Top Chef leads the field with five nominations for the fourth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, which were announced today. Netflix scooped a dozen noms to top all networks and platforms.
Launched in 2019, the Critics Choice Real TV Awards celebrate programming across platforms and also recognize industry leaders with special awards highlighting career achievements. The 2022 ceremony hosted by Randy and Jason Sklar is set for June 12 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
“Given its ongoing popularity across broadcast and cable networks, streaming services and other platforms, it’s clear that unscripted programming is deserving of special recognition by the Critics Choice Association,” said Ed Martin, President of the Critics Choice Association’s TV Branch. “The exciting programs and diverse personalities selected by our five nominating committees represent the best that this multi-faceted genre has to offer.”

Exclusive: Ashley Hoppin, who oversaw animal-based programming across Nat Geo and Disney+, has joined Red Rock Films, the company behind Sigourney Weaver-narrated Secrets of the Whales.
Hoppin, who spent close to 20 years at the factual giant, will steer content creation for the production company as it looks to expand future capabilities.
It comes after the company won the Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series Emmy for Secrets of the Whales.
Hoppin was previously VP, Production at Nat Geo, where she oversaw over 1,000 hours of content including Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Savage Kingdom, Hidden Kingdoms of China and Wild Yellowstone.
Red Rock Films is also behind Netflix’s Penguin Town, Nat Geo’s Shark Attack Files and World’s Biggest Bull Shark and Discovery’s MotherSharker.
Her appointment follows several recent hires and promotions including Sari Wiener as Senior Vice President of Production Management and Kevin Krug to Director of Operations.

Penguins are perfect. Sardine-saturated floaties with ridiculous flappers and leather toes, the flightless birds are God’s most beautiful mistake.
That’s undoubtedly why the tuxedo bois have become a fixture of nature documentaries, starring in full-length features like March of the Penguins and Disney’s Penguins. Now Netflix’s new docuseries Penguin Town, narrated by Patton Oswalt, is betting on the unshakable fact that pop culture can never have too many penguins. Penguin Town bets correctly.
“They’re incredibly clumsy because they’ve got short little legs,” Penguin Town field producer Cayley Christos says. “They’re almost like bouncing balls. They’ll walk along in a line and several of them will make the same fall and stumble, which is hysterical to watch.”
It’s never a bad time for penguins. But after the rough year that was, now might really be the time for nature’s unwitting comedians to shine.
