Spanish Screenings on Tour: A Horror Film About Lorca’s Last Days, the Next From ‘Julia’s Eyes’ Guillem Morales, and a Lineup Rich on Animation, Fantasy and Crime
Image
Jim Sheridan and David Merriman’s real crime re-imagination “Re-Creation,” Alberto Rodríguez’s big-scale “Los Tigres,” Paz Vega’s directorial debut “Rita” feature in Spain’s lineup at this year’s AFM.

They are joined at the Spanish Screenings on Tour by “Nightfall,” a Federico García Lorca focused real life horror film from “Wounded” director Fernando Franco, and “Wolf Night,” the latest from Guillem Morales.

Rich on crime thrillers, this year’s Spanish slate also plays to two of Spain’s strengths, the subject of Spanish Screenings showcases, which luckily enough are also proved to be of general market demand: animation and genre/fantasy. The Screenings also highlight just a few of the Spanish companies which have scored recent market hits. Very few were around before 2010 – a sign of Spain’s relatively recent dramatic growth.

‘The Last Night At Tremore Beach’ Netflix Review: Oriol Paulo’s Thriller Show Is Infuriatingly Boring
Image
Cinephiles are definitely familiar with the name of Oriol Paulo, because he has made some of the best movies (and a show) set in the thriller genre. Paulo also happens to have a weird connection to India because almost everything that he makes eventually gets remade in Hindi. The first feature film written by Paulo was Julia’s Eyes, and it was remade as Blurr. His debut directorial was The Body, which was not only remade in Hindi but also in Korean and Tamil-Kannada. Paulo then went on to make The Invisible Guest, which gained such worldwide popularity that it got an Italian, a Hindi, a Telugu, a Korean, a Kannada, and a Chinese remake. Paulo’s Mirage got a Hindi adaptation in the form of Dobaaraa. Paulo received critical acclaim and several awards for God’s Crooked Lines, and his first Netflix miniseries, The Innocent, was a massive hit. So, it...

“I watch it every year at least once”: Guillermo del Toro Considers 1 Steven Spielberg Movie Criminally Underrated That Had Made Tom Hanks ‘Beg’ to Join the Cast
Image
When two titans of cinema cross paths, you know there’s some serious movie magic involved. One Steven Spielberg gem that often flies under the radar, has a special place in Guillermo del Toro’s heart—and he’s not shy about calling it “criminally underrated.” Imagine Tom Hanks, the guy who’s basically Hollywood royalty, practically begging for a role.

Guillermo del Toro. Credit: Guillermo del Toro/X

Yep, that’s how much this film hit the sweet spot. Del Toro’s admiration for this underappreciated masterpiece just might have you rethinking your next movie night lineup. So, if you haven’t seen it, you might want to buckle up for a Spielberg-Hanks combo that’s got a whole lot more depth than its critics gave it credit for.

This Guillermo del Toro-Produced Horror Mixed Hitchcock With Giallo

We are all familiar with modern horror films that have figures lurking in the shadows or rooms so dark that you find yourself squinting at the screen. But what about when the main character is blind and the audience is forced to see through her eyes? Julias Eyes, also known as Los Ojos de Julia, is a 2010 Spanish horror and psychological thriller directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro that changes how the audience interacts with the content.

The Wasp Director Praises Naomie Harris & Natalie Dormer's Performances
Image
The Wasp is finally making its way to theaters nationwide after a successful run on the festival circuit, and audiences aren't prepared for the cinematic feast that awaits them. Spanish filmmaker Guillem Morales directed the project from a screenplay by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, who adapted her stage play for the screen with aplomb. The story follows a troubled woman named Heather (played by Naomie Harris) whose unhappy marriage leads her to seek out an estranged childhood friend, Carla (played by Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones fame).

Rather than seeking to reminisce or recapture her youth, however, Heather's reconciliation with Carla is focused on creating a future without her husband Simon in it. Dominic Allburn and Jack Morris also star in The Wasp as the two women's husbands, but it is the complicated layers of friendship and betrayal that demand the viewer's attention. The movie is a powerfully crafted thriller...

The Wasp trailer: Naomie Harris, Natalie Dormer plot a murder in psychological thriller
Image
Shout! Studios will be giving the psychological thriller The Wasp, starring Naomie Harris of Skyfall and Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones, a theatrical release on August 30th, and with that date just eight weeks away a trailer for the film has made its way online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Julia’s Eyes director Guillem Morales was at the helm of The Wasp, working from a screenplay written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, based on Malcolm’s stage play of the same name. Dominic Allburn (A Place to Call Home), Jack Morris (Into the Deep), Rupert Holliday-Evans (Silent Witness), Naomi Richards (The Ballad of Lucy Sands), Jake Donald-Crookes (Hill of Vision...

The Wasp Review: Natalie Dormer And Naomie Harris Stun In A Dark, Riveting Psychological Thriller
Image
Reconnecting with a childhood friend is always a little strange, but "The Wasp" takes it to a whole other level. This psychological thriller is all about Heather (Naomie Harris), a seemingly put-together, well-off woman who reaches out to Carla (Natalie Dormer), a standoffish pregnant former classmate who barely seems to remember her. Heather wants to hire Carla to do a dangerous, morally dubious task, but more importantly she wants to talk through everything that happened back when they were kids. Their childhood friendship fell apart the day young Carla killed a wounded bird in front of young Heather; as we learn throughout a suspenseful, emotional 96 minutes, things are weird between them for reasons far more complicated than that.

I hesitate to say more about the plot, because "The Wasp" is one of those movies where it's best to know as little as possible going in. It's a film split into three clear acts,...

‘Julia’s Eyes’ Helmer Guillem Morales Preps Psychological Thriller ‘Brother,’ WestEnd Launches Sales in Cannes (Exclusive)
Image
“Julia’s Eyes” helmer Guillem Morales is readying 1980s-set psychological thriller “Brother,” with WestEnd Films set to launch sales at the Cannes virtual market later this month.

Morales, one of Spain’s top genre auteurs, is best known for 2010 Spanish horror “Julia’s Eyes” (pictured), which was produced by Guillermo del Toro. The director recently won a BAFTA for his work on the hit BBC dark comedy anthology series “Inside No. 9.”

“Brother” is set in the early 1980s and located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The pic turns on the depraved Morrow family, which lives off the beaten path and preys on young women whom they kidnap from the side of the highway. There’s unrest within the family, however, as their 19-year-old son Michael Morrow tries to break free from their clutches and escape his past.

“Set in the early eighties, just as Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ was released in theaters,...

‘Two,’ from ‘The Photographer of Mauthausen’ Director Mar Targarona, Joins Film Factory Sales Slate (Exclusive)
Image
One of the Spanish-speaking world’s biggest sales forces, Film Factory Entertainment has swooped on sales rights to thriller “Two” (“Duo”), directed by Mar Targarona and the latest production from top Spanish genre auteur producer Rodar y Rodar.

Producer of two milestone titles of Spain’s genre auteur scene – J.A Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillem Morales’ “Julia’s Eyes,” Targarona has built her own directorial career on suspense thrillers that prove unexpected and unpredictable in tone and resolution, such as 2016’s “Boy Missing” and “The Photographer of Mauthausen” – part true-events inspired record, part edge-of-set entertainment – in particular drawing strong notices. “Two” looks no exception. Its singular premise sees two strangers, a man and a woman in their 30s, wake up in an unknown place, naked and glued to each other by their stomachs. They struggle to understand how and why they got there – becoming increasingly terrified as they discover clues and the truth emerges.

Palme d’Or winning producer Luis Miñarro (“Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”) is set to direct his fifth feature, ”Impalpable” (a working title), produced by Miñarro’s label, Barcelona-based Eddie Saeta, one of Spain’s most prominent arthouse shingles.

Written by Miñarro, “Impalpable” follows a series of characters who take a bus to an unspecified destination. The situation becomes gradually

stranger as the bus make no stops. Nor can the passengers descend.

“Impalpable”‘s cast will include Naomi Kawase, Geraldine Chaplin and Spain’s Lola Dueñas (“The Sea Inside”) and Francesc Orella (“Julia’s Eyes”), among others.

By chance, though with foresight, ”I first thought of this project before the pandemic. It’s a homage to Luis Buñuel’s ‘The Exterminating Angel,’” Miñarro told Variety. Over three days and two nights, its characters get to know one another, as the audience enters the minds of main characters, unleashing...

Watch: First Trailer For Netflix Horror Movie The Paramedic
You can tell we’re approaching October when more scary content starts to appear on major services, with the latest offering, Spanish psychological horror The Paramedic, having a trailer and batch of images released.

When you see news about a movie with any kind of medical or sickness connotation to its title or central concept, it’s difficult to not immediately jump to the assumption that it’s a cynical attempt to exploit current world circumstances, such as the hatefully abysmal Corona Zombies. Thankfully, The Paramedic is nothing like that, instead being an insidious tale of paranoia and control.

After a road accident during a call-out, the titular first responder Ángel is confined to a wheelchair, his bitterness and reliance on his partner Vane leading him to suspect she’s cheating on him, resulting in him first stalking her movements and communications, then keeping her prisoner in their apartment, in...

New Julia's Eyes Clip Focuses on the Paranormal
It's been a while since last we talked about one of the latest fright flicks from producer Guillermo del Toro, Julia's Eyes (Los ojos de Julia), but lo and behold yet another clip has slipped online. Dig it!

Julia's Eyes is directed by Guillem Morales, who co-write the screenplay along with Oriol Paulo. It is produced by Rodar's Joaquin Padro and Mar Targarona and co-financed by Focus Features Intl. Belen Rueda (The Orphanage) and Lluis Homar (Broken Embraces) are starring in the film, which tells the story of a woman slowly going blind as she investigates the mysterious death of her twin sister.

The film is shot from Julia's Pov, so the scare tactics will include panic attacks as her sight fails. Says [producer] Padro, "The thriller's an excuse to talk about a woman who overcomes her limitations; it's a journey of self-discovery."

Jdiff '11 Review Roundup: 'Julia's Eyes,' 'A Somewhat Gentle Man'
Belén Rueda in Julia's Eyes (2010)
The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, aka Jdiff, first inaugurated in 2003, wrapped its packed 11-day run on Sunday 27th February. Our "man" (read: "woman") on the ground, was in attendance - here are some short reviews of just a few of the many films screened. "Julia’s Eyes" (Los Ojos de Julia) You know when a filmmaker has transcended his profession and truly become a ‘brand’, when it’s his name that hangs above the title of a film that he probably had minimal involvement in actually making. And so it is now with Guillermo del Toro, the visionary director of…...

Top 5 Most Anticipated Spanish Films for 2011
2010 gave us a unique batch of films in Emilio Aragón's Paper Birds (Pájaros de Papel), Achero Mañas's Anything You Want (Todo lo que tú quieras), Jordi Cadena & Judith Colell's Elisa K. and festival circuit favorites in Javier Mariscal & Fernando Trueba's Chico y Rita, Guillem Morales' Julia’s Eyes (Los ojos de Julia) , Icíar Bollaín's Even the Rain (También la lluvia), Andrucha Washington' Lope and Alex de la Iglesia's nutty concoction The Last Circus (Balada triste de trompeta), but 2011 will be one hell of a ride. It should be a strong year for films from Spain not only in its domestic cull but on the international scene as well, and the films featured on the list appear to be more "ambitious" batch in their form and shape. These are my Top 5 Most Anticipated Spanish Films for 2011. #5. Extraterrestial This sci-fi comedy set in a small...

See the Opening of Julia's Eyes
Can't wait to see the latest fright flick from producer Guillermo del Toro, Julia's Eyes (Los ojos de Julia)? Well then get ready to get hung up over the film's opening scene!

Check out the opening below courtesy of Abando Moviez, and look for more soon.

Trailer, Images and Synopsis for the Guillermo del Toro Produced Julia’S Eyes
Attach Guillermo Del Toro’s name to just about anything I’m likely to go see it. The trailer for Julia’s Eyes, directed by Guillem Morales, looks like the creepy, atmospheric horror that del Toro knows how to deliver and help other filmmakers deliver. There’s a shared sensibility he seems to have with Morales just as he had with director Juan Antonio Bayona for The Orphanage. Coincidentally, both films star Belén Rueda.

This promo trailer for Julia’s Eyes does a good job of selling the film, although like most promo trailers it shows a little too much. I wouldn’t go so far as to say its spoilerific, but consider this fair warning. We’ve also included the official synopsis and images from the film after the jump. Julia’s Eyes will play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 9 – 19th.

First Glimpse Of Del Toro Produced Julia's Eyes
Now a little over a month into production, the first artwork has just been released from Guillem Morales' Los Ojos De Julia. A Spanish production backed by Focus Features in what looks to be a similar arrangement to how Focus was involved with Park Chan-Wook's Thirst, this one has an automatic leg up in that it is being produced by Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro.  Because, you know, he's not already busy enough prepping The Hobbit.  The story follows a young woman (played by Belen Rueda) dealing with the slow erosion of her sight while investigating the suicide of her blind twin sister.  And judging from that image I'm guessing there's something unpleasant behind the sisters' blindness.
