Eyre will direct from a script written by bestselling author Rose Tremain, based on her own short story and forthcoming novel. The film is being produced by Julia Taylor-Stanley and Kevin Loader.

Pat Cooper, an acerbic stand-up comedian who later had a career acting in films and TV series including Analyze This, Seinfeld and the original Charlie’s Angels and was a favorite of Howard Stern, died Tuesday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 93.

Ah, Ready Steady Cook – you were a product of simpler times. The BBC’s teatime TV cooking show saw two contestants bring along a bag of ingredients, team up with a celebrity chef, (becoming Team Green Pepper and Team Red Tomato) and spend 20 minutes transforming what they’d brought into a tasty dinner.
They only had a maximum budget of £5 (which these days would probably only stretch to half a cucumber and a pot noodle) so the dishes weren’t fancy – none of this nonsense about serving some daft gravy-with-notions and calling it a ‘jus’. No, the likes of Ainsley Harriott or Anthony Worrall Thompson usually just hastily assembled a lasagne, and then the audience voted for a winner – and by ‘vote’, we mean they lifted up a picture of a green pepper or a red tomato.

Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.

May (or: next week) will bring an eleven-film celebration of Jennifer Jason Leigh, highlights including Verhoeven’s Flesh + Blood, Miami Blues, Alan Rudolph’s Mrs. Parker, her directorial debut The Anniversary Party, and Synecdoche, New York, and a special introduction from Leigh. Another actor’s showcase localizes directorial collaborations: Jimmy Stewart’s time with Anthony Mann, an eight-title series boasting the likes of Winchester ’73 and The Man from Laramie. Two more: a survey of ’80s Asian-American cinema (Chan Is Missing being the best-known) and 14 movies by Seijun Suzuki.
That would be enough for one month (or two), but No Bears and Cette maison will have their streaming premieres, while Criterion Editions offers the Infernal Affairs trilogy (plus its packed set), Days of Heaven, and the aforementioned Chan Is Missing.

Anthony Hopkins Urges His Grandson To Fight Back Against Racism In New Trailer For ‘Armageddon Time’
The trailer for James Gray’s “Armageddon Time”, starring Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and more, is here.
Hopkins’ onscreen grandson Paul Graff, played by Banks Repeta, is told off for hanging out with his Black best friend Johnny Crocker (Jaylin Webb) in the newly-released trailer.
Hopkins’ Aaron Graff then talks about his own Jewish heritage in the clip, recalling how his mother had to move to the U.S. otherwise she’d get killed.
He asks his grandson when the youngster says he didn’t say anything to the bullies, “You think that’s smart?”
“Next time those schmucks say anything bad, you’re going to say something,” Hopkins tells his grandson in the teaser, adding: “You’re going to be a mensch, okay?”

Social media is bad and scary, young women are frequently horrible to each other and everyone spends too much time on their phones is actually Not the main take away from the first three episodes of this sort-of-ya sort-of-horror series new to BBC Three. It’s actually a lot more nuanced than that in a series that initially plays like a mash up of 2010s horror, 1990s teen drama and Derry Girls’ potty-mouth rough-and-ready sense of humour. Weird combo though that may sound, in Red Rose it works, picking the best of the tropes, populating the show with likeable and believable characters and sprinkling modern social realism into the mix.

In a clash of the actioners, Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man narrowly defeated Mortal Kombat at the box office last weekend, with the two titles driving almost half of all ticket sales.
Distributed by Studiocanal, Ritchie’s latest Jason Statham-starrer opened on $1.7 million from 389 screens, an average of $4,444. With previews, it sits on $1.8 million.
Co-written by Ritchie with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, the film is based on the 2004 French feature Cash Truck by Nicolas Boukhrief.
Statham plays H, hired by a cash truck company. During one job, the truck gets held up at gunpoint and he single-handedly deals with the robbers. Secretly, H is hunting for the people who murdered his son during a similar robbery, and plans to use his new position to set traps for every would-be robber in the city until he finds his son’s killers.

BAFTA has published the longlists for its 2021 Film Awards, which members will now whittle down to the final nominations. You can see the lists in full below, there are 15 per category for most awards, with exceptions.
These aren’t nominations, so drawing too many conclusions from them is premature at this stage. However, if a title didn’t make the cut here, it won’t be getting a nom.
A few takeaways: as per the Globes, Minari is in for foreign-language movie but not for Best Film (Another Round made both); Tenet missed both Best Film and British Film but did make Director and below-the-line categories; Spike Lee isn’t on the Director list, but Da 5 Bloods is on nine including Best Film and Screenplay; Malcolm & Marie missed everything aside from the two lead performances; zilch for On The Rocks, and fairly slim pickings for Apple in total,...

Exclusive: Apple Studios has committed to finance and produce Kitbag, the Napoleon Bonaparte epic that Ridley Scott will direct, with Oscar-winning Joker star Joaquin Phoenix playing the French emperor and military leader. Production will begin in early 2022 in the UK. Scott and Kevin Walsh will produce for Scott Free.
Deadline last October revealed the aspirations of Scott and Phoenix to re-team on this film, which now has a screenplay by David Scarpa. He wrote the Scott-directed Getty kidnap drama All The Money in the World. Scott Free’s deal with 20th Century Studios obliged him to show it there last fall, but it became free and clear towards year end, and a world rights deal closed within the past two weeks at Apple Studios, where Scott Free has its first look deal for television projects.

Each weekend brings the latest batch of new releases to VOD and the various streaming services competing for both the eyes and wallets of viewers around the world, and the latest offering serves up a more eclectic bunch of titles than usual. One which covers everything from a $200 million epic and a surrealist horror to the usual mix of bargain basement genre flicks and even the return to our screens of Pauly Shore.
The most high-profile release of the weekend is obviously Disney’s Mulan, which has finally arrived six months behind schedule and exclusively to the Mouse House’s streaming platform. Although the calls to boycott the latest live-action remake have resurfaced, there’s no way that Niki Caro’s historical actioner turns out to be anything other than a huge money-spinner, especially when reviews have largely been very positive.

Peacock has unveiled a slate of original films, all of which will debut on the service in September.
The NBCU streamer, which launched nationally just over a month ago, will premiere a doc on Harry Belafonte’s brief stint hosting “The Tonight Show,” Emilio Estevez’s pic “The Public,” starring Alec Baldwin, and a doc from NFL star Malcolm Jenkins which celebrates the humanity of Black men and boys.
“The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show” was supposed to launch at the Tribeca Film Festival, but soon after the festival didn’t take place, Variety caught up with the doc’s producers and director Yoruba Richen to talk about the significance of Belafonte hosting, and how it reflects on the current late night landscape.
“It says a lot about the politics of today and where we are,” Richen said. “And that late night is still dominated by white men.
