In Paul King's "Paddington 2," High Grant played an egocentric actor named Phoenix Buchanan, a greedy villain given to flights of narcissism. Given what Jon Stewart has said about Grant, it might not have been a stretch for him to play such a character. Grant had a bad reputation and has taken to task by the press several times in the past for losing his temper on set. Most recently, Grant was reported to have yelled very harshly at a woman on the set of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." He assumed that the woman was a visiting executive and he was infuriated by her demands. As it turns out, the woman was an on-set chaperone for one of the film's child actors, and certainly didn't deserve a dressing down.
Grant was conciliatory afterward, however. He admitted immediately to "groveling," asking for forgiveness.
Back in 2012, however, Grant already recognized this about himself.

Hugh Grant is crediting the Wachowskis with reviving his career.
The Golden Globe winner reflected on playing six roles in the sibling filmmakers’ 2012 feature adaptation of Cloud Atlas after his 2009 comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans? with Sarah Jessica Parker failed to perform.
“I was completely marooned,” Grant recalled to Vanity Fair. “The Wachowskis offered me just a few small little parts in Cloud Atlas, and to be honest, I was probably only offered that because some of their international distributors had said, ‘We need some more recognizable names. Cram someone recognizable in here.’ They would’ve thought, ‘Oh, we don’t really want Hugh Grant, but we’ll give him some tiny parts.’ They will deny that but I think it’s partly what happened.”

New year, new month, new titles to watch at Prime Video! The streamer has kicked off January 2024 in fashion with plenty of classic titles that were released on the first of the month, including 2007’s “No Country for Old Men” and Quentin Tarantino’s hit “Pulp Fiction,” but the best is still yet to come this month, including Lula Wang’s highly anticipated miniseries “Expats,” the A24-produced adult animated musical comedy series “Hazbin Hotel,” and much more.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Wilford Brimley, best known for his roles in “The Natural,” the 1982 remake of “The Thing,” “The Firm” and “Cocoon,” died on Saturday. He was 85.
His agent, Lynda Bensky, told The New York Times that he had been sick with a kidney problem for two months.
Brimley was also famous for the series of commercials for Quaker Oats in which he appeared.
Pauline Kael ably summed up his appeal in a few words. Reviewing “Cocoon” for the New Yorker in 1985, she said, “Wilford Brimley, with his walrus mustache and friendly belly, brings an ornery impudence to his role.”
Brimley, who seemed to enter old age several decades ago, appeared perfectly at home in the Ron Howard-directed movie about senior citizens unintentionally rejuvenated by an alien life force in the pool where they do water aerobics even though he was only 51 at the time. Wilford Brimley, the beloved character actor who starred in such film as “Cocoon” and “The Natural,” died Saturday at age 85.
He had been sick for two months with a kidney ailment, his agent told the New York Times.
The Utah native found his breakthrough role as a recurring character in the 1970s period drama “The Waltons.” Soon, he played a range of often crotchety characters on the big screen, including a nuclear power plant engineer in 1979’s “The China Syndrome,” a tenacious district attorney in 1981’s “Absence of Malice,” a country music manager in 1983’s “Tender Mercies” and the manager of a perpetually losing baseball team in 1984’s “The Natural.”

It’s been two years since Hugh Grant was last seen on the big screen, as the actor has, most notably, been leading the crusade against News of the World and their phone tapping scandal. Grant, who last appeared in 2009′s Did You Hear About the Morgans? and is slated to voice a character for the upcoming The Pirates! Band of Misfits, will also appear in the all-star adaptation of David Mitchell’s 2004 novel Cloud Atlas.
Warner Bros. confirmed Grant will join the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess, and Ben Whishaw for the film.

Warner Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes” couldn’t crack the case of the crowded Christmas boxoffice, outfoxed by Fox-distributed “Avatar” in its second weekend and the scifi actioner’s remarkable marketplace hold.
James Cameron’s motion capture-and-live action epic used positive word of mouth and premium ticket charges in 3D venues to concoct a nearly imperceptible 2% decline from week-earlier grosses, topping domestic rankings with an estimated $75 million for a 10-day cume of $212.3 million.
“Sherlock” started strongly Friday with an opening-day record of $24.8 million in Christmas green stuff, but the Robert Downey Jr. starrer lost a bit of its boxoffice shine on each of the subsequent two days for a still-impressive $65.4 million bow.
Fox’s animated feature “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel” debuted in third with $50.2 million and a $77.1 cume since unspooling Wednesday. Universal’s romantic comedy “It’s Complicated” – starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin – debuted in fourth with a stronger-than-expected $22.1 million.

The advent of Avatar obtained an estimated $73 million on approximately 7,000 screens at 3,452 sites over the weekend, claiming the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie that's neither a sequel, a remake nor a direct adaptation (though others had greater attendance). It was also the second highest-grossing December opening weekend after I Am Legend ($77.2 million). Overall weekend business surged 50 percent over the same weekend last year, but was down considerably from the comparable period in 2007, when I Am Legend and Alvin and the Chipmunks debuted.
With its advanced 3D presentation as a key selling point, Avatar handily set a new 3D opening weekend benchmark. Showing on 3,129 3D screens at 2,038 sites, the format accounted for an estimated $52 million of the gross. The previous highs were Up's $35.4 million and Monsters Vs. Aliens' $32.6 million. Update: 'Avatar' weekend earnings climb
Mother Nature worked her own special effects on "Avatar" during the weekend as a big East Coast snowstorm kept James Cameron's sci-fi actioner from piling its opening boxoffice as high as expected.
But Fox still managed to shovel a blizzard's worth of business with the 3D release, which topped domestic rankings with an estimated $73 million through Sunday. The motion capture-and-live action hybrid bowed simultaneously in 106 international territories, where it rung up $159.2 million in foreign coin for a worldwide debut totaling $232.2 million.
The weekend's sole other wide opener -- Sony's romantic comedy "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker -- fetched $7 million in fourth place. Disney's animated feature "The Princess and the Frog" fell 50% from its week-earlier wide debut to $12.2 million in second place with a $44.8 cume, while Warner Bros.' This is the weekend we've all been waiting for. Avatar finally hits theaters and the results are sure to be spectacular. Tracking indicates the James Cameron extravaganza is playing like a sequel, rather than as a brand new piece of filmmaking based on nothing other than what rolls around inside Cameron's brain. With early reviews overwhelmingly positive, the film's audience is likely to be much broader than initially expected. Going up against this massive endeavor is Sony Pictures' Did You Hear About the Morgans starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. The cynical "counter-programming" option for women doesn't seem to be working,...

Parker Tidied Up Grant's Nails On Set
Sarah Jessica Parker turned manicurist on the set of her new film Did You Hear About The Morgans? when she noticed onscreen husband Hugh Grant's "raggedy" nails.
The Sex & The City star got her clippers and files out and decided to clean him up.
She explains, "I did Hugh's nails every Tuesday. He's beautiful and chic and groomed, but he has a raggedy hand, nails that look like he clipped them with his teeth."
And she didn't stop with his hands - she also tidied up her co-star's toenails.
Parker adds, "I think if you're gonna be in a movie that America deserves a clean foot."

Grant Stunned By Co-star's Diva Demands
Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker were so shocked with the diva antics of a co-star on the set of their new comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? they insisted on getting the same treatment.
The onscreen couple were flabbergasted by Bart the bear's demands - and Grant jokes they felt like lesser stars as they stood by and watched the grizzly get constantly pampered by his handlers.
The British actor explains, "He wouldn't come out of his trailer until he had 12 cans of iced tea and had been hosed down from head to foot. And then the crew had to applaud and say, 'Yay, Bart, you're so great.'
"Sarah Jessica and I got jealous, so the crew had to do that for us as well."
And Grant tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "If the bear was doing particularly well, its trainer would wrestle him on the floor in this crazy, wrestle-y cuddle. So I made (director) Marc (Lawrence) do that to me if I ever did a scene well."...
