Robert Downey Jr. has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer. 2023 was marked by the blockbuster hits of Barbie and Oppenheimer, popularly known as the Barbenheimer, after the two films became a cultural phenomenon. Although the Margot Robbie starrer became the frontrunner with its box office collection, Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller has been making waves for potentially being the biggest winner at the 2024 Oscars.
Barbenheimer (Barbie and Oppenheimer)
However, despite that, Ryan Gosling, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Barbie, recently claimed that the biographical thriller rode on the coattails of the fantasy comedy, only to lose the Oscar to the Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. Wins His First Oscar For Oppenheimer
Robert Downey Jr., who earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in the 2023 film Oppenheimer, has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 96th Academy Awards.

Plot: Supernatural horror, based on the eponymous online phenomenon, a ritual conducted in an elevator, in which players attempt to travel to another dimension using a set of rules that can be found online.
Review: After last year’s Glorious, Rebekah McKendry has become a name that my ears perk up to whenever I see a film with her name attached. She has an understanding of the genre and a level of technical prowess that makes her movies an absolute treat. Or at least I thought so. Because Elevator Game is certainly no Glorious. The premise of a game you play that kills you has been done time and time again, but this one has an interesting hook with it being set on an elevator, utilizing it as a portal to another dimension. But, concept aside, there’s very little else to attach to here.

Elevator Game is the new film by Rebekah McKendry, a director who caught my attention with All the Creatures Were Stirring and impressed me with Glorious. On the other hand, she also has a writing credit on the dismal Bring It On: Cheer or Die. So I was a little apprehensive when she did another teen-themed film that not only shared a lot of that film’s cast but was based on an urban legend that’s about ten years past its expiration date.
However, it was an enjoyably creepy legend. I even got talked into playing it walking back to my hotel after several films and several beers at Sfff one year. Of course, nothing happened, but it was unnerving when the doors opened and I...

In the Marvel vs. DC debate, it's important to remember that the latter had a headstart of several decades. Some of DC Comics' most popular characters were introduced on the page in the late 1930s and early 1940s, allowing them to stand at the very base of the pop culture firmament. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman both enjoyed massive success on the page and on the screen before the hotshot company Marvel entered its Golden Age in earnest. Marvel's star characters Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, et al, didn't hit shelves until the early '60s. While Marvel found its footing, Batman was starring in one of the best superhero movies ever made.
In cinemas, it took Marvel equally long to find a toehold. Films like "Superman" and "Batman" were overwhelmingly huge for decades, while Marvel had to be content with the success of "The Incredible Hulk" on television.

Last year, director Rebekah McKendry impressed our reviewer Tyler Nichols with the horror film Glorious, which took place in a rest stop bathroom. (You can read Tyler’s 8/10 review at This Link.) Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and it’s going to be released through the Shudder streaming service very soon… just not as soon as we had previously heard. Elevator Game was once set to start streaming on August 11th, but its release date has since shifted back to September 15th. And with that date just over a month away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Elevator Game will be available for Shudder subscribers in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. It will also stream on AMC+ in some areas.

Spring is here and we’re kicking off our May slate with The Ancestral, the disturbing new horror film from renowned director Le-Van Kiet that’s now streaming on Screambox!
The Ancestral released theatrically in Vietnam last year. It held the top spot for two consecutive weekends, making it the second consecutive success for the visionary director Kiet. His bold style first caught the eye of the international community after his film Furie became Vietnam’s highest-grossing film of all time; the film went on to become the country’s submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature.
In The Ancestral…
“After suffering a family tragedy, a widower moves his two daughters to a centuries-old ancestral home. When both daughters fall prey to sleep paralysis and night terrors, their father seeks the help of a local psychologist. These chilling secrets and frightening visions eventually prove that not everything is...

Melanie Lynskey admitted losing touch with Kate Winslet was “heartbreaking.”
The pair starred in the 1994 flick “Heavenly Creatures” together when they were younger, and became close.
However, with Winslet going on to star in blockbusters like the “Titanic”, while Lynskey also had her own successful acting career, the pair lost touch.
In a new episode of Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Lynskey said: “When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than some breakups that I’ve had.
“It was so painful and it wasn’t like anything happened, it’s just she became a gigantic, international movie star and she didn’t have a lot of time and then, suddenly, she’d be in Los Angeles and not have time,” she added.

Last year, director Rebekah McKendry impressed our reviewer Tyler Nichols with the horror film Glorious, which took place in a rest stop bathroom. (You can read Tyler’s 8/10 review at This Link.) Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and Deadline reports that Elevator Game is going to be released through the Shudder streaming service, just like Glorious was!
Elevator Game will be available for Shudder subscribers in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to stream as of August 11th. It will also stream on AMC+ in some areas.
Michael Goi (Megan Is Missing) was originally attached to direct the film, but by the time production began McKendry was at the helm. Exclusive: AMC Networks’ horror streamer Shudder has acquired the supernatural feature Elevator Game. The Rebekah McKendry-directed flick will stream on Shudder beginning August 11, 2023 in territories including the U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It will also stream on AMC+ where available.
Based on the online phenomenon of the same name, Elevator Game is penned by Travis Seppala (Captive). It follows socially awkward teenager Ryan, who ingratiates himself into a group of recent high school graduates that run an online web series debunking urban legends to find his sister, who disappeared months earlier, probably while taking the dangerous challenge. Playing the game involves riding the elevator in a specific sequence to invoke a supernatural creature called “The 5th Floor Woman.”

March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

American rapper Macklemore has likened addiction to allergy.
In the wake of his latest album’s release, the ‘Can’t Hold Us’ hitmaker made an appearance on health podcast ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty’ and opened up about his sobriety journey, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Looking back at how he became addicted, the Grammy-winning rapper began by stating: “The easiest way for me to describe it is that it was like an allergy.”
He further elaborated in the latest episode of the health podcast: “It was once I had a sip or a hit or a sniff or whatever it was, I wanted more and I couldn’t turn that off. And I never could.”
When asked about how he came to the decision to recover, Macklemore said that he had to ask himself: “Life or death. What do I choose?”
He continued by explaining: “I had been lucky enough that...

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to my faves of ‘22. It’s become redundant to say “it was another great year” but goddammit I can’t lie: 2022 was loaded with quality horror, up and down the line, across all media.
This means as with every recent year, I have missed several releases – a few of the big ones, and several smaller yet intriguing entries. My frequent bouts of absenteeism this time around weren’t because of any bouts of laziness or writer’s malaise, but rather due to working on my first book, A Cut Below: A Celebration Of B Horror Movies, 1950s - 1980s, coming this year from McFarland Publishing! Twelve film festivals each housing essays on five films with a common theme. I can hardly wait to share it with the world. End of plug!

Every year around this time, millions express their desire to start anew. The determination to better themselves is unshakable. And then after a few weeks, most give up.
Well, never fear! I am here to help save you some time and effort with some horror films that will give you the best excuses to just forgo the New Year’s resolutions this year and live happily without the guilt of knowing you didn’t follow through. Science fiction is one of the most versatile genres not only in film but in the arts in general. It is a genre intrinsically tied with the social, political, and economic strife of any particular time — oftentimes, the cyclical nature of humanity will mean that a sci-fi movie relevant in the 1950s will become relevant in the 2020s. Without science fiction, who knows what the landscape of film and television would be like today?
All of this is to say that 2022 was arguably terrible, although the sci-fi films released this year were pretty damn good. While some movies had their hype campaigns accentuated with festival runs, others seemed to come out of nowhere to delight genre fans and casual viewers alike. From micro-budget films to big Hollywood blockbusters, the genre was rife with sci-fi movies that not only helped diversify the genre but also made us think about it in totally new ways.

Fresh off playing a pivotal role in the horror film Smile (watch it Here), which earned over 200 million at the global box office, Caitlin Stasey has signed on to play the lead in the horror thriller Devil Inside. Stasey is joined in the cast by Lou Taylor Pucci (Evil Dead 2013) and Ryan Kwanten (Glorious). Devil Inside is currently in pre-production, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2023.
Directed by Jonathan auf Der Heide (Van Diemen’s Land), who also wrote the screenplay with Tom Holloway, Devil Inside is described as being in the vein of 28 Days Later and It Comes at Night – and Variety even used the dreaded “elevated” label when covering the movie, saying it’s “pitched as an elevated genre film”.
Elevated or not, the movie will see Stasey taking on the role of Eva, a young virologist, who helps the local park...

Plot: When a cheer squad practices their routines on Halloween weekend in an abandoned school, they are picked off one by one by an unknown killer.
Review: I’m not sure what I expected when it came to Bring it On: Cheer or Die, but I can at least say it lives up to the name. Because there is a metric crap ton of cheerleading, with just a sprinkle of death. And most of those deaths are so uneventful, that it essentially just feels like a high school theater project. And by the time you see the killer’s costume, it just further solidifies that idea.
Cheer or Die begins in the ancient year 2002 where we get to see a major cheerleading accident that leads to someone’s death. How did they die exactly? Falling 15 feet from the top of the pyramid down onto the padded platform below. She’s...

No, you’re not imagining things, I’m reviewing a film from the Bring It On franchise. Bring It On: Cheer or Die takes the never-ending series into horror territory and revisits the classic slasher trope of a killer mascot knocking off the cheer squad. An unwritten rule of public restroom usage is that one should never attempt to strike up a conversation with the person one stall over, and that’s doubly true if the person next to you is an all-powerful god sent down from the cosmos. After a night of grieving and binge-drinking leads to hugging the toilet bowl at a gross rural rest stop, Wes (Ryan Kwanten) finds himself in that scenario when the person in the stall introduces themselves. That person is nothing more than a voice funneled through a gloryhole, but what that voice requests of Wes (and why) raises […]

My favorite Toronto premiere memory was the one where eventual Best Picture winner Spotlight played to a raucous crowd reaction at the Princess of Wales Theatre, the emotion ratcheted up even further when the Boston Globe journalists who cracked the Catholic Church pedophile scandals took the stage and stood next to the actors who played them onscreen. It has been several years since TIFF has been able to show why this is such a special festival, because of the Covid epidemic and Canada’s protective lockdown of its borders. Last night marked a turning point for TIFF as a preeminent showcase for awards season movies, with the back to back Princess of Wales Theatre world premieres of Netflix’s Rian Johnson-directed Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, followed by the premiere of Amblin/Universal’s Steven Spielberg love letter to his family and a movie camera, The Fabelmans. In practically no time at all, Shudder has established itself as the prime streaming destination for all sorts of hidden gems in the horror genre. Let's put it this way, for a recent example: Any platform that provides a home for a fever dream as genuinely unhinged and utterly unforgettable as Phil Tippett's "Mad God" deserves all the plaudits and appreciation it gets.
Not content to rest on such refreshing success stories, however, Shudder is moving ahead with its next prized acquisition. Plot: After a breakup, Wes ends up at a remote rest stop. He finds himself locked inside the bathroom with a mysterious figure speaking from an adjacent stall. Wes soon realizes he is involved in a truly terrible situation.
Review: Because of films like Mandy and TV Shows like Lovecraft Country, cosmic horror has really made its way to the forefront of the genre in recent years. It’s something that really allows filmmakers to go crazy with their visual creativity. But Glorious does more than just provide visual thrills, giving a story where the stakes couldn’t be larger: the fate of the entire universe. While the movie is definitely a Lovecraftian Creature Feature, it’s also a wonderful character piece. Whether it’s the mysterious cosmic creature voiced by Jk Simmons or the soft-spoken Wes, there’s a lot to unpack with our two leads. And they definitely...
