Sandfall Interactive just can’t stop winning, huh? Within a week of releasing their reactive RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has gained a lot of attention. It’s possible Sandfall Interactive was sure about being a hit, as a live adaptation of the game was greenlit before release.
As of 2025, stories from games are getting highlighted in mainstream media. Recent ones being Devil May Cry and The Last of Us Part 2. While both these stories are well known and have gained a massive audience over the years, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 only took a week.
While it has been confirmed that a live adaptation is in the works, fans are going crazy over who should be cast to showcase the masterpiece. It’s for sure nobody wants a Last of Us situation repeated.

Martial arts decide the fate, and the faith, of humanity in the first trailer for next month’s indie action thriller, Absolute Dominion. Combining action classics like Bloodsport, The Hunger Games, and Mortal Kombat, Absolute Dominion drops audiences in a dystopian future in which the world’s governments decide to end the ongoing holy wars that have devastated civilization by gambling everything on a martial arts tournament. Which, considering the state of the real world, is some political policy we could get seriously behind.
Directed by Lexi Alexander, who is best known for helming the likes of the Marvel movie Punisher: War Zone starring the late Ray Stevenson on the big screen, as well as Arrow, Limitless, Taken, and S.W.A.T. on the small screen, Absolute Dominion is all set to land on Digital and in select theaters on May 9, 2025. Some of us, this writer included, remember growing up with VHS copies of our favourite films, and the game-changing uptick in quality that came with the advent of DVD. However, that did not prepare us for the HD revolution, and the subsequent clarity of fidelity that came with 4K Blu-ray. Being able to accurately represent the cinema experience at home is something truly special.
Now, the movies we love have never looked better, and a decent 4K setup will allow you to revel in the vivid colours and crisp detail you previously only got on the big screen. In re-watching some of my favourites in this format, I’ve noticed so much more, and become more engaged as the images on screen were brought to life. There are no streaming bitrate dips, 720p caps or internet drop outs – it’s a heady, genuinely exciting experience every time.

Marvel, and specifically the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has dominated the zeitgeist for nearly two decades at this point. There's always plenty of talk as to whether general audiences are getting tired of Marvel movies, and while the MCU may not be as infallible as it once was, there's still ample interest. 2024's "Deadpool & Wolverine" crossed the $1 billion mark, and "Daredevil: Born Again" has been largely viewed within a positive light. Sure, every so often you get a "Captain America: Brave New World" that underperforms, but superhero movies will always have a place within the cultural landscape.
Some might argue that there are already too many Marvel movies, but they're could've been plenty more. For every Marvel project that winds up in theaters, there are numerous others where a script was written or even went into pre-production but got cancelled for one reason or another. While there have been several iterations of the iconic Planet of the Apes, nothing has the pop cultural significance of the 1968 original. The sci-fi film did not just conform to the tropes of the genre, but also included political commentary, elements of horror, and an insane twist that still hits hard despite being one of the most recognized images in human history.
The iconic half-buried Statue of Liberty is a huge revelation in the movie and one hell of a way to end it. It reveals something that everyone obviously feared but never dared to think of, as it is too tragic and dark a scenario to think of. So, what exactly does the symbol of the Statue of Liberty mean?

What is the role that first comes to mind when you think of Tim Roth? Is it the clumsy bellboy from Four Rooms? The wailing criminal who gets shot in Reservoir Dogs? Or is it the psychology wiz in Lie to Me? The excellent British actor has played a litany of noteworthy characters, but top among them is not likely to be his role in Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes. Regardless, his performance as General Thade gave him the opportunity to appear on-screen with Charlton Heston, a truly bittersweet experience considering it featured the controversial actor in one of his last roles.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Roth was at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival this week, where he offered a masterclass and also presented his latest feature film, Poison, a romantic drama he co-stars with Trine Dyrholm. The actor, who rose to...

First launched in May 2020, HBO Max has emerged as one of the world's most-viewed streaming services, with nearly 100 million subscribers by the end of spring 2023. The service offers a unique collection of modern movies and television series and an expansive catalog of classic and international films. Fans can watch anything from contemporary hits like Dune: Part Two to milestone classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
However, HBO Max has been rebranded as Max due to the WarnerMedia merger with Discovery, Inc.. With a repertoire of over 2,000 movies, choice paralysis can lead to ample wasted time. Luckily, the streaming series always has a huge collection of outstanding movies to suit any mood or preference.

The excellent work on “Dune: Part Two” claimed the VFX Oscar on Sunday, while also leaving a lingering question of why the movies in the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise have also been consistently outstanding but are still overlooked come final voting for the category’s Academy Award.
Since Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened last spring, it was widely considered an Oscar frontrunner among VFX practitioners, and its nomination was pretty much viewed as a no brainer. Then last month, the film, with work led by VFX supervisor Erik Winquist and Weta FX, won the top Visual Effects Society Award for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature, besting titles including the Dune sequel (which did win three trophies that evening).

Following recent reports claiming that both Mark Strong and Mark Rylance could be in contention to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter series, we're now hearing that John Lithgow is officially in talks for the role.
Lithgow has appeared in a multitude of film and TV projects over the years, including Dexter, Footloose, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Interstellar. More recently, he played key roles in Conclave and FX's prematurely cancelled The Old Man.
Jeff Sneider believes Rylance was offered the part, but declined after his wife passed away.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the top feature prize at the 23rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards and the one that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The celebration of achievement in visual effects took place on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The sci-fi primate sequel beat “Dune: Part Two,” which went into the evening with the most nominations (seven) and emerged with the most wins (four): Outstanding Achievement in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding CG Cinematography, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature.
The victory for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” does not necessarily make the film a frontrunner in the Oscars’ visual-effects race. Over the 22 years of Ves Awards, the winner went on to receive the Oscar 12 times, but the two groups have only matched three times in the last 10 years.

Spectacle has been essential to keeping moviegoing alive and pushing filmmaking forward, and the impact of VFX on the industry cannot be overstated. As major studios look for more avenues to entice audiences into theaters in this rapidly shifting world of technology, in which almost every form of entertainment is at our fingertips, the promise of breathtaking set pieces on the big screen remains one of the biggest selling points for audiences. Ideally, the best achievement in visual effects Oscar sets a bar in terms of what can be attained through technology, creativity, budget and audience investment.
As a result, the category differs from the others in that it suggests a measurable goal for productions to reach. If a blockbuster with dinosaurs can’t look at least as good as the industry-shifting visual effects on display in Jurassic Park (1993), then there’s still work to be done. Andy Serkis has set his sights on another tale of rebellion. The Planet of the Apes star is trading in primates for pigs in his upcoming animated adaptation of George Orwell's 1945 satirical allegory Animal Farm. As the director and possible star of the upcoming Animal Farm adaptation, Serkis has cleared the air about his mysterious and long-awaited animated directorial debut.
Speaking with Collider, screenwriter Nicholas Stoller said Serkis' Animal Farm will be a "darkly comic" yet family-friendly animated tale that puts a modern spin on the classic political satire.
After decades of Serkis trying to get his vision for Animal Farm produced, the film is finally becoming a reality. Having recently released his new romantic comedy film You're Cordially Invited on Prime Video, Stoller talked to Collider about the next project he's been working on. Jurassic World Rebirth is the next chapter in the sprawling dinosaur franchise, and I’m calling it now: It will battle with Jurassic World: Dominion for the title of which movie did more harm to the universe.
We’re living in strange times, where it is hard to get the green light for original concepts because executives only want to vote with their wallets when a big brand name is attached.
It’s understandable, especially regarding a CGI-heavy movie franchise, because those same media honchos stand to lose much more money.
(Universal Pictures/Screenshot)
Scarlett Johanson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend are A-list actors. However, getting them to sign on for Jurassic World Rebirth was probably easy because of the brand name alone.
At least, that’s what I’m telling myself after watching the official trailer. It looks more like Deep Blue Sea than Jurassic Park, which isn’t a good look.

Surface season 2: AppleTV+ unveils a trailer for Gugu Mbatha-Raw thriller ahead of February premiere

Our own reviewer Alex Maidy wasn’t very impressed by the Apple TV+ thriller series Surface – you can read his 5/10 review at This Link – but Apple TV+ went ahead and ordered a second season of the show, with Surface season 2 heading for a premiere date of Friday, February 21st. The new season will consist of eight episodes, released on a weekly basis through April 11th. Now that the premiere date is just a couple of weeks away, Apple TV+ has unveiled a trailer for the new season, and you can check that out in the embed above.
Surface season 2 will see Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is also an executive producer on the series, reprising the role of Sophie, a woman who has extreme memory loss after a traumatic head injury. As movies like Captain America: The First Avenger, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and The Godfather Part II have proved, audiences love a good origin story. There’s just something about learning the background of a character (or characters) that you’ve fallen in love with and getting to know them inside and out, finding out what drives them or — in the case of today’s news — what caused their severe trauma. Taking to his X account, Terrifier franchise director, Damien Leone, revealed that the upcoming fourth feature will pull the curtain back on Art the Clown’s (David Howard Thornton) horrific origin story. The news comes following a day of celebration for the filmmaker, who recently rang in another year on this spinning trash rock that we call Earth. Grateful for the love he felt from the fandom, Leone returned the kindness, writing,...

Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now Deadpool & Wolverine. These are some of the fantastic Marvel Cinematic Universe productions with exquisite visual effects, that have not been nominated for Best Visual Effects Oscars in their respective years.
Even before the Academy Awards ceremony occurs on March 2, any hopes that the MCU could snatch up its first Oscar in this category were crushed when Deadpool & Wolverine failed to receive a Visual Effects nod. The nominations went to Alien: Romulus, Better Man, Dune 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Wicked. Although Marvel Studios works with the best technical artists in the business, there is always top-notch competition every year, making their winless streak slightly justifiable. But this year does not particularly have one of the stronger lists of candidates.

In the "Harry Potter" movies, the binary of "good" and "evil" is illustrated pretty well by Harry himself — played by Daniel Radcliffe — and his lifelong enemy Lord Voldemort. Still, Harry has plenty of minor villains to deal with along the way, and one is his schoolboy nemesis Draco Malfoy, portrayed throughout the franchise's eight movies by Tom Felton. So would Felton and Radcliffe work together again? According to Felton, they've chatted about it a bit, but there would be a bit of a twist if the two ever teamed up for a different project.
In an interview with Digital Spy in May of 2022, Felton was asked about any possible reunions with any of his "Harry Potter" co-stars, and he said he'd leap at the chance to work alongside Radcliffe in particular. After Hollywood had seemingly had James Franco cast out due to disturbing allegations against him, many fans wondered what happened to the prolific actor. Franco, once a prominent figure in Hollywood, has graced the screen with a variety of dynamic performances, from the Spider-Man trilogy to the critically acclaimed 127 Hours, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His career was marked by a blend of commercial and indie films, showcasing his versatility across genres. His collaborations with Seth Rogen, such as in Pineapple Express and Disaster Artist, further cemented his place in the industry.
Franco's talent was undeniable, and his knack for choosing diverse and challenging roles made him a significant player in the film industry. The mythology of the Planet of the Apes franchise is built on time travel, but it seems unlikely that the more grounded modern-day reboot series will ever utilize that plot point. Although it’s a lot weirder than blockbuster sci-fi properties like Transformers and The Avengers, Planet of the Apes has endured as a popular franchise for over half a century. The series keeps evolving to keep up with the times. The original series captured the zany zeitgeist of the New Hollywood ‘70s, while the grittier reboot movies of the 2010s and 2020s are more in line with modern big-budget fare.
With its most recent entry, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the franchise has reconciled the grittiness of the modern reboots with the more traditional premise of the original series. It seems that the producers are aiming to get back to the storytelling style of the early Planet of the Apes movies.

The Planet of the Apes franchise has certainly grown in size and scope since the release of the 1968 original. After the success of the film, the studio wanted to capitalize on its new favorite I.P. by making sequels and even a television series that would expand the lore and storytelling possibilities. Somewhere along the way, things got a little esoteric, to say the least. While the initial couple of sequels, Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Escape from the Planet of the Apes, are actually solid outings in the overall franchise, the story gets muddled by overly ambitious plot ideas that cap the original series at five films. Then came the TV series in 1974 that only lasted a season.

Among the most celebrated franchises in all of cinema, the Planet of the Apes series has delighted audiences with a variety of movies detailing excellent sci-fi narratives and fun action. Harnessing a primal connection between man and animal, each film expands on complex themes that make viewers reflect on the story, while simultaneously providing entertaining characters that enhance each outing. Tom Felton commented on the real-life nicknames that he utilized to make his performance as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films exceptional and convincing. Along with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, Felton skyrocketed to fame at a young age after the breakout success of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. He would go on to become a core part of the Harry Potter franchise's cast and would play one of the most integral characters in the entire series, the conflicted and disturbed Draco Malfoy.
Following the enormous success of the Harry Potter films, which spanned eight installments with the final one being 2011's Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Felton went on to star in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Murder in the First, and The Flash. By 2011, the Planet of the Apes series had already been around for over 40 years, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes completely revolutionized the franchise. The first Planet of the Apes movie was released in 1968 and mesmerized audiences all over the world. The ending of Planet of the Apes is still regarded as one of the best twists in movie history. After the success of the 1968 original, four more Planet of the Apes movies were made before the franchise was eventually rebooted in 2001.
The 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot was not received well by critics or audiences, and led to the franchise being deemed as dead once again for 10 years. Therefore, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a lot of factors working against it. However, Rise's emotional story about Caesar quickly won over both critics and audiences, and has led to several more successful Planet of the Apes movies.

In 2024, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes introduced an entirely new era to the long-running sci-fi franchise, and in the same vein, there is one Planet of the Apes trend that the next movies should not repeat. After three movies dedicated to the rise of Caesar and his ape society, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes jumps forward several generations to center on Noa, a young ape whose world comes to a standstill when a rival ape population overtakes his village. This new era of apes is different, but has the potential to be truly great.
When it comes to a franchise as long-standing as Planet of the Apes, there are many questions about how the series should change over time, or opposedly, how it should stay the same. Clearly, audiences are infatuated with these walking, talking apes, so that is one element of Planet of the Apes that should never change.

Director Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” takes place 300 years after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the previous “Planet of Apes” trilogy, when humanity lost the wars and Apes ruled the world for generations. With the fourth installment, Ball wanted to push visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and the Wētā FX performance capture team well past their prior achievements.
The Caesar trilogy featured a mix of human and ape characters, with many apes using sign language to communicate. In “Kingdom,” humans take a back seat with 12 new ape leads that walk-and-talk like Aaron Sorkin characters. Ball also envisioned it as a road film with Noa (Owen Teague) crossing an ever-changing landscape to find his abducted clan.
Dating back to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), the franchise always pushed performance capture beyond the soundstage but production still centered around carefully prepped principal exterior sets.

Computer generated imagery often gets a bad rap, but the truth is, many movie franchises have been dramatically improved by modern digital special effects. From the Star Wars movies to the films of the MCU, most modern blockbuster franchises rely quite heavily on CGI, with fantasy or sci-fi worlds drawing audiences the most easily of any cinematic promise. Sometimes previous films are improved significantly by the addition of modern special effects.
Granted, some movie franchises are aged by early CGI. But as the medium has improved and innovated over time, it's hard to deny that some of the best movie reboot franchises have flatly improved their source material with updated graphics. Whether it's gargantuan fantasy creatures, impressive science fiction machines, entire fictional landscapes or even simple animals, good CGI can make a world of difference in the arena of remakes, reboots, and prequels.

Three years ago, with some fanfare, Saudi Arabia’s first tentpole movie was announced, an action epic titled “Desert Warrior” shot in a scenic area around the site of the futuristic city of Neom with a hefty $150 million budget.
Helmed by British director director Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) and featuring a top notch international cast led by “Captain America” star Anthony Mackie, Ben Kingsley, and Aiysha Hart, “Desert Warrior” – which is set in at a pre-Islamic 7th century Arabia when Saudi was made up of rival, feuding tribes forever at each other’s throats – has since been caught in a seemingly endless tempest of reshoots, recuts, and infighting.
But now “Desert Warrior,” which is produced by Saudi-owned powerhouse Mbc Studios with U.S. producer Jeremy Bolt (“Resident Evil”) and Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, seems to have finally found some peace. The symbolic epic touted...

Nowadays, it is not at all uncommon for iconic movie franchises to be revived. Studios know that one of the most effective ways to succeed at the box office is by creating new films that already have massive fan bases, as this can essentially guarantee that the film will attract a large audience. Unfortunately, many of these franchise revivals prove to be rather unsuccessful when it comes to their actual quality. A crucial danger of reviving old franchises is focusing too heavily on simply showing fans what they want to see, instead of actually providing a well-constructed story.
Thankfully, not every big-screen revival falls victim to this issue. Over the years, a handful of films have managed to find the proper balance between celebrating what audiences love about the original franchise, while also adding elements that help make the new addition a worthwhile inclusion. In doing this, the filmmakers have...

Andy Serkis looks back on his transition from playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings movies to playing the titular character in Peter Jackson's King Kong. Serkis' revolutionary work with motion capture technology in his Gollum performance had a far-reaching impact. It led to Serkis playing King Kong, Caesar in the Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy, and Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, all of which were achieved via motion capture. Serkis has also expanded into directing, including being tapped as the director for the upcoming Hunt for Gollum movie.

Tim Burton's career, which included quite a few remakes, has reached many wonderfully inventive high points and a few low points. From ghosts and superheroes to talking animals and magic beings, Tim Burton has one of the most distinct styles in Hollywood. The fact that some stars are often described as "Tim Burton actors" due to how many times they have worked with him is just one of many examples of how Burton became a genre of his own.
However, for every great original film he's directed over the years, from Beetlejuice to Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands, he's also been in the directing chair for a series of remakes that differ in quality. Taking on a film that already has an expectant fan base is never an easy task, but when done correctly, it can be a wonderful re-imagining of a beloved existing IP. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, released in 1972, marked a darker, grittier turn for the Planet of the Apes franchise. Serving as the fourth installment in the original series, and following the lighter yet poignant Escape from the Planet of the Apes, the film imagines a dystopian future where enslaved apes rise up against human oppression. This storyline holds significant thematic weight, exploring themes of societal control, rebellion, and liberation in a way that is provocative. However, while Conquest boasts an ambitious narrative and a fantastic premise, it is held back by budget constraints and clumsy execution.
These limitations often prevented the film from reaching the level of depth and nuance that its storyline deserved. Despite its flaws, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes contributed to the franchises legacy, laying down a foundation of rebellion and conflict that has resonated through the Planet of the Apes's subsequent adaptations and reboots.

Planet of the Apes fans make connections to the franchise in reaction to the news about more than 40 monkeys escaping a facility. On Wednesday, November 6, 43 monkeys that were used to develop vaccines escaped from a lab in Yemassee, South Carolina, and are still on the loose. Rise of the Planet of the Apes sees apes used for drug development break out of their facility. The film ends with a deadly global pandemic.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was one of the most ambitious entries in the series, but it also laid foundations for where the movies can go next. The original Planet of the Apes movie released in 1968 broke new ground for sci-fi as it introduced a primitive world run by apes, but the big reveal at the end of the first movie reframed the entire meaning behind the movies. As the series went on, it built on this incredible narrative, so rebooting the franchise in 2011 was always going to be a struggle.
In fact, when legendary movie director, Tim Burton tried to reboot the series just a decade earlier in 2001, the movie drew considerable comparison to the original and, despite a solid box office, the vision for a new franchise died before it could begin. But 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes created a reboot with a new direction.
