With every role, Jason Bateman established and built on his legacy over the last four decades. Be it as a child star in the ubiquitous great American classic, Little House on the Prairie, or his status as a teenage heartthrob in Teen Wolf, or his dramatic achievement in the Emmy-winning Netflix series, Ozark, Bateman’s range, style, and talent has never failed to deliver on screen.

His roles, however wacky or eccentric, were always rooted in reality and his functional and socially acceptable lead gave a cushion to his co-stars to explore their quirks without restraint.

Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms star in a new body-swapping comedy, Family Switch. This isn’t the first rodeo for Jennifer Garner, but Ed Helms is venturing into the sub-genre and quickly found out about the complexities of such a concept. The fun of comedies such as Freaky Friday, Vice Versa, Like Father, Like Son, The Change-Up and others are the identity crises that the characters faces when trying to fit in each others’ lives without rousing suspicion. It’s a classic comedy trope and every generational gap finds it hard to relate to each other or find a semblance of common ground.
The concept also lends itself to many situations where the characters are forced to act like the person whose body they’re inhabiting. Family Switch‘s plot involves the whole family swapping bodies, which will place the parents in the kids’ bodies and the kids in the...

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

Kim Jae-Hoon's "Devils" is the psychologically twisted South Korean remix of "Freaky Friday" and "Face/Off." Throw some "Freaky" in there to hit on violent slasher elements where a killer has complete control of an innocent's body, because why not? The melting pot of subgenres plays sterner than Jae-Hoon's science-freaky, body-swapping premise might suggest, but that's not a missed opportunity. "Devils" is a slippery crime thriller that plugs surprises into an albeit ludicrous concept, and while the ending leaves a tad to be desired, it's still well worth the mind games and manipulation at stake.

And having only just wrapped Netflix’s globetrotting heist blockbuster Red Notice opposite Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, Reynolds is already gearing up to stick with the streaming service for an untitled time travel project under the direction of Free Guy‘s Shawn Levy, while buddy movie sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is in the can and awaiting release next summer as well.

I grew up in the era of the body-swap movie, the 1980s, where a resurgence in the genre led to films like Big, Vice Versa, 18 Again, Like Father Like Son, and my personal favourite (and one of my Top 5 films of all time) Dream a Little Dream. Since then there have been a myriad of such films, be they family friendly like 13 Going on 30 and the Lindsay Lohan-starring Freaky Friday remake; to more raunchy fare like The Change-Up and The Hot Chick… Most have one thing in common: the characters within learn from the situation. Switched is no different, however never have I ever experienced a body swap film like this one.

The body swap formula never seems to get old, with comedies like Vice Versa, Freaky Friday, Hot Chick and The Change-Up giving us different variations on the familiar trope. But take that premise and apply it to the horror genre, and you get something totally fresh. Freaky is a new horror comedy from Blumhouse that […]

HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.
Below is the full list of everything coming and going in August.

Ryan Reynolds might be known for lacing the vast majority of his onscreen performances with a rich dose of self-deprecating humor, but the Deadpool star hasn’t actually featured in an out-and-out comedy for close to a decade. While he’s made uncredited cameo appearances in Seth McFarlane’s Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West, you’d have to go back to 2011’s The Change-Up to find his last comedy vehicle.
Directed by Wedding Crashers‘ David Dobkin, The Change-Up puts an R-rated spin on the body-swap formula as Reynolds’ hedonistic man-child Mitch ends up trading lives and identities with his longtime best friend Dave, with Jason Bateman finding himself in familiar territory as the straight man in a foul-mouthed studio comedy.

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. Sticking in Gotham, both seasons of Harley Quinn are also coming to HBO Max, following their original release on DC Universe.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Two underrated Ryan Reynolds movies, Buried and Definitely, Maybe, are now streaming on Prime/Hulu and Netflix, respectively.
About two decades ago, Reynolds’ only claim to fame was a little sitcom titled Two Guys and a Girl. An uninspired show which tried to imitate iconic comedies of the time, it hardly predicted the future that was in store for one of the two male leads. In the years that followed, Reynolds would star in numerous roles, some good, some bad.
Honing his comedic timing through films like Just Friends, The Proposal and The Change-Up, the actor eventually landed the part of Deadpool. Rectifying the mistakes made during the atrocious X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds delivered a film that honored the zany comic strips on which it was based, and gave Fox a franchise that could rival even Marvel’s.
If that isn’t enough of a testament to his skill as an actor,...

Will Ferrell hasn’t headlined a well-received comic film since The Other Guys (2010), depending on your taste in comedies—especially if you’re not including The Lego Movie (2014) for which he was the main antagonist but not really the star per se. One would think he personally had a lot riding on the success of his new film, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, since he not only stars in, but also produced and co-wrote the film. It is then disappointing and somewhat disconcerting at just how tedious and repeatedly unfunny the film turns out to be.
Given that Americans may not know exactly how important the Eurovision contest is to the European market, the breadth and scope of the film may feel bewildering to many from the start. The film tells the story of best friends Lars Erickssong (Ferrell) and his partner Sigrit (Rachel McAdams), whose band—Fire Saga—becomes,...

In the before times, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, a comedy directed by David Dobkin and co-written by and starring Will Ferrell, a comedian who’s made a virtual meal out of playing a relentlessly high-energy, dim-witted man-child and buffoon, was all set to premiere with the 65th edition of the European Song Contest in May. But with the pandemic raging and large-scale mass events a no-go for the foreseeable future — the competition was delayed an entire year — Netflix decided to forego any synergy that might accrue with the simultaneous release of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with the actual competition and stream Farrell’s musical parody now. They probably should...

In 2005, filmmaker David Dobkin struck comedy gold with “Wedding Crashers,” an oafish, but hilarious bromantic buddy comedy—shades of Todd Phillips’ “Old School”— with some earnest notes of sweetness that has become something of a contemporary comedy classic. Dobkins veered much too far into the dunderheaded, toxic side of bro-ish masculine comedy in 2011’s coarse “The Change-Up,” but for his latest effort, his first feature and comedy since then, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” the filmmaker finds a sweet spot of zany comedy that lays on the sentimental feel-goodery rather thick.

Will Ferrell’s singing voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus, which makes him the perfect choice to get involved in an international singing competition, which his character does in the upcoming Netflix film, fully titled Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Ferrell was heavily involved with Eurovision, having co-written the script with frequent collaborator Andrew Steele, and also served as co-star and producer. The feature was directed by David Dobkin.
The premise is based on the long running international TV music competition, The Eurovision Song Contest. The contest, created in 1956, pits each participating nation from the European Broadcasting Union against one another, challenging them to write and perform an original song for a live TV and radio performance. Notable past winners include Sweden’s Abba in 1974 and Switzerland’s Celine Dion in 1988.

Jason Bateman, fresh off his Emmy Award win for Best Directing in a Drama Series for Netflix’s Ozark, is in talks to direct the live-action remake of the classic murder mystery film Clue. Bateman is also looking to star in the film alongside Ryan Reynolds, who was previously cast.
The film is set up at Fox/Disney and Allspark Pictures. It’s based on the Hasbro board game and Bateman will also work on the script with Reynolds, who is also a producer on the project. Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were previously hired to write the script.

Last year we reported that Will Ferrell had signed on to star in a movie for Netflix entitled Eurovision.
The story is based on the "wildly popular and long-running international TV music competition The Eurovision Song Contest. It is a contest that began in Switzerland in 1956, when seven West European nations participated. This year 43 countries competed for the prize, won in Lisbon by Netta (Israel) performing the song Toy. Abba (winner in 1974 for Sweden) and Céline Dion (winner in 1988 for Switzerland) are among the former contestants who launched successful worldwide careers after their wins at The Eurovision Song Contest."
We already knew that Ferrell was writing the script alongside Andrew Steele, known for his time as writer and head-writer at SNL and his comedic collaborations with Ferrell in the past, writing the ridiculously hilarious The Spoils of Babylon, The Royal Wedding Live With Cord and Tish!, and the spoof Lifetime movie,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… This rushed sequel is an insult to its progenitor movie. A cheap knockoff that doesn’t understand what made Bad Moms so smart, funny, and feminist-wise. I’m “biast” (pro): love the first movie

When Caleb and Camille go missing, Baxter and Annie return to their family home after years of being estranged to investigate their disappearance, and to discover if it’s a ruse or if it’s genuine. The incoherent mess known as Criminal is rescued from disaster by a game cast. Seasoned pros join hot younger stars to elevate a ridiculous script, keeping what could have (and should have) been a train wreck mostly on track and lending Criminal far more credibility than it deserves.

The success of 20th Century Fox's Deadpool this weekend is sure to send shockwaves throughout the industry, as the film shattered certain preconceived notions. I think we need to take a few moments to really digest exactly what's gone down here, as it's fairly remarkable.
Let's stack up where Deadpool stands compared to the first films of Hollywood's other modern day favorite superheroes, in terms of opening weekends.
[Bar Graph That Annoyingly Doesn't Show On The Mobile Version of The Site That Demonstrates The Things I'm Going To Mention Below. Long Story Short: Deadpool did better than everyone you can think of in their modern era debut films.]
Yes. You're seeing that correctly. Deadpool did better business in its opening weekend than pop culture icons like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man- all considered to be among the most recognizable fictional characters on the planet earth. And in terms of the vaunted faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'd have to add up two of their Phase One solo films (three if you exclude Iron Man) to top Deadpool.
But that's not all...
The figures for Fox's flick are even more stunning...

In case The Change-Up and Self/less didn’t fill your quotient of Ryan Reynolds body-swapping movies, this spring brings yet another. While the Deadpool actor is mostly left out of the marketing materials for Criminal, it is his character’s mind and skills that get transplanted into that of Kevin Costner‘s character of a death row inmate.
Ahead of an April release, we now have the first trailer for the film which also features Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, and Gal Gadot. Coming from Ariel Vromen, who gave us The Iceman a few years back, the trailer sells a fairly run-of-the-mill high-concept actioner, but with a strong cast, hopefully it’ll be one that’s worthwhile. Check out the trailer and poster below.
Criminal opens on April 15th, 2016.

Is Ryan Reynolds having an identity crisis?
Last year, he starred in Self/Less, in which Ben Kingsley implants his memories into Reynolds' younger body. Now Reynolds is in a new movie called Criminal, a film in which he puts his memories into Kevin Costner's body. And both of these come after the 2011 film The Change-Up, in which he switches bodies with Jason Bateman after the two of them pee into the same magic fountain.
In any case, here's the Criminal trailer, which features Costner as some sort of badass operative and has a pretty stacked cast that includes Tommy Lee Jones, Gal Gadot, Alice Eve, Michael Pitt, and Gary Oldman. Still, I can't quite shake the fact that this looks like a direct-to-video action movie. Criminal hits theaters on April 15th.

Martial arts dramas, like musicals, can be defined as much by what happens in between all the fancy choreography as the quality of the actual fighting and/or dancing. If the story and characters aren't compelling when they're not twirling and leaping, then it places an enormous burden on the action/music to be so impressive — or, at least, so frequent — that it doesn't feel like a chore waiting for the next big set piece to arrive. "Into the Badlands," AMC's new series set in a dystopian future America where guns have been banned and disputes are settled with some combination of fists, feet, and swords, has some entertaining fight scenes. They're highly-stylized, employing a lot of wire fu and exaggerated effects when limbs are broken or chopped off altogether, and they tend to happen in the most dramatic conditions — a torrential downpour in an alley, an abandoned factory lit...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Sniper (Clint Eastwood)
Where a lot of recent Eastwood pictures (Changeling, Hereafter, even Jersey Boys) contain patches of awkwardness, American Sniper — particularly in its war sequences, which Joel Cox and Gary Roach edit with white-knuckle precision — exhibits a riveting level of control. This may just be the result of well-matched material (a character study about a born-and-bred cowboy nicknamed “the Legend” could hardly be more...
