Neill Blomkamp's Elysium is streaming on Netflix starting Apr. 1. This gritty dystopian sci-fi starred Matt Damon as its brutish, reluctant hero, which was then a departure from his prior roles. Exploring difficult themes about social class and immigration, Elysium echoed the themes of District 9, Blomkamp's debut effort. Critics considered the latter the better film in terms of structure and execution, however, and Blomkamp has since expressed a desire to redo Elysium. It barely broke even at the box office, earning $286 million against its $115 million budget.

The first three Karate Kid movies will be moving on as well. This is bad timing, as there will be a "new" Karate Kid flick coming to theaters in May. That one will star Ralph Macchio (of course) and Jackie Chan and is titled Karate Kids: Legends. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.

The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.

According to a new report, Neill Blomkamp has set up a new Starship Troopers project at Sony. The director of District 9, one of the greatest science fiction films of the 2000s, is reportedly writing and directing the film, which will of course follow in the footsteps of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie of the same name. However, according to the report over at Deadline, the film isn’t a remake of Verhoeven’s film and will instead hew closer to Robert A Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.

While Verhoeven’s sci-fi action film didn’t set the box office alight on its release, its blend of enjoyable cheesiness, nail-biting action and satirical take on neo-conservatism and the military industrial complex eventually found an audience on the growing home format market.

The tale was originally brought to screens in 1997 by Paul Verhoeven, exploring the conflict between a futuristic space-faring and highly-propagandized militaristic society and a race of insectoid aliens. A cult-classic thanks to its VFX, action and over-the-top satirical exploration of fascism and propaganda, Starship Troopers has grown in appreciation, influence, and relevance with time.

Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.

While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

The science fiction horror film Pandorum dramatically failed both critically and commercially. Receiving almost universally negative reviews and losing money at the box office, the movie even led to the bankruptcy of the company that distributed it. Though initially planned as a franchise, its poor performance put an end to the idea, and it was quickly forgotten by audiences. Over a decade later, however, Pandorum remains far better than reviews suggest and deserves a chance from any fans of gritty science fiction or horror.

Exclusive: Faran Tahir will appear in the Paul Bettany-led series Vision Quest, a WandaVision spinoff series for Disney+, sources confirm to Deadline.

Tahir will reprise the role of the villainous Raza, leader of the terrorist organization the 10 Rings who tried to kill Tony Stark in Iron Man.

Details are scarce on the new project, but as we previously reported, the Marvel Vision spinoff has been in development at Disney+ since 2022 and was picked up to series in May. It is believed to be centered on Vision (Bettany) as he tries to regain his memory and humanity. After Thanos killed him in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, Vision returned in 2021’s WandaVision.

In addition to Bettany returning to the role he has played in three Marvel films and in WandaVision, James Spader will reprise his MCU role of Ultron. Todd Stashwick will also appear in an undisclosed role.

May the Force be with Simon Kinberg, who’s recently signed a deal with Lucasfilm to write and produce a new Star Wars trilogy. Kinberg’s writing credits include the screenplay for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, 2015’s Fantastic Four, and multiple films in Fox’s X-Men franchise, including X-Men 3: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. He’ll produce the new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm alongside the studio’s chief, Kathleen Kennedy.

According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy involves episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga. However, insiders say Kinberg aims to launch a new saga that goes hand in hand with developing Star Wars projects from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Lucasfilm remains tight-lipped on the matter, which doesn’t surprise me after I saw their security measures when I visited Industrial Light & Magic last month.

Despite this, – and I’m ashamed to admit it, – I’ve never actually finished the game. But there is something to be said of the kind of magic that, without having the chance to reveal itself, lingers. Like a sweet and longing aftertaste. Like a craving you can’t place.

Disco Elysium is able to masterfully capture the absurdity of complex topics, like addiction, and explore the contrast between the internal and external world. There is a quest where your necktie begs you buy formaldehyde from a random man in a gutter, insisting that this is your endgame, this is everything you’ve ever worked towards.

Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.

The last project on that list may yet happen, some day.
