Gkids has acquired North American rights to Production I.G’s official Annecy selection The Deer King as the film premieres in the festival this week.
The fantasy epic takes place in the aftermath of a war as an enslaved former soldier and a young girl in a mine run by the Empire of Zol escape an attack by disease-carrying wild dogs from Aquafa, a region outside Zol’s control.
The pair seek a simple life in the countryside, however the widespread return of the disease pitches them into a struggle far larger than any one nation.

Monday Update, writethru after Sunday 11:41Am post: There was a bit more varied action at the international box office this holiday weekend. Highlights include the continued rollout of Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 with a good start in Australia, a sizable bow for China’s Shock Wave 2, the debut of Disney/Pixar’s Soul and a brand new milestone for Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train which has officially overtaken Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing film ever in Japan.
Starting with Wonder Woman 1984, the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel added an estimated $19.4M from 40 overseas markets, taking the international box office cume to $68.3M. When combined with this frame’s domestic debut, the worldwide running total is $85M.
Last week’s bow was hindered by a soft debut in China, and the picture isn’t any rosier in the Middle Kingdom, but there are some positive signs elsewhere.

Where can you meet likeminded UFO and paranormal enthusiasts from around the world? Check out these conventions.
At most comic cons and fan events, one expects to run into people dressed as supernatural entities, extraterrestrials, and mysterious creatures. But at paranormal, cryptozoology, and ufology events, fans are discussing the existence of them – and often gather to actively go looking for them.
And as much as I move about in the world of comic cons, for the past decade or so, I have spent weekends traveling the world to talk as a journalist and researcher about ghosts, demons, curses, aliens, UFO, and monsters. During the day, the world of paracons closely resembles most fan events, and there is quite a bit of cross-pollination between them. There are panels, vendor rooms, and signings by notable authors, television personalities, and occasionally actors from paranormal pop culture. But at night, the activities continue with a skywatch,...

Claudia Karvan in 'Newton's Law'..
How did you get involved in Newton.s Law?.
I think they originally wrote it for Miriam Margolyes. She was originally devised as an old, fat Jewish woman (laughs). I've never worked with them before so I don't know how I came on their radar. I was a big admirer of the film Mallboy.that Fiona [Eagger] produced a long time ago. It's one of my favourite Australian films. It really packs a punch..
I've never heard of it.
It's really worth checking out. I loved it. And then, obviously, [I.m] a big fan of SeaChange and totally appreciate the extraordinary phenomena that is Miss Fisher, and what successful producers they are. They just approached me, I read it, we had a few conversations and then it was all happening. I really wanted to play a character who was emotionally intelligent and had authority and...

Following strong notices for their breakout zombie film "Undead" in 2003, Australian genre filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig teamed with Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill for the vampire action flick "Daybreakers" back in 2009. Five years on, they're back for their third feature "Predestination" which also stars Hawke along with Noah Taylor and Sarah Snook.
Dropping horror in favor of complicated sci-fi, this might be their best effort yet. Based on "Starship Troopers" author Robert A. Heinlein’s 1960 short story "All You Zombies," the action follows a Temporal Agent who must pursue a criminal that has eluded him throughout time and at the same time ensure his own survival.
Actress Sarah Snook has scored a strong reputation here in Australia for her work on the TV series "Spirited" and films like "Not Suitable for Children". Here she takes on what appears to be a meaty role where half the time they've adjusted...

Now shooting in Melbourne and country Victoria, the comedy Oddball is breaking all the rules which say you should never work with children, animals, birds and on or near water.

Based on a true story, the film stars Shane Jacobson as Swampy Marsh, an eccentric chicken farmer who, helped by his granddaughter, trains his mischievous dog Oddball to protect a wild penguin sanctuary from fox attacks.
Saran Snook plays Swampy.s daughter Emily, a single mother, with Coco Gillies as her daughter and Alan Tudyk as an American tourism consultant who is hired to help the town get back on its feet.

I am most impressed by Weinstein Co's first trailer for The Railway Man, which looks to deliver excellent performances from leads Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Hiroyuki Sanada, as well as Stellan Skarsgård and War Horse star Jeremy Irvine. The story which is based on Eric Lomax's autobiography, is scripted by Andy Paterson and Frank Cottrell Boyce. Jonathan Teplitzky, known for TV's Spirited and 2011' Burning Man starring Matthew Goode, takes on the biggest project of his short career, and looks to have turned in a gem of a film. In The Railway Man, Lomax, a man scarred with memories from World War II's "Death Railway" finds love in Patricia Wallace (Kidman). When one of the men responsible for his torture is tracked down, Lomax confronts him.

The day after Australian actress Yael Stone got married in the Us last year, she turned up for an audition with a slight hangover and in her words, "still glowing."
The Nida graduate who was a regular in Spirited and All Saints must have impressed the producers of Orange is The New Black, a TV dramedy set in a women's prison: She landed the role of inmate Lorna Morello in the 13-episde series which premiered in the Us on Netflix last week to rave reviews.
From Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, the show features Taylor Schilling as an engaged yuppie who is serving a 15-month stint in the slammer for her unwitting role in an international drug smuggling ring.
"The most appealing elements come from the wealth of supporting players, including a breakout turn by Yael Stone as a wonderfully distinctive character who seems to have parachuted in from a 1930s gangster film,...

Too often, when a film features time travel, a ton of time is spent trying to explain the time traveling with displays of elaborate devices and long-winded speeches, instead of getting to the meat of the story in which the time travel is taking place. If the upcoming adaptation of Robert Heinlein.s short story .---All You Zombies---. is anything like the source material, the story will be much too busy piling paradoxes to try and explain everything. The second cast member to join the film, titled Predestination, will be Australian actress Sarah Snook, whom Deadline reports will play the film.s female lead opposite Ethan Hawke. Predestination will be written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, the brothers responsible for 2009.s promising but troublesome vampire drama Daybreakers, which also starred Hawke. Sam Reid and Sarah Snook have been cast in the lead roles for prospective Australian apocalyptic-noir The Second Coming.
The anouncement comes as the film project has just passed the halfway mark of a 42-day crowdfunding campaign, which has so far raised just over 50 per cent of its $75,000 minimum. The producers are attempting to raise $200,000 total.
It looms as another test for the ability of crowdfunding to both promote bigger screen projects while growing a fan base. South Australian-filmed horror feature The Babadook just scraped over the line with its $30,000 crowdfunding campaign last month.
The Second Coming, based on Andrew Masterson's novel about a man who believes he is Jesus and is then forced to clear his name after becoming a murder suspect, is planned to commence shooting next year.

Has an Australian filmmaker finally cracked the rarely attempted romantic comedy genre? Colin Delaney visits the set of Not Suitable for Children to find out if Oscar nominated, first time feature director Peter Templeman’s flick about testicular cancer has the balls to make it big at the box office.
A mismatched collection of twenty somethings loiter in front of a large old house in Eveleigh, south of Sydney’s Cbd. Goths, surfers, hipsters and stoners make up the group. Inside it’s shoulder-to-shoulder with revellers filling hallways and stairwells. The event is not just thrown together either – flashing lights and disco balls suggest the members of this household take their parties seriously. And the amount of drugs and alcohol circulating certainly deem the environment unsuitable for children.

Filmmaker Robert Connolly has ended his term as Screen Australia board member early.
The writer, director, producer was due to sit on the board until December 2013, but he finished early due to film-making commitments.
While on the board, Connolly received Screen Australia funding for his project Paper Planes, and also for his adaptation of Tim Winton’s The Turning.
At the time, Screen Australia denied that there was a conflict of interest.
“We have a clear working conflict of interest policy that works,” a spokesperson said. “We don’t exclude working film-makers from our board as we need that expertise. But we have a system in place that works.”
Film financier Greg Smith, who has sat a full term, will also step down from Screen Australia’s board.
Screen Australia chair Glen Boreham said on their departure: “For all their complementary strengths, Robert and Greg both shared one thing: passion.

Matchbox Pictures will produce a new six-hour mini-series about Australian and English journalists covering the battle of Gallipoli with actor Sam Worthington to co-produce, and possibly star in. Among the journalists to be portrayed is Keith Murdoch, father of Rupert Murdoch.
Keith Murdoch’s endeavours in covering Gallipoli is near legendary, credited in some quarters with being a turning point in what had been a badly run campaign.
Penny Chapman of Matchbox Pictures, producers of The Slap and The Straits, told Encore Worthington and his FullClip Productions partner John Schwarz brought the project to NBCUniversal which FullClip is in talks with on other productions, and which owns a major interest in Matchbox Pictures.
The untitled project has received development funding by Foxtel.
The mini-series follows three embedded journalists who see the war going wrong but can’t report on it; Charles Bean, British war correspondent Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett and Rupert Murdoch...

Paul Chai speaks to the commissioners and producers of local content to discover a wealth of opportunities available in the Australian subscription television market for original formats.
When subscription television launched in Australia during the 90s there was initially little to no local content across the network. “Short form content only, that was the extent of it,” says Julie Ward, then head of production at Foxtel. “But there was always the vision of the halcyon days when there would be money for local content.”
In the early days, money went into start-up technology and building a subscriber base. Deals with overseas networks provided the channels with hours of cheap, proven content – a business model more cost effective than commissioning homegrown programming. But as the number of subscribers grew, so too did revenue for the pay television sector – in the six months to December last year, Foxtel subscription income increased 5.1 per...
