7 years ago, the whole world was amazed by the story about a group of robbers who were implementing a multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. Later Money Heist became the most-watched non-English-language series on Netflix, proving that people’s interest in heist flicks and exploration of criminals’ minds is never-ending.
The platform’s new project goes further in this respect, as instead of depicting fictional robbers it will focus on a real-life bandit, even though his crimes were cinematic and spectacular enough to be developed by Netflix’s screenwriters.
Back in the 1990s, there was a drug dealer who was always striving for more than his business was making for him. After seeing Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves’ Point Break (1991), a crime film that followed the exploits of the bank robbers’ leader, he came up with an idea to make money any other way.

Alicia Keys was doing a meditation Tuesday morning to try to stay calm amid some nerves ahead of the Tony nominations announcement.
After finishing the meditation, Keys said she received a call, alerting her to the fact that Hell’s Kitchen, the semi-autobiographical musical for which she wrote the score and arranged the music, had been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including best musical. And that’s when she lost her cool.
“I kind of lost it, kind of freaked out, and I was super excited, particularly that all of the collaborators on this project are seeing so much love and so much greatness for their brilliance. I’m so excited for everybody and for Hell’s Kitchen. It’s just like, “Whoa!,” Keys said.
Keys has been working on this project for 13 years, with collaborators including book writer Kristoffer Diaz, director Michael Greif and choreographer Camille A Brown, and an Off-Broadway run in the fall.

“It’s not just about setting time and space, but it’s also about the dancers being time and being space,” explains Camille A. Brown of her work on “Hell’s Kitchen.” The choreographer found that the 1990s setting of the script, combined with music from Alicia Keys, allowed her to explore movement from multiple entry points. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Hell’s Kitchen” tells the story of Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), loosely adapted from Keys’ own coming-of-age journey in New York City. She lives in Manhattan Plaza, an artist residence in Hell’s Kitchen, under the eye of her over-protective mother (Shoshana Bean). Ali longs to dive into the beating heart of the city and live on her own terms. A chance encounter with a pianist in the building (Kecia Lewis) sets her on a path of self-discovery.

As we wait for Disney and Marvel to usher in a new era of X-Men-related film content, questions about who could play the iconic mutants continue to burn in fans’ minds. For several years, fan casts for the part of Wolverine have run rampant online, with everyone from Jared Kesso to Daniel Radcliffe and Taron Egerton floated as someone to play the adamantium-clawed Canadian hero. But what about Professor Charles Xavier? The mutant mentalist is one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. After Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy’s performances, playing the bald father figure to many mutants will take someone extraordinary. How about Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian, and Kaleidoscope actor Giancarlo Esposito?
Speaking with Amon Warmann from the Fade to Black podcast, Giancarlo Esposito says it’d be great to play Professor X in an X-Men project, though he’d like to change an aspect of the character’s mobility.

The Beatles‘ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is one of the most mysterious-sounding songs in rock history. Paul McCartney explained one of its secrets to Taylor Swift. Notably, Paul’s approach to writing the track wasn’t that different from the way Swift pens some of her music. John Lennon refuted a misconception about the tune.

In a 2020 Rolling Stone, Swift and Paul interviewed each other. Swift revealed she decided to use her favorite words in her songs, even if they weren’t radio-friendly. Some of these words included “marzipan,” “divorcée,” “elegies,” and “epiphany.” She said she had lists and lists of her favorite words. In somewhat of an odd year for television, one genre remained a consistent force through it all: heist shows. Just as 2023 began with the release of Netflix's inventive anthology Kaleidoscope on January 1, the year closes with the long-awaited premiere of Berlin, a prequel to Spanish hit Money Heist, on December 29. The intervening months brought the arrival of several other shows about armed robberies — planned and accidental; successful and foiled — and the criminals behind them, and though some failed to leave a lasting impression, the best of these series blended crime drama conventions with a fresh perspective, whether via nonlinear storytelling, social commentary, or a surprising romantic element.

Netflix’s release of viewing data for virtually its entire library provided the broadest public glimpse to date into the performance of movies and TV series on a streaming service. It could also prove to be a boon to the people who do business with the company.
The streamer on Dec. 12 put out a list of every movie, special and season of TV that drew at least 50,000 hours of viewing worldwide between January and June of 2023 and said it plans to issue similar semiannual reports in the future (with potentially less lag between the end of the reporting period and the release of data). Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told reporters the company has been on a “continuum” of becoming more transparent with data in the past couple of years — even as he insisted that it shares “much more detailed information” with creators.

Abstract art plays a featured role in the first few episodes of Hulu’s new heist drama Culprits. A Rothko exhibit is the site of an early meeting between two aspiring criminals, and the artist’s canvases are a topic of conversation. A later episode walks through a full room of striking works, a Mondrian here, a Kandinsky there. Nobody discusses the paintings this time, but London is full of places to hold meetings, so this interest on series creator J Blakeson’s part feels more than incidental.
Like many things in Culprits, however, the eye for 20th-century masterworks ends up being more of a red herring than a fascination with substance, a burst of color or geometry to attract the eye more than a point of thematic resonance. Despite a fragmented narrative and a couple of interesting characters, very little in Culprits feels all that modern and nothing so much as flirts with abstraction.

Chappell Roan was getting ready to perform in London this summer when one of the drag queens she’d picked to open her show told her: “You’re a drag queen. You know that, right?” Those words led to an immediate epiphany for the singer. She realized her stage name, the costumes, the makeup… all of it was her own version of drag. “I was like, ‘Oh my god. That’s what this is,’” she recalls, pointing out her shaved-off eyebrows. “I just happen to perform drag to my own songs.

Jennifer Reeder's "Perpetrator" is a spiritual successor to 2019's John Waters-y, super-sensory-heightened debut "Knives and Skin," serving vibes as a main course. That's not entirely a damning accusation. Reeder's style provokes delirium and allows her characters to float through hallucinogenic universes, which the filmmaker somehow controls. "Perpetrator" feels indebted to everything from high school humor in "Clueless" to body horror yuckiness in "Society" to uniquely pubescent terror in "Teeth" — a tonal collision that some won't survive, and others will slurp down like Four Lokos at an underage pregame.

Jane Birkin graced the front pages of most French newspapers on Monday as France mourned the death of the late British actress and singer who enjoyed icon status in the country that she had called home since the late 1960s.
“Our tears can’t change anything,” proclaimed Le Parisien newspaper, which first broke the news of Birkin’s death at the age of 76 on Sunday.
Libération ran with the simple headline “Without Jane”, while regional newspaper Le Maine Libre referred to the late actress as “The Eternal English Bride of France”.
International obituaries have highlighted Birkin’s notorious performance with partner and late bad boy of French pop music Serge Gainsbourg on the 1968 pop song, ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, or the fact she inspired the Hermès Birkin bag.
For the French, she was much more.

The saying “90 percent of directing is casting” has been attributed to everyone from John Ford to Robert Altman to Martin Scorsese, but in the case of Netflix’s much-buzzed-about romantic political drama “The Diplomat,” you might even be able to crank that number to 95, especially as casting director Julie Schubert tells it, getting your first-choice leads is the ultimate Hail Mary pass.
“Keri Russell was on the very first list,” says Schubert, who can barely contain her enthusiasm for the versatile actress. “She is truly one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet in your entire life. And one of the hardest working people you will ever meet in your entire life. She’s top to bottom: pure joy.”
As written, Ambassador Kate Wyler checks a lot of boxes for Russell’s abilities, but for the role of Kate’s roguish, charismatic, upward climbing husband-with-benefits Hal, there’s...

The American population is growing more diverse every day. By 2060, less than 45% of the total population in the United States will be white, and content providers like streaming services and broadcast networks have to reflect the diverse makeup of the populace in order to remain relevant.
New data from omniscreen data and measurement company Samba TV shows which groups are currently seeing the most representation, and on which platforms. It found that Black, Asian and Hispanic audiences were more likely to watch content that featured diverse casts, but that providers still have work to do when it comes to representation, especially for Hispanic and Asian viewers.
Across linear and streaming sources, only 10% of lead actors in shows and movies were Hispanic. The 2020 Census indicates that 18% of the U.S. population identifies as Hispanic currently, which means Hispanic viewers are underrepresented on the screen. Ed Sheeran’s –, pronounced “subtract,” is, as its title suggests, an album defined by absence, primarily as it relates to the scant amount of backing percussion or electric amplification throughout, but also in regard to its total lack of commercial sheen. Save for some radio fodder like the Max Martin and Shellback-helmed “Eyes Closed,” the English singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album hardly feels like it’s taking a major stab at pop virality.

The inaugural event will be hosted by The Last of Us star Merle Dandridge and held on March 21 at L.A.’s The Ebell, an educational and philanthropic organization founded by women for women in 1894.
“We were shocked (but not entirely surprised) that there has never been an event during Women’s History Month celebrating Api women and nonbinary individuals in entertainment,” Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape’s executive director,...

CBS News Radio will mark the 85th anniversary of the groundbreaking radio program World News Roundup, with special programming throughout the day on Monday, March 13, 2023. “World News Roundup” is the nation’s longest-running news broadcast.
When it launched on March 13, 1938, World News Roundup changed broadcasting forever by being the first program to feature correspondents stationed around the globe reporting for one live broadcast. The first broadcast was anchored by Robert Trout and featured reporting by Edward R. Murrow, then a CBS executive, making his debut reporting on the show from Vienna. Hitler's German army was invading Austria and becoming a growing threat to all of Europe. This was the first comprehensive broadcast that linked America with a world careening toward war.
Today, Steve Kathan is the anchor of World News Roundup, and Jennifer Keiper anchors “World News Roundup Late Edition.” The broadcasts are heard on 156 CBS News Radio affiliates around...

It looks like Zac isn’t the only half of #Zatima with tiny skeletons in his closet.
Last week’s episode of Tyler Perry’s Sistas (March 1) threw viewers for a loop by introducing a man who claimed to be — wait for it — the father of Fatima’s son. But he could have been lying, right? That’s certainly the answer Zac was hoping for when he awkwardly grilled the mystery man this week (March 8).

David Lindley, the dexterous and elfin multi-instrumentalist who died yesterday at the age of 78, could delight in sharing a few tales about his days on the road with Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and the other leading troubadours and songwriters he backed during the Seventies and Eighties. There was the time, he told me in 2013, that he saw one of them talking up a backstage female visitor. Lindley grabbed a bottle of apple juice, went over to his boss and told him his urine sample was ready. Needles to say, the...

“Grey’s Anatomy,” which in last week’s episode said goodbye-ish to Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, will say hello to the actor William Martinez in the March 2 episode this week. In a recurring role, Martinez will make his debut as Trey, a character who’s an important figure from Simone’s (Alexis Floyd) past.
In last week’s episode, Simone, one of Season 19’s new class of surgical interns, entered into a situationship with Lucas (Niko Terho). Their courtship is complicated, though, by the fact that they’re now both living in Meredith’s old house, along with fellow intern Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) — fixing it up after a fire nearly destroyed it. Trey will be coming along to make that incipient romance even knottier, presumably.
In the logline for this week’s episode, furnished by ABC, the Trey character is alluded to. “Teddy makes a challenging decision,” it reads.
