Like Star Trek’s Jonathan Frakes, A Voyager Legend Moved Behind the Camera to Direct the Most Legendary ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ Episode
Image
It is not a new thing for members of the Star Trek cast to step behind the camera and take on directing duties for some episodes. Who better than the only ones to feature in every episode to take over the reins sometimes? Actors like Jonathan Frakes and LeVar Burton have directed the most number of Star Trek episodes even after their shows ended.

However, one actress who transitioned into directing and has made it her bread and butter (much like Frakes) is Voyager’s Roxann Dawson. Dawson played B’Elanna Torres in the spinoff show and directed two episodes of the series later. She has since been the guiding force for some of the best network shows of the past few decades.

‘Homicide: Life on the Streets’ Launched David Simon’s Career and Changed TV History. Next Month, You Can Finally Stream It
Image
Before David Simon debuted his groundbreaking socio-political tapestry “The Wire” to audiences and helped garner the prestige HBO now only reserves for “Game of Thrones” and superhero spinoffs, he wrote the book on the world of crime and law enforcement in Baltimore. Published in 1991, his non-fiction book “Homicide: A Year of Killing Streets” pools two years of research from Simon’s time spent observing the Baltimore Police Department, which itself followed four years spent on the police beat for The Baltimore Sun newspaper.

Wishing to adapt the book into a feature film, Simon got a copy to filmmaker and Baltimore native Barry Levinson, who felt the material was better suited to a TV series. Levinson shared with Paul Attansio, a former Washington Post film critic whose would go on to write the Oscar-nominated “Quiz Show,” as well as “Donnie Brasco,” and together the team brought the project to NBC, where...

James Gunn’s Superman: The New Logo & Everything We Know
Image
Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

Who’s In It?

It’s always interesting to see who will get the chance to put on the suit. Will they go more for the look of Superman, or will they find an actor who can convey the wholesomeness of the character? Sometimes, they get both. The characters surrounding...

The Pebble in the Shoe: An Interview with Agnieszka Holland
Image
Green Border.Agnieszka Holland begs to differ with Claude Lanzmann. The director of Shoah (1985) had attacked the idea of depicting the Holocaust in a fiction film, claiming that its unfathomable horrors would inevitably be trivialized. In a 2013 National Gallery of Art lecture, “Viewing History through the Filmmaker’s Lens,” Holland made two counter-arguments: that feature films are a tool to educate as many people as possible about the Holocaust, and that “taking on issues that are impossible to explain or grasp rationally is one of the most important challenges of an artist.” Holland had made a number of provocative Holocaust dramas, including Angry Harvest (1985), Europa Europa (1990), and In Darkness (2011), all of which involve the plight of Jews who have improbably escaped capture and death. With these films, Holland looked back at events from decades in the past. In her latest film, she is dramatizing history while it is unfolding.Urgent without sacrificing artistry,...

Image
Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland is one of the greats. A three-time Academy Award nominee—1990’s “Europa Europa,” 1993’s “Angry Harvest” and the Holocaust drama “In Darkness”— Holland is also known for her celebrated prestige TV work, particularly on the David Simon series’ “The Wire,” and “Treme” and shows like “The Killing,” and “House Of Cards.” But her best-known feature work has always leaned towards social justice and socially-conscious dramas, which brings us to her latest, “Green Border,” an bracing portrait of Europe’s refugee crisis that has been hailed as a “humanitarian masterpiece.”

‘Fargo’ and ‘True Detective’ are on track for the Emmy face-off we were denied 10 years ago
Image
Three of the predicted five Best Limited Series Emmy nominees — “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Shōgun” and “Masters of the Air” — are new shows, while the other two are, well, not. “Fargo,” in first place in the odds,” and “True Detective: Night Country,” in third, are competing with their respective fifth and fourth seasons. Both Emmy-winning shows, the anthology series debuted within months of each other in 2014, and if they both make the cut, it’ll be the very first time they’ll go head to head in a series race, 10 years late.

A decade ago, the shows could’ve — and should’ve — collided at the Emmys. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, “True Detective” debuted that January on HBO to great acclaim and became a ratings smash. In April, a month after “True Detective” concluded, Noah Hawley‘s “Fargo,” starring Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Alison Tolman and Colin Hanks, arrived...

Sue Naegle, Ali Krug Set Up Shop at Universal Content Productions
Image
Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are re-teaming for a new venture.

The former Annapurna duo and longtime collaborators have launched Dinner Party Productions and signed a multiple-year overall deal with Universal Content Productions.

Naegle, the former content chief at Megan Ellison’s company, and Krug, who was co-head of TV alongside her at Annapurna, will develop and produce new projects for UCP for both NBCUniversal-owned platforms as well as third-party buyers.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Naegle and Krug — who have worked together for 13 years — said the appeal of being able to sell to outside buyers was part of why they wanted to sign with the Beatrice Springborn-led division that is housed within Pearlena Igbokwe’s Universal Studio Group. (Read the Q&a, below.)

As part of the pact, Naegle and Krug have boarded Peacock’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s New York Times best-seller The Five-Star Weekend.

Image
Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are in business with Universal Studio Group’s UCP.

The Emmy-winning pair has signed an overall deal with the Universal division through which their newly established Dinner Party Productions will develop and produce series.

This marks the first time former UTA, HBO Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures boss Naegle has worked directly with Universal. She exited her Chief Content Officer role at Annapurna in 2022. As we reported at the time, Krug had initially taken over her TV division responsibilities, but has since reunited with her former boss and long-time production partner to launch Dinner Party.

In development is a series adaptation of Elon Hilderbrand’s novel ‘The Five-Star Weekend’ for Universal’s sister streamer Peacock, with Bekah Brunstetter penning the script. Best Blue Characters in Movies
Image
It’s hard to explain exactly what inspired this list. Maybe we just wanted to rave some more about Pixar. Maybe watching Avatar again and the new sequel Avatar: The Way of Water boggled our minds. Whatever it was, it’s done, and we can’t take it back (the delete key is broken). It is kind of strange that there are so many blue movie characters. If we wanted to do, say, Best Red Characters in Movies, it would just be five pictures of Hellboy and five pictures of Darth Maul. Travel below to see our picks for the very best blue characters in movie history!

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live - Release Date, Cast, Plot And More Info
Image
"The Walking Dead" is the cable franchise that just won't die. The saga that began in 2010 (or 2003 if you count the comic books that spawned it) has so far led to not one or two but six different spin-offs set within the same universe, a number that would be jaw-dropping even if AMC wasn't one of many media companies signing off on large-scale layoffs in recent years. At any rate, the latest spin-off is by far the most narratively promising, as it's set to answer burning questions fans (even those who quit watching ages ago) have about the show's most-loved couple.

That's right, folks: "The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live" is finally going to tell us whether or not Richonne is endgame. The couple comprised of original series protagonist Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his super capable second-in-command turned bestie turned lover Michonne (Danai Gurira) got separated way back...

‘The Family Plan’ Director Simon Cellan Jones Talks Making Back-to-Back Mark Wahlberg Movies
Image
After a decorated career in television, The Family Plan director Simon Cellan Jones has returned to feature films for the first time in two-plus decades.

Cellan Jones’ feature career began with 2000’s Some Voices, a British drama starring a still-emerging Daniel Craig, and he soon followed that up with 2002’s The One and Only, before spending two decades in television, helming episodes of How to Make It in America, Treme, Jessica Jones, Boardwalk Empire, Ballers and Shooter. Four of the aforementioned shows were executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, and when the actor needed a filmmaker to direct March 2024’s Arthur the King during the pandemic, he gave Cellan Jones a second go-round in the feature space. The shoot went well, so well that after Cellan Jones locked picture, he quickly started prepping their current Apple TV+ release, The Family Plan.

The action-comedy centers around Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan’s characters’ suburban family,...

Dispatches From The Picket Lines, Day 22: 30 Rock Protest Draws Big Names & Huge Crowds In NYC
Image
As the WGA strike entered its fourth week, Tony Kushner swore, Steve Earle sang, Wanda Sykes led union chants and Busy Philipps told CEO jokes for more than 1,000 demonstrators and hundreds of onlookers who filled the street in front of NBCUniversal headquarters Tuesday in Midtown Manhattan.

With a starry speakers list, celebrities dotting the crowd and turnout from several local labor unions, a “Rally at the Rock” outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza in support of striking movie and television writers filled one barricaded side of West 49th Street between 5th and 6th avenues — the equivalent of three city blocks — with cheering, sign-waving protestors who stayed for more than two hours. It was the largest turnout for any event organized by members of the Writers Guild of America East since the strike against film and television producers began May 2, a WGA representative told Deadline.

Gambit Cosplay Shows Why He Was a '90s Icon (& Can Be Again)
Image
Gambit is just one of those characters fans can’t help but root for. He’s not the strongest X-Man, but he is absolutely the most charming, with quite literally the power to make anyone he talks to like him. Gambit becomes the main character in any room he walks into, and he knows it, which is what has made him such a ‘90s icon upon his introduction–something that is brought to life beautifully in truly astonishing cosplay.

Remy LeBeau aka Gambit is a mutant from New Orleans, Louisiana who was raised by a cult-like group known as the Thieves Guild, and his mutation made Gambit one of the Thieves Guild’s best members. Rolling off a successful collaboration on “Charlatan,” Films Boutique has boarded Agnieszka Holland’s next film “The Green Border,” which just completed principal photography in Poland.

Now in post production, “The Green Border” tells the fateful story of a family of Syrian refugees, a solitary English teacher from Afghanistan and a young border guard, all of whom meet on the Polish-Belarusian border during the most recent humanitarian crisis triggered by President Lukaschenko opening doors to migrants in Belarus as a back door to enter the EU.

The screenplay, penned by Holland, Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and Maciej Pisuk, is inspired by real events. Research for the film included hundreds of hours of document analysis, interviews with refugees, border guards, borderland residents, activists and experts.

HBO Suspends The Wire Creator David Simon's Deal After 25 Years
Image
Loyalty and quality of work mean nothing to corporations when weighed against maintaining their profit and power, and HBO proved this true once again by suspending their deal with "The Wire" creator David Simon. The news broke via Simon himself, who shared it on Twitter and noted (with video evidence) that when he received the news, he was doing the "write thing" — walking a picket line with his fellow Writers Guild of America (WGA) members.

In case you doubted whether these two events were connected, Simon clarified in a subsequent tweet that the suspension was a "Strike response and not unexpected." Simon is outspoken about his beliefs and (liberal) politics, so his supporting the strike with such fervor is no surprise.

Simon is best known for "The Wire" (which ran from 2002 to 2008) but he's remained one of the most prolific creators of TV at HBO since. His subsequent work includes...

‘The Wire’ Creator David Simon Hits the Picket Line After HBO Deal Suspended: ‘Doing the Write Thing’ (Video)
David Simon at an event for The Wire (2002)
David Simon tweeted from a WGA strike picket line on Monday that his deal with HBO has been suspended after 25 years with the cable channel. Simon is behind such prestige HBO TV as “The Wire,” “We Own this City” and “Treme,” and won two Emmys for his series “The Corner.”

“On the day that HBO called to suspend my deal after 25 years of writing television for them, I was doing the write thing,” he wrote in a caption to a video of writers chanting, “No contract, no peace.” Simon is not seen in the video he apparently shot himself.

According to an individual familiar with the situation at HBO, some suspensions have been made by phone call, but that letters to that effect have not yet been sent.

Image
The Wire creator David Simon has become one of the many writers/producers whose overall agreements have been suspended because of the strike.

Simon announced via Twitter Monday that HBO just suspended his deal “after 25 years of writing television for them.” Besides The Wire, Simon wrote on Generation Kill, Treme, The Deuce, The Plot Against America, Show Me a Hero and We Own This City.

The language in the overall deal suspension letters varies slightly — from “suspended engagement” (NBCUniversal) to “suspended services” as all notify showrunners that the compensation they receive under their term deals have been suspended effective May 2 when WGA went on strike following the expiration of the guild’s contract...

10 MCU Actors Who Appeared On Sitcoms
Image
As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues to rule the 2022 box office (with it almost becoming Phase 4's second highest grossing movie), it's impossible not to think about how far some of the movie stars have come since their careers began. Danai Gurira rose to prominence after starring in the HBO drama, Treme; Letitia Wright made a couple of guest appearances on Doctor Who and Top Boy, and Martin Freeman and Winston Duke appeared two huge sitcoms prior to joining the MCU (The Office UK and Modern Family).

While the MCU does boast a talented roster of stars, it does appear that Freeman and Duke aren't the only actors who have also appeared in several iconic TV sitcoms as well. It shouldn't really come as a surprise to fans either - after all, these experiences have likely helped them to create the hilarious characters and scenes they love today.

6 Things You May Not Know About "The Whale" Star Hong Chau
Image
Though it took almost 10 years for her acting career to take off, actor Hong Chau has notable film credits that include "Inherent Vice," "Downsizing," and "Treme." She's also appeared in a handful of shows like HBO's "Big Little Lies," "Bojack Horseman," and "Watchmen." Currently, Chau is garnering significant buzz for her roles in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" and "The Menu," the latter of which she stars alongside Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and John Leguizamo.

Chau started acting in the mid-2000s and mainly landed minor roles in TV shows like "NCIS" and "How I Met Your Mother," but she wouldn't get her first major film role until 2014's "Inherent Vice." While Chau had been circling in the Hollywood scene for nearly 10 years at that point, acting gigs were few and far between. In 2017, however, she exploded into the spotlight upon being casted in the film "Downsizing," and her performance...
