Warhammer Fans Brand Thrilling New Trailer ‘Pacific Rim 3’
Image
Games Workshop just dropped a bombshell that’s got the Warhammer community seeing double. The latest animation trailer for “Kill Lupercal” features colossal war machines duking it out amid apocalyptic destruction—and fans can’t help but notice it looks suspiciously like the Pacific Rim sequel they’ve been begging for.

Set during the Siege of Terra, this new Warhammer 40K animation follows a Warlord Titan crew on what might be their final mission: a desperate attempt to end the Horus Heresy with one decisive strike against the Warmaster himself.

When titans clash: Jaegers in disguise?

The parallels between Warhammer 40K‘s Titans and Guillermo del Toro‘s Jaegers aren’t just fan imagination running wild.

Both feature massive humanoid war machines piloted by neural-linked crews, battling for humanity’s survival against overwhelming odds. The trailer’s apocalyptic scale and grim determination mirror Pacific Rim‘s tone so perfectly that...

You Can Now Watch Guillermo del Toro’s Favorite Horror Movie for Free That He Directed Himself
Image
Guillermo Del Toro has a very storied career in Hollywood, delivering some of the most seminal entries in a slew of mediums and genres that have come to define modern filmmaking. Whether it be comic book adaptations like Hellboy, kaiju films like Pacific Rim, or dark fantasy films like Pan’s Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro has a slew of films that are must-watches for genre and film enthusiasts.

However, there is one film that del Toro counts among his most preferred movies from his filmography, which is The Devil’s Backbone, which holds s special place in his heart, despite directors and artists saying that it is impossible to choose from their works.

“I end up deferring my salary”: Guillermo del Toro Sacrificed His Salary and Stood His Ground in Movies Like Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak
Image
Few directors have a passion for filmmaking as strong as Guillermo del Toro. While most look at it as a profession and a means to an end, one only needs to look at his works to understand how much he adores movies. The passion and magnificence present in his films make them stand out in ways very few can.

While directors like Quentin Tarantino have a similar passion, the style that del Toro has created for himself makes him stand out. When one is this fervent about something, boundaries do not seem to matter, and they will go above and beyond to make sure that their vision is fulfilled.

It would seem that not only has del Toro pushed to make things happen in his films, but he has also sacrificed his salary.

What is Guillermo del Toro’s definition of art?

A simple glance at Guillermo del Toro’s...

The Celebrated Film Guillermo del Toro Calls “A genre supernova” Is Now Free-To-Stream
Image
Who doesn’t love John Carpenter’s Halloween? It’s one of the greatest horror films of all time. We have Halloween to thank for the slasher boom of the ‘80s. The flick was a resounding success that resonated with critics and fans in equal measure. Not to mention, it also inspired future generations of filmmakers. Speaking of filmmakers upon whom the film imprinted in a meaningful way, Guillermo del Toro counts himself a massive fan of this beloved feature.

The Pacific Rim director once took to Twitter (I still refuse to call it X) to proclaim his undying appreciation for the flick. His tweet reads: “Halloween by John Carpenter. A genre supernova. Creates a taxonomic category that still lives. Unsparing precision, simplicity and elegance.”

Mr. del Toro said it far better than I could. Halloween is a benchmark of genre filmmaking to which all subsequent slashers will be compared,...

Pacific Rim Writer’s Original Plan Was a Prequel About “The first Jaegar’s first fight with the Kaiju”
Image
A lot of people were disappointed with the horrible sequel to Pacific Rim. While Uprising failed, there were a slew of ideas from the original creative team that could have made for a prequel that could have been a box office juggernaut in recent years.

If only we had Guillermo del Toro and his team had gotten their way, we could have had another mecha monster hit to enjoy in theaters. However, the original writer of the film, Travis Beacham, had a fantastic idea for a prequel, despite not being very keen on them as a concept.

Pacific Rim || Credit: Legendary

If this film were developed by the production company, it would have delved deep into the history of the post-apocalyptic world created by Guillermo del Toro. The prequel film would have looked into how the tradition of giant monsters being punched by giant robots became humanity’s favorite pastime.

'Pacific Rim' Sequel Went Sideways After Charlie Hunnam Dropped Out, Director Reveals
Image
The director behind the middling sequel to one of the best monster movies ever made, Pacific Rim: Uprising, has now revealed why the follow-up failed to live up to its predecessor. Filmmaker Steven S. DeKnight, who is also known for the Netflix Daredevil series, took to social media to respond to a fan who asked, “I am curious though, what made you do that sequel and where did it all go wrong?” And his answer teases the kaiju action movie masterpiece that could have been...

While the first Pacific Rim was directed by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro, DeKnight took over the franchise for the sequel, making his feature-film directorial and writing debut. Pacific Rim centered on Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket, a former Jaeger (giant robot) pilot who is brought back into the action to once again do battle with the legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju that arose from the sea.

Hideaki Anno’s ‘Evangelion’ Inspired One of the Greatest Movies of 2013 by an Oscar Winning Director
Image
Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno set the stage for future works in a similar direction, having a vastly complex setting, extremely realistic characters, and, well, mechas. Neon Genesis Evangelion came out in 1995 and has since become a favored classic that has garnered a massive fan following.

When Pacific Rim debuted in 2013, many praised its grandiosity and monster‑slaying spectacle. It had an extremely unique premise that had never been seen in a Hollywood movie before.

It was exciting, novel, and incredibly spectacular. But the anime fans quickly spotted the similarities, Pacific Rim had borrowed heavily from Neon Genesis Evangelion. So, to what extent did Neon Genesis Evangelion inspire the Oscar-winning movie? What connects and distinguishes them?

Pacific Rim’s Jaegers and Evangelion’s Evas

Pacific Rim was undoubtedly a wonderful movie, but its most profound homage lies in how both it and Neon Genesis Evangelion transform giant robots into living extensions of their pilots.

Guillermo del Toro Isn’t Interested in Superhero Movies But I’ll Forever Regret If He Never Directs 1 X-Men Movie He Was Born For
Image
Guillermo del Toro is one of the finest filmmakers of his generation, having first garnered critical acclaim for his indie horror movies. He later gained commercial success and also won an Academy Award, establishing himself as a bankable director. However, del Toro has recently stepped away from blockbuster filmmaking.

Despite his recent change of plans, del Toro needs to direct one X-Men movie that is right up his alley. After several failed attempts, del Toro seems to be no longer interested in superhero movies. However, one X-Men character is simply too perfect for del Toro’s storytelling sensibilities. Here is why del Toro was born to direct a movie based on this Marvel character.

30 Lowest Rated Movies on IMDb
Image
All the new movies coming out in recent years are aiming to be critically praised, but some films defy the odds—they don’t really care about IMDb scores but rather serve as a source for people to have fun. Think about it—how many times have you watched a movie, had a blast, and then checked the IMDb score only to find a mediocre number?

Many films out there get roasted by critics but still manage to rack up millions. And sometimes, who doesn’t love over-the-top, CGI-packed movies—types of films that make you roll on the floor laughing? There are many films starring actors like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell that somehow manage to rank low on IMDb, yet grip the audience from start to end.

So, this list will not be about movies that are bad in any way; it’s about the ones that, despite all their flaws,...

“You cannot be postmodern about these”: Guillermo Del Toro’s 11-Year-Old Vampire Story Is Proof Why George R.R. Martin Wants Him Next
Image
Guillermo del Toro may have won his previous Oscar for Pinocchio, but the filmmaker has always been attracted to monsters, vampires, ghosts, and the like. The Pan’s Labyrinth director has long been known for his love for the genre and his various works, making him a sort of King of the Macabre.

He has dealt with ghosts, sea monsters, kaijus, Hellboy, and will be working on Frankenstein next. He has also worked with vampires on the FX series The Strain, which is based on a series of novels he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. Del Toro’s commitment to staying true to the lore of vampires is what made George R.R. Martin approach him for his own vampire story.

Pacific Rim Live-Action Prequel Series Officially Moving Forward At Prime Video With Shadow & Bone Showrunner
Image
We first heard about plans for a live-action Pacific Rim series last year, and we now have confirmation that the project is moving forward at Amazon Prime Video.

Variety reports that the show is being developed as part of a deal between lead studio Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Eric Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer under his Chronology banner.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but we do know that the untitled series will serve as a prequel to the movies. Apparently, "there is still the potential for new films in the franchise as well."

The Pacific Rim franchise launched back in 2013 with Guillermo del Toro's original movie, which was followed in 2018 by Steve S. DeKnight's Pacific Rim: Uprising. Since then, we've had the Pacific Rim: The Black animated series, as well as various comic books, novels, video games and other tie-in merchandise.

'Pacific Rim' Prequel Series Set for Prime Video From Amazon MGM and Legendary
Image
It's been a long time since fans of Pacific Rim were treated to some live-action Kaiju mayhem, but all that could be changing soon thanks to Amazon. The prequel series that was announced last year to be in development by Legendary Television has officially landed at Amazon MGM Studios, and together, the two behemoths will adapt the project for Prime Video. Pacific Rim is, of course, the 2013 Guillermo del Toro classic that saw humanity fighting off a barrage of Kaiju with the help of gigantic humanoid mechas known as Jaegers.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Pacific Rim prequel series is helmed by Eric Heisserer through his Chronology banner as part of his overall first-look TV deal with Legendary. Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer on the series, as he's certainly no stranger to the small screen. He most recently was the writer, showrunner, and EP for Netflix's Shadow and Bone series,...

The Pacific Rim franchise is gearing up to be back on screens, but it will be a TV saga this time. Well, that does not change the fact that the interdimensional world will be any less action-packed. Amazon MGM Studios is leading the ship with Legendary Entertainment at its helm, making it a potential project that could shine in the big leagues.

The upcoming TV series is set to be a prequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi movie Pacific Rim. The acclaimed writer Eric Heisserer, who will write and executive produce the show, promises to deliver an engaging origin story. With the backing of Legendary Entertainment, the studio that produced the original movies, this series aims to broaden the Pacific Rim franchise in exciting and innovative ways.

‘Pacific Rim’ Series Lands at Amazon
Pacific Rim (2013)
Legendary’s Pacific Rim series has landed at Amazon MGM Studios. The two studios will adapt the IP together (with Legendary in first position) for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service.

The Pacific Rim TV project, currently in development, is the first from Legendary’s first-look television deal with Eric Heisserer and his Chronology banner. Heisserer will write and executive produce the series.

The Pacific Rim universe first launched in 2013 with the Guillermo del Toro-directed feature film of the same name. The title has since expanded into animated television (Pacific Rim: The Black), comic books, novels, gaming and toys. In 2018, Steve S. DeKnight wrote and directed a second feature film in the franchise: Pacific Rim: Uprising.

The original Pacific Rim starred Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. Together, they fought an ongoing war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures. Victory was not enough, we guess,...

'Pacific Rim' TV Series Will Officially Cancel the Apocalypse on Prime Video
Image
Prime Video is drift-compatible with Pacific Rim. A TV spinoff of Guillermo del Toro's 2013 mecha vs. monsters magnum opus is coming to the streaming service. Variety reports that Eric Heisserer is writing and executive producing the series.

Heisserer is an Academy Award nominee for his Arrivalscript; recently, he wrote and showran Netflix's Shadow and Bone. His Pacific Rim series is to be a prequel to the 2013 film, which previously received a 2018 sequel and a 2021 Netflix animated series. The new series will be live-action, but it does not rule out any future theatrical films in the franchise, which have lingered in development hell since 2018's Pacific Rim: Uprising disappointed at the box office. There is no word yet on whether any of the film's characters or cast members will return, or if the ever-busy del Toro will have any involvement with the series.

Kaiju No 8: Mission Recon review – the fury and rawness of battle as monsters keep coming
Pacific Rim (2013)
A high school-style training academy is the setting for Tomomi Kamiya and Shigeyuki Miya’s punky anime tale of a volunteer army’s battle against the Godzilla-like kaiju

Kaiju, as Japanophiles will know, are Godzilla-style giant monsters that double up as A-bomb and/or natural disaster metaphors, and Naoya Matsumoto’s YA spin is a smart addition to the outsized genre. This film is an omnibus recap of the 2024 TV anime’s first season, directed by Tomomi Kamiya and Shigeyuki Miya, and tacking on a new 20-minute episode. Taking place in a high-school-style training academy for anti-kaiju troops, it plays like Pacific Rim meets Starship Troopers meets The Incredible Hulk.

Kafka (voiced by Masaya Fukunishi) wants to join the Defense Force like his childhood buddy Mina (Asami Seto), who has become the kaiju-reaping star of the outfit. But having flunked the entrance exam, he is stuck as part of the...

The ‘It’s Always Sunny’ Episode No One Remembers Guillermo del Toro Starred In
Image
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the most beloved sitcoms. It stars Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, and Kaitlin Olson alongside Rob McElhenney and Glen Howerton. The show follows a group of friends who are often described as ‘narcissistic and sociopathic‘ and run an Irish dive bar. Staying true to their nature, narcissists spend most of their free time scheming and plotting against others.

The audience praised the sitcom for its dark humor and cast performances. They have also appreciated that the sitcom’s plot is a satire on everything wrong with society. Over the years, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has amassed a large cult following. It’s the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time. But the sitcom went on to feature a filmmaker in an unrecognizable cameo.

Universal Pictures has unveiled the full official trailer for the highly anticipated sequel ‘M3gan 2.0.’

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defence contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.

With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN and give her a few upgrades,...

Everyone’s favourite killer doll is back in the M3GAN 2.0 trailer, this time with added Britney Spears. Take a look.

M3GAN, director Gerard Johnstone’s horror thriller about an AI doll going haywire and doing a bit of dancing before killing a bunch of humans, turned out to be a major success for Universal Pictures in 2021. Audiences simply couldn’t get enough of M3GAN, so naturally, she had to come back for more mayhem.

M3GAN 2.0 is bigger and more outrageous, at least based on the trailer, which you can watch below.

M3GAN is getting some upgrades in the new film as she goes head to head with another advanced android. The trailer is appropriately set to Britney Spears’ ‘Oops, I Did It Again’ and we have no doubt M3GAN will still be up to no good when it comes to protecting Cady.

Madame Web Star Sydney Sweeney Set To Play The Lead In Legendary's Live-Action Gundam Movie

We first learned that a live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie was in development way back in 2018 during the Anime Expo, and in 2021, we finally got an update when it was announced that Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) would direct the project for Netflix.

Vogt-Roberts would later ways with the movie, and Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle was brought on to replace him. It's been pretty quiet on the Gundam front since, but we now have confirmation (Jeff Sneider first reported the news) that Sydney Sweeney is in final talks to play the lead role.

Plot and character details are currently under wraps.

A Mexican Wrestler Fighting Vampire Politicians: Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Silver’ Is as Crazy as It Sounds and I Need It Now
Image
Guillermo del Toro has delivered several critically and commercially successful movies in his expansive career. However, del Toro is known for having a slew of scrapped projects that never made it to production.

One of the filmmaker’s best ideas was Silver, a story he had cooked up very early in his career, yet it languished in development hell. According to sources and del Toro himself, the film would’ve been shot in Mexico.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Credits: CBS News).

Furthermore, the story would’ve revolved around a Mexican wrestler taking on politicians who are vampires. With del Toro’s ability to extract emotion from the most absurd concepts and inhuman characters, the proposed film sounds like an absolute treat and I need him to work on it asap.

“The idea of the movie is just for us to trust each other”: Guillermo del Toro Included One Plot Element in Pacific Rim Solely Because Most Actions Movies Didn’t
Image
Guillermo del Toro isn’t one to follow the usual Hollywood playbook, and Pacific Rim proves it. While most action movies lean heavily on lone-wolf heroes, del Toro flipped the script by making trust the film’s core theme. The concept of drift compatibility, where two pilots must sync their minds to control a Jaeger, wasn’t just a cool sci-fi idea.

It was del Toro’s way of emphasizing teamwork, something he felt was sorely lacking in the genre. By forcing characters to rely on each other, Pacific Rim stood apart from the typical action spectacle, proving that giant robots and heart actually go hand in hand.

“I’m going to write Ron a charlatan like that someday”: Not Hellboy, Another $411M Guillermo del Toro Movie Always Planned to Cast Ron Perlman in Iconic Role

But amidst its brilliant cast, it’s Ron Perlman, who ends up stealing every scene he is in as Hannibal Chau.

As for his casting in the acclaimed sci-fi epic, Del Toro specifically wrote Hannibal Chau for his former collaborator Perlman, who had a blast playing the role.

Although a $180M monster-versus-robot spectacle seems more in line with a studio-driven movie, Pacific Rim was as heartfelt for Guillermo del Toro as his other cinematic ventures, who confessed, “They’re all for me.” This also served as a reunion between the...

Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ Did ‘Dei’ Better Than Disney, Just Don’t Tell Elon Musk: ‘It was humanistically designed to not be about a single race’
Image
In the last few years, Hollywood has taken diversity a lot more seriously, almost to the point of its whole purpose being questioned. Similarly, Elon Musk ranted out against the idea of Dei hiring, which emphasizes a candidate’s background as a basis for hiring. However, almost a decade ago filmmaker Guillermo del Toro nailed the idea of Dei in one of his movies.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Credits: CBS News).

Despite being known for his horror movies, del Toro directed the 2013 sci-fi monster film Pacific Rim. The film received positive reviews and emerged as a box office hit, thanks in large part to del Toro’s treatment of its characters who come from diverse racial backgrounds. Here is how del Toro nailed diversity long before it was a political tool in Hollywood and beyond.

Charlie Hunnam Starred in This Forgotten Comedy Series Before Sons of Anarchy

0Charlie Hunnam is an English actor best known for Sons of Anarchy, playing the complex and broken Jax Teller. Before Hunnam donned his leather Samcro vest, he first gained recognition as the title character in Douglas McGrath's Nicholas Nickelby, based on the Charles Dickens novel of the same name. Hunnam starred in several other notable projects, like Pacific Rim and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Back in 2001—before his dramatic work—Charlie Hunnam had a regular role in the Judd Apatow comedy series Undeclared. Undeclared followed a group of college first-year students living in the same dorm at a fictional college in Northern California. A fresh-faced, twenty-one-year-old Charlie Hunnam played Lloyd, a theater student and ladies' man.

“I was annoyed”: ‘Gundam’ Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino Hates What Madhouse Has Done to ‘Orb: On the Movements of the Earth’
Image
As a groundbreaking series, Gundam completely shaped the course of the mecha genre for decades. Yoshiyuki Tomino brilliantly portrayed war, humanity and society through the characters and received acclaim for his work. He praised his contemporaries for their offbeat work, but there are exceptions.

Recently, Tomino seemed rather disappointed with a modern anime which made waves on the Internet. Orb, in particular, didn’t seem to pique his interest and he gave his reasons as well. But that won’t dim the series’ significance in splendidly portraying the age-old science versus religion debate.

Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino’s thoughts on Orb anime

The 70s and 80s were some pivotal years for the anime industry. This is true for Gundam and other series that paved the way for cyberpunk and mecha genre. These were a trailblazer in the manner with which they questioned the societal conventions.

After Abandoning Gundam-Inspired Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro Can Revive 1 Extremely Underrated Mecha Anime as a Live-Action Trilogy
Image
What Guillermo del Toro has done with Pacific Rim has made him a curious figure for anime fans. Every time an anime series too bizarre starts gaining traction and the live-action conversations are sparked, fans start wondering if del Toro would be up for the task. There’s one anime franchise that’s painfully underrated for how good it is.

It’s the Patlabor franchise that could compete with the best from the mecha world. There couldn’t be a better way to describe the Patlabor franchise than calling it a hidden gem. From the quality of the visuals to the myriad number of themes, the Patlabor anime and movies are a must-watch for fans who love exploring the older titles.

Guillermo del Toro is one of the most celebrated movie directors, who still does not get enough credit for his unique vision. But apart from being a great director, del Toro has impeccable taste because he is also a well-known appreciator of Japanese pop culture.

So it is only natural that he will also recommend something of quality to his friends as well. Thankfully, he did just that for another great director, and this is how James Cameron came across the manga of Battle Angel Alita or Gunm by Yukito Kishiro.

Needless to say, del Toro went on to help Cameron with its adaptation, bringing the masterpiece of a manga to a wider audience. Thus, it is not an exaggeration to claim that Guillermo del Toro is indeed a God of cinema, and he proves it through his impeccable filmography.

Every Cailee Spaeny Movie and TV Show, Ranked
Image
This article contains a brief mention of abuse.

From action films like Pacific Rim Uprising to subtle dramas like Priscilla, Cailee Spaeny continues to experiment with a variety of challenging roles. In her latest movie,Alien: Romulus, the actress has showcased her potential to lead an iconic franchise. One of the most engaging aspects of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus is the young cast. It evolves the franchise for modern viewers while showing nostalgics that different narratives can be told. In this case, it's a group of young scavengers who run into Xenomorphs rather than seasoned soldiers and experienced scientists.

This approach speaks to the wonder and inquisitive nature of youth. At the core of Romulus is Cailee Spaeny's Rain, who just wants a fresh start. As expected, Spaeny delivers range and impressive nods to Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. She's certainly a character that sequels can be built around.

'Impact Winter' Series Set at Netflix With 'I Am Legend' Director Francis Lawrence
Image
One of the best ways to make a TV show in this day and age is to have some existing IP to build it on. The podcast series was written by Travis Beacham, who co-wrote Pacific Rim and Clash of the Titans.

Deadline reports that Lawrence is attached to a series adaptation of Impact Winter, the hit Audible podcast that also spawned a comic-book series. Why Charlie Day’s Happy Madison Movie Never Happened
Image
In addition to his decades of TV work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Charlie Day has had a pretty solid movie career. He got to help fight giant monsters in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, plotted the murder of Jennifer Aniston in Horrible Bosses and voiced Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

He also did something in Louis C.K.’s creepy movie that we’re not totally sure about because it was never released and all existing copies were buried in New Mexico next to all the E.T. Atari games, we assume.

Day also came close to starring in a promising buddy comedy, produced by Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison, along with Andy Samberg. Until one fateful table read, that is.

On the most recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, Samberg and his co-hosts fielded a voicemail question from Steve Agee, who...

“I wanted to make a movie where he is guilty”: Guillermo del Toro Quietly Changed a Gothic Tradition in His Underrated Movie That You Missed
Image
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for his gothic horror movies, having defined the genre for over two decades. After starting with indie films, del Toro eventually won an Oscar for his work while delivering commercial hits. However, one entry in del Toro’s filmography remains extremely underrated, especially for being genre-defying.

Suicide Squad: Only Reason That Can Explain Why James Gunn Didn’t Give Idris Elba a Bloodsport Series Like John Cena’s Peacemaker
Image
2016’s Suicide Squad was an unmitigated disaster on most fronts, completely demolishing the IP’s perception among the general audience. Furthermore, the first movie’s reputation, followed by the Covid-19 pandemic and Max’s same-day release policy, ended up contributing to The Suicide Squad‘s underwhelming box office numbers.

Fortunately for James Gunn, the critical reception proved to be quite positive, and given Gunn’s reputation as a Cbm director, Warner Bros. rolled the ball on the spin-off, which surprisingly didn’t involve Idris Elba.

One of the biggest highlights of The Suicide Squad was Idris Elba‘s Bloodsport, a huge improvement over his Suicide Squad counterpart, Deadshot, played by Will Smith. As a result, most fans felt a spin-off about Bloodsport was likely. But to fans’ surprise,...

Mary Parent Knows How to Produce Big, Artful Movies Like Oscar Contender ‘Dune: Part Two’
Image
Mary Parent has seen it all. Since her youthful days hanging with current Warner Bros. co-chairs Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy at New Line Cinema, she has worked her way up the ranks at Universal Pictures, where she and Scott Stuber ran the movie division, to her own production shingle, Disruption Entertainment, which currently co-produces with Legendary Entertainment. Among many other things, Parent produced Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” series, A.G. Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning “The Revenant,” and the Monsterverse movies including blockbuster “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($572 million worldwide).

But the films consuming most of her attention over the past few years are Denis Villeneuve’s ongoing “Dune” trilogy (Warner Bros./Legendary). She oversees all the films at Legendary, but on some projects like “Dune,” which she sold to Legendary three years before she joined the company, she’s an on-the- ground producer.

“They both create enormous universes”: One of Hollywood’s Most Underrated Actors Considers Zack Snyder to Be Just as Brilliant as Guillermo del Toro
Image
For a long, long time, Hollywood had relegated Zack Snyder to a somewhat diminished status as a director for his previously difficult experiences with Warner Bros. Both his attempts at adapting comic books to live-action films had been deemed a severe failure of creative and artistic sensibilities. Yet, the films in question – Watchmen and Dceu – raised an army of fans who have been unwavering in their fealty to Snyder.

Watchmen [Credit: Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures]

Guillermo del Toro has had a somewhat similar experience in the industry as well. The director, famously known for his love for the bizarre, has nearly 20 fully-developed scripts in his possession that were never made into a movie. Despite his Oscar-winning credentials and unique artistic vision, Hollywood has hardly done right by del Toro.

However, even beyond their underappreciated vision as auteurs, there is a singular quality that unifies both Snyder and del Toro under one creative umbrella.

Back when Walt Disney’s animated version of Pinocchio was initially released, Guillermo del Toro went to watch it with his mom, as a child. Perhaps, that’s when dreams of remaking the story had first sparked in his eyes, especially since the filmmaker claimed to have found the plot compelling.
