Kids watch some terrible movies. I should know, I have two of them. A24, the independent film and TV studio that has become synonymous with quality, is out to change that.
On September 4, A24 published the 288-page “Hey Kids, Watch This!,” a collection of more than 100 movie recommendations for families. None of them, by the way, are A24 films. The curation was performed by a group of “discerning critics, animators, and directors,” according to a press release. IndieWire’s own chief film critic and reviews editor David Ehrlich contributed a primer on how to talk about movies with your kids.
“Hey Kids, Watch This!” covers both hits and deep cuts. How deep? Has your preschooler seen Yuri Norstein’s 10-minute short film from 1975, “Hedgehog in the Fog”? Right, mine neither. Are the ’70s not ancient enough for your young-Old-Hollywood head? How about the 100-year-old film “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” from German director Lotte Reiniger?...

The film in second place was Ferdinand with 7.3M views.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 debuted in second place among TV, also with 8.4M views. The series returned for its final season on August 8 and, seeing as it is already rivaling the first place title, it’s likely that The Umbrella Academy will take the lead in the coming weeks.

It appears to have been a bit of a slow week on Netflix, with the most-watched title racking up just 12.8 million views. That was Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, ranking atop the English films list.
On the TV side of things, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder made its debut with 7.4M views, which was good enough to send the YA mystery series to No. 1 on the English TV chart.
Cobra Kai Season 6A seems to be losing steam, cutting its viewership by more than half this week, with just 4.1M views. Still, that put it in second place. Meanwhile, Simone Biles Rising had a good week, rising to No. 3 with 3.8M views, which is up just slightly from the week prior, likely aided by her stellar performance at the Paris Olympics.
Elsewhere in TV, Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam took fourth with 3.5M views, while Season 6 of Too Hot To Handle moved down to No. 6 with 2.7M views.
Netflix’s latest standup special, Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats, managed No. 7 with 2.5M views after its Saturday night debut. That’s a strong showing for the comedy special, which will likely rake in a larger audience this upcoming week, since only about 24 hours of viewership were accounted for during this measurement window.

Back to film, Find Me Falling dropped to No. 5 this week, down from the top spot the week prior, drawing just 5.6M views. Thats about a third of the audience it had in the previous interval. Kids animation appeared to be the strongest winner this week with three spots in the English film Top 10 — Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie at #2 (7M views), Trolls Band Together at #4 (5.9M views), and The Bad Guys at #8 (4.2M views).
Under Paris is still going strong on the non-English film list, claiming seventh place with 1.7M views. It has already made its way onto Netflix’s most popular list with more than 95M views since it debuted, but it has about a month left in its 91-day premiere window, meaning it could very well surpass Troll to be the streamer’s most-watched non-English language film of all time.
Also, the eighth and final season of teen crime drama Elite moved into the top spot on the Non-English TV List, clocking 3.9M views.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Paramount Global lost $490 million from streaming in the final quarter of 2023, when Paramount+ added 4.1 million subscribers. The service now has 67.5 million subs; it is now expected to turn a profit in the U.S. in 2025.
Paramount+ revenue jumped 69 percent from the same quarter last year thanks to price hikes and that sub growth. The overall company fell a bit shy of Wall Street’s revenue mark but turned a slight profit. Though Q4 advertising revenue rose at Paramount’s streaming segment, the growth was nowhere near the line-item’s decline at linear TV.
Losses from (mostly) Paramount+ are nothing new. 321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

This marks the seventh year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 predictions for Oscars Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Thanks to Mario, J. Robert Oppenheimer and M3GAN, Universal Pictures ranked as the highest-grossing studio at the 2023 box office.
The company’s slate — a range of 24 films that included “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Oppenheimer” and “M3GAN” — collected $4.907 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Universal’s victory is notable because it marks the first time since 2015 that Disney was not the global box office leader.
Disney slid to second place in terms of market share as its 17 new films, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “The Little Mermaid” among them, raked in $4.827 billion globally. In a note to press, the studio partially attributed the $80 million difference to the fact that Disney released seven fewer movies than Universal in 2023. It also went on to stress that Disney had the most titles of any studio in the top 10 this year, with four of the...

Releasing three tentpole movies into December, Warner Bros is walking away with bragging rights to giving the holiday season an important boost – particularly given the absence of an Avatar or a Spider-Man as in recent years.
In total, WB’s three titles on release have grossed $700 million since Wonka first began offshore rollout on December 6. After that, the studio launched Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom worldwide and The Color Purple domestically. The combined split on those is $277M for North America and $423M at the international box office.
Said Adam Aron, Chairman & CEO of AMC Entertainment, on Sunday: “I really want to salute David Zaslav and Warner Bros for its courageous decision to hold its Christmas movie slate intact. The entire movie ecosystem needs for Hollywood’s major studios to continue to release movies theatrically in significant quantity, so that we all can survive and thrive. And when studios do,...

The final season of The Crown got off to a slower start in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — which might have something to do with the fact that Netflix released only a part of the season.
The Emmy-winning drama was the most watched show on streaming for the week of Nov. 13-19, but its 943 million minutes of viewing was less than half of that for season five’s opening (2.13 billion minutes) a year ago. It’s worth noting that Netflix released just four of The Crown’s final 10 episodes on Nov. 16 rather than the full season; the remaining six debuted Dec. 14 (and, because of the four-week lag for Nielsen’s streaming charts, watch time figures for those episodes won’t be public until mid-January).
The Crown was the only original series in Nielsen’s overall top 10. David Fincher’s Netflix movie The Killer finished 10th with 557 million minutes of viewing, but...

The early autumn slump has been reversed.
France’s box office bounced back in November following a downturn in September and October with 15.1 million ticket sales, a total gross of €108.8m based on an average ticket price of €7.2.
However, admissions were still down 19.6% from the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average for the month.
It was enough to assure solid annual figures to date with ticket sales hitting upwards of 162.8 million admissions (€1.17bn), above 2022’s full year 152 million admissions but below the 2017-2019 pre-pandemic average of 208 million tickets per year. Estimates suggest 2023 will reach between 180-190 million.

Updated: New global entry Queen Bey’s concert movie/documentary Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé put a ring on a $27.4M global debut this weekend. Included in that is $6.4M from 2,621 overseas cinemas.
While the movie is rated 100% by both audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it did come in low versus offshore projections. But we can’t fault the 32-time Grammy winner, nor her global popularity. And, it would be unfair to direct comp to the recent Taylor Swift of it all. Beyoncé skews older than the Swifties and so the rush-out is a differentiator.
In IMAX, Renaissance did $5.1M global to become the 2nd biggest IMAX worldwide opening weekend for a musical act film (concert or documentary). Of that, $500K was from 125 overseas screens.
From what we understand, France was the best start for Renaissance at $1.4M, followed by the UK at $1.2M and Australia at $400K. Overseas market releases still to come include Brazil, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain, Thailand and more.
While a global event from an iconic star is indeed exciting, we have to hand it to Hindi cinema which is on a tear this year and which had another hit at home, across the diaspora and beyond this session. Animal, the revenge thriller by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is winning the weekend globally. As we always say, it is difficult to get reliable numbers out of the market, but producers T-Series have announced a 356 crore ($42.7M) worldwide opening session.
The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer on December 1 delivered the biggest non-holiday global bow for a Hindi film ever and is setting new highs for an A-rated (adults only) pic in the home market. In North America, Animal roared to an estimated $6.14M on about 700 screens, the second biggest opening weekend of all time for a Bollywood film in that market. We will update with individual offshore market figures.
In holdovers, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon added an impressive $28.6M this frame from 63 overseas hubs. The Apple Original Films produced/Sony Pictures distributed action epic now counts $90.9M international for $136.6M global. Holdover markets dropped by just 46% as the film sees strong performance offshore. While it was a low opening, which is to be expected these days, China led new markets with $2.8M. Japan debuted to $900K, 65% ahead of the launch of Killers of the Flower Moon. Korea is still to release.
The Top 5 markets are the UK ($11.8M), France ($9.9M), Germany ($6.2M), Spain ($6.2M) and Italy ($6.1M). The worldwide IMAX cume is $12.6M.
Disney’s Wish in its second weekend added $18.8M from 33 markets as it continues staggered offshore release. The international running total is $39.6M for $81.6M global.
After previews last Sunday, France and Germany debuted this session. Both were No. 1 launches. In holdovers, the drop was 44% (-38% excluding China).
The Top 5 to date are the UK ($5.5M), China ($5.3M), France ($4.1M), Mexico ($3.6M) and Germany ($3.5M).
Still to come are Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea and Brazil.
Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes slurped up a further $14.9M overseas, lifting international to $122.7M and global to $243.9M (after crossing the century and double century marks earlier in the week).
Tops to date are the UK ($16.2M), Germany ($10.9M), France ($9.4M), Australia ($9.3M) and Mexico ($8.7M).
In local play, Korean political drama 12.12: The Day has provided a great end-of-year salve, grossing $34.2M through two weekends to become the 3rd biggest local film of the year, and 6th overall, in the market.

Lionsgate Films enjoyed the top spot of the box-office weekend as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes debuted at number one this weekend.

The big new release of the weekend is the prequel film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which is currently tracking for a $50 million domestic opening. That number would make it the first Hunger Games film to open under $100 million at the domestic box office with the last film in the franchise, 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 previously being the lowest at $102.6 million. The good news for this prequel that features the origins of President Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the earlier films) is that it cost a modest (by today’s standards) $100 million. So with an opening in that $50 million range plus good word of mouth, this one has the potential to leg out over the holidays.

As expected, Netflix had a quick hit on its hands this weekend: David Fincher’s “The Killer” was an immediate #1 on the streamer. Credit the genre and star Michael Fassbender for giving it a boost that even top directors like Fincher don’t always guarantee.
After all, even Fincher’s first Netflix film, “Mank,” wasn’t a hit. His second offering for the streamer is immediately doing far better than his 2019 black-and-white biopic. Despite good reviews — and eventual Oscar nominations — “Mank” made Netflix’s top 10 for just one day and it only ranked at #10.
As for “The Killer,” its action appeal, a lead actor not known for streaming originals, and elevated festival attention all seem to have contributed to its immediate ascension to #1. It replaced “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with Sony’s big summer hit still #2.

Holding its ground in fourth place, Priscilla took in $4.8 million to give the A24 product a three-week total of $12.7 million. “The Marvels” topped the South Korean box office on its opening weekend, but failed to lift cinema activity out of its recent slump.
“The Marvels” opened with $2.35 million between Friday and Sunday, and a market share of nearly 42%, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over its five-day opening run the film pulled in a total of $3.4 million.
Those scores were enough to take top place from “The Boy and the Heron,” which had been number one for the two previous weekends, but not enough to increase cinemagoing in Korea. Nationwide aggregate box office totaled only $5.63 million over the weekend, down for a second weekend and far below the summer highs when $10 million was the baseline figure.
In March 2019, the franchise film’s predecessor “Captain Marvel” earned $15.6 million on its opening weekend ($20.6 million over five days) and went on to an aggregate of $39.0 million.

Updated: Disney/Marvel’s The Marvels has, as we expected yesterday (see below), come in with the lowest start ever for a Disney MCU title worldwide and internationally. The $110.3M global launch estimate includes $63.3M from the international box office in 51 material markets, and $47M from domestic.
There’s some not so bad news in that The Marvels opened No. 1 in all material markets.
China, as expected, came in really low. It’s curious that there is still no Maoyan audience score, but the Douban critics thrashing (5.4) is clearly not helping. Nevertheless, the market was tops for The Marvels with $11.7M for the launch, followed by the UK...
