Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.
Now the brand is making its way back to where it started, on the USA Network. NBCUniversal’s ad-supported cable net is plotting a return to original scripted programming with light, frothy character-based procedurals in the mold of the lineup from the “blue sky”era that included Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, White Collar and Suits, Deadline has learned.
After the end of the WGA strike, NBCU scripted executives put out feelers about their USA plans and already have identified a handful of ideas they are considering for development but there are no deals yet,...

Steve Stark, MGM TV Executive Who Championed ‘Handmaid’s Tale,’ Exits for Producing Deal (Exclusive)
Longtime MGM Television executive Steve Stark, who championed the studio’s Emmy-winning drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is leaving his executive post and transitioning to a producing deal with the studio.
Just over a year ago, Stark was named president of the newly formed MGM/UA Television label and extended his deal with the studio. He had previously served as MGM’s head of scripted television production and development, overseeing all scripted content from concept to production and leading development of new projects. Stark’s segue to a producing role at a time of massive transition for the content business — and persistent sale rumors around MGM — is no surprise. It’s said to have been under discussion for some time.

The mystery of what happened to Kate Kane, the former Batwoman, hangs over The CW series when it returns Sunday with its new caped crusader, Ryan Wilder.
On Friday, “Batwoman” showrunner Caroline Dries promised the show will give an actual answer as to why Ruby Rose’s character is no longer around. Of course, if you’ve been reading this website, you know just why there is a new Batwoman prowling around Gotham City beating up criminals — and Dries understands that her audience does too.
“Yes, it’s something that will resolve, and I appreciate what we’re asking of the audience. They know the actress who plays Kate Kane has left the show, so I don’t want people to feel like this is a big blank,” Dries said during The CW’s press day. “I will say as a storyteller, this will be a lot of twists and turns.

The newly formed MGM/UA Television label has found a president in Steve Stark, who previously served as MGM’s president of scripted television production and development.
MGM Worldwide Television Group chairman Mark Burnett made the announcement late Friday, adding that Stark has extended his contract with the studio as part of his new role.
“We are pleased that Steve has extended his deal and is now focused on this new specialized division, as I find new ways to expand the overall MGM TV global group through several new labels,” said Burnett. “This supports our broader commitment to grow MGM’s incredible library IP, just as Steve recently did with the new ‘Vikings: Vahalla’ series. Our IP is unparalleled and is in great demand”.
Stark has been with MGM since 2011. Prior to that he served as president and exec producer of Steve Stark Productions, which had an overall deal with NBCUniversal Television.

While the new American Horror Story season is the Murder House/Coven crossover, the first episode is focused predominantly on all of the new Apocalypse characters. There are plenty of familiar faces - did you really expect that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters wouldn't be back on day one? - but just one familiar character so far. That's Michael Langdon, Tate Langdon's evil son, who showed up as a toddler in the Murder House finale. The grown-up Michael appears in the fallout shelter at the end of the episode, and it looks like he'll be shaking things up for the earth's few remaining survivors.
One of those survivors is Andre, played by Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman. If his face looks familiar to you, he's had a number of pre-ahs roles, playing characters in decidedly better circumstances. Most recently and notably, Bowyer-Chapman played producer Jay Carter on the dating show spoof UnREAL.

In the “Black Mirror” episode “Be Right Back,” artist Martha (Hayley Atwell) makes a last-ditch effort to deal with the overwhelming grief of losing her boyfriend Ash (Domhnall Gleeson). After his fatal car accident, Martha uploads all of his social media into an AI that allows it to mimic the way he thinks, speaks, and acts. NBC’s new summer series “Reverie” also allows people to revisit loved ones via their social media footprint, although in a different setting.
While “Black Mirror” brought the AI to life into Martha’s sphere of existence first via text and phone chats and then in a bio-enhanced android, NBC’s series makes the user enter a virtual world for the reunion. Not bound by the mundane rules of physics and logic, this alternate existence allows “Reverie” to take fanciful flights that lead to exciting visual and psychological explorations.

Fox has put in development, Ball & Chain, a drama written/executive produced by Peter Ocko (Fairly Legal) and executive produced by Steve McPherson through Lionsgate TV. The project, which falls under McPherson’s first-look deals at Fox and Lionsgate, centers on two ex-operatives with screwed up personal lives who are set up by their intelligence agency to become romantically entangled and run missions as a team. Ocko, repped by Vision Art, has comedy pilot Divide and Conquer at USA. Fox also has bought a comedy project from Andrew Gurland and Justin Hurwitz, creators of the network’s half-hour pilot The Gabriels last season. Like The Gabriels, the new project, also produced by 20th TV, is based on Hurwitz’s life, but instead of his childhood, it involves his early adulthood. It centers on a brother and sister who develop an adult relationship that wreaks havoc on everyone else around them.

Sarah Shahi has been a fan favorite for TV viewers for years, from early roles on The L Word and Life to her short-lived USA series Fairly Legal to last season on Chicago Fire.
However, her Season 2 stint on Person of Interest was so well-received that she is now a series regular on the CBS drama and will play a key role on Tuesday's Person of Interest Season 3 premiere. Yes, she will return to conclude her story on Chicago Fire, but her new home is alongside co-stars Michael Emerson, Jim Caviezel, Taraji P Henson and fellow new series regular Amy Acker.
I spent the day on set this month in New York City's Chinatown, talking to Shahi between scenes to get more insight into Shaw; whether she sees a romance blossoming between her character and Caviezel’s Reese; and whether there are any similarities between Shaw and Fairly Legal’s Kate Reed.

Morales will debut on Episode 3, with Hotch acting as section chief in the meantime following the death of Strauss on the Criminal Minds Season 8 finale.

So, how exactly will Parks and Recreation address Chris Pratt‘s hot new bod in Season 6?
We floated a number of totally realistic ideas to explain Andy’s adonis-like transformation, but it seems showrunner Mike Schur has his own (admittedly much better) plan in mind.

“There is a joke that I wrote in the premiere that I think we’ll probably shoot that is a little tiny acknowledgement or nod to the fact that he looks very different to the way he normally looks,” the executive producer tells TVGuide.

USA is heading into the half-hour comedy world in a big way this year. Its newest endeavor in that area is a family comedy series, "Divide & Conquer," from executive producer Peter Ocko ("Fairly Legal," "The Office," "Pushing Daisies").
"Divide & Conquer" is about "four children finding their way to adulthood in these complicated times, and the parents whose lives they're sucking dry to get there." The big family deals with love and support and "all the other things parents do to mess up their kids" and focuses on Ben and Charlotte -- parents who just hope their kids move out some day.
This marks the fourth new comedy greenlit by USA for 2014. The others are "Sirens" (following EMTs), "Playing House" (a female buddy comedy) and "Love Is Dead" (about a company that specializes in breaking up relationships). "Sirens" and "Playing House" already have series orders, wile "Divide & Conquer" and "Love Is...
