Over 50,000 Italian soldiers were held as prisoners in the USA during the war. Unlike their German counterparts, they were eventually allowed to work outside the camps.

Not all Italian soldiers were fascists. Viscomi was in a "King's Soldier" division, who were loyal to Victor Emmanuel, the King of Italy, and not Mussolini.
