The new Netflix streaming comedy Tires is in the vein of single-camera sitcoms from Greg Daniels or Michael Schur. Yet, Tires is far from being on par with The Office or Parks and Recreation. In fact, this will probably be the first and last time the new Shane Gillis comedy is mentioned in the same breath as those classic sitcoms.
That’s because Tires is a poor imitation of those workplace comedies. At its worst, the new sitcom can be tedious, grating, and painfully unfunny. At its best, the series is something you have on in the background—a harmless, politically incorrect excursion. Yes, the jokes are on the hapless and clueless characters. However, that doesn’t make it good or mean its heart is in the right place.

When you think about shows that have gone off the rails, Riverdale, Dexter, Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother, or Glee usually come to mind.
The majority of the time, it isn't enjoyable. The digression can make for poor television.
However, there are certain cases where it makes TV gold.
Creating Uniqueness
Keeping an audience interested and on the edge of their seats can be challenging.
We want to be enthralled, but that comes with the fact that doing this means changing plots, characters, or many other factors.
Going off the rails does not always have to be a negative thing.
Community, for example, started as a traditional sitcom, but its ever-evolving nature created a cult classic and a truly entertaining hit that never became stagnant.
And then there's The Leftovers, a drama that significantly changed after its first season.

Some folks prefer to spend their TV hours soaking up procedural dramas.
Others prefer a soapy historical fiction.
As for me, I will die on the hill that the mockumentary-style sitcom is the best genre on television.
There's no way to discuss every masterpiece, so we'll focus on a few examples of mockumentary shows.
Why do they work?
Let me count the ways. First, it's the absence of the fourth wall for me.
There's something special about creating a universe with characters and ever-so-slightly unrealistic situations and making your audience feel like they're part of it.
Take The Office, for example. When Jim looks directly into the camera after Michael or someone says something absurd, we get to be in on the joke.
Instead of being spectators stuck on the other side of the screen, it's like we're transported into the bullpen, nodding in understanding as Jim stares down the lens.

There's nothing like a good sitcom after a long day of hard work. No matter how tired or upset you are, there are some shows that can make all your worries go away in just a few episodes, and for that they're considered truly iconic. It just so happens that a good portion of them come from NBC.
So, if you thought NBC was only a home for dark and gritty procedural franchises, check out the list of shows below to remind yourself how many other shows the network has released, Law & Order and One Chicago aside.
Cheers (1982-1993)
The classic bar-centric sitcom that followed a bartender and his friends and co-workers could have been canceled in 1982. The show failed to impress viewers from the start, but later redeemed itself to become one of the most popular and highly rated television shows of all time. Thanks to NBC, it survived to air 11 more seasons.

After his famed role as Don Draper on AMC’s critically acclaimed drama series Mad Men, Jon Hamm has experienced a particularly peculiar career transition in recent years. Also known for his work in Sucker Punch & Top Gun: Maverick, the actor, 53, has acted in both highly regarded film and TV roles during his career.
But did you know, nestled within his portfolio of work, there lies a film that has almost slipped through the cracks of cinematic memory?
John Hamm in Stolen | 2 Bridges Productions
In 2009, he took on the role in Stolen, a frequently overlooked chapter of Hamm’s life that true cinephiles may recall. Though the actor’s renowned charm and depth could elevate any role, this murder mystery remarkably stood as an endeavor that slipped past audiences and critics alike.

Aubrey Plaza was on hand to promote her latest movie, Megalopolis—the Francis Ford Coppola epic science fiction drama decades in the making—at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
I love Plaza’s often whimsical and quirky red carpet style, but I’m not thrilled with her Loewe Cannes Film Festival premiere ensemble. Fortunately, she quickly redeemed herself at the Megalopolis photocall by wearing a summery Miu Miu outfit.

10. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008)
An instant classic of an animated movie, Avatar: The Last Airbender has seen too many failed attempts at its live adaptations, but the original still stands unmatched.
In the world of Avatar, some people are able to bend the elements, and one chosen can bend all four of them — and this time, it’s a boy who must also save the world.
You can watch Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix and Apple TV.
9. House (2004–2012)
When it comes to fan favorite fictional sociopaths, few characters stand as popular as Dr. House (save for BBC’s Sherlock who famously did not have a perfect finale). The cynical and anti-social House is a brilliant medic who saves lives in cases his colleagues can’t crack, but he does it while being a massive thorn in their backs.

I’m going to tell you something that will instantly rattle a millennial body to its core: “Glee,” the Fox musical dramedy that became a phenomenon before becoming a dark cultural tale, premiered 15 years ago, on May 19, 2009.
To make you feel slightly better about the passage of time, that date is a bit of a cheat: Because Fox suspected it had an honest-to-goodness hit on its hands, the network premiered the first episode after the “American Idol” Season 8 finale in May, before beginning the full season a few months later in September.
Still, May 19 was the day the world first was re-reminded of the wonder of “Don’t Stop Believin,’” witnessed the instantly iconic combo of cringe and charisma that was Rachel Berry/Lea Michele, and considered the shocking declaration that someone could be both an athlete and a singer.

Aubrey Plaza is a charming actress and delightful comedian, but what catches the attention of her fans the most are the very quirky characters she often chooses to portray. In her breakthrough role in Parks and Recreation, the actress is deadpan and sarcastic, while in her latest The White Lotus’ the actress is known for her cynicism while battling marital tension. Even in the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the actress plays an ambitious power-hungry journalist.

So, what is it about the actress starring only in such unconventional roles? Plaza states that it is just her way of making the world a better place by accepting characters that one normally would describe as outsiders.

"The Office" is one of the greatest television comedies of all time, which is probably why it's still one of the most popular streaming titles (with rights previously costing $500 million) nearly a decade after it premiered on NBC. Despite a few rough seasons in the back half of the show's run, the series still stands tall as a pinnacle of small screen hilarity. Those low points came after showrunner/creator Greg Daniels left the series at the end of season four to focus on "Parks & Recreation," and they got worse after Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin (something Steve Carell didn't exactly choose to do).
With both of those pillars of "The Office" gone, the writers struggled to fill the holes left in the show, both comedically and narratively, by making Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) the new manager and leaning more into the family drama of Jim (John Krasinski) and...

Chris Pratt has paid tribute to his friend and former stunt double, Tony McFarr, who died on Monday (May 13) at 47 years old. Antonio “Tony” McFarr worked as Pratt’s stunt double on numerous projects, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, two of the Jurassic World films, and the 2016 movie Passengers. “Devastated to hear about the loss of my friend and former stunt double,” the Parks and Recreation star wrote on his Instagram Story on Thursday (May 16). “We did several movies together. We golfed, drank whiskey, smoked cigars, and spent endless hours on set. I’ll never forget his toughness.” McFarr passed away on Monday at his home just outside Orlando, Florida, according to TMZ. A cause of death has not yet been reported. His mother told the outlet that McFarr’s death was “unexpected and shocking” as her son was “healthy and active.” In his tribute, Pratt recalled an...

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. When the usual undercover guy is suspended, he’s enlisted to pose as a hitman. He turns out to be a natural at undercover work, with the police using him to entrap people taking out contracts. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.
Review: Richard Linklater’s Hit Man is the movie where Glen Powell finally becomes a legit star. Aubrey Plaza has rubbished speculation that 'Megalopolis' has endured a difficult production. The 39-year-old actress plays journalist Wow Platinum in the new sci-fi epic from Francis Ford Coppola and has dismissed reports that 'The Godfather' filmmaker was struggling to keep control on set amid talk of a high staff turnover and escalating budget.Speaking to Deadline, Aubrey said of the rumours: "I thought it was kind of funny."I would defend Francis all day long, but he doesn't need my defence. I think when you're on the inside of it, and you know what's really going down, it's almost like, 'Let them make up their stories and let them cause a big ruckus about it. Why not? Adam Scott might have the most thankless part in Madame Web. He exists simply to share the screen with a listless Dakota Johnson and trade expository dialogue about how her character Cassie Webb doesn’t like children or anything related to family—obnoxious signposts to give the movie something like a character arc. Cast to bring the good will he earned playing wholesome snarks in Party Down and Parks and Recreation, Scott delivers his lines with a wry reserve that feels like resignation.
And yet, Scott’s mere presence in the film gives Madame Web an important quality lacking in all of Spider-Man’s MCU appearances. Because Scott isn’t playing any guy who shows way too much concern for his co-worker’s disinterest in being a mother; he’s playing Ben Parker, beloved and ill-fated uncle to Peter Parker.

Aubrey Plaza first rose to stardom when she portrayed the role of April Ludgate in the renowned TV Series Parks and Recreation. Since then the actress never had to look, as she has gone on to work in some of the most successful films, leaving an indelible mark in the film industry. Exclusive: Fox is tripling down on The Floor.
The network has handed the Rob Lowe-hosted game show a second and third season after its first season performed well for the network and was spoofed on Saturday Night Live.
The news comes ahead of Fox’s Upfront, which is being held in New York tomorrow.
The show, which Deadline revealed had landed at Fox last June, premiered on January 2. It ran for ten episodes through to the end of February.
The network said that the premiere episode amassed 4.4M multi-platform viewers after seven days of viewing, per Nielsen data, which is a 73% boost from the 2.5M that tuned in same-day, making it the network’s most-streamed game show ever and the network’s most-watched Tuesday unscripted debut in more than 13 years, since Masterchef premiered in 2010. Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.

Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.

Casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord was a pretty big gamble for Marvel. After all, to most of us he was the man-child Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation and nothing more. Fortunately for Pratt and the MCU, director James Gunn saw something special in him. While a number of actors also auditioned for the part, one who still remembers that moment and why he didn’t land Peter Quill is Joel Edgerton, who is well aware he just didn’t understand the tone they were going for.
Appearing on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast (via Variety), Joel Edgerton remembered Guardians of the Galaxy being one of the most high-profile projects he missed out on, probably for good reason. “Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris [Pratt], didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did. The Lincoln Lawyer star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo has been cast in a fresh take on the Jurassic World films. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who led the $3.96 billion trilogy, will not be returning for the new film, directed by Gareth Edwards. While other prominent stars like Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey are also part of the film, it is highly unlikely that the film will make money like Pratt’s films.
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo will replace Chris Pratt in the next film in the Jurassic Park series after Jurassic World: Dominion
When it comes to the box office numbers of films, it almost appears that the Guardians of the Galaxy star is a money magnet. He has been part of a number of billion-dollar-grossing projects in recent times, including last year’s film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim has been tapped as the female lead opposite Adam Pally and Stephen Curry in the single-camera Peacock comedy series Mr. Throwback. Her casting is not expected to impact her duties on the NBC sketch comedy series, which is in the same corporate family.
The Mr. Throwback mocumentary, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny (Happy Endings alum Pally), a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA great Steph Curry.
Nwodim will play Kimberly, Steph’s childhood friend, business partner, manager and essentially his overall handler. Kimberly, Steph, and Danny all grew up together, and while Kimberly is happy to see Danny pop back up in their lives, he’s not about to let Steph get taken advantage of by any of Danny’s schemes.

Just like Friends and The Office, Parks and Recreation is a show that we keep going back to. One rewatch is never enough now, is it? While the first season received mixed reviews from critics and was often compared to The Office, the series had a brilliant comeback starting from the second season. The show stars Adam Scott, Chris Pratt, Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, and more.
A still from Parks and Recreation (2009 – 2015)
The show ended in 2015 but the cast reunited for a special reunion episode in 2020 before closing the chapter for good. But that doesn’t mean fans cannot keep holding on to that thread of hope of seeing their favorite characters return, right? In a recent interview, Adam Scott gets candid about the possibility of gathering the cast for an actual Parks and Recreation reboot.

Before Chris Pratt donned the iconic Star-Lord suit in the MCU, he was known as the lovable Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation. Pratt’s characters prior to his superhero transformation often embodied a larger physique, evidenced by his deliberate weight gain of 60 pounds for the film Delivery Man, because he believed it suited the character.

Netflix’s new show Fiasco by Igor Gotesman is an absolute riot! Exclusive: Now that we know the competition slates, it’s time to bring out the star packages that will line the Cannes Market. Here’s one inspirational movie package that ought to register strongly with the buying crowd. Way of The Warrior Kid is slated to begin production this summer, with Chris Pratt starring and McG directing a Will Staples-scripted adaptation of the the novel by Jock Willink. He is the retired Navy Seal who found a thriving second career as podcast host, bestselling author and motivational speaker.
UTA Independent Film Group and FilmNation will introduce the script shortly. If it’s as good as the backstories here, it ought to be a hot property. It’s a youth empowerment tale, only the title character isn’t waving a magic wand or wearing spandex. He’s a self-doubting kid who gets bullied and is hard pressed to complete a single pullup.

The NBCUniversal streamer continues to make small, but steady climbs in its quest for streaming survival.
Comcast’s flagship streaming service Peacock has been on a slow but steady climb since launching in 2020. While still amongst the smaller platforms from major media companies, it is no longer an easily ignored also-ran, seemingly fighting for scraps as the streaming world threatened to leave it behind. We suppose this news was inevitable.
In the age of spinoffs, reboots, and ever-expanding franchises, a show as popular as The Office was going to return from the dead at some point.
Not only did the original series run for nine seasons on NBC, the Steve Carell-led cringe comedy has proven surprisingly successful with subsequent generations, becoming Netflix's most-streamed show before being reclaimed by Peacock.
