Amigo the Devil is prepping for the release of his new album, Yours Until the War Is Over, arriving February 23rd. In advance of the LP, the dark-folk troubadour has unveiled a new song, albeit in an unconventional manner.
Following the official release of the singles “Cannibal Within” and “The Mechanic,” the singer-guitarist also known as Danny Kiranos has leaked another new tune, “Once Upon a Time at Texaco (Pt. 1).” Although it was posted unlisted on YouTube a few days ago, many fans discovered the new track via a voicemail at the phone number (458) 867-1239.
That phone number came from a wild and wacky late-night TV commercial promoting “The Mechanic” that Amigo hoped to get aired on MTV and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Unfortunately, the ad got resoundingly rejected for being “too violent.”
“We made a commercial for our little mechanic shop and it was clearly too hot for TV,...

When you talk about John Sayles, do you talk about America? Watching and examining his beautiful tapestry of films, this reveals itself an easy question to ask and an easy question to answer. There may be no single filmmaker who has better captured the agony and ecstasy of the American experiment than Sayles. Yet his pictures never feel like homework. They’re funny, heartbreaking, and full of characters that are well-rounded and sharply drawn.
The Film Stage got the opportunity to speak with Sayles about his 1996 masterpiece Lone Star (now available on 4K and Blu-ray courtesy of the Criterion Collection), as well lesser-seen gems like Limbo, Go for Sisters, and Amigo.
Listen to an audio version of the interview below followed by a written version, edited for length and clarity.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we’re honored to chat with iconic director John Sayles, whose essential crime epic Lone Star is now available from The Criterion Collection in both 4K Uhd + Blu-ray.
Our B-Sides today include Limbo, Amigo, and Go For Sisters. We also discuss Sayles’ parallel careers as a screenwriter and a novelist. He talks about the work he did on the Toshirô Mifune/Scott Glenn actioner The Challenge (director John Frankenheimer asking him to write new draft over a weekend before an impending strike); he discusses what he learned working for Roger Corman early in his career; which genre he’s still itching to direct; his love of the recent Godzilla Minus One; and the slew of scripts that never got made.

Chris Cooper celebrates his 68th birthday on July 9, 2019. The Oscar-winning actor has leant his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).

Still doing it his way: Sayles today.

The interview was set for 10:30 Am. Usually they run a few minutes late as the celebrity works his way through a call list. When the moment arrives an assistant handles the intros. Not this time. At precisely 10:30:00, the phone rang and iconic Indie filmmaker John Sayles introduced himself. And why not? A no-nonsense, get- it -done type of auteur, Sayles handles his own publicity calls and was keen to discuss his remarkable and varied career in advance of a weekend retrospective at La’s Cinefamily February 18 - 20.
Sayles broke into the business, like so many before him, by working with genre legend Roger Corman who figuratively and literally wrote the book on low budget filmmaking. “I got very lucky, didn’t realize it at the time, “Sayles recalls. “I wrote three screenplays (Piranha, The Lady in Red...

As filmmakers are getting hired left and right for TV gigs, streaming series, and more, I really hope someone remembers that American indie veteran John Sayles is still around and kicking and not just sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring. For the past few years, Sayles has been getting his movies made, even if "Honeydripper," "Amigo," and "Go For Sisters" have only found a limited audience. But fans of his work will be happy to know he's got a new effort on the horizon. Read More: John Sayles Talks The Politics Of 'Amigo' & Working With A Filipino Cast Peninsula Daily News reports that Sayles will head to Fort Worden State Park next summer to shoot "To Save The Man," and naturally, it's another tale of history, politics, class, and more. John Sayles’ latest film, Go For Sisters, receives an unceremonious DVD release from Freestyle Digital Media. While it snagged Yolonda Ross a supporting Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards after a muted theatrical release, it seems there will be less ado championing the home viewing release. Denied a Blu-ray option, Edward James Olmos still takes top billing even though the film belongs to actresses Ross and LisaGay Hamilton. Despite the continuation of this maligned marketing, with a little luck, Sayles’ best film in years will hopefully reach the broader audience it deserves.

To Indiewire readers, Dane DeHaan is in all likelihood a familiar name. But to folks who don't venture out to the local arthouse cinema on a frequent basis, the 28-year-old actor is probably unknown. That's all about to change today as his first blockbuster, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," unspools in theaters nationwide. DeHaan first cut his teeth by sharing the screen with Academy Award winner Chris Cooper in John Sayles' Philippine-American war epic "Amigo" in 2010, and followed that up by playing a key supporting part in the critically admired HBO drama "In Treatment." He's since appeared in the sci-fi sleeper hit "Chronicle," Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines," Atom Egoyan's "Devil's Knot," and the Beat Generation drama "Kill Your Darlings," opposite Daniel Radcliffe. While "Chronicle" was a commercial hit (it grossed over $60 million in the U.S.), it was a relatively indie production compared to his latest,...

Moviegoers are starting to pick up on what Hollywood figured out long before reviews for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2": Dane DeHaan is going to be a movie star. Remember when theater-trained actress Jessica Chastain was first being cast in movie after movie? That's what's been happening to DeHaan, who is 28. In the past year he not only took on Harry Osborn in Marc Webb's big-studio sequel but eclipsed Daniel Radcliffe in "Kill Your Darlings," starred in heavy metal 3D flick "Metallica Through the Never" and played Ryan Gosling's son in Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines." He's done a lot for someone so young. DeHaan broke out in 2008 with the HBO series "In Treatment," as Jesse, one of therapist Gabriel Byrne's patients. He made his Broadway debut that same year with David Mamet's "American Buffalo." In 2010, DeHaan won an Obie for his performance Off-Broadway in "The Aliens.

To be labelled a ‘character actor’ is something of a double-edged sword. For while it acknowledges you’ve found a niche, it also implies a certain comfort at being typecast; a familiarity in filling the same shoes again and again. And while some will forever coast on a breakthrough role, others will snatch their chance to cement their place in cinema. The list below is comprised exclusively of the latter category. They stand in the shadows, swooping in to steal the scene. Far from relying on the scraps and scripts that fall from the top table, these are the very people for whom ‘difficult’ roles are written. They are the wild cards, the secret weapons; and these seven names in our rogues gallery, having honed their craft to perfection in playing the damaged, devious and downright disturbing, are clearly enjoying themselves in the process.

For decades now, John Sayles has written and directed movies rooted first and foremost in sharply conceived characters. More recently, even as his scrappy, self-financed productions have varied in quality, this central aspect has remained in place. "Go For Sisters," like the filmmaker's previous features "Amigo" and "Honeydripper," sustains a feeble premise with richly defined characters and strong performances, yielding an underwhelming but nonetheless sustainable viewing experience. Stepping away from the period drama territory of his last two movies, Sayles returns to noir turf, with serious-minded parole officer Berenice (LisaGay Hamilton) heading south of the border with estranged old friend Fontayne (Yolanda Ross) in a bid to find Berenice's missing son, the suspect in a criminal investigation. The two women reconnect in the movie's opening scene, which finds the semi-reformed drug addict Fontayne assigned to Berenice during her parole. As echoes from early days of their...

DeHann has worked with him before, and thinks the father/son bond won't be difficult to form. Oscar-nominee John Sayles ("Amigo"), the filmmaker behind "Go for Sisters," also sidelines as a novelist, screenwriter and occasional actor. He describes his latest drama "Go for Sisters" as a story people haven’t seen before and full of terrific performances. What he hopes audiences will take away: "I always want the audience to think both about the characters they’ve met in the movie and about how the story relates to their own lives." On his inspiration: "I was thinking of some of Fred Wiseman’s early films when I started writing this." On the challenges while creating the film: "As usual, money and time. We had 19 days to shoot over 70 locations in two countries." Upcoming projects: "I have several...

You gotta admire John Sayles. An independent filmmaker long before today's current crop -- or even the directors who rose up out of the '90s scene -- his career has had its peaks and valleys, but over the past few years he's resolutely strived on, even if audiences and the industry haven't followed. His last couple pictures -- the bluesy "Honeydripper" and the sorely underseen historical drama "Amigo" -- came and went without much notice, but he's likely hoping the fates have better things in store for his next effort, "Go For Sisters." Set to premiere at SXSW next month, the first trailer for the movie has now arrived. Starring Edward James Olmos, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Yolonda Ross, Hector Elizondo, Harold Perrineau and Isaiah Washington, the film tells the story of two women who are so close they "go for sisters," who are reunited after twenty years thanks to some surprising circumstances.

After much speculation and of the many candidates, Dane DeHaan has been chosen as the heir apparent to James Franco as the next Harry Osborn in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-man. Director Marc Webb made the announcement on his Twitter.
DeHaan burst onto the scene with his turn in Chronicle, the superhero found footage film from Josh Trank, and has had roles in In Treatment, True Blood, Lincoln, and Lawless. Now he has his chance at stardom, as it’s clear that Marc Webb and company went with the “dark and edgy” side of Harry, and not the dreamy athletic route that had also been rumored. Here’s the press release:

For a 25-year-old actor with only three years in the movie business, Dane DeHaan has had a remarkable run. Since first appearing on screen opposite Oscar-winner Chris Cooper in John Sayles' Philippine-American war epic "Amigo" in 2010, DeHaan led the critically acclaimed sci-fi sleeper hit "Chronicle"; worked with Derek Cianfrance on his anticipated follow-up to "Blue Valentine," "The Place Beyond the Pines" (it premieres next month in Toronto); acted opposite Reese Witherspoon in Atom Egoyan's next, "Devil's Knot"; and played Lucien Carr, a key member of the Beat Generation, in "Kill Your Darlings," alongside a cast that includes Daniel Radcliffe and Elizabeth Olsen. This is all in addition to his TV work which has seen him make lasting impressions on two HBO shows: "In Treatment" and "True Blood." In his latest to hit theaters, "Lawless" (it opens this Wednesday in select...

John Sayles is still churning out films on a fairly regular basis, and his most recent effort “Amigo” got its limited release in theaters in August last year. Starring Chris Cooper, Garret Dillahunt and Dane DeHaan (“Chronicle”), the film was moderately well received, but grossed a tiny $184k from its release on a maximum of 10 screens. To say it was small would be an understatement. But such is the state of financing these days where guys like Sayles are left on the sidelines. But, keen to keep his fanbase updated with plans for his next film, Sayles has taken to his blog to speak about his upcoming 18th feature.
“Go For Sisters” is its name, and Sayles told readers of his site that he’ll be shooting it this summer and will be updating them with behind-the-scenes pictures and information throughout the process. So that’s what we can look forward to,...

A new TV spot — the third to date, if you're counting — for first-time feature director Josh Trank's upcoming "found footage" movie, Chronicle, recently began airing and it can now be viewed online. Written by Max Landis, the movie applies a real-world perspective to the superhero genre by showing how easily three high school friends — Dane DeHaan (Amigo), Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails) and Alex Russell (The Wheeler Boys) — are tempted to abuse the super powers they developed after coming into contact with a mysterious substance. The latest spot contains new footage of the trio unleashing their newfound abilities on an unsuspecting world to devastating effect.

What would you do if you suddenly had superpowers? In comic books, those that develop superpowers usually try to use them for good, but director Josh Trank's debut movie Chronicle takes a more realistic approach about how real people might react when given the "great responsibility" of superpowers.
In the "found footage" movie, Dane DeHaan (Amigo), Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails) and Alex Russell (The Wheeler Boys) play three high school students who develop superpowers like invulnerability and telekinesis after finding a mysterious substance near an unexplained crater. Two previously released preview clips have shown the boys finding the crater and demonstrating their newfound powers by throwing baseballs at each other, while another showed one (DeHaan) starting to use his powers for destructive means. MTV has released a new clip from the movie which shows the boys in more innocent times, studying telekinesis and then using that same power...

A new French teaser poster for first-time feature director Josh Trank's upcoming "found footage" movie, Chronicle, has turned up online and it is very much in keeping with the style and tone of the two domestic teaser posters that have been released, except that all three of the teenage "superheroes" — played by Dane DeHaan (Amigo), Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails) and Alex Russell (The Wheeler Boys) — are depicted. Additionally, two new preview clips from the movie have been released, one showing the trio investigating the crater/tunnel where they find the mysterious substance that gives them their incredible powers, and the other showing them testing their powers by chucking baseballs at one another.

A new trailer for first-time feature director Josh Trank's "found footage" superhero movie, Chronicle, has been released online, along with a new preview clip. Written by Max Landis, son of director John Landis (Trading Places, Coming to America), the movie follows three high school students — Dane DeHaan (Amigo), Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails) and Alex Russell (The Wheeler Boys) — who develop powers like superhuman strength, telekinesis, flight, and invulnerability after coming into contact with a mysterious substance found in a crater. However, unlike the altruistic heroes of so many recent comic book movies, these teens use their newfound abilities for far more selfish reasons.

It was all the way back in January of 2010 when Twitch first shared a lengthy promo for Filipino hitman thriller Ojt. Director Erik Matti was in the early stages back then, putting together a project loosely based on actual events and as part of that process recruited a pair of actors and a pair of Red cameras for a day to shoot a nearly nine minute proof of concept. And it was simply astounding. It certainly helps that one of the actors was the great Joel Torre - recently seen in John Sayles' Amigo - but it helped even more that Matti seemed to be taking elements of Johnnie To and Fabien Bielinsky and working them into something fresh and exciting. Yeah, Matti's been...

"With great power comes great responsibility," someone not real once said, and it's a lesson the three lead characters in the upcoming indie Chronicle are learning the hard way.
Not based on any comic book whatsoever, Chronicle follows three Pacific Northwest high school students — Dane DeHaan (Amigo), Michael B. Jordan (The Wire, Red Tails) and Alex Russell (The Wheeler Boys) — who make a discovery that grants them superpowers. As they learn how to control them, they also learn that a dark side comes with uncanny abilities.
Shot in a "found footage" style (think Paranormal Activity), the first trailer for Chronicle has just been released, along with a new teaser poster.

Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground "admirably tries, on a minuscule budget, to evoke the spirit of American cinema from 35 years ago: the age of Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall, an era much more hospitable to serious roles for women than the current one." Melissa Anderson in the Voice: "As reported in a New York Times Magazine cover story on the actress in 2006 (three years before her Oscar-nominated performance in Up in the Air), Farmiga has expressed her disgust with the roles offered her by setting scripts on fire: 'I stack up all those crass female characters, all those utterly ordinary women, all those hundreds and hundreds of parts that have no substance or meaning and turn them into a blazing pyre.' It's a shame, then, that Higher Ground never really ignites."

For such a packed weekend, two holdovers ended up topping them all. Tate Taylor‘s The Help moved from second to first place, dropping a miniscule 21.4% for a $20.47m weekend and a $71.8m total. Rise of the Planet of the Apes fell to second and made another $16.3m for a $133m total.
The new releases all stumbled, with Spy Kids: All the Time in the World doing the best in third place, taking $12m. The two remakes of the weekend, Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night bombed quite heavily. The former took $10m off a reported $90m budget and the latter brought in $8.3m, but only had a $30m budget.
Lone Scherfig’s An Education follow-up One Day may have opened in about half as many theaters, but still fell short of expectations with only $5.12m. Glee The 3D Concert Movie continued to do poorly, dropping almost 70% bringing its total to $10.4m.

For his 17th feature film, writer/director John Sayles performs one of his periodic 180 degree shifts. Throughout his 33-year directing career, the gifted chronicler of the histories and familial legacies of small-town Americana (in films such as Lone Star and Honeydripper) has occasionally ventured outside that comfort zone. The Irish-set Secret of Roan Inish and the Spanish language, Latin American-set Men with Guns are among Sayles’s best-reviewed works. In Amigo, his most ambitious film yet, the filmmaker heads to the Philippines, circa 1900, for an old-fashioned yet all-too-resonant portrait of U.S. imperialism run amok. There’s an aesthetic stiffness to certain elements of Sayles’s picture, which concerns the drama that plays out in a fictional village during the Philippine-American war. The camerawork is stately and largely of the front-and-center medium shot variety, while the limited, spare jungle setting exudes a sort of abstract theatricality. It’s not always the most vibrant enterprise as it charts...
