Halle Berry stars a desperate mother in Alexandre Aja’s latest horror film. Watch the first Never Let Go trailer below.
Switchblade Romance, Alexandre Aja’s gnarly slasher, made the French director into a talent to watch in 2003. After that, Aja has created a successful career in Hollywood, earning him a reputation of being able to turn out solid genre fare on time and with a relatively small budget.
Never Let Go, Lionsgate’s latest horror film, might just be his scariest film to date. Starring Halle Berry as a desperate mother, trying to keep her sons safe from an unseen evil, it all looks absolutely terrifying.
See for yourself. Watch the first Never Let Go trailer below.
Written by Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the film looks economically made with a small cast, few locations but maximum scares. Aja directed 2021’s Oxygen for Netflix, another film that kept things...

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. Last month, Lionsgate unveiled a teaser poster, which can be seen at the bottom of this article, and announced they will be giving Never Let Go a theatrical release on September 27th. Now a tailer for the film has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above!

Prime Video’s latest sensation, the Fallout TV show sparked a new interest to the iconic video game franchise in millions of people who haven’t even heard about it previously — and launched quite a few careers sky-high. One of the show’s lead stars, Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) found herself under the spotlight thanks to it…
Except that in 2014, the young actress was already working with Angelina Jolie.
Ella Purnell Starred in Maleficent
You read it right: the Fallout lead star did a movie with Angelina Jolie back in the day, and not just any movie. 2014’s Maleficent, one of Jolie’s last movies before she effectively quit acting, saw Ella Purnell play the same character as the former queen of Hollywood — Purnell starred in it as the younger version of Maleficent herself.

The Star Wars film series is still expanding and has grown in recognition over the years. Innumerable actors have contributed to the property as the galaxy far, far away continues to grow through projects for both small and large screens. Some of them even lose track of how they came to be cast in the first place. Take Keira Knightley, for example.
Known for her acclaimed performances in Pride and Prejudice and The Imitation Game, the actress, 39, also had a role in the Star Wars film franchise that was a long-kept secret.
Keira Knightley in Love Actually
Surprisingly, Knightley’s involvement in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) wasn’t a big deal at the time, as she was not a known face playing a bit part in the background. Even more intriguingly, she was cast for the role because of how much she resembled Natalie Portman when...

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

Alex Garland is a director who you either love or hate. But regardless of how you feel about him, it’s likely you can’t stop arguing about him. And the English filmmaker has certainly given audiences something to argue about again with his latest film, “Civil War.”
Set in an unspecified future/alternate history, “Civil War” focuses on an armed conflict across America that has caused the nation to splinter. But what exactly caused the conflict, as well as what the opposing militias are fighting for, is a question the movie — which takes the form of a travelogue journeying with a group of reporters across America and through the bloodshed — has absolutely zero interest in answering. Instead, Garland zeroes in on recreating scenes of violence that Americans have witnessed via photographs and video on foreign soil, now in a much closer context, in an effect that’s alternatively been...

Creator Victor Levin and star Andrea Riseborough discussed their Masterpiece on PBS miniseries Alice & Jack at Deadline Contenders TV on Saturday. Riseborough plays Alice and Domhnall Gleeson plays Jack in the six-episode show that follows their relationship over 16 years. Riseborough said she often is frustrated that most conventional love stories worry about making the characters likable and perfectly moral.
“I know when I’m in love, I’m a total idiot and have no ability to behave even remotely like a normal human,” she said. “Everyone deserves to be a protagonist in their own love story.”
Riseborough acknowledged that Alice tends to close herself off to Jack’s love.
“I think we do that,” she said. “If you have the courage, you can courageously, truly love someone, you often protect them from yourself in certain ways. She has quite a lot of damage. In the most loving way, although the fallout is very painful,...

Alex Garland may have said that he’s not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future, but he is currently directing another film while his movie Civil War heads out into the world and he works on the scripts for the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy (a follow-up to his Danny Boyle collaboration 28 Days Later). Garland’s new directorial effort is called Warfare, and he’s co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. As Warfare moves forward, Deadline has just revealed the names of several cast members: Noah Centineo (The Recruit), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Taylor John Smith (Where the Crawdads Sing), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn), Henrique Zaga (The Stand), and Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures).

Hailing from the visionary minds behind Westworld, Lisa Joy, and Jonathan Nolan, the series unfolds in the aftermath of a devastating nuclear exchange in an alternate history. Update: A trailer for Never Let Go was shown during the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon today, and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance. Here’s a description of what he saw: “Halle Berry and her two kids are living in a cabin after the world ends. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. His distinctive style led him to become a film writer in Hollywood where he formed a very successful collaboration with director Danny Boyle in films like 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go.

Before making a splash as a feature film director, Alex Garland wrote two of Danny Boyle’s great films 28 Days Later, and Sunshine. In the 2010s, he wrote the Andrew Garfield romance film Never Let Me Go and the modern iteration of Judge Dredd titled Dredd. He made his directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina which has been considered one of the best sci-fi films of the 2010s.

The latter proved to be the most popular and successful one among the three. However, Garland didn’t expect the novel to become as big as it did and it made him uncomfortable.

After a successful premiere in March, Alex Garland’s upcoming dystopian action thriller Civil War is preparing for its April 12, 2024 theatrical release. The movie promises to be a very interesting take on a (not so) alternative America, plagued by a civil war between the separatist “Western Forces” led by Texas and California and the government. This “Second American Civil War” will be shown through the eyes of a journalist who travels around the country, experiencing the horrors of war.
The official synopsis for the movie describes the plot as follows: “A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”
The movie has some big names attached to the project, as many fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming premiere. The cast of the movie includes:

Another gorgeous new supercut video created & edited by the talented Luís Azevedo. The Colours Of Alex Garland (it's spelled "colours" because Little White Lies is a UK film magazine) is a supercut looking at the many colors and images in Alex Garland movies – a sci-fi visionary. They created this for the upcoming release of Alex Garland's latest movie Civil War, opening in theaters worldwide this April. Civil War is the fourth movie he has directed, following Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Men (2022); he also directed the series "Devs" (2022) for FX / Hulu. Before getting into directing, Garland also wrote the scripts for 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012) - though none of these are included in this supercut. The video also uses the "ambient" color mode feature where a solid color appears around the video in the middle of the frame. Just makes me want to watch all of these movies again.

A fun piece of trivia you'll often hear about "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" is that Keira Knightley played Queen Padmé Amidala's handmaiden, Sabé. The character was notable because of how much she looked like Padmé; it allowed her to be easily disguised as the Queen during risky trips into enemy territory. Sabé's job was basically to make sure that if anyone tried to assassinate the real Queen, they'd kill her instead; it's not the best job in the world, but we're sure it pays well.
At the time, Knightley's involvement in the film wasn't noteworthy. It would be another two years before she starred in "Prince of Thieves," and another two years before she got her breakout role in "Pirates of the Caribbean." Back in 1999, she was an unknown actress playing a bit part, notable only in that she looked like Natalie Portman if you put them in the same makeup and outfit.

Carey Mulligan has more than lived up to her promise. The English actor was an obvious, stand-out talent early in her career, whether she was playing one of the Bennett sisters in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation or in an acclaimed one-episode appearance in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” When 2009 saw her receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in the acclaimed drama “An Education,” it seemed to mark the emergence of a great new young actor.
And since that breakthrough, Mulligan has only continued to go from strength to strength. An actor’s actor with the ability to fully embody the complicated women she’s often cast as, Mulligan consistently picks interesting, juicy parts, in films as varied as “Never Let Me Go,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Mudbound.” As she’s gotten a little older and aged out of the young ingenue parts...

In 2017, the film Bushwick was released starring Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow. (Trailer)
Bushwick tells the story of twenty-year- old Lucy (Snow) and war veteran Stupe (Bautista). There’s an argument to be made that thought-provoking writer/director Alex Garland is the most influential sci-fi filmmaker of his generation. "Rick and Morty" season 7 has been a big surprise, giving us some of the best episodes since the show's earliest seasons. After the Justin Roiland controversy that ended with his firing, it feels like nothing has changed, and yet everything has changed too. While the voice acting features a seamless transition to two new unknown actors as the titular characters, the writing feels sharper and more balanced. There is a great blend of bizarre sci-fi plots with character development, taking Rick's story to new territory.
This has never been a show that prioritizes deep lore or character development, but this season has struck a balance where Rick's character arc has reached a milestone, while also giving us plenty of fun standalone episodes. Episodes with excellent parodies and references, like the "Never Let Me Go" episode, or the trend of Summer going on action movie homage trips -- pulling a "Taken...

Between "Bones and All" and "Yellowjackets," it's been a good few years for lovers of the cannibal genre. What is it about humans eating other humans that captivates audiences so much? Well, I can think of a few explanations, but probably the biggest is the way the concept makes us reflect on our real-world eating habits. Exactly how different is eating a person compared to eating a cow or a pig? We'd certainly love to think it's a big difference, but as the characters on "Yellowjackets" remark on how their friends' roasted body smells like a regular barbecue, it's clear that the gap is a little too small for comfort.
What's the takeaway from such a realization? Well, it's either that eating fellow humans isn't actually that bad — good luck arguing that one in court — or that killing and feasting on animals is indeed pretty terrible despite its mundanity, and...

“It felt like we were reconnecting after a long time,” To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough said today of working with Domhnall Gleeson on Alice & Jack, Channel 4 & PBS Masterpiece’s upcoming romantic drama that premiered at Mipcom Cannes.
Riseborough and Gleeson have worked plenty together down the years including on Never Let Me Go and Shadow Dancer, but hadn’t partnered on a project for some years until the series.
During an Alice & Jack Q&a this evening at Mipcom Cannes, chaired by Deadline’s Joe Utichi, Riseborough said it “felt like were reconnecting after a long time” and this had been obvious from the first scene that the pair did together.
“It was so catapulted and so real,” she added. “It’s strange to be both young and old with someone but I’ve done that with Domhnall and our relationship kind of reflects Alice and Jack’s meeting.

Andrea Riseborough takes on the pleasure and pain of love in Channel 4 series “Alice & Jack,” created by Victor Levin.
“This frustration of really appreciating someone and also not being able to understand them or be understood, that’s such a common connection we have in life,” she tells Variety ahead of the show’s MipCom premiere. She also serves as an executive producer.
“Also, it’s not just frustration – there is excitement as well. It can take you to your highest highs, it’s the most elated feeling in the world and it’s also brutally hard. There is nothing harder than true love.”
That’s what Alice and Jack (Domhnall Gleeson) are about to find out, as following a supposed one-night stand they realize they can’t be together. They also can’t be apart.

Exclusive: Creatives behind Alice & Jack, which stars Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough in the latter’s first role since the To Leslie controversy, have spotlighted how they wanted the Channel 4/Masterpiece TV series to feel like an indie film.
Speaking before Alice & Jack‘s TIFF premiere, Cannes Grand Prix-winning director Juho Kuosmanen and EP Richard Yee explained that the team behind the show, which is penned by Mad Men’s Victor Levin, virtually all came from the world of independent cinema.
The idea for the series was Levin’s and was a passion project of his for years. He developed it with Michael London (Groundswell Productions). Andrea and Domhnall came on board after the pilot script and last episode were written – it was at this point that they met with Levin to discuss the scripts and help develop the characters during the production.

What if someone came to your house and asked you to leave it for good since you did not pay your mortgage or for any other reason, would you leave your family home? Did you even imagine that this kind of situation would ever happen?
This movie will resonate extremely with those people who have been in the exact same situation that Andrew Garfield‘s character goes thru when he loses his family home and everything that he has worked hard for in a matter of 2 minutes. That is the amount of time given by the Realtor Rick Carver played by the enigmatic Michael Shannon. The movie shows how the housing eviction system is not only brutal but has no time to care for anyone’s situation and sheds no tears in the process.

Italian newspaper La Stampa reported on Tuesday that Molko had been cited for calling Meloni a “fascist,” “piece of shit,” and “racist” amidst Placebo’s festival performance, which launched an investigation in regards to the country’s “contempt of the institutions” laws. Variety notes that any critic who “publicly defames the Republic” can incur a fine of 5,000 euros.
Meloni is the highest-ranking member of the far-right political party Brothers of Italy. Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald has been appointed as the new Chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).
As part of the role, Macdonald will lead the formation of a new organization that will deliver Eiff from 2024. Macdonald will now recruit a board and executive team to lead the Festival’s development from September 2023.
Like many Scottish film professionals, Macdonald is an Eiff alum. He worked at the festival in 1992, during which he made a video diary about raising cash to produce his first feature film, Shallow Grave. The film was finally made in 1993 and had its world premiere at Eiff in 1994.
Written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, the film was a box office success and won the BAFTA for Best British Film. Macdonald went on to produce several films with Boyle, including Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, and T2 Trainspotting. Since 1997 he’s headed DNA Films,...

Chile’s Clara Films and Barcelona-based VFX studio Unbound Hub have forged a strategic development pact for the upcoming dystopian TV series, “Numana.”
Created by Argentine writers Jesica Arán (“Pájaros Negros”) and Soledad Velasco (Disney+’s “Dreaming High”), the project participated at Conecta Fiction’s High End Pitch session.
“We are thrilled to partner with Unbound Hub in the development of ‘Numana,’” said producer Clara Larrain of Clara Films.
“Nowadays, investors fear unpredictable budgets that a series like this can mean, so having Unbound Hub on board this early will be instrumental not only in bringing our dystopian vision to life, but in reducing risk.”
“Together, we aim to create an immersive and captivating viewing experience that will maximize production value and simplify our VFX journey,” she added.
“Numana” is set in the year 2069 when babies are made on demand by an all-powerful company called Numana. Alex and Mia are among those babies-on-demand.

Some straight-to-streaming offerings inspire viewers to bemoan the movie’s fate, wishing it had received a proper theatrical release — to be seen the way movies are meant to be seen, and by the widest audience possible. “Crater” isn’t one of those, but neither is this Disney+ original mere algorithm-created dross. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s lunar adventure follows five young friends as they hijack a rover to visit an enigmatic crater for one last hurrah before one of them leaves the moon forever. It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.
The teens of 2257 dress and speak remarkably like those of today, perhaps because those who’ve grown up on the unnamed lunar colony have an unstuck-in-time quality — a result of their home environment having...

Depeche Mode, the post-synth-pop group that made sensual broodiness a part of the mainstream, have returned with a new album titled Memento Mori. You can stream it below.
Memento Mori, their first album in five years, is also their official return after the loss of founding member Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022. Their 15th record and much like many others of the last few years, Memento Mori is rooted in the unexpectedly free time the pandemic granted. The loneliness it bred thematically strings the tracks together, along with some more characteristically defining tropes of the group, like the binary between depuration and delight, and delusive devotion. Production by James Ford and Marta Salogni was key in communicating such rich yet glum atmospheres.
In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1, Dave Gahan touched on how minimalism was a part of the group’s approach to the new album. “Some of...

Kazuo Ishiguro how a “eureka moment” in the back of a London taxi resulted in Oscar nominations.
The author of books including Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go adapted Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese film Ikiru into a London-set drama titled Living, which was released in 2022.
Ishiguro wrote the script, which has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Oscars, which take place on Sunday (12 March).
The film follows a bureaucrat who is diagosed with terminal cancer, and is spurred on to finally embrace life after dedicating his life to his work.
For Living to succeed, he required an actor who was up to the task of playing the lead role – and he found that person in Bill Nighy.
He revealed that, one night, while in a taxi with Nighy, he had a brainwave – what if the Love, Actually star should play the role?

Mere months after “Pinocchio”s debut, Guillermo del Toro is already at work on his next animated film: an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant.”
Under his Netflix deal, del Toro will direct, produce and co-write the screenplay with “Matilda” scribe Dennis Kelly. ShadowMachine’s stop-motion studio, which also worked on “Pinocchio,” will be the production’s home base.
Ishiguro’s 2015 novel revolves around an aging British couple, Axl and Beatrice, who live in a fictional post-Arthurian England where nobody is able to retain long-term memories.
“’The Buried Giant’ continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds,” del Toro said in a statement. “It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”

Right before his “Pinocchio” stop-motion film (probably) wins the Animated Feature Oscar this March, Guillermo Del Toro is setting up a new animated flick at Netflix. The “Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” filmmaker will direct “The Buried Giant,” an animated adaptation of “Never Let Me Go” writer Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel, for the streamer, IndieWire has confirmed.
Released in 2015, Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant” is set in a version of England where King Arthur really existed but has long since died, and nobody is able to retain long-term memories. The story focuses on the relationship between Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple who go on a journey to find a son they can barely remember.
