Family Equality’s Night at the Pier gala has set its sights on a power Hollywood couple to honor on May 12.

Uber-manager and Untitled Entertainment founding partner Jason Weinberg and his screenwriter husband Merritt Johnson will be feted at Pier Sixty in New York with the Luigi Caiola Luminary Award at an event set to celebrate love, equality, family and inspiration, as well as a decade of marriage equality thanks to the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court case of Obergefell v. Hodges.

Their honor will be presented by clients and close friends like Oscar nominee Demi Moore, Marlo Thomas and Debbie Harry. Other planned tributes include Peggy Gillespie, co-founder and director of Family Diversity Projects, receiving the Hostetter-Habib Family Award presented by renowned choreographer Bill T. Jones. The night’s program also plans talent performances from Broadway shows like The Outsiders, Six, The Wiz, Kimberly Akimbo, Some Like it Hot and more.

Less than a week after HBO's original movie Mountainhead received a title and a premiere date, it's already ski jumped into the top five in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie Emmy predictions.

Why? The telefilm about a group of billionaire friends who deal with a financial crisis while at a swanky ski resort has an awards-worthy pedigree both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Mountainhead is written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, the seven-time Emmy winner for Succession. This marks his directorial debut.

The cast is led by Steve Carell , Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef as the four main billionaires. They're joined by Hadley Robinson, Andy Daly, Ali Kinkade, Daniel Oreskes, David Thompson, Amie MacKenzie, and Ava Kostia.

Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for made-for-television movies, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series.

Netflix’s new limited series Adolescence, starring Stephen Graham and Jimmy (Reece Dinsdale), as they decide to get married after Ruth becomes pregnant. Set in Sheffield, the couple is threatened when the Soviet Union and the United States go to war. Ruth and Jimmy become separated as fallout spreads from a nuclear attack that destroys a NATO base near Sheffield, and Ruth must try to survive alone in the aftermath of the nuclear war.

Fremantle is moving its North America scripted business under Christian Vesper, the CEO of global drama and film, who will now up all drama and film operations for Fremantle across both the U.S. and Europe.

As part of the shift, Dante Di Loreto — who served as Fremantle’s North America president of scripted entertainment since 2017 and helped built the banner’s drama slate (including the award-winning Showtime series “Fellow Travelers”) — will transition to a producer deal with Fremantle.

Fremantle’s North America scripted business and labels will now report directly to Vesper, who will continue to report to Andrea Scrosati, Group COO and CEO Continental Europe.

The executive shuffle reflects an ongoing restructuring of Fremantle’s global business. In the U.K., the group recently laid off all the staff at drama producer Euston Films and documentary label Undeniable. The labels have not yet been technically shuttered, despite having no staff.

(Updated with CAA statement) Julia Ormond’s lawsuit against Disney, CAA and Miramax over an alleged 1995 sexual assault by the now-incarcerated Harvey Weinstein will be going forward.

“Upon the foregoing documents, and oral argument having been held before the court on May 20, 2024, it is ordered that the motions of defendants The Walt Disney Company, Creative Artists Agency, LLC, and Miramax Film NY, LLC are denied,” New York State Judge Suzanne Adams ruled today.

“Since the tragic death of her young son, acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs has receded from public life, unable to write, a ghost of her former self. But she finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is bought by Nile Sheldon, a famed and formidable real estate mogul who was once the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance,” reads the Netflix synopsis. “At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth – chasing his demons while fleeing her own – in a game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly.”

Netflix has ordered the limited series “The Beast in Me” with Claire Danes set to star, Variety has learned.

The series hails from writer Gabe Rotter, with Howard Gordon attached to serve as showrunner. The series reunites Gordon and Danes, as they previously worked together on the hit Showtime series “Homeland.” Danes starred in the series, which Gordon co-created and executive produced.

Claire Danes gives an over-the-shoulder moment while hitting the carpet at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Exclusive: Two months after Julia Ormond sued CAA, Disney and Harvey Weinstein for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, battery and more over an alleged 1995 sexual assault by the now incarcerated Weinstein, the agency and the Bob Iger-led corporation say they shouldn’t be a part of the suit and want out.

“Accepting the allegations in the Complaint as true, Harvey Weinstein’s alleged misconduct is disturbing and deplorable,” a filing Tuesday by Disney’s New York lawyers Cravath, Swaine & Moore asserts of Ormond’s October 4 complaint. “But the question is whether Plaintiff’s allegations are sufficient to state a claim for negligent supervision against Twdc,” it adds, in respect to the company’s ownership of the Weinstein’s’ Miramax from 1993-2010.

Actress Julia Ormond, best known for her work in Legends of the Fall, Temple Grandin and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, is taking a stance and making a point by suing two major studios and one of the industry’s leading casting agencies over an alleged sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein back in 1995.

As noted in a statement issued by Julia Ormond, the Emmy-winning actress said that she holds Disney, Miramax and Creative Arts Agency (Cca) accountable for covering up the alleged incident, in which Weinstein forced himself upon her. It should be noted that the official filing does not name former Disney heads Michael Eisner and Jeffery Katzenberg but the suit itself does.

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.

Since the Silent Era, theatrical releases have been a prime pastime, thanks to larger-than-life stories and the sense of silent community in theaters. Because of this dominance, big-screen films tend to overshadow many made-for-tv movies, regardless of quality. Such films get commissioned by networks or streaming services and are often produced on lower budgets, but shouldn't be scoffed at.

It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.

“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

With a slate of contenders who boast a collective total of 17 past Emmy nominations and five wins, the current Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress race is going to be one of the most exciting of the year. In the 82-minute telefilm, former two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria” and “The White Lotus”) portrays Reality Winner, the American intelligence specialist who, in 2017 at the age of 25, was arrested for allegedly leaking a report about potential Russian interference in the 2016 election to the media.

“Reality” made its initial debut at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year to great fanfare. It’s based on the play “Is This A Room” by Tina Satter, who now co-writes (with James Paul Dallas) and directs the movie. Co-stars include Josh Hamilton as Agent Garrick and Marchánt Davis.

Exclusive: WME Independent has unveiled the first image of Haley Bennett in the upcoming 19th Century champagne drama Clicquot ahead of launching sales on the title at the European Film Market.

Bennett stars in the titular role of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, who is popularly known in France as the “Grande Dame of Champagne”.

This real-life historic figure defied convention to take over her late husband’s fledgling wine business in Reims in 1805 after being widowed at the age of 27.

The production, announced on Deadline last year, is based on the 2008 novel The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It by Tilar J. Mazzeo.

Filming took place the French regions of Chablis and Reims last fall.

Directed by Thomas Napper (Jawbone), the pic chronicles the gritty journey in the early years of the Veuve Clicquot vineyard in 19th century France and brings to life the fascinating young woman behind the iconic orange label. The feature is based on the novel The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It by Tilar J. Mazzeo. Production began in the French regions of Chablis and Reims on October 24.
