In this futuristic setting, players control an android known as a Blader, driven by a mission to reestablish order amid a landscape of decay and unexpected beauty. The game builds its experience on familiar Soulslike principles while experimenting with its own configurations, creating a system where combat and narrative influence one another in clear, calculated ways.
The artwork surprises with its bright, animated character designs set against drab, oppressive ruins—a choice that adds a surprising lightness to a story steeped in themes of technological conflict and survival.
The gameplay offers a practical mix of aggressive strikes and tactical retreats, where the Sync Rate system forces the player to consider each encounter with care. Branch checkpoints serve not only as safe havens but also as markers of progress and transformation,...

It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

The turnover rate for genre titles on Netflix is rapid. A ton of genre favorites have appeared on the streamer over the last few months. But, as quickly as they appeared, they’ve disappeared, giving us only a few months to check them off our watchlist. That’s why I wanted to highlight a few movies I’m not ready to see leave Netflix. I’m making it my business to stream these titles one last time because we never know when we’ll see them again in these streaming streets. These four films prove not all reboots suck, remind us that sometimes terror is where the heart is, and encourage us not to take ourselves too seriously.

Every month, Netflix has to purge some of its catalog and make room for new arrivals. Still, the first week of April 2025 is rough. If you wanted to catch many of the films below, you have two days left.
There is no way to binge-watch everything that is leaving. That is true even if you line up several TVs and your computer(s) next to each other and play different things at once. Don't do that because that would be weird (or would it?).
Several franchises are leaving on day one of the month. The excellent Rush Hour films and early Karate Kid movies are gone, as are several animated movies that are worth watching. Here is everything that is leaving in the first week of the month, though.

Throughout its ups and downs, Mythic Quest always brought a lighthearted spin to a traditionally-heavily-stressful work environment. In spite of crunch, coding sprints, personnel turnover, and Hr conflicts, they always managed to eek out the next big thing, from the original Mq launch to the later success of their game-building software, PlayPen, a clear reference to the modern Roblox, to Ian and Poppy's innovative expansion "Elysium" to cap off season 4.
We have watched this ragtag team struggle with age, identity, community, and work-life balance, exploring these concepts as they arise within a fast-paced technical industry which is often as white as it is male. While the finale left a handful of dangling threads, the show would feel long and drawn out if it were to be renewed, storylines that have been in the works for years are pretty much all tied up.

Matt Damon confirmed he was cast in 2013's Elysium after Eminem turned down the role. The film proved Damon could play the anti-hero after helming action thrillers like The Bourne trilogy and The Green Zone.
Neill Blomkamp's Elysium is streaming on Netflix starting Apr. 1. This gritty dystopian sci-fi starred Matt Damon as its brutish, reluctant hero, which was then a departure from his prior roles. Exploring difficult themes about social class and immigration, Elysium echoed the themes of District 9, Blomkamp's debut effort. Critics considered the latter the better film in terms of structure and execution, however, and Blomkamp has since expressed a desire to redo Elysium. It barely broke even at the box office, earning $286 million against its $115 million budget.
"I feel like, ultimately, the story is not the right story," Blomkomp told Uproxx in 2015. Elysium imagines a dark, far future, where the masses barely survive on Earth...

March has been fun for Netflix and will end with some fine additions. But be prepared. April is going to see a lot of changes. In other words, get ready to watch a lot of stuff quickly.
41 movies alone will be leaving Netflix at the beginning of next month. If you love such franchises as Rush Hour, you might want to binge-watch the first three films over the next week. Those will be leaving your favorite streamer on the first day of April.
The first three Karate Kid movies will be moving on as well. This is bad timing, as there will be a "new" Karate Kid flick coming to theaters in May. That one will star Ralph Macchio (of course) and Jackie Chan and is titled Karate Kids: Legends. The best scenario would be to see the previous films on Netflix before there is a theatrical release of a new addition to the series.

“Starship Troopers” are back. And they’ve found the man to lead them into battle.
Neill Blomkamp has been hired by Columbia Pictures to write and direct a new version of the story, this time going back to the original story by Robert A. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.
The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.
“Starship Troopers” had been adapted once before, in 1997, by “RoboCop” director Paul Verhoeven and writer Edward Neumeier for TriStar Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. That version leaned into the political satire, full of fascistic imagery and jingoistic propagandizing. That hard R-rated film starred Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico,...

Just days ahead of Digicon 2025, Bandai is revealed to have laid claim to a new trademark that is generating excitement about a possible new installment to the franchise in light of the promise made that the company would focus on Digimonthis coming year. Digimon Alysion was confirmed to be added to the public register, cementing that there may be a new anime or another game to be featured sometime soon.
This is just another thrilling addition to what has already been quite a busy week for the dormant series as it leads up to March 19th/20th, when Digicon will officially announce some of the projects Bandai clearly has planned. Just a few days prior, a trailer teasing a possible Digimon card game was circulating online, promising to reveal more details at said convention. A new take on Starship Troopers is happening at Sony, with District 9 and Elysium filmmaker Neill Blomkamp set to direct.
According to a new report, Neill Blomkamp has set up a new Starship Troopers project at Sony. The director of District 9, one of the greatest science fiction films of the 2000s, is reportedly writing and directing the film, which will of course follow in the footsteps of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie of the same name. However, according to the report over at Deadline, the film isn’t a remake of Verhoeven’s film and will instead hew closer to Robert A Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.
While Verhoeven’s sci-fi action film didn’t set the box office alight on its release, its blend of enjoyable cheesiness, nail-biting action and satirical take on neo-conservatism and the military industrial complex eventually found an audience on the growing home format market.

When it comes to physical media, there always has to be a concern for degradation. We saw it with VHS, Cassette Tapes, and Laser Discs. Eventually they become unwatchable. DVD was supposed to fix that issue, giving us the same experience each time, and with a much longer shelf life than laser discs (which are currently dropping like flies). And judging on Bumbray’s article about Warner Bros titles, the issue is as present as ever. But those are DVDs. That’s two whole generations ago and there’s a reason we’ve since switched! What about Blu-rays?
Blu-rays were actually made with the intention of lasting 100 years. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues that spring up. Any discs that have two layers, such as Bd-50s (which have 50 Gb of storage versus 25 Gb for standard) are more likely to degrade as...

Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the guy who gave us ‘District 9,’ a movie that mixed aliens and real-world grit in a way that stuck with people. Now he’s diving into Robert A. Movies To Watch If You Liked ‘The Electric State’ on Netflix: Anthony and Joe Russo have had one of the most fascinating career trajectories of any filmmakers working in Hollywood. Despite having only a few comedy features to their name, the duo was hired to revolutionize the Marvel Cinematic Universe when they crafted “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which was instantly hailed as one of the greatest comic book films ever made. Although the Russo brothers continued to earn praise for their subsequent work on “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” their work outside of Marvel Studios has been rather disappointing.

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is set to reimagine StarshipTroopers for a new adaptation that will strip the franchise back to the basic elements of the sci-fi novel. The tale was originally brought to screens in 1997 by Paul Verhoeven, exploring the conflict between a futuristic space-faring and highly-propagandized militaristic society and a race of insectoid aliens. A cult-classic thanks to its VFX, action and over-the-top satirical exploration of fascism and propaganda, Starship Troopers has grown in appreciation, influence, and relevance with time.
The Hollywood Reporterreports that Blomkamp has been recruited by Sony to helm a new adaptation of StarshipTroopers for the big screen. Blomkamp will write and direct the feature, as well as serve as a producer alongside wife and frequent collaborator Terri Tatchell following their works on District 9 and Chappie. Rather than remaking Verhoeven's 1997 film, the upcoming feature will base itself directly on the original 1959 novel written by Robert A. Heinlein.

Johnny Rico is coming back to kill some more bugs.
Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, setting District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein.
Blomkamp will also produce the feature alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote the South African filmmaker’s District 9 and 2015 outing, Chappie.
Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.
While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

The science fiction horror film Pandorum dramatically failed both critically and commercially. Receiving almost universally negative reviews and losing money at the box office, the movie even led to the bankruptcy of the company that distributed it. Though initially planned as a franchise, its poor performance put an end to the idea, and it was quickly forgotten by audiences. Over a decade later, however, Pandorum remains far better than reviews suggest and deserves a chance from any fans of gritty science fiction or horror.
Though it looks like a fairly generic monsters-on-a-spaceship story on the surface, it is, in fact, far more original than many of its peers. The opening of the film hints at a deeper and darker backstory that is slowly revealed over time and, by the end, fans are left with horrors beyond mutants and monsters. Indeed, Pandorum uses its basic setup to tell a story that examines human nature,...

This month, the world has been shocked to learn that AppleTV+ does actually employ a few people who know how to market its shows. Or, maybe, just one show: Severance. The famously under-watched platform released the first eight minutes of the Season Two premiere. The official Severance podcast booked Adam Scott’s A-list friends to talk about it. Its four leads showed up in a transparent pen at New York’s Grand Central Station, wearing their show costumes and wigs, to pretend to work at their terminals.
It makes sense for Apple to put resources behind a show that has critics slavering in a way I haven’t seen since Succession went off the air, but it’s really overshadowed the other dark workplace comedy it’s bringing back this month: Mythic Quest, which with four seasons to its name is one of Apple’s longest-running shows, not to mention...

By returning to the MCU in 2026's upcoming Vision series, one unexpected Iron Man actor will break a huge Marvel Studios record which is about to be set by two returning characters in 2025. As the second spinoff from 2021's WandaVision series, there is a lot of anticipation for the Vision series, which will catch up with Paul Bettany's White Vision following his reawakening by Sword and battle in Westview. Excitement has grown after the hiring of Star Trek: Picard's Terry Matalas as showrunner and confirmation that several MCU actors will be reprising their roles.
While the Vision series will put the titular synthezoid front-and-center, James Spader was also confirmed to be returning as Ultron in August 2024. Ultron had a key role in Vision's development in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, so the tyrannical robot could play a huge role as the villain of the Vision series, but...

This marks Tahir’s first MCU appearance in nearly two decades, making his return a noteworthy moment for fans of the franchise.
Raza’s story was last seen in Iron Man, where he orchestrated Tony Stark’s kidnapping to force the creation of a Jericho missile. Although the character appeared to meet his end in the film, the MCU has shown time and again that death isn’t always permanent.
The series will follow Vision, played by Paul Bettany, as he attempts to regain his memories and redefine his purpose after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Vision series with Paul Bettany is going back to the source code: Faran Tahir is joining the show as Raza, the role he originated in the studio’s first feature film, 2008’s “Iron Man.”
Bettany is returning as the ghostly white version of the synthezoid he first played in the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and James Spader is reprising his role from “Age of Ultron” as the titular villainous AI. Todd Stashwick (“Star Trek: Picard”) is also playing an unspecified character.
Resurrecting Tahir’s character nearly 20 years after he first appeared will mark the longest gap between appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. That’s an even more impressive feat considering that Raza — best known for kidnapping Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, the inciting incident that leads Start to become Iron Man — was seemingly killed halfway through “Iron Man” by the film’s main villain,...

Tahir will reprise the role of the villainous Raza, leader of the terrorist organization the 10 Rings who tried to kill Tony Stark in Iron Man.
Details are scarce on the new project, but as we previously reported, the Marvel Vision spinoff has been in development at Disney+ since 2022 and was picked up to series in May. In addition to Bettany returning to the role he has played in three Marvel films and in WandaVision, James Spader will reprise his MCU role of Ultron. Todd Stashwick will also appear in an undisclosed role.

It's challenging to put Matt Damon into a box as an actor. He's starred in everything from romantic comedies to dramas, fantasy epics to biopics. His first major hit was Good Will Hunting in 1997, a movie that won him and cowriter Ben Affleck the Best Original Screenplay Oscar at the Academy Awards. It was in 2002, however, that Damon ascended to a new level of movie stardom, taking on the role of amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity.
Damon reprised his role as Bourne for three sequels, but his work in the action-heavy movies extended beyond this franchise. Damon had action-forward roles in movies like Green Zone (2010), True Grit (2010), Elysium (2013), and The Martian (2016), the latter two of which mix action with science fiction. Though Damon appeared in crime thriller The Instigators last year, his last true foray into pure action was almost 10 years ago now.

Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this.” We won’t have to wait much longer to see how well they did kill it, as Rlje Films will be giving Ash a nationwide theatrical release on March 21st – and in anticipation of that release, a teaser trailer and a teaser poster have been unveiled. Artificial intelligence used to be a longtime science fiction fan's dream, and, to borrow a Mitch Hedberg joke, it still is, too. In fiction, AI occupies a realm of possibility that renews our questions about who and what we are, and dances with theologic philosophies about whether or not we can create synthetic life worthy of a soul. The reality of AI remains a far cry from those visions of Fritz Lang and Isaac Asimov, incapable of independent creation, emotion, or thought.
Generative AI remains a disappointment because it's a fancy PR dodge on the level of the grapeless Grape-Nuts. There's no intelligence in ChatGPT or its "artistic" cousins, and definitely no sentience; it's a Chinese Room experiment with dressed up outputs. But real AI isn't all bad, either. While not a lot is known about Christopher Nolan’s next movie, its cast is already stacked with A-list talent. Christopher Nolan is no stranger to starry lineups. His most recent movie, 2023’s biopic Oppenheimer, included a historically impressive cast list dotted with Oscar winners, blockbuster stars, and acclaimed character actors alike. Oppenheimer’s cast of characters would be tough for any director to outdo but, never one to shy away from a challenge, Nolan has evidently taken it upon himself to offer viewers an even starrier affair next time. His 2026 mystery movie’s cast is shaping up to be a doozy.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Gladiator 2.
Gladiator 2's ending concludes the sequel with expected sword fights, Colosseum battles, and political machinations, but not without a familiar helping hand closing out the film. Gladiator 2's cast of characters is led by Paul Mescal's Lucius Verus, who begins the film under the alias Hanno. After having his home destroyed by the Roman Army, Lucius becomes embroiled in the world of gladiatorial combat, echoing the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius that concluded with Gladiator's emotional ending.
Throughout the film, Lucius - one of the many Gladiator characters based on real people - reckons with his true heritage as a grandson of Marcus Aurelius and the son of Maximus. Rather than bury his head in the sand and remain content to carry out wrathful vengeance, Lucius embraces his familial connections and begins fighting for the good of Rome via the Colosseum,...

Matt Damon has found success with several science fiction films over the years, proving that he fits well within the genre, including the underrated Elysium. Interstellar and The Martian, in particular, are two science fiction films that Damon received immense critical acclaim for. However, Elysium was released just before the two aforementioned films and never found the same recognition. 2013's Elysium was written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and is one of Damon's most overlooked movies.
In the world of Elysium, humanity lives on an overpopulated Earth that is full of disease. Meanwhile, the super-rich reside in a luxury space station called Elysium, where they have everything they desire, including medical bays capable of healing any disease. Matt Damon's character, Max Da Costa, sets out to equalize the two classes. Elysium has a score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is quite a strong sci-fi film and should be discussed...

May the Force be with Simon Kinberg, who’s recently signed a deal with Lucasfilm to write and produce a new Star Wars trilogy. Kinberg’s writing credits include the screenplay for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, 2015’s Fantastic Four, and multiple films in Fox’s X-Men franchise, including X-Men 3: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. He’ll produce the new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm alongside the studio’s chief, Kathleen Kennedy.
According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy involves episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga. However, insiders say Kinberg aims to launch a new saga that goes hand in hand with developing Star Wars projects from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Lucasfilm remains tight-lipped on the matter, which doesn’t surprise me after I saw their security measures when I visited Industrial Light & Magic last month.

Ridley Scotts $630 million space movie, The Martian, used a clever trick that also helped Christopher Nolans Oppenheimer 8 years later. The Martian was released in 2015 and follows the story of lonely astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) as he struggles to survive on Mars after being left behind by his crew. The 2015 space movie was a box office success and was even praised by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, most notably due to The Martians screenwriters dedication to scientific accuracy. Interestingly, NASA even provided a helping hand in depicting science and technology throughout the movie to promote space exploration.

Disco Elysium is a game I love wholeheartedly. From its artistic design to its grim and grounded, yet whack and witty writing. Every moment in that world has gripped me in a way that nothing else has before.
Despite this, – and I’m ashamed to admit it, – I’ve never actually finished the game. But there is something to be said of the kind of magic that, without having the chance to reveal itself, lingers. Like a sweet and longing aftertaste. Like a craving you can’t place.
Disco Elysium is able to masterfully capture the absurdity of complex topics, like addiction, and explore the contrast between the internal and external world. There is a quest where your necktie begs you buy formaldehyde from a random man in a gutter, insisting that this is your endgame, this is everything you’ve ever worked towards.
Disco Elysium is Lightning in a Bottle.

Director Neill Blomkamps divisive science fiction action outing Elysium will be available to stream for free this month. And it might be time to give the movie another chance. Written and directed by Blomkamp in his second feature film following the success of the acclaimed District 9, Elysium stars Matt Damon as a lowly worker on a ravaged and overpopulated Earth who, like the majority of humanity, longs to go to the luxurious artificial world known as "Elysium." After suffering an accident and being given a powerful (and visually striking) exoskeleton, he might just get that chance.

Matt Damon isn't exactly the first person someone thinks of when they think sci-fi, but he's starred in quite a few science fiction films over the years. There's The Adjustment Bureau, which is best known for the crackling chemistry between Damon and Emily Blunt as much as its concept of mysterious men in hats who shape the world. There's his surprise appearance in Interstellar, where he played an astronaut that would do anything it takes (including murder) to get back home. But the sci-fi film he gave one of his best performances in is Elysium, which is now available to stream on Netflix.

A stranded Matt Damon in space was a concept begging to be brought to life. Whether as a lead, supporting player, or in unexpected cameo form, everyone is happy to see Damon on screen. In the 2010s, following critical and financial success as an action and dramatic star, he began pivoting into science fiction. Starting with Elysium in 2013, Damon's credentials as a sci-fi star were elevated with a brilliant surprise appearance in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. The actor capped off this run in 2015 with The Martian, Ridley Scott's adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir. Now streaming on Max, The Martian shows Scott firing on all cylinders as director and Damon at the peak of his movie star charm and energy.

Matt Damon's critically acclaimed sci-fi box office hit The Martian is now streaming on Max. Neill Blomkamp will follow the success of Gran Turismo with Alpha, starring Aaron Paul as an FBI agent hunting a prison inmate turned into an apex predator.
Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.
The last project on that list may yet happen, some day. Blomkamp began talking about a sequel to his beloved science fiction movie back in 2021, with star Sharlto Copley adding a couple of years ago that it was still at least a year away from shooting.
