The title 8ight Limbs refers to the way in which the torturer plays with his victims, which are always in pairs. Two people equate to eight limbs this is where the idea for the film originated from.
Although never explained, one assumes the relationship of Andy and Sophie is
quite close due to her reaction when she sees him for the first time. They could
be close friends, partners, or siblings. Jimmy and Sarah were written as a couple.
The twin torturer is purposely left mysterious and ambiguous. As with all
masked villains, the air of mystery surrounding them ensures the audience
cannot relate to them in any way and the relationship towards the torturer is
cold.
The film was shot on location in Caistor, at an abandoned mental health hospital.
It became derelict around 15 years ago, and was left to rot. The entire site since
has been completely demolished, and no building remains standing.
The first half was made to purely show the visceral nature of their situation. No
dialogue was needed to show the gravity of their situation. The second half
requires dialogue to explain why Jimmy and Sarah are there, and to push the
story forward realistically.
Typically, its not the journalist that takes photos. Press companies have
dedicated photographers to send with journalists to cover events and stories. In
this instance, Jimmy, being an upandcoming reporter, has been given the
opportunity to cover the story alone, so takes a disposable, and not a highend DSLR.
This also explains why Sarah is with him, and not another
reporter/photographer.
To maintain realism, the film was shot completely free of 100% stability. Tripod
shots would not have correctly portrayed the intensity of the characters emotion
and situation, so it was important to allow the camera to move freely around the
action.
