It’s only fitting that on the day the score drops for Challengers, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke’s first score since Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria would arrive. The Radiohead and Smile frontman’s latest work is the 12-track score for Daniele Luchetti’s Confidenza aka Trust, the Italian director adaptation of Domenico Starnone’s novel.
A collaboration with producer Sam Petts-Davies, the London Contemporary Orchestra, and a jazz ensemble featuring Tom Skinner and Robert Stillman, as reported by Stereogum, it’s not just an instrumental production as Yorke provides vocals throughout.
The film, which premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year and opens in Italy this week, stars Elio Germano as a teacher in his forties named Pietro Vella who works in a rundown Roman high school. He strongly believes he can help students strive for a better future and Teresa, and bright and rebellious student,...

Megadeth surprised fans with an impromptu acoustic set in front of the Hotel Madero in Buenos Aires.
Local Argentinians and Megadeth faithful who happened to catch the performance were treated to unplugged renditions of “Trust,” “Angry Again,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” And by unplugged, we mean totally acoustic — no mics, open air. Drummer Dirk Verbeuren doesn’t even have an instrument and instead slaps his thighs to the beat.
In the fan-filmed footage, the gathered crowd sings along soccer-chant style and actually overtakes the band in volume.
The pop-up set reprises Megadeth’s previous outside-of-hotel acoustic sets in Buenos Aires in 2016 (Four Seasons) and in 2018, when Mustaine played a surprise unplugged solo set for fans outside a hotel in Mendoza, Argentina, during a brief vacation following shows in Mexico.
Megadeth’s current Latin American tour runs through the end of April, followed by a European jaunt in June (tickets available here.

When rock and pop A-listers have needed a world-class country singer to sing on their song over the past few years, they usually call Chris Stapleton. Since his last album, 2020’s Starting Over, the 45 year-old traditionalist has duetted with Taylor Swift and Adele, written songs with Santana, and collaborated with Tom Morello and Pink. But that doesn’t mean he’s no longer a country centrist, having worked with everyone from Carly Pearce to Morgan Wallen to Willie Nelson.

Italy’s Indiana Production – which has just become part of pan-European studio Vuelta Group – is staying true to its roots with production kicking off this month on gender swap movie “Romeo is Juliet,” directed by quality comedy specialist Giovanni Veronesi, just as the company expands its horizons.
This latest title in Indiana’s slate stars A-lister Sergio Castellitto and Pilar Fogliati (“Romantiche”) who plays an actress named Vittoria who after being brutally rejected by a cynical stage director when she auditions to play Juliet in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” decides to reinvent herself as a man to audition for Romeo and gets the part. The film’s lead actors and director are pictured above.
“Romeo is Juliet” is being produced by Indiana, co-produced by Capri Entertainment, and will be distributed in Italian theatres by Vision Distribution. The movie will start production in September.

Chris Stapleton has announced that his fifth studio album, Higher, will drop on November 10th via Mercury Nashville. As a preview, he’s also shared the record’s first single, “White Horse.” Listen to the song below.
Co-produced by Stapleton along with his wife Morgane Stapleton and his longtime collaborator Dave Cobb, Higher is the first LP from the 45-year-old country star since 2020’s Starting Over. The 14-track album will “span genres and defy easy categorization,” according to a press release. Pre-orders are ongoing.
The single “White Horse” certainly suggests that Stapleton is leaning into his strengths as a cross-genre act. Lyrics about cowboys “ridin’ off into the sunset” create a classic country vibe, but the electric guitar-driven arrangement feels akin to straight-up rock music, with a thick wall of sound delivering the powerful harmonic progression, and a guitar solo that’s a whole lot closer to Lynyrd Skynyrd than Chet Atkins.

When Tim Burton was making "Batman" back in the late 1980s, he was approached by Warner Bros. about the possibility of including a few hot pop songs on the soundtrack. The studio's idea was to invite Prince to write several songs and to release a soundtrack record alongside an album of Danny Elfman's notable score. While Burton was a fan of Prince -- and who isn't? -- he didn't like the idea of including pop songs in "Batman." The studio, however, got their way, and songs like "Trust" and "Partyman" underscored several notable scenes in Burton's movie. Burton hated the result. He was once quoted as saying:
"It completely lost me. And it tainted something that I don't want to taint, which is how you feel about an artist. And actually, I liked his album. I wish I could listen to it without the feel of what had happened.

There are a number of reasons why Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever is not held in higher regard by fans of the Caped Crusader’s cinematic outings. Bat nipples, swapping Billy Dee Williams out for a scenery-chewing Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, and a sequence in which Chris O’Donnell’s Dick Grayson demonstrates his suitability for the role of Robin via some laundry-based karate all rank pretty highly.
Yet if there is one element of the movie that has stood the test of time more than anything, it’s the soundtrack. Batman Forever arrived at multiplexes in 1995, and it was a time when movie soundtracks were still a key part of the marketing machine. Few would play that game better either than the first one with Bat-nipples.

When a husband and wife move to a small town, a home invasion leaves the wife traumatized and suspicious that those around her might not be who they seem. Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green star as the husband and wife who move into a very slick modern home built out in the desert. The film's cast also includes Robert John Burke, Sarah Minnich, Mark Sivertsen, and Hayes Hargrove. This looks like it might have some good twists in the second half, but the rest of it just seems so plain and obvious and derivative. These are all ending up the same - no one is who they seem. Check it out. Here's the...

Can someone truly heal from a traumatic experience? “Intrusion” follows one couple as they come to terms with their own ordeal. In the process, a wife finds herself questioning everyone around her. The Netflix thriller relies on a small-town setting to deliver its fright-filled aspects. It’s a disturbing look at how people see the most idyllic of places and how those views shape the very nature of societal norms.

Netflix has dated its fall schedule of film releases, narrative and documentary. The service that promised a new movie each week has a whopping 43 films coming in the final four months of 2021. That is twice the volume of releases most film studios would dream of releasing in a busy calendar year. Can a studio generate that many movies and have most of them be any good? It will be a test of Netflix’s high volume plan, niche and targeted fare sprinkled with big star vehicles including the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Jennifer Lawrence, Adam McKay, Benedict Cumberbatch and more.
Here is the schedule; there are some question marks for films that are coming out that month with no specific date, and on limited release awards films that will play the Netflix-owned Paris and other theaters, theatrical date is first...

The Chattanooga Film Festival is back in just a couple of weeks, and this version, just like their last, is set to be all virtual. However, that hasn't stopped them from creating an impressively stacked lineup of features, documentaries, and amazing events for film fans across the United States, and all for only $65! There's a lot to get through in this announcement, but we wanted to point out a few potential highlights that Screen Anarchy readers might want to focus on, since there is so much to see! We've already announced the opening and closing features, Scenes From an Empty Church and Broadcast Signal Intrusion, as well as live events from Grady Hendrix and Clay MacLeod Chapman, but this full lineup looks insane. Netflix is doubling its production commitment in New Mexico with an additional $1 billion over the next 10 years as well as a 300-acre expansion of its Abq Studios in Albuquerque.
The streaming service acquired the studio, home to AMC hits “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” two years ago. Netflix also plans to move production for the upcoming fourth season of “Stranger Things” to Abq Studios next year. Netflix is currently in production in New Mexico on the original films “The Harder They Fall” and “Intrusion.”
“Ever since Netflix first chose New Mexico, they have been nothing but an incredible partner, pushing the boundaries of innovation and expansion while providing fulfilling work opportunities for so many New Mexicans,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “My administration has expanded our state’s competitive film incentives, facilitating higher-wage employment for New Mexicans all across the state, and increased opportunities for rural communities.

Calling Netflix an “incredible partner,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the streamer in a statement for “pushing the boundaries of innovation and expansion while providing fulfilling work opportunities for so many New Mexicans.”

Kerry Washington‘s alter ego Olivia Pope and the Scandal writers made a nod to Hillary Clinton on Thursday’s episode. And amid the current political news, Gladiators had lots to say about it on social media, particularly with many raising hands emojis.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: If you could give one canceled show one extra season (if only to wrap things up in a better way), which would it be?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
It wasn’t that we were watching “Hannibal” just to see Bryan Fuller and company get to the events of “Silence of the Lambs,” but that was sure a fun thing looming on the horizon. The “Manhunter”/”Red Dragon” arc was probably the show’s most conventional, but it was all the more intriguing for that odd disconnect, of a frequently told story going through the mind of one of TV’s most original storytellers and...

To quote American statesman Ron Swanson, "Awards are stupid, but they'd be less stupid if they went to the right person." The Oscars are far from a referendum on a movie's worth, and are much more reflective of the climate of Hollywood opinion than the actual quality of the nominees. But in that respect, we can still learn a lot about how the people making movies see themselves by looking at the big picture of Best Picture.

“From documentaries, we learn about our world and humanity,” was the greeting by Documentary Branch governor Kate Amend to the audience in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Wednesday evening at the opening of Documentary program. Amend said while this year’s nominated shorts were tragic, they were also about “courage and compassion.”
Referring to the Documentary Shorts as “The Big Shorts,” Amend (editor of The Long Way Home, Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport and The Case against 8) mentioned that 124 films qualified in both the Documentary Feature and Documentary Short Subject categories.

Displaying a transparency that few filmmakers of his fame and / or caliber would even bother with, Steven Soderbergh has, for a couple of years, been keen on releasing lists of what he watched and read during the previous twelve months. If you’re at all interested in this sort of thing — and why not? what else are you even doing with your day? — the 2015 selection should be of strong interest, this being a time when he was fully enmeshed in the world of creating television.

Whither Buck ?
Hola Gente, tis I Señor Fenix, he who must be obeyed!
In the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy I started to reflect on the pop culture landscape. At a recent visit to Midtown Comics I noticed a pile of Dynamite Comics. Dynamite is a label that publishes a few cool new titles and some really old licenses. They were the ones that noticed that John Carter of Mars was public domain in the United States and thus we were treated to dozens of covers with large breasted naked Dejah Thorises. Because of course, that’s what the comic book fans supposedly want.
So anyway….
One of the comics they publish is Buck Rogers. This is based on the old newspaper comic strip that was a big deal in the 1930s and 40s. Baby Boomers remember the Daffy Duck parody "Duck Dodgers" and later the 1970s Star Wars...

One of the most common complaints directed toward movie trailers today is that the preview gives away way too much. If you’re interested in catching the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ romance The Best of Me when it comes out on October 17th, you may want to save the spoilers and skip this two-and-a-half minute ad entirely.
The drama, which stars James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan, centers around Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier, two high-school sweethearts who reunite many years later, after Dawson is released from prison. Evoking elements of The Notebook and The Lucky One, both adaptations of Sparks’ bestsellers, The Best of Me shows the problems between the love interests when they were young (and played by the Point Break remake’s Luke Bracey and Trust‘s Liana Liberato) and then what happens when they meet up again years later.

Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen in Words and Pictures.
Juliette Binoche (Summer Hours) and Clive Owen (Trust) star in the 2013 romantic comedy Words and Pictures, directed by Australia’s great Fred Schepisi (The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Roxanne, A Cry in the Dark).
In the film, prep school English teacher Jack Marcus (Owen) meets his match in Dina Delsanto (Binoche) — an abstract painter, and new teacher on campus — and challenges her to a war between words and pictures…and, in the process, sparks an unlikely romance.
Uninspired plot synopsis that we gleaned from the equally uninspired press release aside, Words and Pictures received some solid press upon its limited theatrical release in May, 2014, with Entertainment Weekly proclaiming that the two stars had “a great Hepburn/Tracy rapport.”
