- TriviaABC loved both the show pitch from Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan (a series with three family structures: a traditional similar-age WASP couple with kids, a May-December marriage with a step-kid, and a same-sex relationship who had just adopted a daughter) and the pilot episode so much that the network took the unprecedented step of showing the entire pilot at the upfront meetings for advertisers. It was so well-received that ABC then renewed the show for a 2nd season without even waiting for the Nielsen ratings for the pilot airing (which were excellent).
- GoofsIn the scene where Dylan visits Haley at home, when Claire grabs Dylan as he's going up the stairs you can see a member of the crew in the mirror in the background behind Claire.
- Quotes
Claire Dunphy: Honey, do you have anything to say to your daughter about her skirt?
Phil Dunphy: Sorry. Oh yeah, that looks really cute sweetheart.
Claire Dunphy: No, it's way too short. People know you're a girl; you don't need to prove it to them.

Modern Family" kicks off with a brilliant introduction to its quirky ensemble cast and unique storytelling style. In the pilot episode, we meet the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan, a diverse family that spans generations and lifestyles, setting the stage for the humor and heart that the series is known for.
The episode cleverly uses a mockumentary format, allowing characters to speak directly to the camera, which adds a layer of intimacy and humor. Each family unit-Jay and his young Colombian wife Gloria, their son Manny; Claire and Phil Dunphy with their three kids; and Mitchell and Cameron raising their adopted daughter Lily-offers a distinct perspective on family life, showcasing both the chaos and joy that comes with it.
What stands out in this episode is how relatable the characters are. Phil's goofy attempts to be the "cool dad" juxtaposed with Claire's more practical approach highlights the challenges of parenting. Meanwhile, Jay's struggle to connect with his much younger wife and her son provides a humorous yet poignant look at love and age differences.
