One of the trickiest aspects of HBO’s House of the Dragon was the way viewers spent roughly half of the drama’s first season with “younger” versions of our two heroines — Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower — before a time jump brought longer-term stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke to the screen.
That put a lot of pressure on Milly Alcock and Emily Carey to anchor those initial episodes, which they did extremely well. Alcock had the greater visibility, quickly becoming a red carpet favorite and setting herself up for the opportunity to play Supergirl. Carey’s first major House of the Dragon follow-up, Netflix’s adaptation of Holly Smale’s coming-of-age Geek Girl series, isn’t as high profile as joining DC’s House of Zor-El, but it’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star.

Kendrick Lamar and Drake traded diss tracks Friday night in the latest salvos in the rapper’s weeks-long lyrical feud.

It’s not often that the SAG Awards stages a movie cast reunion, but one of the highlights of this year’s actors guild kudofest on Netflix was a lovefest for the 2006 romantic comedy The Devil Wears Prada, with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt taking the stage Saturday to present the first award for Male Actor in a Comedy Series (Jeremy Allen White of The Bear won).
“Two things, I forgot my glasses and the envelope,” Streep began after taking the mic solo. She was then joined onstage by Blunt carrying the envelope and Hathaway carrying her glasses.
“It’s an age-old question, where does the character end, and the actor begin?” Streep began.
Blunt retorted, “Meryl and Miranda Priestly are like twins,” referencing Streep’s fierce Anna Wintour-like fashion magazine editor from the movie, a maker and decimator of dreams.
“I don’t think I’m anything like Miranda Priestly!

Ewen MacIntosh, the British character best known for his scene-stealing work as Keith on the original U.K. version of "The Office," has passed away at the age of 50. His cause of death remains unknown, but the BBC reports that he died at the Willow Green Care Home in Darlington. In a statement, MacIntosh's friend Ed Scott praised those who cared for him before his death:
"Thanks to the incredible care and love provided by the wonderful medical staff and especially the nurses who all loved him when he brought a smile to their days."
MacIntosh was not a household name, but comedy fans, and especially those who are familiar with the original incarnation of "The Office," surely remember Keith. A dull, slow-speaking, Scotch egg-devouring weirdo with a passion for DJ-ing, Keith embodied what the series did so well -- he genuinely felt like a very real, and very awful...

Make way! Make way! Yes, after sailing into audiences' hearts back in 2016, Moana will return. And sooner than you think. Even with the planned live-action version still in the works, Disney has opted to turn what had been developed as a series set in the world of the film into an animated sequel — and it'll be out later this year.
In an interview ahead of an investors' call, where Disney took the chance to also send word of Zootopia 2 (likely to once more be called Zootropolis 2 here because of that pesky copyright conflict with a European zoo) landing in 2025 and the imminent arrival of the T-Swift concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (now with five extra songs and the added subtitle Taylor's Version) at its exclusive streaming home of Disney+ on 15 March, company boss Bob Iger confirmed the upgrade for Moana: The Series.

This post contains spoilers for the "Dirty Harry" films.
Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" changed cop movies forever upon its release in 1971. Capitalizing on the "law and order" craze stoked by President Richard Nixon, which was a reaction to the perceived anarchy of the various protest movements of the 1960s, Clint Eastwood's Miranda rights-flouting Harry Callahan fed conservative moviegoers a big, juicy slab of red meat. It also allowed the actor to flourish in a genre outside of Westerns, thus expanding his appeal and turning him into one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
"Dirty Harry" ends with Callahan, having caught and killed (in self-defense) a vicious serial killer, hurling his badge into a quarry. Throughout the movie, his hard-driving, occasionally extrajudicial methods, which could've resulted in a swift arrest and saved multiple lives, are decried by his superiors. It appears the inspector has had enough. Audiences, however,...

Exclusive: Award-winning House of Sand & Fog filmmaker Vadim Perelman has been attached to direct the movie Marinus, we hear, about the heroic rescue of 14K Korean evacuees by sea toward the end of the Korean War.
Adapted by J. Craig Stiles (Miranda’s Victim) off the book Ship of Miracles, Marinus follows a merchant marine captain, who along with a Korean doctor, commanded a ship that was rated to carry 65 passengers and ended up saving thousands – all while being pursued by enemy subs, fighter planes and contending with a Communist spy on board.
Despite the odds, not one soul perished. In fact, five babies were born during the journey, and they arrived safely at a South Korean harbor on Christmas Day. The captain was so touched by the experience that he later became a Benedictine monk. He has passed on, but is currently up for sainthood with the Catholic Church.

Of all the James Bond movies, "Die Another Day" is perhaps the most detested. Maybe you think it's an underrated Bond film deserving of more respect, but the prevailing view of this early 2000s outing is that of a truly shameful blunder in the canon. Of course, perspectives shift over time. At one point, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was treated with similar derision to "Die Another Day," and now George Lazenby's only outing in the tux is viewed as one of the best in Bond's 60-year on-screen run. But there's something about "Die Another Day" that I can't help but feel will forever keep it from achieving the same respect.
The ice palaces, invisible cars, and Korean colonels using plastic surgery to transform into insufferable British toffs, are all beyond ridiculous. But they're funny, and Bond has been funny and lighthearted at various points throughout his career to great effect.

"I don't want to see you become damaged goods..." "It's not just for me. What about the next girl?" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for the legal thriller film titled Miranda's Victim, getting a direct-to-vod release in October this fall. Based on true events, the film first premiered at the 2023 Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year as well as a few other smaller festivals. In 1963, after Trish Weir is kidnapped and sexually assaulted, her assailant is caught and tried. After he confesses without legal representation during the trial, he serves a two-year sentence, only to have the verdict later overturned. This retrial triggers a legal proceeding that forever changes the nation's justice system. As rotten as this sounds, it's what leads to the creation of the "Miranda rights". Abigail Breslin stars with Ryan Phillippe as a vicious defense attorney, plus Luke Wilson, Emily VanCamp, Mireille Enos, Enrique Murciano,...

After seven episodes into “And Just Like That” season 2, fans finally witnessed Aidan Shaw’s (John Corbett) anticipated return to the “Sex and the City” franchise.
Now that Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) beloved ex is back in the mix, fans are wondering what storyline will ensue given that Aidan “was Carrie’s best boyfriend” in the original series, said “Ajlt” writer, Samantha Irby, on the the show’s official “And Just Like That… The Writers Room” podcast. “He is the one who should have won… He and Carrie had such an insane chemistry, it was like jumping off the screen. They just looked so good and perfect.”
With that said, and the time that’s passed between them, the writers and showrunner, Michael Patrick King, decided to give Corbett “a makeover” to bring Aidan back in “a new way.”

Last week, Colleen Ballinger returned to YouTube, with the “Miranda Sings” creator performing a song addressed at allegations that she “groomed” an underage fan.
Now, more allegations are being lodged against Ballinger — by her ex-husband and a writer on her Netflix series, “Haters Back Off!”.
Joshua David Evans — who married Ballinger in July 2015, and split in September 2016 — took to Twitter to claim that Ballinger “gaslit” her fans and him.
“Anyone feeling hurt & gaslit right now, my message to you is this: Your experiences were real. The proof is there. Your trauma should be taken seriously. The proof is there. Your anger is justified. The proof is there. You deserve better. Take your power back. Sending you love,” Evans tweeted.

“And Just Like That” stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon have broken their silence about the surprising news that Kim Cattrall will appear as Samantha Jones in the “Sex and the City” sequel series.
“We had a conversation about it and we decided that it was right for the fans,” Davis, an executive producer of “And Just Like That” alongside Parker, Nixon, and showrunner Michael Patrick King, told Entertainment Weekly. “The fans miss Samantha. The fans love Samantha. Samantha’s a fantastic character. We get it.”
After appearing in two “Sex and the City” feature films, Cattrall turned down the opportunity to return for “Sex and the City 3,” in part, due to issues with the direction of the script and Samantha’s role. Shortly after, Cattrall and Parker engaged in a public falling out that resulted in Cattrall distancing herself from the franchise even further. The Samantha...

Emily VanCamp and Abigail Breslin in Miranda's Victim
60 years ago, Arizona teenager Patricia Weir, on her way home after an evening spent working in her local cinema, suffered a brutal assault at the hands of a stranger. Despite the social stigma associated with being victimised in that way, she fought for justice, and with the help of a police force which treated her with respect from the outset, her assailant was out away. Three years later, however, his sentence was quashed. The police had failed to let him know his tights or speak to a lawyer before they interrogated him, and the case collapsed. This was the origin of what are known in the US as ‘Miranda rights’.
The case – which would result in a retrial taking place – has legendary status within US legal history, but whilst students continue to learn about what happened to Ernesto Miranda, the experience of the woman he targeted.

The real-life story of Reality Winner’s arrest unfolds as such a sharp piece of on-the-nose political theater that it almost seems to have been dramatized. On June 3, 2017, the FBI showed up at the former Air Force member and Nsa translator’s house to question her about a leaked document that they’d traced back to her. Over the course of the interrogation — during which the agents did not read the ex-intelligence specialist her Miranda rights and during which she refrained from requesting a lawyer — Winner’s composure gradually deteriorated. She was arrested under suspicion of releasing an intelligence report that detailed Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections before being sentenced to five years and three months in prison, the longest ever for the crime.
Tina Satter’s subsequent dramatization of the arrest — first in 2019’s play “Is This a Room” and now in the HBO film “Reality” — pulls...

“Call Me Kat” has been canceled after three seasons at Fox, Variety has learned.
“We are very proud of ‘Call Me Kat.’ But, unfortunately, the audience response to it was not as strong as we had hoped,” a Fox spokesperson said in a statement. “We are thankful for our partnership with Warner Bros. Television, That’s Wonderful Productions, Sad Clown Productions, BBC Studios, Mayim Bialik, Jim Parsons and the entire cast and crew for their work and dedication to ‘Call Me Kat.'”
The multi-cam comedy was a high-profile get for Fox back in 2019, with the network giving the show a series commitment in a highly-competitive situation before formally ordering it to series in May 2020. Both series star Mayim Bialik and executive producer Jim Parsons were coming fresh off of the 12th and final season of the hit CBS multi-cam “The Big Bang Theory,” with “Call Me Kat” representing their first broadcast project after that show.

Fox is making its renewal and pick up decisions.
The network has canceled comedy series Call Me Kat after three seasons. The show has seen dwindling ratings, particularly in its third season.
On the comedy side, Fox still has Animal Control, which is expected to receive a second season. However, the future of Welcome To Flatch, which is in its second season, is unclear.
Call Me Kat has been paired with Animal Control and the two shows are not considered particularly compatible. Welcome To Flatch comes at an attractive price point, but the cancelation of Call Me Kat is not expected to influence Fox’s decision whether to bring it back for a third season. Finding more comedies is a priority for new head of comedy Cheryl Dolins.

Gwendoline Christie has had another great year on television, with scene-stealing turns in both drama and comedy series. After appearing in Netflix’s acclaimed adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s “The Sandman,” the “Game of Thrones” star was featured in another Netflix hit, the widely popular “Wednesday.”
“The Sandman” follows Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the personification of dreams who escapes from an occult ritual after 106 years and tries to re-establish his realm, the Dreaming. Christie plays Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell, and the show’s iteration of the Devil. Tom Ellis‘ “Lucifer” took a more liberal approach in its adaptation of Gaiman’s character, but Christie’s iteration is far closer to the version found in Gaiman’s original work.
Episode four features a scene wherein Morpheus visits hell and talks with Lucifer. It’s a fantastic example of Christie’s portrayal of the devil, as she turns any preconceptions...

Sex and the City fans had a lot of critiques for season one of And Just Like That…, the HBO Max reboot of the famed series. While there was plenty to like, fans largely hated what the series did to Steve Brady, Miranda Hobbes’ loveable husband. Since the end of season 1, fans have been calling for justice for Steve. We’ve been giving it a lot of thought, and we think there is just a single storyline that would satisfy the desire for justice.
‘Sex and the City’ fans argue that Steve Brady was robbed in ‘And Just Like That…’
Season 1 of And Just Like That… had many questionable storylines. Miranda Hobbes cheating on Steve Brady and leaving him for Che Diaz was among the worst. The cheating storyline isn’t the only way the character was shortchanged in season 1 of the HBO Max reboot.

Streep knew she had a unique movie in her hands with The Devil Wears Prada. The 2006 feature saw Streep play the powerful fashion editor Miranda Priestly. Right away, Streep expected that the film would resonate with audiences. Given the film’s commercial and critical success, it turns out her initial instincts were right.
“Right in the beginning, reading the script, I thought, ‘Nobody’s seen this before and the girls are going to like this!’ I didn’t have any doubt about it. It’s very rare and you...

Miranda Hart has shed light on some of the harsh Twitter abuse she’s endured, saying she’s in “shock” at how “we treat each other”.
The British comedian and actor is best known for her self-titled three-season BBC sitcom Miranda, which ran from 2009 to 2015.
She led the semi-autobiographical series as Miranda, who was the owner of a joke shop and boutique.
In a tweet shared on Friday (3 March), Hart, 50 wrote: “I naively thought Twitter ‘abuse’ might’ve eased.
“It doesn’t bother me that someone says I deserve cancer coz I’m unfunny or look pregnant with weight gain.
“It’s the shock of how we treat each other,” Hart added. “We all deserve & desire dignity so why do we forget to give that to fellow humans?”
Many users responded in support, with one agreeing that “Twitter can be a vicious place”.

Che Diaz exploded onto the scene in And Just Like That… and completely upended Miranda Hobbes’ life. By the time the show’s first season was over, Miranda had ended her nearly 20-year marriage and rejected an illustrious internship to follow Che to California. Sex and the City fans understandably hated it. While Che is returning for season 2 of the HBO Max reboot, fans may see a storyline they find more enjoyable. We think there may be a few clues that Che and Miranda are no more.

In the widely covered story of the U.S. intelligence operative harshly sentenced in 2018 for leaking a confidential report on Russian election interference to The Intercept, the accidental (in)appropriateness of the operative’s name was always an eyecatching detail. Could one of recent reality’s most highly public losers actually be called Reality Winner? Playwright Tina Satter’s enormously compelling film-directing debut adds another layer of cosmic irony to that nominative determinism. In using the title “Reality,” and being scripted verbatim from exchanges recorded by the FBI during Winner’s 2017 surprise interrogation, Satter not only vividly revisits the story, she also makes us question the very relationship between a narrative film and the truth it claims to expose. Reality can be stranger than fiction, but “Reality” fuses the two to become stranger, and more riveting, still.

With this year’s selection, the Berlinale seems to be creating space in the festival calendar, between Sundance and SXSW, for a particular type of American indie: the melancholy, slight, intensely personal and hence rather divisive kind, in which vaguely famous actors—usually the comedic kind—play downbeat iterations of their more familiar selves. It may not be a coincidence that Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg debuted here rather than home turf in 2010, but Dustin Guy Defa’s The Adults, which premiered in the festival’s Encounters strand, makes Baumbach’s problem child seem positively commercial by comparison. Fortunately for all involved, Universal have already picked it up; this is definitely not the type of movie to thrive in today’s marketplace.
