Brainy political lightning rod Oliver Stone isn’t making feature films anymore. Sure, he’d love to add a 21st to his 20 films to date; he just can’t find backers. His alternate route, like many other directors today, from fellow Cannes entrant Ron Howard (“Jim Henson: Idea Man”) to Martin Scorsese, is documentaries.
Stone has churned out a career total of ten, including recent 2021 Cannes entry “JFK Revisited” (Showtime) and 2022 eco-doc “Nuclear” (Abramorama). His latest, “Lula,” marks a move to the left from his much-criticized recent portraits of dictators such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro (HBO’s “Comandante”) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (Showtime’s four-part “The Putin Interviews”).
Since his start as a filmmaker in the 1970s, the Yale-grad-turned-Vietnam-vet, now 77, has leaned into political fiction, from “Salvador,” “Wall Street,” and “W.,” to Best Director Oscar-winners “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” His last Oscar nomination came in 1996, for “Nixon,...

Taylor Swift has broken yet another record with Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).
The superstar is the first living artist in nearly 60 years to have at least four albums at the same time in the top 10 on Billboard’s 200 chart. Midnights, Lover and Folklore join Swift’s newest album on the chart, where it sits at No. 1.
The only other living artist to do so was Herb Alpert in 1966 with his albums Going Places, Whipped Cream & Other Delights, South of the Border and The Lonely Bull, according to Billboard. Following Prince’s death in 2016, the star had five albums in the top 10 — The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain, The Hits/The B-Sides, Ultimate and 1999.
Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) marked Swift’s 12th No. 1 album on Billboard’s chart and her third rerecorded and rereleased album, which includes hits like “Mine,” “Dear John,” “Back to December” and “Ours.”

Budd Boetticher’s excellent semi-autobiographical film may be Hollywood’s most uncondescending depiction of high-end Mexican culture. Robert Stack is the pushy Gringo who only slowly understands Latin society’s definitions of loyalty and machismo; his rocky relationship with Joy Page’s cultured señorita is as important as the bullfighting story with Gilbert Roland. It’s Boetticher’s best film, presented for the first time in two encodings, the 87-minute release version and the UCLA Film and TV Archive’s restoration of the full 124-minute seen South of the Border. The extra commentary and featurettes are welcome too.

As Pixar Studios imagineers yet another animated awards contender, you have to wonder when – or if – they’ll ever stumble again (even in the slightest). No company can flawlessly produce film after film of praise-worthy content, can they? Well, considering how Coco is their best release in years (very, Very successful years), you’ll have to *keep* pondering that very query. Silently, from behind streaming tears (once again).
Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina’s festive journey through their splashy “Land Of The Dead” is a touching, massively heartwarming story of the strongest familial variety. David O. Selznick’s absurdly over-cooked western epic is a great picture, even if much of it induces a kind of hypnotic, mouth-hanging-open disbelief. Is this monument to the sex appeal of Jennifer Jones, Kitsch in terrible taste, or have Selznick and his army of Hollywood talents found a new level of hyped melodramatic harmony? It certainly has the star-power, beginning with Gregory Peck as a cowboy rapist who learned his bedside manners from Popeye’s Bluto. It’s all hugely enjoyable.

Oliver Stone and Vladimir Putin are a match made in heaven. Stone’s upcoming documentary series “The Putin Interviews” could be just the project to give the filmmaker’s career the shot in the arm in desperately needs. The director of iconic films like “Platoon” and “JFK” has never wavered from tackling challenging political stories, both documentaries and narrative features, but the results as of late have been lackluster.

“The Putin Interviews,” a four-night series airing on Showtime this June, could change all that. While Stone has always been an outspoken critic of governments around the world, the recent rise of issues like surveillance, hacking and cyberwarfare have made him even more energized, and concerned, about current events.
“What’s going on right now is pretty shocking,” Stone said at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Oliver Stone has interviewed Russian president Vladimir Putin more than a dozen times over the past two years. Now, Stone and his documentary producer Fernando Sulichin have turned those chats into “The Putin Interviews,” a four-hour documentary series airing over four nights this June on Showtime.
Check out a first look at “The Putin Interviews” below. Stone most recently interviewed Putin in February, after the U.S. presidential elections (in which Putin and Russia are believed to have actively influenced). Showtime compares “The Putin Interviews” to David Frost’s famed conversations with Richard Nixon in 1977.
Stone and Sulichin were granted wide access to Putin’s personal and professional lives. “It’s not a documentary as much as a question and answer session,” Stone told the Sydney Morning Herald. “”It opens up a whole viewpoint that we as Americans haven’t heard… He talks pretty straight. Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. A24 will open Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s The Captive day and date after an early fall bow in the director’s native Canada. Sundance Selects will expose Free The Nipple in New York...

It’s the story of South American hero, Simon Bolivar (Edgar Ramirez). When we first meet the man, he’s on the run from assassins after re-uniting with his lover/ freedom-fighting partner Manuela (Juana Acosta). But what led him to this point? Flashback to his visit to the court of Spain several years before. The plantation owner from across the Atlantic bests the King and romances future wife Maria (Maria Valverde). Covering Fantasia for the first time was a hectic, enjoyable experience. They give you a badge with your name on it and everything. However, as for this year’s lineup, I have a little trouble being enthusiastic. With some major exceptions like Guardians of Galaxy, not listed here only because it’s appearance at the Festival seemed more coincidental than prestigious, a lot of the hyped up releases played weakly. Also, I’ve been no stranger to openly criticizing Fantasia audiences as a whole, more than willing to behave as sheep (or, in this case, cats) and applaud even the weakest of films due to a genre-note or laugh –however unintentional. So I found respite in some of the quieter films, and maybe a few major ones. No matter; Here are five things that truly deserve to gain wider audiences.

In a move that could make for the hottest political thriller since Ben Affleck’s Argo, Oliver Stone has taken on the task of bringing Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden’s story to the big screen.
Never one to shy away from political or controversial issues, Stone’s career heights have seen him tackle the Vietnam War (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July), Us Presidents (JFK, W., Nixon), Cuban leader Fidel Castro (Comandante, Looking for Fidel), and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez (South of the Border).
Recent efforts like Savages and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps have largely been regarded as minor works from the renowned filmmaker, and taking on a project like Snowden’s story has ignited hope that Stone is about to return to form.

By this point in time, it seems that every conceivable World War II story had been told – from South of the Border, made in 1939 about an American agent working to prevent Nazis from seizing control of Mexican oil fields, to this year’s Monuments Men, George Clooney’s ode to the men trying to preserve Europe’s cultural heritage. But still, nearly 70 years after it ended, the second world war continues to deliver material for Hollywood to sink its claws into.

While the Summer may be known for big budget sci-fi action superhero blockbusters, it’s also been the home for big studio comedies, perhaps going all the way back 35 years ago with National Lampoon’S Animal House. As this movie season wraps up we’ve had an equal share of hits (The Heat, This Is The End) and misses (The Hangover III, Grown Ups 2). The same can be said of the lower budget indie comedies with the delightful The Way Way Back and the dismal Girl Must Likely. And so, opening this week is We’Re The Millers which, like the former films, stars several well-known names in TV comedies. And like a couple of them, it also could be a “stoner comedy”. Will spending a couple of hours at the multiplex with The Millers provide a nice mellow buzz, or will this be a harsh “bad trip”? Let...

Back in February I had the opportunity to visit the Graceland set with a handful of other reporters. While on the ground in Miami, we observed shooting, rummaged around the impressive sets and spoke with all the stars. Each of whom kept returning to a similar sentiment: that the show truly hits its stride with episode five, which happens to air tonight!
Titled O-Mouth, the episode features Mike getting deeper into Bello's organization, while Briggs and Charlie resume their former identities as a sexually-charged couple to get intel on a mysterious drug supplier called Odin. A situation that star Manny Montana says will help clearly define the next stretch of episodes!

The life of Hugo Chávez is coming to the silver screen.
U.S. director and Latin American politics aficionado Oliver Stone will direct a film about the life of the late Venezuelan leader, the Associated Press reports.
“Oliver Stone is making a very beautiful film about our commander Hugo Chávez,” Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said Thursday, according to the Associated Press. He said the film would be finished within the next few months.
The three-time Oscar winner already portrayed Chávez on the big screen for the 2010 documentary “South of the Border,” about leftwing governments in Latin America.
Stone has a thing for leftwing Latin American strongmen. He’s also filmed a pair of documentaries about Cuba’s former Communist dictator Fidel Castro.
Chávez died on March 5 after a two-year long struggle with a cancer in his pelvic region that he never publicly identified.
