Warning: Spoilers
Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street starts off this episode of New Tricks. Unfortunately DAC Strickland doesn't appear in this episode (he's on a golfing holiday in La Manga), but still, it's worth watching. I deals with hypnosis and murder and other misdeeds.

Kirsty Mitchell is impressive in the role of Katie Briers, and the ending was kind of reminiscent of The Usual Suspects or The Sixth Sense. Brian gets kind of possessed at the end, and this reminded me of when Homer got a bit crazy in The Simpsons episode with Johnny Cash.

Murderous Hypnosis
TheLittleSongbird26 January 2018
Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

"Magic Majestic", while still a fun episode, is one of my least favourite episodes of Season 5. Calling "Magic Majestic" bizarre is an understatement (if not as much as "Wicca Work"), in some places such as the denouement and Gerry under hypnosis and the consequences almost too much on the wrong side of it.

Generally there is an intriguing mystery, with some clever things like the cause of the murder (though that was also a bit on the strange side).

Visually, "Magic Majestic" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Writing is intelligent, thought-provoking and classy, while also being very funny and high up in the entertainment value. This is all mixed adeptly with a seriousness without being overly so that it doesn't feel like 'New Tricks'.

A huge part of 'New Tricks' appeal is the chemistry between the four leads and their performances. The chemistry is so easy going and charming with a little tension.

One of the show's biggest delights is Alun Armstrong, achieves a perfect balance of funny comic timing and touching pathos which was maintained all the way up to his final episode. It is also lovely here to see his role in the team and skills appreciated more all the time. James Bolam's Jack is the quietest, most sensible (mostly) and most composed of the team, with a tragic personal life that Bolam portrays very touchingly without any overwrought-ness.

The only woman on the team, Amanda Redman more than holds her own in what is essentially the boss role of the four. Dennis Waterman brings some nice levity without unbalancing things.

Kirsty Mitchell and Sam Kelly give the best supporting turns of a solid bunch. The latter's chemistry with Waterman evokes fond memories.

Overall, not quite so majestic and somewhat bizarre but fun. 8/10 Bethany Cox

"Keep off the music of Gerry Rafferty"

Warning: Spoilers
The UCOS team has a new case of the death on, a TV magic show involving a stage hypnotist.

Brian has been introduced to the Case, by one of the people who were involved in the original incident.

The team discovered in the process of their investigation, that two characters are rivals for the same coveted Magic Crown.

In order to fully appreciate the TV shows ambiance they, feel it necessary to immerse themselves in the experience.

Gerry is a particularly Doubting Thomas when, it came to the efficiency of hypnotism. He is challenged to put his doubts to the test, and cannot remember anything of the experience.

Gerry's team mates are incredibly cagey, about what actually occurred. And they seem to be sworn to secrecy, about the actual proceedings.

The Life of a Magician.

Brian convinces Sandra to investigate the bizarre death of a man, who was allegedly killed by his wife, after she had been hypnotised.

It's a solid episode, I can't say it's a favourite, but it's certainly watchable. The story is one of those that doesn't perhaps hang together, nor are the events that believable, but there are some well drawn characters, moments of humour, and an intriguing mystery.

I did like the scenes between Skye and Brian, there was something so nasty about his trick, almost a chilling moment. Bazeley did a good job here as the clever and devious magician. I really liked Sara Stewart here, good performance from her, and utterly beautiful. San Kelly provides the laughs.

I couldn't help but think of an episode of Murder, she wrote, the one where one of those hypnotised had cotton wool on their ears, it has a similar vibe.

Solid, 6/10.

Magicians, and Brian goes a bit nuts
scsaxe29 April 2022
The case is a bit weird, involving hypnosis and suggestion, but makes up for it with Brian going a bit nuts about the whole thing, and a surprise at the end. The combination works out all right as a pretty fun, about average episode of New Tricks.

Disappointed with Season 5
lemurlou25 January 2021
The plots are getting predictable. I knew the murderer in this episode and the previous straight off. In Season 4, the writers opened all these threads about the character's personal lives, then acted like they never happened. Will Sandra find the truth about her father? Will she ever find a boyfriend? What about Jack?? No one talks about what happened in S4's finale, or how he ran off without asking for leave. I'm not even sure he still talks to Mary. Make up your mind, writers. Either follow up on backstories or concentrate on great UCOS cases, but please don't fail to do either.
