In the first scene, Shawn arrives to the movie and Gus scolds him for showing up late as he's "missed a third of the movie." The movie they are seeing is Psycho (1960) and in it's original release, the director, Alfred Hitchcock, created an advertisement campaign that informed prospective viewers that it was "required that you see PSYCHO from the very beginning" and warned them that theaters were instructed to not admit anyone that arrived after the film had begun. Shawn's late arrival could be a nod to this campaign. Prior to this film, movies ran on a loop with patrons dropping in at any point. This film changed the industry and introduced start times.

Goofs
The calendar on Shawn's desk says that it is February. However as Shawn and Gus are driving to Mary's the leaves have changed colors and are falling which implies that it is fall.

Quotes
Mary: [holds up Yang's book] I'm assuming you've read this?
Shawn Spencer: Are you kidding? We're in it. If I'm not mistaken, and I am paraphrasing here, I am introduced on page eleven as a "thick-tufted boy genius who ice skates through life on polished blades of snarky eloquence."
