2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it Here), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and while fans celebrate the anniversary, director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Queer, and the Suspiria remake, is gearing up to take the helm of an American Psycho remake. Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. Guadagnino confirmed the project at the CinemaCon event last month – and now, original American Psycho cast member Chloë Sevigny, who played Patrick Bateman’s secretary Jean, has told IndieWire that...

Writer, director, cinematographer, and editor Steven Soderbergh has many talents, but he attributes career longevity to one skill above all.
“I’m someone who tries to be adaptable,” said Soderbergh when he was a guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast earlier this year. “I feel like the cockroach of the industry, like there’s no version of this that I can’t work in, no matter how nuclear it gets.”
In his 36 years of making films and television, Soderbergh has seen the business go through its share of ups, downs, shifting trends, and technological revolutions. Throughout, Soderbergh remained prolific, whether it meant rebooting the once-dead “Ocean’s 11” franchise, shooting movies on an iPhone, or trying his hand at self-distribution. No matter how much the way movies are watched or made has changed, he kept making original and unexpected films.
Which is why, considering how challenging things are for indie filmmakers...

It’s funny how time works because one week can feel like the longest thing in the world at some point in your life; other times, it will fly by instantly.
It has been seven whole days since 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15, the hour in which the world lost Robert ‘Bobby’ Nash, and it’s been a Very long week.
Fans (myself included!) have been struggling since the last few minutes of that episode, and even days later, they are left wondering why it happened and where things go from here.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
The series split the last hour of the Contagion arc between Buck and Athena out in Los Angeles looking for mad scientist Moira, who had the single dose antidote that would cure Chimney, who was quickly dying from a deadly super strain of the Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever.
It was a race against time as Athena and Buck located the antidote,...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 15The 9-1-1 fanbase is still reeling following April 17's atomic bomb of an episode. Season 8, Episode 15, titled "Lab Rats," pulled off a shocking twist and broke with tradition by killing off Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, played by the series's co-lead and executive producer, Peter Krause. In the second half of the show's high-stakes "Contagion" storyline, he sacrificed himself to save the rest of his team, including Chimney (Kenneth Choi), after the paramedic was left on death's door with seemingly no hope of survival in Episode 14. He tragically hid his own infection, so the expecting father could be cured with the lone antidote and live on, ensuring Bobby remained a selfless teammate to the end.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 “Lab Rats.”] It looks like the 9-1-1 cast is just as shocked and heartbroken as fans after the Thursday, April 17, episode killed off a major character, Peter Krause‘s Captain Bobby Nash. The conclusion of a two-parter event, “Contagion,” saw the 118 — Bobby, Hen (Aisha Hinds), and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) — rush to keep Chimney (Kenneth Choi) alive while Buck (Oliver Stark), Athena (Angela Bassett), and Karen (Tracie Thoms) tracked down the scientist with the only dose of the anti-viral. But after it was delivered, with a little evading of the FBI and military, and the evacuation began, Bobby locked himself in the lab and revealed he, too, had been exposed. However, he knew there was only one dose, so he kept quiet … and had an utterly heartbreaking goodbye with Buck and then his wife Athena. After the episode aired, the cast took to social media to react to the ...

Athena and Buck are in a race against time to get the anti-viral to save Chimney in 911 season 8, episode 15. Can they manage it?
The previous episode brought us the first half of the two-part event, Contagion. The 118 went into a lab that was working on some of the most dangerous exotic viruses in the world. It just so happened that one of the researchers had managed to speed up the incubation period, which put the life of Chimney on the line when he was exposed to it.
There is an anti-viral, but the evil researcher has it and she is in the wind. Now all eyes are on whether Athena and Buck can get to Moira in time to get the necessary anti-viral.
Is there a way to save Chimney in 911 season 8, episode 15?

A sequel to Scott Z. Burns and Steven Soderbergh‘s (“Black Bag”) global pandemic thriller “Contagion” has been teased recently by the filmmaker as he has mused about the idea of “plastics” impact on the world being a factor contributing to another horrific idea for a follow-up. But has now expanded upon that with “terrifying” sequel ideas in a recent chat with the podcast “One Decision.”
“We talk about it and have come up with some terrifying ideas,” Soderbergh said, while describing in-depth conversations he’s been having with pandemic experts.

The streaming movie charts are often full of amusing surprises. Sometimes, films that have been largely ignored for a decade or longer suddenly rocket their way into the top 10. The cause for their resurgence is usually directly attributable to something going on in the world: the movie could feature a newly minted movie star in an early role (either that or possess subject matter that is similar to a film that is raking in the dough at the box office). The death of a major filmmaker or actor is also a big driver of views, as we recently saw with the late, great Gene Hackman.
One of the biggest viewing swings of the 2020s thus far came at the start of the decade when the Covid-19 lockdown inspired millions of frightened, sheltering-in-place streaming subscribers to watch Steven Soderbergh's 2011 pandemic classic "Contagion." It was the right movie at the right...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 14 “Sick Day.”] We couldn’t be happier that the latest 9-1-1 episode — the first of a two-parter, “Contagion” — starts with some joy for Chimney (Kenneth Choi), Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), and Hen (Aisha Hinds) considering where it ends for all three of them! They, along with Karen (Tracie Thoms) and the couples’ kids, celebrate — and a cake is supposed to also reveal if Jee’s going to have a brother or sister. The problem? We know Maddie and Chimney are having a boy … and the cake says they’re having a girl. The bakery gave them the wrong order. Oops! The only other happy/calm moment comes when Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) show their new dream house-in-progress off to the kids. Besides that, it’s non-stop action that results in every single member of the 118 being in life-or-death situations at one point. First, a bus ...

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in 2020, Steven Soderbergh's 2011 film Contagion seemed like a prophecy. The film details the spread of a deadly virus originating from a single place, almost like what happened with Covid-19. There have been talks about a sequel, and in the wake of what happened during the pandemic, Soderbergh does not want to make the film for the sake of making it. "I don’t want to torture people," he told One Decision podcast. The director feels responsible for making something that doesn't seem like it's relishing the pain brought on by public health menaces or giving the public some ideas. "There are scenarios that you could come up with that I would categorize as irresponsible. You know, that I would go, ‘That’s a big idea, but I’m not sure I want to put that idea out there, frankly.’ I do think about that,...

Steven Soderbergh has spent more than two decades making all kinds of films, and yet he continues to surprise us with something new that changes the norms. His latest film, “Black Bag,” released in March 2025, is a prime example. This sleek and stylish spy thriller, written by David Koepp, has garnered widespread acclaim from critics. It follows a British intelligence officer who must investigate a list of possible traitors, one of whom could be his wife. The film’s unique premise and Soderbergh’s masterful direction showcase his ability to blend complex themes with engaging storytelling. Throughout his career, Soderbergh has always strived to tell stories that are simple in themselves but cater to a collective vision he has about cinema. His specificity stems from his belief that it is the job of a director to carve the path forward for a story wholeheartedly.

It goes without saying at this point that 911 is one of the most unpredictable shows on television. But in case you needed reminding, eight seasons in and that hasn't changed. The Ryan Murphy procedural has been thrilling viewers week in and week out for close to a decade now, and there are clearly no plans for that to change in the immediate future, as the show was just recently renewed by ABC for a ninth season.

9-1-1 kicks off the two-parter that showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider is “part action adventure and medical thriller” with the April 10 episode, and after the latest episode, ABC aired a promo offering a tease of “Contagion.” It all begins with Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) answering a 9-1-1 call. There’s a lab on fire, and as Bobby (Peter Krause) learns as the 118 arrives on scene, it’s designated for lethal and exotic viruses. There’s an explosion, then Buck (Oliver Stark) is on the roof yelling about the others being trapped. Athena (Angela Bassett) is on scene, asking, “What can we do?” Bobby, Chimney (Kenneth Choi), and Hen (Aisha Hinds) are all inside — and Hen appears to be unconscious! What’s worse: They can’t just open the doors because if they do, they’re risking releasing a very dangerous virus to the public. Watch the promo above.

When a new episode of 9-1-1 Season 8 airs next Thursday, it will kick off a two-part thriller that puts everyone in a tough spot after a lab catastrophe. While events at the beginning of the season are commonplace, there seems to be something different this close to the finish line. In 9-1-1 Season 1, Episode 14, the 118 responds to a lab emergency that takes a turn, leaving multiple firefighters stuck in a deadly situation. ABC released a sneak peek of the episode airing on April 10 that teases multiple casualties.
Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) directs the 118 to an emergency, just as she has always done. The caller claims an incident occurred in the lab after it caught fire. Any foreign element in the lab is terrible, and a fire is even worse. The carefully stored chemicals in the lab could cause unimaginable damage if the temperature rises. This specific lab deals with viruses.

Cate Blanchett & Michael Fassbender's New Spy Thriller With Near-Perfect Rt Score Arrives on Digital

Theaters are no longer the exclusive home of Black Bag. The spy thriller starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender is now available to stream on digital platforms.
Per Variety, Black Bag has landed on video-on-demand platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV in 4K Ultra HD for rent ($19.99) or digital purchase ($24.99). The arrival on digital comes less than a month after the movie hit theaters. The new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psychois still on track, according to director Luca Guadagnino, who has now offered an exciting update about the project. While details remain under wraps, the director of Challengers and Queer did say that he is currently working on the film, and that the script is in development. Unfortunately, he did not offer any update on the casting process, meaning fans will still have to wait until a new Patrick Bateman is officially revealed.

Guadagnino teased the American Psycho reboot and said that it is still on the table:

Those hoping to get a sneak peek at the upcoming Michael Jackson musical biopic Michael at CinemaCon this week were left wanting on Tuesday, as Lionsgate declined to show new footage of the controversial project. However, Michael is still scheduled for release on Oct. 3 despite the no-show.
The lack of material or information about the movie was perhaps telling, especially after producer Graham King (an Oscar winner for The Departed and the producer of Bohemian Rhapsody) revealed the first trailer for Michael during CinemaCon last year. The Lionsgate panel was held at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas today, and during their time on stage, Liongsate took the time to confirm that an American Psycho remake is happening with Luca Guadagnino at the helm, hype the Paul Feig thriller The Housemaid, and show a new trailer for The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow.
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it Here), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and for an anniversary gift, we’re getting an American Psycho remake from director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Queer, and the Suspiria remake. How Was The Infamous Box Mystery Of Se7en Solved Years Later? ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )
In Hollywood, some movie moments burn themselves into pop culture so deeply that they transcend the screen, morphing into memes and references whispered across generations. One such moment includes Brad Pitt’s agonized cry in the film Se7en, when he said, “What’s in the box?”
It’s a question that echoes through film history, a line that launched a thousand imitations, and yet, what makes it legendary isn’t just the delivery. It’s the dreadful, gut-punch revelation that follows.
Se7en: A Film Defined by Dread
For those who’ve somehow avoided spoilers for nearly three decades (which is highly impressive), Se7en is David Fincher’s masterclass in psychological horror and noir-drenched suspense. It follows veteran detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and his hotheaded partner David Mills (Brad Pitt) as they hunt a methodical serial killer,...

Certain movie directors — Hitchcock and Tarantino come to mind — constitute a genre unto themselves. Steven Soderbergh was never like that, at least not until he started making his “little” films: the cleverly plotted low-budget indie palate cleansers that he got into the habit of directing in between his more deluxe features. He did it as a way to recharge his batteries, and to remind himself that moviemaking is supposed to be fun.
You could say that Soderbergh’s first official “little” film was “Full Frontal” (2002), an all-star Hollywood satire made for $2 million, or you could say that it was “Bubble” (2005), a Middle American existential crime drama that also happened to be the first day-and-date release. In a way, though, the original Soderbergh “little” film was “Schizopolis,” the aggro experimental doodle he made all by himself and released in 1996, as a way to clear his pipes after what he characterized as...

A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.
While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. He played the iconic superspy in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, stepping into the role after the two-movie tenure...

Gwyneth Paltrow has named a $128 million 1999 psychological thriller movie among her top 5 favorite movies that she has made, as well as suggesting that her co-star should have won an Oscar for his performance. With a dynamic and varied career in film and TV, Paltrow came to prominence with roles in movies like Seven, Emma, Sliding Doors, and A Perfect Murder, before achieving international acclaim for her Academy Award-winning turn in Shakespeare in Love. Parenthood resulted in a reduction in roles in the mid-2000s before she enjoyed a career revival as Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Paltrow's best films include quirky comedies like The Royal Tenenbaums, as well as independent dramas like Hard Eight, and blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War. Director Steven Soderbergh is back in theaters with his spy thriller “Black Bag,” and is doing the press rounds leading to questions about making a follow-up to his 2011 pandemic drama “Contagion,” which got a boost during the Covid-19 lockdown as the film sort of mirrored the chaos leading up to the development of a vaccine to a mystery illness that jumped from animals into the human population.

It seems releasing two films (“Presence” and “Black Bag”), wrapping production on another (“The Christophers”), and writing a book on the making of “Jaws” isn’t enough to keep Steven Soderbergh busy. Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Soderbergh shared that he and “Contagion” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns have discussed putting together a sequel to their 2011 public health thriller, and the subject of microplastics struck a chord.
“There’s certainly a case to be made, especially in the West, for the long-term effects, environmentally, of what we eat, what we breathe. As is well known, we have plastic in our blood now. It’s in our brains,” said Soderbergh. “This is a new thing that’s got to have a pretty serious effect. There’s lots of possibilities.”
“Contagion” features an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Elliott Gould.

A potential sequel to Contagion, the 2011 disaster thriller starring Matt Damon, just got an update from director Steven Soderbergh. Contagion tells the story of healthcare professionals, government officials, and everyday working people who find themselves in chaos as a pandemic ravages the globe while the CDC works to find a cure. Contagion hits a little harder now after the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed more than seven million people. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, fans have been curious whether director Steven Soderbergh would revisit the story that now hits so much closer to home, and during a recent interview with Variety, he spoke about the chances of Contagion getting a sequel, highlighting that it would have to be something “new” but also “plausible”:...

Steven Soderbergh has had one of the most enviably cool careers in Hollywood. Since the Atlanta-born director burst onto the scene with Sex, Lies, and Videotape in 1989, he has managed to sustain an indie sensibility in his approach to filmmaking while also attaching huge stars to his projects. In 2011, Soderbergh, along with writer Scott Z. Burns, created the eerily prophetic film Contagion, which stars Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In a recent interview with Variety, Soderbergh talked about the status of a possible sequel in the post-Covid spread world and working with Burns again:
"We’ve talked about it. It would have to be about something new, but also something that’s plausible. Part of the reason people were able to find resonance in that movie when it opened, and then 10 years later when the pandemic happened, was it was rooted in reality.

Steven Soderbergh's 2011 film Contagion became a streaming hit back in 2020 during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the film had obvious parallels with the real-life pandemic the world was going through at the time. Now, fourteen years after it hit theaters, Soderbergh revealed he has had conversations about making a sequel to the 2011 film, which would bring original screenwriter Scott Z. Burns.
In an interview with Variety promoting his new film Black Bag, Soderbergh was asked about plans for a Contagion sequel, which he had proposed making back in 2020 when his film became an unexpected hit on streaming. "We’ve talked about it," Soderbergh told Variety. "It would have to be about something new, but also something that’s plausible. Steven Soderbergh explains why Contagion doesn't have a philosophical sequel yet. Directed by Soderbergh, with a script written by Scott Z. Burns, the 2011 medical thriller follows the spread of a highly contagious virus transmitted through respiratory droplets, which turns into a worldwide pandemic, and the development of a vaccine to halt its spread. Its ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bryan Cranston. In December 2020, after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Soderbergh said he and Burns were working on a philosophical sequel to Contagion.
Now, during a recent interview with Variety promoting his new movie Black Bag, Soderbergh explained why the philosophical sequel to Contagion hasn't happened yet. The director says they simply haven't found another realistic scenario that feels as frightening and plausible as the original movie. However, he hints that potential themes could include environmental and public health crises,...

At the beginning of 2020, a 9-year-old thriller by Steven Soderbergh suddenly surged in popularity. The film featured Hollywood stars in an alarmingly realistic scenario: a novel virus spreads rapidly across the globe, requiring a radical response based on humanity's faith in science, and each other. Contagion offered a vivid view of life in a pandemic, and when Covid-19 broke out, fans returned to the eerily prescient film. Soderbergh seemed to have predicted the future — but in some ways, things actually became much worse.
In Contagion, scientists race against the clock to combat a new respiratory virus that spreads rapidly from a Hong Kong wet market to the ends of the Earth. Obstacles arise in the form of public panic, anti-science rhetoric, and opportunists exploiting the situation for personal gain. With the help of expert consultants, Soderbergh and his co-writer Scott Z. Burns anticipated much about the Covid-19 pandemic, but its darker realities still surprised them.

Steven Soderbergh, the acclaimed director of Contagion, Ocean’s 11, and Traffic, has made a highly anticipated return to theatrical releases with Presence, a supernatural horror film that hit UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, 24th January. This marks the filmmaker’s first widespread cinema release in years, after a series of streaming-first projects.
Presence promises a unique perspective on the horror genre, being told entirely from the point of view of a ghost. The film stars Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), and Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), and has already garnered an impressive 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut at Sundance last year. With a script penned by David Koepp, the screenwriter behind Jurassic Park and Spider-Man, Presence blends gripping storytelling with the atmospheric tension Soderbergh is known for.

I love all things horror, but I’ve never been someone to seek out hauntings in real life. Precisely because I’ve seen so many scary movies and know not to mess with that stuff — I’m not going to be the person shouting about how not scared I am right before some creature/demon/ghost slaughters/possesses/terrifies me. Still, when the opportunity arose to see the new horror film “Presence” at an actual haunted house, I was intrigued.
“Presence” is the new film from impossible-to-pigeonhole filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, whose career shows it’s not just performers who have range. He’s made dramas, comedies, heist flicks, thrillers, biopics — but never a straight up horror film before. (The closest would probably be 2018’s stalker flick “Unsane” or 2011’s eerily prescient “Contagion.”) In some ways, “Presence” is familiar: a seemingly average family moves into a house where they are watched by an unknown entity.

In what sounds like a match made in heaven hell, The Sadness director Rob Jabbaz is set to helm the upcoming feature adaptation of Garth Ennis' Crossed.
Following the massive success of Prime Video's The Boys, we got word that Ennis' even more twisted, depraved and downright diabolical horror series is headed to the big screen late last year. The movie is in development at indie outfit Six Studios, and Ennis has already completed the script.
“It has been a real delight working with Garth Ennis and Six Studios developing Crossed for the big screen,” said Jabbaz. “From day one, our primary goal has been to deliver a faithful adaptation of the original series, along with a few new surprises. I certainly hope audiences are ready for this.”
Crossed and its various spin-offs are generally considered to be among the most disturbing comics of all time, and with good reason.

Steven Soderbergh has never made a horror movie, and certainly not of the ghostly, haunted variety. Studios and networks proceed very carefully when it comes to selecting a release or premiere date for movies and television shows. Obviously, there are some no-brainers: when Marvel comes hurtling into the marketplace with a mega-tentpole like "Avengers: Endgame," you know it's targeting the outset of the summer movie season. But when it comes to a less star-studded effort like, say, "Captain America: Brave New World," it might lock in on a less spectacle-laden time frame like February or March, where there won't be such fierce competition for screens. Meanwhile, with television in the age of miniseries and short season orders, networks and streamers can now use the whole calendar year instead of going heavy in the fall.

When it comes to Stephen King fans, some have a penchant for Pennywise, while others have a secret love for "The Tommyknockers," even if Stephen King himself isn't a fan. However, after Goodreads conducted a poll, one book took the top spot after earning an average rating of 4.35 out of 5. Published in 1978, "The Stand" is King's epic tale of a virus that wipes out most of the Earth's population, leaving those who remain to fight on the side of good or evil. Like some of King's most engrossing work, a wild tapestry unfolds with a host of different characters all walking their own paths. Eventually, all roads lead to a final showdown with the mysterious Randall Flagg, who arrives just in time to tip what's left of America into even more chaos, ending with the fate of humanity being gambled in Las Vegas.
