Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

Take a gander at the last 40 years of cinema, and you’ll find at least one universal truth: The people love Tom Hanks.
The 66-year-old actor is known around Hollywood and the world as an affable everyman, with as much capacity for heady drama as he has a knack for quippy comedy. Hanks’ most famous roles range from the light and whimsical to the darkly complex. He’s also responsible for delivering lines in some of cinema’s most quotable movies, including “A League of Their Own” (“There’s no crying in baseball!”) and “Apollo 13”.
Hanks cut his teeth as a stage actor, performing Shakespeare and other plays in his hometown of Lakewood, California for much of the late ’70s. At 24-years-old, Hanks made his first movie appearance as a flirty jogger in the slasher “He Knows You’re Alone” before starring opposite Daryl Hannah in Ron Howard’s romantic...

“Abbott Elementary” will finally reveal Janine’s mother on the ABC comedy’s April 12 episode, and even though it’s April Fool’s Day, we’re not (Cookie) Lyon: It’s “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson, who will play Vanetta on the hit comedy series.
The casting of Henson was revealed Saturday at the Paley Center for Media’s annual PaleyFest LA event, where an “Abbott Elementary” panel featured stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Wiliams and William Stanford Davis in person, as well as Janelle James and Chris Perfetti via Zoom from New York. Pre-taping a message was star and executive producer Quinta Brunson, who wasn’t able to attend — as she’s hosting tonight’s installment of “Saturday Night Live.”

Tom Hanks has starred in a variety of films, with many receiving critical praise and others that were panned. But there was only one film he did that was so stressful on him that it gave him a new perspective on acting.
Tom Hanks’ acting career once got to his head Tom Hanks | Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images
As is the case with many actors, Hanks became interested in the craft during his childhood years. The Oscar-winner confided that his life at home growing up, though wholesome, could be lonely at times. Especially considering that Hanks was an only child. His chef father both worked and moved around a lot during Hanks’ youth, which contributed to his loneliness.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

If one were to apply the "Predator" handshake meme to Nia Vardalos and James Cameron, their clasped hands should probably be labeled, "Making incredibly long-legged hits at the box office." Cameron, mind you, has done this a tad more often than Vardalos has at this stage in their respective careers, but the mere fact that I was even able to write that sentence with a straight face is a testament to just how massive a sleeper success "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was upon its release in 2002. To this day, it remains the second-highest-grossing film to never hit the top spot at the U.S. box office during its theatrical run.

Jack Harlow released his debut album “Thats What They All Say” in 2020, but his upcoming sophomore release, “Come Home the Kids Miss You” (punctuation is for chumps), could make an even bigger splash when it’s released on May 6. It comes after he topped the charts and earned a Grammy nomination for “Industry Baby,” his collab with Lil Nas X, then topped the charts again with “First Class,” his first number-one as a lead artist. But speaking of collabs, who are the featured artists appearing on his new release.
SEERock and Roll Hall of Fame 2022 inductees: Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon
He announced the track list on May 4. We already knew there was a little Fergie on it since “First Class” samples her 2007 single “Glamorous.” But he also teams up with Pharrell Williams on the track “Movie Star.” Drake shows up in “Churchill Downs.

Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the minimal amount of human blood she needs to stay alive.
Gummer will play the role of Claire. The heiress of a pharmaceutical empire, Claire is a brilliant scientist who turned down the family’s billion-dollar business to pursue a humbler, nobler career in disease research. But her life gets turned upside down when her estranged, ailing father summons her home and reveals a terrible secret.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

On August 18, Ron Meyer was forced to resign his chairmanship at Universal Studios in the face of a sexual liaison come to light. As a longtime executive admitting that he paid off a mistress in order to prevent his company from facing embarrassment, it’s hard to imagine who would call him a victim of cancel culture. However unwittingly, he is part of a cultural revolution in Hollywood, one that is seeing the new Hollywood order push aside the old. Expect more veterans to be put out to pasture, victims of their fat paychecks, limited viability, or in the cases of Meyer and respected Warner Bros. studio head Kevin Tsujihara, the lure of the same femme fatale.
Dallying with Charlotte Kirk cost both 25-year studio executives their jobs, after each admitted to having consensual affairs with the British actress, who was trying to leverage a Hollywood career. Like WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey before him,...

With movie theaters still shuttered as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the World War II thriller “Greyhound” starring Tom Hanks made its debut on Apple TV+ on July 10, instead of on the big screen where it was initially intended to be released by Sony Pictures on June 12. But does the economical, 91-minute nautical drama (80 minutes if you don’t count the end credits) play well to critics regardless of the size of screen?
As of this writing the film has received generally positive reviews with a MetaCritic score of 62 based on 31 reviews counted thus far: 21 positive, nine somewhat mixed, and only one outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative, the film is rated 77% fresh based on 109 reviews, only 25 of which give it a thumbs down. The Rt critics’ consensus summarizes the reviews by saying, “‘Greyhound’s’ characters aren’t as robust as its action sequences,...

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

The first trailer for the seafaring World War II epic “Greyhound,” directed by Aaron Schneider, has landed. The movie stars Tom Hanks as a Navy commander on his first wartime assignment amid World War II’s Battle for the Atlantic between the Allied and the Axis powers. Hanks also wrote the film’s screenplay, from a novel by C.S. Forester. The movie hits U.S. shores on June 12. Watch the trailer below.
In “Greyhound,” in the early days of World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the North Atlantic while being pursued by Nazi U-boats. Amid the treachery of the maritime battle at stake, Krause must also face his own demons and self-doubts as a newly minted commander. Liza Minnelli graces the cover of Variety magazine’s annual Oscar edition, but anyone expecting the Hollywood icon to open up about Renée Zellweger’s performance as Judy Garland in the film “Judy” will be disappointed. Minnelli, a Best Actress Oscar winner herself for Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” film adaptation, tells Variety she has no interest in seeing the film. The only comment Minnelli will make regarding Zellweger and “Judy” is the following: “I hope [Zellweger] had a good time making it.”
Zellweger is considered the frontrunner to win the Best Actress prize for playing Garland, mother of Liza Minnelli. The latter appears briefly in the Rupert Goold-directed drama, played by actress Gemma-Leah Devereux at the moment that Minnelli, in her 20s, had already launched a successful Broadway career. Zellweger has swept awards season this year by winning Best Actress trophies at the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, the BAFTA Awards,...

They’re the scenes that get us talking. They’re the moving moments in which a film comes into focus not only for the audience, but also for the actors. While they may not necessarily be the clips chosen by the Academy to showcase their nominees, these sequences hold something special within.
This year’s moments that made an impact on the performers involve a famous performer in the spotlight, a mother making an emphatic plea for her son’s innocence, three women debating their careers after horrific events and an ordinary woman challenged to do the extraordinary. All three of these films in awards contention this season seek to restore luster to the legacy of history makers who have either been revered, such as Harriet Tubman, or reviled, including Richard Jewell and Megyn Kelly.

In a prescient Variety column in 1978, reporter Jim Harwood talked about the blurring distinction (artistic and technical) between film and television. He wrote: “Is a ‘motion picture’ any less of an accomplishment if it’s beamed from Hollywood directly to a wall-sized screen in somebody’s home instead of being hauled in cans to something called a theatre? We suppose there will be a lot of arguments about that in the next 50 years.”
Yes, Mr. Harwood, there have indeed been many heated arguments, often centered on streaming services including Amazon and Netflix — and especially during awards time. TV and film seem separate, but, in truth, those two have been deeply connected for nearly decades.

The one and only Pam Grier will be honored by Cinema St. Louis with a ‘Women in Film Award’ when she’s in town for this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Pam’s iconic movie career began when she moved to Los Angeles in the late ‘60s from her native North Carolina at age 18. After a tiny role in Russ Meyer’s Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970), she landed a job as a receptionist for American International Pictures where she was discovered by Jack Hill, an Aip director who cast her in a pair of women’s prison films: The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage (1972). Soon she was known as the “Queen of Blaxploitation” at a time when film roles for African-American women were, as Grier puts it, “practically invisible, or painfully stereotypical”.

Diversity is kind of a hot topic nowadays. As citizens of a melting pot of a culture, it’s nice to be represented in mainstream entertainment. And if we’re being honest, it’s not just about diversity, but authenticity. It always rings a bit false when you have a white person portraying a person of color. It’s especially easy to get away with this in animation, where you don’t even see the voice actors.
Studios have gotten away with this practice for years, but in today’s world, they’re making a conscious effort to create films that respect the culture it’s portraying, and part of that has to do with the voice cast. This newer approach is expanding to Coco, the latest film from Pixar inspired by Día de Muertos, a celebration of the dearly departed.

Disney·Pixar’s “Coco,” a multi-generational story about the power of family relationships, features characters from the Land of the Living, and their loved ones who’ve moved on to the Land of the Dead.
Joining aspiring musician Miguel, voiced by Anthony Gonzalez; charming trickster Hector, voiced by Gael García Bernal; and musical icon Ernesto de la Cruz, voiced by Benjamin Bratt; are a host of colorful characters and the voice talent behind them that bring both worlds to life.
“These parallel worlds couldn’t be more different,” said Unkrich. “One is the Rivera family’s charming and hardworking hometown of Santa Cecilia, and the other is the vibrant, rich land where loved ones go when they’ve passed. ‘Coco’ introduces characters from both worlds on the eve of Día de los Muertos—one extraordinary night when a living boy named Miguel gets a glimpse of the other side.”

MaryAnn’s quick take… The it’s-about-damn-time true story that puts paid to the notion that only white men had the Right Stuff. Often funny, ultimately feel-good, hugely exhilarating. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Once upon a time, such as during the early years of America’s space program, computer meant not “machine very good at doing math stuff superfast” (those were only just starting to roll out) but “person who does manual calculations.” This was considered rather menial labor, particular when a woman did it… and lots of women did it. (Obviously women had to do it: it was menial labor.) Though these women were as smart and as educated as the men they worked alongside, and often did much...

Emma Stone's favorite place for sushi in Los Angeles is a no-frills spot in a Sunset Boulevard strip mall, tucked alongside a laser hair-removal clinic and a FedEx store. It's here, having barely taken a seat, that she starts telling me about her hiatal hernia. "I can't have spicy foods," Stone says. The issue, it turns out, is that part of her stomach protrudes "into my esophagus," which sounds gnarly but is actually pretty manageable, increased chances of acid reflux notwithstanding. "I was born with it," Stone notes cheerfully.
