Filmmakers, like humans, mellow with age; at least, that’s the refrain we usually hear. But this adage is arguably true in the case of filmmaker Julie Delpy, now 54. Her social and dark commentaries always had some terrific bite to them; her Woody Allen-esque romantic comedies “2 Days in Paris” and “2 Days In New York,” in particular, replete with hilarious observations on the peculiarities of neurotic people, but from a feminine perspective. She’s directed many features since, including the mild midlife crisis/pandemic-set Netflix series “On The Verge.” Still, her latest feature, the idealistic, lefty, feel-good immigration comedy “Meet The Barbarians,” is also fairly slight, without much of the amusing prickle of her earlier works.

Until its full plot unfolds, viewers are likely to assume “Meet the Barbarians” is a sweetly nostalgic comedy. And in some ways, they’d be right. Director Julie Delpy structures her new film as a fairy tale, going so far as to introduce the action with a literal “Once upon a time in Paimpont …”
She gives us a delightful setting, heroes and villains, five distinct acts and a strong moral lesson. But while the tale is timeless, the time is two years ago. And Paimpont, a charming hamlet in Brittany, could be any number of small towns or big cities today.
Paimpont happens to be an ancient village so tiny, everyone is involved in every decision. When the film begins, the mayor, Sébastien (Jean-Charles Clichet), is proudly announcing a new initiative: Paimpont has decided to adopt a family of Ukrainian refugees. The whole town is vibrating with excitement, until they...

French-American actor and director Julie Delpy has tackled culture clash in comedies before in ”Two Days in Paris” and “Two Days in New York,” but it’s never been as poignant as in “Meet the Barbarians,” where she explores the journey of a Syrian family who find refuge in a village in Northern France.
The movie, which marks Delpy’s feature comeback after helming the Netflix series “On the Verge,” is set in Paimpont, a small town in France’s Brittany region that is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees. But instead of Ukrainians, Syrian refugees settle in town, causing some tension among locals and testing their liberal beliefs.
Charades is at Venice selling the film, which will screen at the Toronto Film Festival, and also has “Vermiglio” and “Their Children After Them” on its sales slate.

If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Julie Delpy has never gotten the chance to direct one of the dramas that she’s written. But in working on her seventh film “My Zoe” — which she wrote, directed and stars in — Delpy thought back to advice and inspiration she received from quite the mentor: the legendary Polish auteur Krzysztof Kieslowski.
Delpy worked with Kieslowski on all three films in his “Three Colors” trilogy, most notably “White” from 1994. And she explained that their discussions about fate helped inspire the work she would do on “My Zoe” decades later.
“He was really intrigued by the fact that, how do you make a film that goes against fate? He was someone that was obsessed with fate. That was the conversation. It was a spark,” Delpy told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman. “And then the idea really came clearer to me when I had my son, because suddenly, the incredible existential fear that...

Filmmaker and actress Julie Delpy knows what people expect of her. The star and co-writer of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy and the director of such bubbly romantic dramedies as “2 Days in Paris” and its sequel “2 Days in New York” may have made her acting debut for no less than Jean-Luc Godard, but she’s been kept in a certain kind of industry bubble for the last two decades.
She’s done with that now. For her latest directorial outing, passion project “My Zoe,” Delpy moves away from romances and chatty comedies into something both wholly unexpected and more personal than anything else she’s ever made. When Delpy describes the feature, a thriller debuting in Tiff’s filmmaker-centric Platform section this week, she uses the kind of descriptors that wouldn’t fit anything else she’s made during her three-decade-long career. Words like “harsh,” “unforgiving,” and “not very kind.

You don’t get to establish the overall look when you’re hired to work on a TV show that’s a season or more into its run, but the gig can still be creatively rewarding, says production designer Judy Rhee, who scored back-to-back jobs on two high-profile series in progress: “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” in its second season and “Better Call Saul” as it embarked on its fourth.
“To keep the visual continuity or the visual thread of the show intact while also introducing a different signature, or different take on the world, is always an interesting challenge,” says Rhee.
In the case of “Jessica Jones,” one of the tasks that intrigued Rhee most was creating a new living space for Jones’ ally Jeri Hogarth, a lawyer, played by Carrie-Ann Moss. “That, for me, was a big factor in taking the job,” she says. “I knew that was going...

Two very different films set in New York -- Julie Delpy's "2 Days in New York" and Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer" -- led the limited debuts this weekend, each finding so-so averages just north of $10,000. They led an overall strong specialty box office, which saw continued success from films like "Celeste and Jesse Forever," "Killer Joe," "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "The Queen of Versailles." However, Fox Searchlight saw its aggressive expansion of "Ruby Sparks" stumble, making it clear they most definitely don't have another "Little Miss Sunshine" on their hands with the Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris-directed film. One of the scariest sentences someone can utter to a spouse or partner is: "My family is coming." That's exactly what happens in "2 Days in New York," when Marion (Julie Delpy) tells Mingus (Chris Rock), her live-in beau in a New York City apartment, that her father and sister are arriving from Paris for a visit. Scary, yes, but also the pivot point for the amusing angst, misunderstandings and spats that follow in this delightful, breezy comedy from Delpy, who serves triple duty here as co-writer, director and star. This year's Tribeca Film Festival carries one of its strongest line-ups in years. In addition to films from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance and Berlin circuit, there's also a wealth of U.S. premieres or lesser-known festival movies in the line-up that look just as promising this time around; after a relatively weak SXSW, it looks like the East Coast is getting some of the good stuff.
Below, you'll find 15 films that seem among the most intriguing Tribeca has to offer this year. Of course, we can't speak for their quality as yet, but they certainly look promising at this point at time. And for the record, we haven't included the high-profile opening and closing films -- "The Five-Year Engagement" and "The Avengers" -- partly because they're getting more than enough attention elsewhere, and partly because we've already seen both (although can't review them just yet -- keep your eyes peeled...
