Ed Helms in Cedar Rapids (2011)

Cedar Rapids

Ed Helms and John C. Reilly's Feel-Good Comedy With 86% on Rotten Tomatoes Is a Forgotten Gem of the Early 2010s
Image
Film fans often lament the lack of new comedy movies on the release calendar nowadays. The straightforward, character-driven, and reliably funny 90-minute comedy sort of seems like a thing of the past. This makes movies like Miguel Arteta's somewhat-forgotten film, Cedar Rapids, feel like a refreshing return to a bygone era when viewed today, even though it was released less than 15 years ago. The 2011 film stars Ed Helms in his first true leading role on the big screen. Despite receiving generally positive reviews upon its release — it currently has an 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes — Cedar Rapids earned less than $8 million at the worldwide box office. This lack of popularity is unfortunate, as Cedar Rapids deserves a legacy similar to some of the more beloved films of its era. Like many of the movies from that time, Arteta's film derives its success from a screenplay that gets the most out of a simple story,...

Family Switch Cast & Character Guide
Image
"Family Switch" is a chaotic Christmas comedy film that puts a twist on the body-swap genre, with the entire Walker family switching bodies. Jennifer Garner shines in her role as the meticulous and organized mother, Jess Walker, who learns that her way isn't always the best for everyone. The supporting cast in "Family Switch" includes talented actors like Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon, who deliver comedic performances that add to the fun of the film.

Netflix's Family Switch brought together some excellent talent to tell the story of the Walker family, with several additional stars getting in on the action as well. The film puts an added twist on body-swap films like Freaky Friday, 13 Going on 30, 17 Again, and The Change-Up by making the entire Walker family switch bodies with another member. This means that the central actors of Family Switch not only had to master...

The world is never a nice place in the stories of Roald Dahl. Across the beloved British author's vast body of literature, one will find works about abusive caretakers, sadistic authority figures, and horrible fantasy characters itching to do harm to children. Just as often, though, his tales center on courageous kids and kindly adults willing and able to stand up to these bad grownups and terrifying monsters. It's why Dahl's writing continues to resonate with younger generations, despite the ongoing struggle to reconcile the timeless messages of his novels and short stories with Dahl's many failings as a human being.

Having acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company back in 2021, Netflix has a financial motive for keeping Dahl's stories alive and well in the general public's memory. The streamer has already released a well-received film adaptation of the "Matilda" stage musical based on Dahl's book of the same name,...

Anne Heche
Anne Heche Cause of Death Confirmed
Anne Heche
Anne Heche's tragic death following a car crash earlier this month left many with questions.

Now, we have some clarity.

The death of the Men in Trees star at 53 has officially been ruled an accident.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner released a report on Wednesday confirming as much.

Heche's cause of death is listed as inhalation and thermal injuries from a fiery car crash earlier this month.

What's more, the report states that it was an accident.

It says that Heche suffered a "sternal fracture due to blunt trauma" from the car crash.

Sternal fractures typically occur after the chest strikes the steering wheel in motor vehicle collisions.

Heche was behind the wheel of her Mini Cooper when she crashed into a home in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles.

The car and the home caught fire.

It was so severe that it took 59 firefighters over an hour to control.

Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro and Ed Helms Remember Anne Heche: “A Truly Epic, Vibrant Spirit and a Profound Talent”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro, Ed Helms, and James Tupper were among the Hollywood stars who shared their remembrances and tributes on social media following the news of actress Anne Heche’s death.

Heche, who starred in the movies Donnie Brasco, Volcano and Wag the Dog and in smaller screen projects like All Rise, Hung and Men in Trees, died on Friday at the age of 53. She was taken off life support on Sunday, according to her rep, after spending several days in a coma at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills (California) Hospital and Medical Center. On Aug. 12, she was determined to be brain dead, which is legally dead by California law. However, the actress was kept on life support to see if she was a match for organ donation.

On Aug. 5, Heche smashed into a two-story home in L.A.

Anne Heche Remembered: A Sad End to a Beautifully Human Hollywood Story (Column)
Image
The news that Anne Heche has been declared legally dead from the injuries she sustained in an Aug. 5 car crash comes as a particularly baleful end to her story. There’s not merely the obvious element of human tragedy for Heche and her family, as well as, it ought to be said, the woman whose house Heche destroyed with her car. But Heche’s final days playing out in a spectacle of tabloid interest and ambiguity around her state of mind comes as an eerie echo of various moments throughout her life in public. Heche was a star dimmed and diminished by the aura of scandal that she couldn’t shake — and one who, despite that, tried unrelentingly to bring the audience into her world.

Heche was, first, a gifted performer; she went from being an Emmy-winning soap star to film stardom in the late 1990s and seemed, with lead...

At the time of the statement, it was revealed Heche was being kept on life support as doctors determined if any of her organs were viable for donation.

"She is not expected to survive."

"It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she's being kept on life support to determine if any are viable," the statement continues.

Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”

Earlier: Anne Heche has been declared legally dead at the age of 53, TMZ reports, a week after a car crash that took place in Los Angeles on Friday, August 5. Anne Heche
In the wake of suffering a severe brain injury one week ago as a result of a devastating car crash, it’s being reported today that Anne Heche has tragically passed away.

The actress was just 53 years old, leaving behind two children.

“Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit,” Heche’s reps said in a statement. “More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love. Heche had been in a coma since the crash in L.A.’s Mar Vista neighborhood on Friday, August 5. She had been under investigation for reportedly driving under the influence.

Here’s What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in April 2022
Outer Range (2022)
If you’re looking for new movies and TV shows to watch on Amazon Prime Video in April, you’ve come to the right place. This month doesn’t bring a ton in terms of new Prime Video originals, but there are a few noteworthy titles. “Outer Range,” premiering April 15, is a new series that’s essentially “Yellowstone” but sci-fi. Josh Brolin plays a rancher fighting for his land in Wyoming who encounters a supernatural twist.

There’s also “A Very British Scandal,” which stars Claire Foy and Paul Bettany and focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Dutchess of Argyll, and the second season of the animated series “Undone” on April 29.

In terms of Prime Video movies, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in the thriller ”All the Old Knives” which is streaming on April 8, and noteworthy library titles being added in April include “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: April 2022
Josh Brolin
Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.

The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.

Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: September 2021
Image
Though the summer movie season is winding down (if it ever really started this year), Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for September 2021 is chock full of worthwhile movie options.

For starters, Amazon’s library movie titles are quite good this month. September 1 sees the arrivals of heavyweights such as Apollo 13, Arachnophobia, Romeo + Juliet, The Descent, and The Social Network. And if that weren’t enough, the streamer is trying out some intriguing original movies as well. Cinderella, a modern update on the classic fairy tale, premieres on September 3. That will be followed by “exotic thriller” The Voyeurs (Sept. 10), musical adaptation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (Sept. 17), and French thriller The Mad Woman’s Ball (Sept. 17).

Sony Pictures Gives Its Soundstages a State-of-the-Art Upgrade
Image
The sound production facilities at Sony Pictures have received an update to incorporate state-of-the-art technology. Television mix stages 6 and 7 now support Dolby Home Theater Atmos (9.1.6) and Dolby mixes with Imax support integrated.

“You have to have the right technology. You have to be able to give the talent the tools they need to succeed, and have clients and filmmakers want to work with them,” says Tom McCarthy, Sony’s exec VP of post-production facilities, who was a sound editor on films including “Arachnophobia” and “Lean on Me.”

The increase in streaming clients for episodic television production is driving the need for the Atmos upgrade. McCarthy hopes to renovate one more stage over the next year; so far, 10 of the 14 stages have been upgraded to meet the demand.

Lane Burch (who worked as a foley mixer on movies such as “National Security” and “Road to Perdition”), Sony’s executive director of post-production sound engineering,...

Together Together – Review
Image
This week’s new release explores a fairly familiar premise in cinema, but with a fresh, modern angle (you can bet that things are truly complicated in this still somewhat new century). To borrow from the old, classic slang for public education, this flick covers the “three R’s”. The subject and the dialogue especially (rather than the imagery) can get fairly graphic, so the “R” rating is pretty much a given. And it is very heavy into relationships, mainly the two very different people at its core. Plus, in the broadest of definitions, this work is a twist on the “rom-com”, though its marketing would suggest a lesser emphasis on the “rom” part. There is the frothy “will they” idea in its premise of a man and a woman entering into an arrangement that skirts into that territory. But don’t look for high gloss “glitz and glamour” here...

For 24 Hours, Kids Make the Rules in 'Yes Day' Comedy Film Trailer
Jennifer Garner, Edgar Ramírez, Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner, and Everly Carganilla in Yes Day (2021)
"See, I'm not always a 'fun-killer!'" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the family comedy Yes Day, from director Miguel Arteta. This is what happens when you finally say "yes" to your kids instead of "no" all the time. Always feeling like they have to say No to their kids and co-workers, Allison and Carlos decide to give their three kids a "Yes Day" -- where for 24 hours the kids make the rules. Little did they know that they'd be going on a whirlwind adventure around Los Angeles, that would bring the family closer to each other than ever before. Oh I don't know, that sounds exactly like what I expect from this let's-go-wild plot. Starring Jennifer Garner, Edgar Ramírez, Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner, and Everly Carganilla. This looks amusing and extra ridiculous. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Miguel Arteta's Yes Day, direct from ...

‘Together Together’ Film Review: Patti Harrison Delivers Star-Making Performance in Surrogacy Comedy
Patti Harrison
If you’re a fan of Patti Harrison’s scene-stealing work on “Shrill” — or a devotee of the brilliant shock-humor of her Twitter feed — you’ll be delighted but not entirely surprised by her stellar work in “Together Together,” a movie that gives her the space to be hilarious, yes, but also heartbreaking and human.

The comedy from writer-director Nikole Beckwith, making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, leaps into the world with all the attributes audiences expect from a character-based comedy: It’s bright and witty and packed with laughs, but those laughs stem from real empathy and understanding of its characters.

Harrison stars as Anna, who’s serving as surrogate for Silicon Valley bachelor Matt (Ed Helms); he’s ready for fatherhood even if he doesn’t currently have a partner. Harrison’s deadpan and Helms’ dorky enthusiasm clash early and often, as Matt’s perpetual efforts...

Producer Jim Burke speaks at "The Decendants" press conference during the 55th BFI London Film Festival at Odeon West End on October 20, 2011 in London, England.
Exclusive: Focus Features and Green Book producer Jim Burke are teaming up to produce music biopic Dreamin’ Wild, which will be written and directed by Bill Pohlad (Love & Mercy).

Based on a long-read article by Steven Kurutz in mini-magazine True Story, the blue-chip movie prospect will follow the real-life story of musical duo Donnie and Joe Emerson, whose family leveraged their farm in the 1970s in order to produce the brothers’ record, Dreamin’ Wild. The album, an eclectic mix of rock, soul, R&B, country and funk, went on to be wildly unknown until it was rediscovered nearly thirty years after the release, igniting an unexpected music career for the Emerson brothers.

Focus will develop and produce alongside former Focus production president Burke under his Innisfree Pictures banner. Steven Snyder will oversee production for Innisfree and Josh McLaughlin will oversee for Focus. Cast has yet to be set.

New Clip From Ralph Breaks The Internet Introduces KnowsMore and There's a "Happy Birthday, Internet" Promo
Disney has released a new clip from Ralph Breaks The Internet. The clip features a fun scene where Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) come across the Internet search bar, which is where they meet a new character by the name of KnowsMore, who is voiced by Alan Tudyk.

I also included a new promo spot for the film called “Happy Birthday, Internet” and as you might suspect from the title, it celebrates the day the Internet was born, October 29th, 1969, which also happens to also be the the first time that the Internet crashed. It’s a brief but amusing history lesson.

You can watch both of the videos below:

In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video-game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and best friend Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) leave the comforts of Litwak’s arcade in an attempt to save her game,...

Ralph Breaks The Internet Adds Gal Gadot To Cast
©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Gal Gadot revealed today that she is voicing the character Shank, a tough and talented driver in an intense and gritty online racing game called Slaughter Race, in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” which hits theaters this Thanksgiving.

Ralph and Vanellope encounter Shank and her unusual cohorts when they venture to the internet in search of a replacement part for Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush. Shank, a tough-as-nails street racer, takes her role and her tricked-out car very seriously and doesn’t like to lose. When Vanellope finds herself in a street race with Shank, her Sugar Rush driving skills are put to the test—and Shank is impressed. “She is the coolest character in this world of Slaughter Race,” said director Rich Moore. “Shank’s lived a lot, she’s seen a lot, yet she’s got nothing but kindness in her...

Tiffany Haddish Comedy ‘Limited Partners’ Taps Director Miguel Arteta
Tiffany Haddish
Paramount has tapped Miguel Arteta to direct the upcoming Tiffany Haddish comedy “Limited Partners.”

The studio announced in May that it had pulled “Transformers 7” from its June 28, 2019, release date, and slotted Haddish’s comedy “Limited Partners” in its place. Paramount set up the project last fall with writers Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly. The story centers on two female friends who build a successful company, then find their relationship tested following a buyout offer.

Peter Principato, Itay Reiss, and Joel Zadak are producing through Artists First, the re-named Principato-Young. Haddish is an executive producer and helped develop the script.

Haddish broke out in last year’s “Girls Trip” and will star in two comedies this fall: Universal’s “Night School” with Kevin Hart on Sept. 28 and Paramount’s Tyler Perry comedy “Nobody’s Fool,” opening Nov. 2. She’s also joining Hart in the voice cast of Universal’s “Secret...

New Trailer for ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’ Breaks The Internet
Disney has released a new trailer and poster for ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2‘, the much anticipated sequel to 2012’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph’. The sequel picks up when Ralph and Vanellope must travel to the world wide web in search of a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush.

Although the trailer itself is pretty light on story, there’s a lot of fun to be had with it. Even though it’s only been six years since the release of the original film, the even further rise to prominence of social media seems to play a big part in the sequel. I’m loving the inclusion of the Daft Punk music that accompanies this trailer, but where it really shines is with the comedy. I think that there’s a lot of great situations to be had with Ralph and Vanellope in both being stuck in the fish out of water position.

Duck Butter (2018)
Alia Shawkat Made ‘Duck Butter’ Queer After Male Actors ‘Seemed Uncomfortable’ With Intimate Sex Scenes
Duck Butter (2018)
“Duck Butter” may be about an experiment with sex and intimacy, but the movie itself became an experiment in putting sex and intimacy on film. Directed by Miguel Arteta (“Beatriz at Dinner”) and written by Arteta and Alia Shawkat, “Duck Butter” stars Shawkat and Laia Costa as two strangers who decide to have sex every hour for 24 hours in the hopes of accelerating their romantic entanglement. Naima (Shawkat) is the straight person (so to speak), an aspiring actor captivated by Sergio (Costa), a whimsical musician who comes up with the idea for the experiment.

“I wanna know you for real,” Sergio says, selling the plan to Naima. “I wanna come with you every hour. We can fucking skip time.” As the women fall further down the rabbit hole, they travel through the stages of a relationship as if in fast forward. They are tender and giggly, sharing stories of past relationships and artistic ambitions,...

Medical Mystery: Military Veterans Are Twice as Likely to Develop Als—Inside the Search for Answers
Ed Helms in Cedar Rapids (2011)
In the early 1990s, when Maj. Randy Hebert of the U.S. Marine Corps was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, his body suddenly began to fail him. In truth, his hands had become too wilted to fasten buttons or tie his boots, leaving him unable to get dressed without another officer’s help. Eventually, he would be diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Als.
