What an iconic music video for those of us who had the joy (and sadness) of growing up in the 2000s. Bayer delivers an impeccable visual companion for an already impeccable song. This is the Bohemian Rhapsody of Punk Rock.
What I love the most about this music video is that it perfectly captures the heartbreaking nature of being a teenager, feeling lost and lonely. That feeling magnifies when you add a failed relationship to the mix. The Jesus of Suburbia character suffers from heartbreak, a broken home and the hopelessness of the teenage years. This captures that feeling perfectly. It's so chaotic, just like being a teenager.
This also captures the overdramatic reactions we have in those years of our life and how we make decisions that are life-changing without even realizing it. The lyrics add another profound layer to an already spectacular and chaotic music video.
"At the center of the earth, in the parking lot
Of the 7-11 where I was taught
The motto was just a lie
It says, "Home is where your heart is, " but what a shame
'Cause everyone's heart doesn't beat the same
It's beating out of time"
