Some of us, this writer included, remember growing up with VHS copies of our favourite films, and the game-changing uptick in quality that came with the advent of DVD. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the top feature prize at the 23rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards and the one that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The celebration of achievement in visual effects took place on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The sci-fi primate sequel beat “Dune: Part Two,” which went into the evening with the most nominations (seven) and emerged with the most wins (four): Outstanding Achievement in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding CG Cinematography, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the next chapter in the sprawling dinosaur franchise, and I’m calling it now: It will battle with Jurassic World: Dominion for the title of which movie did more harm to the universe.

Scarlett Johanson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend are A-list actors. However, getting them to sign on for Jurassic World Rebirth was probably easy because of the brand name alone.

At least, that’s what I’m telling myself after watching the official trailer. It looks more like Deep Blue Sea than Jurassic Park, which isn’t a good look.

These are some of the fantastic Marvel Cinematic Universe productions with exquisite visual effects, that have not been nominated for Best Visual Effects Oscars in their respective years.

Even before the Academy Awards ceremony occurs on March 2, any hopes that the MCU could snatch up its first Oscar in this category were crushed when Deadpool & Wolverine failed to receive a Visual Effects nod. The nominations went to Alien: Romulus, Better Man, Dune 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Wicked. Although Marvel Studios works with the best technical artists in the business, there is always top-notch competition every year, making their winless streak slightly justifiable. But this year does not particularly have one of the stronger lists of candidates.

The mythology of the Planet of the Apes franchise is built on time travel, but it seems unlikely that the more grounded modern-day reboot series will ever utilize that plot point. Although it’s a lot weirder than blockbuster sci-fi properties like Transformers and The Avengers, Planet of the Apes has endured as a popular franchise for over half a century. The series keeps evolving to keep up with the times. The original series captured the zany zeitgeist of the New Hollywood ‘70s, while the grittier reboot movies of the 2010s and 2020s are more in line with modern big-budget fare.

With its most recent entry, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the franchise has reconciled the grittiness of the modern reboots with the more traditional premise of the original series. It seems that the producers are aiming to get back to the storytelling style of the early Planet of the Apes movies.

In 2024, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes introduced an entirely new era to the long-running sci-fi franchise, and in the same vein, there is one Planet of the Apes trend that the next movies should not repeat. After three movies dedicated to the rise of Caesar and his ape society, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes jumps forward several generations to center on Noa, a young ape whose world comes to a standstill when a rival ape population overtakes his village. This new era of apes is different, but has the potential to be truly great.

When it comes to a franchise as long-standing as Planet of the Apes, there are many questions about how the series should change over time, or opposedly, how it should stay the same. Clearly, audiences are infatuated with these walking, talking apes, so that is one element of Planet of the Apes that should never change.

Director Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” takes place 300 years after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the previous “Planet of Apes” trilogy, when humanity lost the wars and Apes ruled the world for generations. With the fourth installment, Ball wanted to push visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and the Wētā FX performance capture team well past their prior achievements.

The Caesar trilogy featured a mix of human and ape characters, with many apes using sign language to communicate. In “Kingdom,” humans take a back seat with 12 new ape leads that walk-and-talk like Aaron Sorkin characters. Ball also envisioned it as a road film with Noa (Owen Teague) crossing an ever-changing landscape to find his abducted clan.

Dating back to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), the franchise always pushed performance capture beyond the soundstage but production still centered around carefully prepped principal exterior sets.

Computer generated imagery often gets a bad rap, but the truth is, many movie franchises have been dramatically improved by modern digital special effects. From the Star Wars movies to the films of the MCU, most modern blockbuster franchises rely quite heavily on CGI, with fantasy or sci-fi worlds drawing audiences the most easily of any cinematic promise. Sometimes previous films are improved significantly by the addition of modern special effects.

Granted, some movie franchises are aged by early CGI. But as the medium has improved and innovated over time, it's hard to deny that some of the best movie reboot franchises have flatly improved their source material with updated graphics. Whether it's gargantuan fantasy creatures, impressive science fiction machines, entire fictional landscapes or even simple animals, good CGI can make a world of difference in the arena of remakes, reboots, and prequels.

Studios know that one of the most effective ways to succeed at the box office is by creating new films that already have massive fan bases, as this can essentially guarantee that the film will attract a large audience.
