This Wild Real-Life Motorcycle Club
Image
Ever since his breakthrough feature Shotgun Stories, Jeff Nichols has been a filmmaker interested in authentic depictions of the human condition. Whether it's the brutal coming-of-age story of Mud, the intimate historical romance of Loving, the subversive superhero mythology of Midnight Special, or the disaster themes of Take Shelter, Nichols is able to take extraordinary premises and ground them in legitimate emotional stakes. Nichols latest feature, The Bikeriders, is a rip-roaring throwback to classic fight the system films like Easy Rider and Rebel Without a Cause, focusing on a defiant motorcycle group in the 1960s. Although it's a film that shows the extent of Nichols imagination, The Bikeriders was loosely inspired by real accounts of the 1960s.

Movie Review: The Bikeriders
Image
The latest film from writer/director Jeff Nichols, the superlative narrative adaptation of a book of photos by photographer Danny Lyon titled The Bikeriders, proves to be one of the modern equivalent of iconic films such as The Wild One (1953) or Easy Rider (1969).

The film is told from the point of view of Kathy (Jodie Comer) via an ongoing interview conducted by a photo-journalist named Danny (Mike Faist) – upon whose book the film is based. Kathy’s story begins with her meeting Benny (Austin Butler) when he, and the rest of his motorcycle “club,” stop by her local bar for a drink. Immediately taken with Danny, Kathy joins him, and the club – known as the Vandals – on their quest for independence and freedom. The leader of the Vandals, Johnny (Tom Hardy), looks upon Danny as his successor. But, as the club evolves around them – much like the culture of the...

Youre Making Me Blush Why Austin Butler Is More Than a Beautiful Bikerider
Image
Oscar-nominee Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two) and Emmy-winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) are killing it in Hollywood, and neither seems able to ease off the throttle. Together, they lead writer-director Jeff Nichols' latest period piece, The Bikeriders, alongside Tom Hardy (Venom), in a gritty look back at the turmoil of 1960s America. The trio is joined by The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus, Boyd Holbrook (Justified: City Primeval), Mike Faist (Challengers), and, of course, Michael Shannon (Take Shelter).

‘Lake George’ Review: Shea Whigham and Carrie Coon in a Conventional Neo-Noir With a Few Welcome Twists
Image
A nifty little neo-noir carried by two likeable leads, Lake George follows a pair of down-and-out, middle-aged criminals who try to rip off a rich gangster and somehow get away with it.

Is that a familiar premise? Yes. Do stars Shea Whigham and Carrie Coon manage to make the material feel both fresh and engaging? Yes. Is there still a theatrical audience out there for this kind of modest, well-acted and slickly crafted B-level thriller? That remains to be seen.

Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, veteran director Jeffrey Reiner’s latest feature offers up a few welcome twists on a typical noir scenario: Ex-con Don (Whigham) gets out of jail and tries to collect the money he’s owed by an L.A. thug, Armen (Glenn Fleshler), who lives in a massive McMansion up in the Hollywood Hills. But Don is no tough guy, and he winds up getting...

Jodie Comer to lead Kenneth Branagh’s next directorial effort, The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde
Image
Jodie Comer is heading toward disturbing events after signing on to her latest film project with Kenneth Branagh, The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. Branagh wrote and will direct the new film. Plot details are scarce, but Deadline’s exclusive report says The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is a contemporary psychological thriller, with production kicking off in August in the UK.

Belfast producers Tamar Thomas, Laura Berwick, Becca Kovacik, Matthew Jenkins, Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau will join Branagh for the new film.

As Deadline points out, Comer’s signing onto the project is a significant boon for Branagh’s latest yarn. She’s an extraordinarily busy actress, so something about Branagh’s project must have caught her attention. After wrapping Killing Eve, Comer joined the cast of the Jeff Nichols crime drama The Bikeriders. Comer plays Kathy in the upcoming film, which also stars Austin Butler,...

The True Story Behind The Bikeriders, Explained
Image
The Bikeriders delves into the rise of a Midwest biker gang, detailing the dangerous allure of a rebellious lifestyle. Director Jeff Nichols drew inspiration from Danny Lyon's photographic exploration of real-life bikers in the 1960s. Although based on Lyon's work, the film adds a unique twist by creating its own characters and storyline.

Jeff Nichol's The Bikeriders aims to capture a realistic portrait of criminally driven motorcycle clubs, the complex mix of the allure of a rebellious lifestyle and the disdain for the violent and illegal actions that fuel their lifestyle. To do this, Nichols, who wrote and directed the film, took inspiration from a famous photography book that chronicled the lives of real-life bikers in the 1960s: Danny Lyon's 1968 book The Bikeriders.

We will look at Danny Lyon's legacy, how his work inspired the ensemble crime thriller, and how much of the movie is based on...

Jeff Nichols at an event for Mud (2012)
Jeff Nichols looking to adapt Cormac McCarthy’s The Passenger
Jeff Nichols at an event for Mud (2012)
Jeff Nichols is reportedly looking to adapt Cormac McCarthy’s final two novels for what may be his follow-up project to The Bikeriders.

Cormac McCarthy was a legendary American writer and his works have led to a number of films that have varied in quality. From out and out brilliance, such as The Road or No Country For Old Men to projects that deserve a second look such as Ridley Scott’s The Counselor (for which McCarthy penned the script), there’s always something to admire about the writer’s work.

One filmmaker who seems particularly engaged with McCarthy’s work is Jeff Nichols. Nichols has his first film in seven years due out soon, The Bikeriders. That film is a period drama which boasts an impressive ensemble cast that saw its release delayed due to last year’s strikes meaning that said cast couldn’t promote it.

Nichols completed...
