One week after the death of band member Liam Payne, all five of One Direction’s albums have returned to high positions in the UK music chart, along with the singer’s solo album.

The BBC reports that Midnight Memories, the band’s third album, holds the highest position at number 13, with a reported sales increase of 517% week-on-week, according to the Official Charts Company. Three of the band’s singles have also re-entered the chart.

Payne died on October 16 following a fall from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fans have continued to gather around the hotel, mourning their pop idol with candles, poems and flowers. A vigil was held there last weekend.

American Cinematheque’s Proof Film Festival announced the Filmmaker Award winners at their second annual festival in Culver City on Sunday.

This year’s festival featured 46 official short film selections. Each one had to convey a proof of concept of how the filmmakers would develop their short into a full-length feature or series.

Liz Sargent’s “Take Me Home” took home the Grand Jury Award. Her short film follows two sisters, Anna and Emily, as they share a rocky reunion after their mother’s passing. The two navigate Anna’s cognitive disability as they rebuild their relationship. Along with the award, Sargent also received a $60,000 camera package, courtesy of Panavision, to assist her with fleshing out a larger project from their proof-of-concept submission.

Niall Horan has paid tribute to fellow One Direction bandmate Liam Payne following his death at age 31, saying: “I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently. I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever.”

A joint statement was released by all four members Thursday before individual posts were made by Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson on their personal social media accounts. Horan wrote on his Instagram on Friday after Payne attended the Irishman’s concert in South America just two weeks prior.

“I’m absolutely devastated about the passing of my amazing friend, Liam,” Horan said. “It just doesn’t feel real. Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure.”

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik released a joint statement on Thursday to address the tragic death of their former bandmate Payne, after he was announced to have died at the age of 31.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

Liz Sargent’s Take Me Home, a deeply personal short film that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, will be rebuilt as a full-length feature.

The adaptation is being done in partnership with Caring Across Generations, a national advocacy organization that focuses on aging, disability and care, which will help finance the project while raising additional financing in part through philanthropic support. Shooting is eyed to start this fall with a projected release date sometime next year. Caring Across Generations is also committed to lead an impact campaign in conjunction with the launch.

The International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (Icfr) has called for the release of pioneering Mynamar female documentary maker Shin Daewe who has been sentenced to life in prison for possessing a drone.

Daewe was arrested at a bus station in Yangon on October 15 2023 when soldiers found a filming drone in her luggage. The Myanmar authorities brought the case to trial on January 10, accusing her of violating the counter-terrorism laws. She was allowed no legal representation during the closed trial of a military tribunal and was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment.

One of Myanmar’s leading female filmmakers, Shin Daewe was arrested in Yangon in October after she had gone to collect a drone.

After three months on remand she was tried by a military tribunal, inside the Insein Prison and without legal representation. She was sentenced to life imprisonment for violating Myanmar’s anti-terrorism law by possessing a drone.

Myanmar is ruled by a military junta that seized control in February 2021 from a civilian government that it had previously backed. Ever since, the army has been embroiled in a civil war against regional militia, leaving the economy largely wrecked and civil liberties in tatters. The junta has also jailed other filmmakers including Ma Aeint and Maung Thein Dan as well as journalists and photographers.

‘No Heaven, But Love’ will premiere at Jeonju film festival.

South Korean sales company M-Line Distribution has boarded two LGBTQ titles set to receive their world premieres at Jeonju International Film Festival – Han Jay’s teen romance No Heaven, But Love and KimJho Gwang-soo’s office romance The New Employee: The Movie.

No Heaven, But Love marks the second feature of director Han after 2020’s Take Me Home and will screen in the Korean Competition section of the festival, which runs April 27 to May 6.

Ska-funk-rock-punk-metal masters Fishbone have shared the new song “All We Have Is Now,” which is included on the Bottle Music for Broken People label comp via Fat Mike’s Bottles to the Ground imprint.

The track is signature Fishbone with its joyous horns and funky rhythms. Its positive lyrical message also serves as a poignant reminder to live in the present: “All we have is now.”

“Philosophically, it’s far from a new concept,” notes Fishbone’s Norwood Fisher in a press release. “Eckard Tolle, Allan Watts, Joseph Campbell and many others have contemplated and pontificated on this topic. Ice Spice has hopped on a new remix of PinkPantheress’ recent song, “Boy’s a Liar.”

For “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” PinkPantheress didn’t make any tweaks to the original’s bustling beat (co-produced with Mura Masa), letting Ice Spice drop in with a verse about a two-timing guy that’s fierce, yet a little lovelorn: “Duckin’ my shit, cause he know what I’m on/But when he hit me I’m not gonna respond/But I don’t sleep enough without you/And I can’t eat enough without you.

Well, not to your apartment — unless you happen to be one of the roommates featured in this Harry Styles segment from Thursday’s episode of The Late Late Show. To promote his new album, Styles (flanked by Corden and a camera crew) pounded the pavement in Brooklyn, looking for an apartment in which to film a music video for his song “Daylight.”

Showcasing rarely seen queer cinema from East and Southeast Asia and amplifying the voices of Asian communities in the UK

Queer East Film Festival has announced the full programme for its third edition, which runs from 18th to 29th May in London.

Following the first two successful editions, this year’s festival will bring films, audiences and filmmakers together in the cinema, while continuing to offer a chance to experience rarely-seen queer cinema from East and Southeast Asia to viewers across the UK.

At its heart, Queer East aims to amplify the voices of queer Asian communities, to challenge normative definitions of gender and sexual expression, and to introduce UK audiences to LGBTQ+ cinema that they might not otherwise get a chance to see. This year’s programme includes feature films, shorts, programmes of boundary-challenging artists’ moving image work, a Virtual Reality experience, and a TV miniseries, alongside filmmakers’ Q&As.

A24 might have found its cutest movie yet. The studio released a trailer for “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” Tuesday, which is the first feature-length mockumentary about the tiny shell with a big personality.

In the film, Marcel the Shell is on a mission to find his family. Marcel currently lives with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. They were once part of a sprawling community of shells, but they now live alone after surviving a mysterious tragedy.

“It’s pretty much common knowledge that it takes at least 20 shells to have a community,” Marcel explains in the trailer, which you can watch above. “My cousin fell asleep in a pocket, and that’s why I don’t like the saying ‘Everything comes out in the wash,’ because sometimes it doesn’t. Or sometimes it does, and they’re just a completely different person.”

The little family now lives a quiet existence.
