Aging action legend Jackie Chan galloped away with another win as his latest action-comedy film Ride On maintained its grip on the top spot of the Chinese box office for the second consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie struggled to keep up, finishing the frame in fourth place.
According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, Ride On earned $6 million (RMB41.5 million) for the weekend, representing a respectable 48 percent week-on-week drop from its $11.7 million opening the week prior. The film has already amassed $22.6 million in ticket sales since its release April 7. Ticketing app Maoyan projects a $33 million (RMB230 million) career total for the title.
Coming in second place was iQiyi Pictures’ Hachiko, which added $4.9 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $35.1 million since its release March 31. The film, which is based on the classic Japanese story of a loyal dog who waits for his owner every day at the train station,...

When beloved filmmaker Lynn Shelton unexpectedly passed away earlier this year, her tight-knit communities rallied together to find a way to honor her legacy in a way that felt appropriate for the big-hearted creator. In July, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum and Duplass Brothers Productions announced their solution: the launch of the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant. The $25,000 unrestricted cash grant will be awarded each year to a U.S.-based woman or non-binary filmmaker, age 39 or older, who has yet to direct a narrative feature.
Less than four months later, the selection committee has chosen their inaugural winner: Keisha Rae Witherspoon, a Caribbean-American filmmaker based in Miami. Per the official announcement, “Witherspoon’s work is driven by interests in science, speculative fiction, and fantasy, as well as documenting the unseen and unheralded nuances of diasporic peoples.”

Adapted from the bestselling novel from British writer S J Watson the movie stars Kidman (below) as an amnesiac who wakes each morning without any memory of her life up to that point and eventually discovers that the man sleeping next to her is not actually her husband. The project also stars Colin Firth ('The King's Speech'), Mark Strong ('Kick-Ass'), and Jing Lusi ('Clash of Empires')....

Readers were so touched by the Oregon couple's love story - their wedding plans were put on indefinite hold in March 2010 after a drunk driver plowed into Ragsdale's car as he was on his way to propose - she met her goal (to raise $20,000) in just 11 days. It turns out getting the full Disney wedding experience costs more than that, so a group of former Disney brides who befriended Kelcie after her story went...

Former football player Larry Ragsdale's proposal to his high high school sweetheart, Kelcie Yeoman, almost never happened. He was nearly killed by a drunk driver four years ago. Ragsdale, 20, was a star athlete for his high school. He played football, ran track and was even featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" list. His girlfriend, Kelcie, cheered him on every step of the way and he was ready to make her his wife. Ragsdale bought her a ring and was planning to propose while on vacation to Disneyland with her family. The vacation, however, never happened. On March 10, 2010, while driving in Monroe,...

In contrast to her Knocked Up co-star Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl has not followed up Judd Apatow‘s hit comedy as well. The projects she stars in seem to get worse and worse, with romantic “comedies” such as The Ugly Truth and Killers, in addition to the laughably bad One For the Money this year, Heigl’s career is in desperate need of a revival. Although it has admittedly only been 5 years since the Judd Apatow romantic comedy stole our hearts, Rogen‘s film choices have been infinitely better than hers since, and it doesn’t take long for a star to get lost in the crowd in Hollywood. Perhaps with the bad taste of her recent decisions in mind, the star has opted to join two projects with significantly darker tones than her normal work.

Another day, another thriller about prosopagnosia.
French writer-director Julien Magnat's 2011 straight-to-dvd indie thriller Faces in the Crowd dealt with the disorder, which causes "face blindness" or the inability to recognize faces, in a story that saw Milla Jovovich stalked by a serial killer after suffering from a head injury. Katherine Heigl is the latest actress to have the affliction in the similarly plotted Face Blind.
Deadline reports that Heigl will produce and star in the movie, where she will play a psychologist who is struck with the affliction and finds herself stalked by the man who terrorized one of her patients. See how Face Blind is different from Faces in the Crowd? Jovovich played a schoolteacher, not a psychologist.

Katherine Heigl Struck With Rare Disorder: No, unfortunately Katherine Heigl hasn't come down with a rare disorder that will stop her from making movies, but she's signed on to play a woman who has one, so that should at least keep her away from rom coms for a little bit. The disorder in question is called face blindness, and it means the afflicted cannot internally associate a person's face, which is super inconvenient if you're trying to figure out who is stalking you. And if that plot sounds familiar, that's because a (rather boring) Milla Jovovich film called Faces in the Crowd (pictured above) with a nearly identical conceit went straight to DVD a few weeks ago. Tom Hanks Gains a Wife: Well, a movie wife, that is. Catherine...

The delightful 'Grey's Anatomy' star Katherine Heigl is lining up a new prosopagnosian thriller. Hottie Heigl -below ('Valentine', 'Knocked Up') will star and produce 'Face Blind'. Prosopagnosia (Aka face blindness), of course, is a brain disorder relating to face perception which means the sufferer cannot remember people's faces. Heigl will play a psychologist who is stalked by a man who also did the same to one of her patients but struggles to remember his face, obviously. It's sadly not as fresh as it sounds as most of you may recall Julien Magnat's 'Faces in the Crowd' crime thriller from last year starring Milla Jovovich - which is almost a carbon plot to this one. So my question is, why? The hunt is on for a suitable director at a loose end...

Er, can you say Faces in the Crowd? I know Hollywood can run out of ideas sometimes, but seriously, a Remake of a film that only came out last year? Last year, Milla Jovovich starred in Faces in the Crowd, a direct-to-dvd thriller that nobody saw. In the movie, Jovovich's character is attacked by a serial killer and left with a rare psychological condition that prevents her from recognizing faces. This, of course, becomes a problem when she can't identify her attacker and he comes after her to finish the job. That film only debuted on home video in October, but apparently that's more than enough time for the folks behind Katherine Heigl's next project. Deadline is reporting that Heigl is now attached to star in Face Blind, a movie with almost the exact same plot as Faces in the Crowd. Like Jovovich's character, Heigl is also stricken with the affliction - which, in medical terms, is called Prosopagnosia - only in this film she is a psychologist being stalked by one of her crazy patients. While she knows...

It’s like the dueling killer asteroid movies all over again. Well, not quite. A scant year after Milla Jovovich came out with the serial killer thriller “Faces in the Crowd”, Katherine Heigl has now signed on to star in the similarly themed “Face Blind”. In “Faces in the Crowd”, which for all intents and purposes went straight-to-dvd last year, “Resident Evil’s” Milla Jovovich played a woman who is attacked by a serial killer, leaving her with a disease that prevents her from recognizing faces. A problem, since that same serial killer comes back for her, believing she had seen his face. What’s a girl to do? In “Face Blind”, Heigl would play “a psychologist struck with a rare affliction that makes it impossible to distinguish people by their faces.” A problem, since she’s currently being stalked by a man who had previously stalked one of her patients.

Remember that Milla Jovovich flick Faces in the Crowd? No? That could be because it sucked, but in any event a new flick is on its way with kind of a similar storyline. Could this one get it right?
According to Deadline Katherine Heigl (pictured right) will star in Face Blind, an independent thriller about a psychologist struck with a rare affliction that makes it impossible to distinguish people by their faces.
When a man who terrorized her most vulnerable patient stalks her, the psychologist can’t recognize him, and her husband thinks she’s the one who is going crazy.
Heigl will produce with Maven Pictures’ partners Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray. Scripted by Dominic Harari and Teresa De Pelegri, the film’s in the vein of The Others.

★★☆☆☆ With an increasingly multitudinous selection of film releases each week, it takes something special to make a movie stand out from the rest. However, as with the aptly named Faces in the Crowd (2011), many are just bland and indecipherable. This new thriller starring Milla Jovovich is the debut feature from Oscar-nominated writer/director Julien Magnat - though don't hold your breath on him repeating that accolade anytime soon.

Well I’ve already done my Top Ten movies of last year, including a few honorable mentions, so now it’s only fair and proper that I present my bottom ten films of 2011, that is the worst films I personally saw last year… Be they kids movies, mainstream comedies or Hollywood blockbusters, I think there’s at least a few films in this list we can all agree on. Oh, and they are in no particular order. Consider them as bad as each other.

The pressure is mounting during the waning days of "The X Factor." And just as the singers up their game, the behind the scenes stories get more interesting too.
Here the best of what happened when the cameras stopped rolling:
The Boo Birds are back: Rachel Crow fans have not yet forgiven Nicole Scherzinger for her voting gaffe that sent the 13-year-old home. How do we know? During the introduction of the judges, Scherzinger heard it from the crowd, loudly.
Wait. Where is that disembodied voice coming from? Marcus Canty began his performance of the Boyz II Men song "I'll Make Love To You" while standing directly behind Simon Cowell. The only person who seemed unaware of this was Cowell, who looked around and couldn't figure out where the singing came from. After a moment it all made sense. Cowell hated it anyway.

With a title as generic as “Faces in the Crowd”, and a generic poster that you’ve seen a dozen times—yeah, no movie has ever had a poster with a picture of a face in a broken mirror—it is no wonder that the finished product is, you guessed it, generic. One thing that “Faces in the Crowd” does have going for it that most terrible thrillers don’t, is that it is really goddamn funny. I’m not kidding, it’s super hilarious, one of the funnier movies I’ve seen in a while, and takes itself so seriously that you can’t help but burst out laughing in moments of supposedly heightened tension. You know how sometimes, especially with low-budget horror, you get the feeling that writers went through a medical text book looking for obscure diseases, infections, and afflictions that haven’t been turned into a movie yet,...

Pick Of The Week
Franklin & Bash: Season 1 (DVD)
When Peter Bash (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Jared Franklin (Breckin Meyer), two young attorneys with a no-holds-barred courtroom style, are hired by Stanton Infeld (Malcolm McDowell), life at his buttoned-down law firm will never be the same. Working with their equally oddball staff – researcher Pindar Singh (Kumail Nanjiani) and paralegal Carmen Phillips (Dana Davis) – Franklin and Bash shake things up at the firm with their audacious tactics and immediately find an enemy in its star lawyer, Infeld’s nephew Damien Karp (Reed Diamond). While the sexual tension between Jared and senior partner Hanna Linden...

A few days ago we brought you the very first bit of artwork for the upcoming horror flick 13 Eerie which features one hell of a snarling creature staring at you. Today we have another look at the beast!
From the Press Release
An epic battle of the undead is under way in the Canadian prairie province of Saskatchewan. Production on the feature length zombie flick 13 Eerie began earlier this week in Moose Jaw, Canada.
Six ambitious forensic undergrads are marooned on a remote island during a university field project. Unbeknownst to the group, the site was formerly used as an illegal biological testing ground for life-term criminals left for dead. But they aren't. They're undead.
The living cast includes Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) in the role of Megan, Michael Shanks (Stargate, Burn Notice, Smallville) in the role of Professor Tomkins, Brendan Fletcher (The Pacific, Freddy vs Jason) cast as Josh...

Milla Jovovich gets a bad rap for a supermodel turned actress. When a director has a firm handle on her admittedly narrow range, she can convey a reasonable set of emotions at least as well as far less derided actresses (Scarlett Johannsson for instance). What she's not so good at is picking projects that have a firm grasp on what appropriate human responses are, making her come off as some kind of brain-dead automaton. To that pile, you can add Faces in the Crowd, a thriller with Memento aspirations, but held back by a somewhat dim understanding of what makes for compelling suspense.

Faces In The Crowd
Stars: Milla Jovovich, Sarah Wayne Callies, Julian McMahon, Michael Shanks, Marianne Faithfull | Written and Directed by Julien Magnat
Giallo wannabe Faces in the Crowd stars Milla Jovovich – for once taking a break from either a) killing zombies and b) working with her husband – as Anna Marchant, a woman who witnesses a murder by the serial killer dubbed Tearjerker Jack. When Jack turns on Anna she manages to escape by falling off a bridge and banging her head – an injury which causes her to come down with a case of prosopagnosia, aka ”face-blindness.” Which means Anna cannot recognise her attacker, her husband, her friends, or anyone else for that matter, thanks to her new found inability to remember or identify faces…

In the new thriller Faces in the Crowd, Milla Jovovich plays the only woman to see the face of a serial killer who is murdering his way through the city. Unfortunately, she suffers from face-blindness, meaning that her ability to recognize her boyfriend is suspect, not to mention her skill at finding a killer in an urban haystack. In this exclusive clip, Jovovich’s character hits the police department after being attacked on a bridge by the madman, only to be received by a gruff detective played by 150% of Julian McMahon and a frazzled assistant who can’t seem to adlib a solid exit line. What’s funny is that you can either watch the clip right here and now, or simply watch the scene as part of the entire film which is available right now on Netflix streaming. Or you can do both: Planning on seeing it?...

Jurassic Park Trilogy Although I probably wouldn't personally buy it, the Jurassic Park Trilogy is undoubtedly today's big item and I will say Universal has put together a great package for those of you that really want it. The films look amazing, but most of all the sound is out of this world. Additionally there's a really good 2+ hour making of feature that spans all three discs with a lot of attention paid to the effects and advancement in visual effects Jurassic Park is responsible for. It serves as a great reminder how much of an effect this film had on the making of movies. Strangely you could credit (or blame) this film for the abundance of CGI in films nowadays.
Attack the Block If I were to recommend a new release in today's bunch I would point here.

Faces in the Crowd is a thriller destined for a straight-to-video release in late October. This film stars actresses Milla Jovovich and Sarah Wayne Callies in a tale of prosopagnosia. What is prosopagnosia you ask? This is a condition caused by damage to the occipital or temporal lobe that leaves the affected with an inability to remember or identify faces. This is an interesting plot device that leaves Anna unable to point a finger at a killer, who she has just witnessed kill an innocent young woman. The rest of the film revolves around this device while the film bounces back and forth in genres, between thriller and romance. The end result is an average film that is remarkably ridiculous in the final moments.
Anna is walking home from a late night club when a pair of voices draw her attention.

By about fourth year of university, I was more than a little sick of the psychological condition known to textbooks as prosopagnosia. Good thing then, that Julien Magnat has decided to cut out all the boring bits, rename it “face blindness” and give Milla Jovovich yet another memory problem.
After losing her memory in Resident Evil and, well, whatever the Hell happened in Fifth Element (it’s been so long!), Jovovich is set to lose her ability to distinguish between human faces in new thriller Faces in the Crowd (via Bloody Disgusting).

While most moviegoers won't be too familiar with prosopagnosia, or "face blindness," French writer/director Julien Magnat is, and utilizes the disorder as the key element in his upcoming thriller, Faces in the Crowd (amnesia would have been far too easy).
The movie stars Milla Jovovich as the victim of a serial killer's attack, but who sustains a cranial injury that triggers her inability to recognize anyone's face. While she deals with the issue, the killer begins to track her down and could be anyone she meets.
While the movie has no official release date yet, it does have a new, international trailer to promote the movie, which is likely to get a release date soon.

She saw the killer's face, but it keeps changing... I promise you that's the tagline - right off of this poster! A new trailer hit the web today via Bloody-Disgusting for a horror-thriller film called Faces in the Crowd, starring actress Milla Jovovich as a woman with "face-blindness" who loses recognition of faces. This is pretty trippy, but unfortunately looks like made-for-SyFy cheap crap, which explains why we haven't really heard of it before now. When she isn’t starring in Paul W.S. Anderson action flicks, Milla Jovovich dabbles in more interesting projects here and there. Most recently she was part of the overlooked Stone, as well as the highly underrated A Perfect Getaway. We’ll just forget about the horrendous The Fourth Kind and jump right to her upcoming film, Faces in the Crowd. We have the first trailer for Julien Magnat‘s thriller also starring Julian McMahon, Sarah Wayne Callies, Michael Shanks, Sandrine Holt, Marianne Faithfull and Valentina Vargas.
The concept of face blindness the film brings up reminded me of an excellent Radiolab episode titled Strangers in the Mirror. It is a fascinating story that should serve as a nice counterpart to this drama. Check out the new trailer below via Dread Central and I’ve embedded the Radiolab episode as well underneath.

[1] A new international trailer has dropped for Julien Magnat's Faces in the Crowd, starring Milla Jovovich as an elementary school teacher with the misfortune to witness a serial killer's latest attack. Though she survives the incident, she sustains an injury that renders her completely unable to remember faces -- even those of her dearest loved ones. With Detective Kerrest (Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon) on her side, Jovovich's character must find a way to recognize the killer before he finds her. Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), Michael Shanks (Stargate Sg-1), and Marianne Faithfull also star. Watch the trailer after the jump.
