Over the course of six decades (1910-1970), tens of thousands of Australian Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their homes due to the assimilation policies that were in place at the time. These policies claimed that the lives of First Nations people would be improved if they became part of white society, and an effort to breed out color from the Aboriginal population was carried out. Unsurprisingly, the lives of the removed children were not improved, with studies showing that many of them developed adverse reactions to their removal like mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, among others. These children became known as The Stolen Generation, and their experiences left a black mark in Australia’s history.

Netflix has acquired “Ibelin,” a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Benjamin Ree (“The Painter and the Thief”) directed the film, which centers on a Norwegian gamer named Mats Steen, who died of a degenerative muscle disease at the age of 25. According to the official logline, “his parents mourned what they thought had been a lonely and isolated life, when they started receiving messages from online friends around the world.”
“Many of my favorite documentary films and series of all time have been distributed by Netflix,” Ree said in a statement. “It’s a huge honor that Ibelin will now be on Netflix and Mats Steen’s story will be available to so many millions of people across the world. I couldn’t be more excited.”
Before the film’s premiere, Ree told Variety he hopes that “Ibelin” portrays the video game community in a positive light.

U.K. sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide rights, excluding Australia and New Zealand, to thriller “Birdeater.”
The debut feature from filmmaking duo Jack Clark and Jim Weir follows a bride-to-be who is invited to join her own fiancé’s bachelor party on a remote property in the Australian outback. But as the festivities spiral into beer-soaked chaos, uncomfortable details about their relationship are exposed, and the celebration soon becomes a feral nightmare.
Blue Finch describes the film as “an unapologetic look at how Australia’s iconic masculine identity has become incompatible with contemporary gender politics.” The film stars Shabana Azeez (“Run Rabbit Run”) and Mackenzie Fearnley (“Operation Buffalo”) as the soon-to-be-wedded couple. Written by Clark, the film is produced by Stephanie Troost and Ulysses Oliver of Breathless Films. The Australian and New Zealand rights are with Umbrella Entertainment.

Indie studio XYZ Films has promoted Maxime Cottray to the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Cottray previously served as XYZ’s Executive Vice President. Since 2021, Cottray has closed the acquisition and financing of several titles such as Matthew Johnson’s Berlin competition title Blackberry and the Sundance breakout Run Rabbit Run, which was picked up by Netflix. Demonic possession is all the rage in Hollywood. This year alone, we’ve been haunted by Huesera: The Bone Woman, Attachment, Evil Dead Rise, Talk to Me, It Lives Inside, Run Rabbit Run, and The Nun II. Hell, they even rebooted The Exorcist with Ellen Burstyn and cast none other than Russell Crowe as a boozy Italian man of the cloth who locks horns with al diavolo. Now there’s In the Fire, a new film from director Conor Allyn (No Man’s Land).

Daina Reid's "Run Rabbit Run," now streaming on Netflix, is a slow burn that never quite unravels the truth, leaving the audience with more questions than answers. The film constantly obfuscates reality, forcing viewers to wonder what is genuine, supernatural, or the psychological unbalance of the main character Sarah. Sarah Snook gives a hard-edged performance as a single mother whose daughter Mia (an adorably eerie Lily Latorre) has started imitating her sister Alice who has been missing since she was a little girl.
In an interview with Nightmarish Conjurings, Reid says that her film explores "what happens when you suppress an incredibly traumatic event" and "notions of culpability." Reid filters Sarah's intense, repressed emotions through perplexing scenes that prompt doubt about whether or not what you're looking at is real or in Sarah's head. Alongside this psychological tension is familiar horror iconography: a seemingly possessed child, unexplained nosebleeds, and...

Joining Griffiths on the show are Rima Te Wiata (“The Wheel of Time”), Danielle Cormack (“Wentworth”), Robbie Magasiva (“Bad Behaviour”), Martin Henderson (“Virgin River”) and newcomer Ariāna Osborne.
The series, which started shooting on location this week, is based on Antonia Murphy’s unpublished memoir about an American woman who opened an ethical escort agency in New Zealand after the country decriminalized sex work. Scripted TV series based on the Jennifer Lopez film “Hustlers” and the Mila Kunis comedy “Bad Moms” will soon be put into development as part of a new distribution agreement between STXfilms and Lionsgate, the companies announced Wednesday.
STXfilms, which released “Hustlers” from 2019 and “Bad Moms” from 2016 along with its sequel “A Bad Moms Christmas” in 2017, are just two of the 75-library titles under which Lionsgate will now handle marketing and distribution. It also means Lionsgate will theatrically domestically distribute new STXfilms releases.
The first film to be released under the new deal is “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” a thriller starring Daisy Ridley and directed by Neil Burger. Lionsgate will now jointly release the film with Roadside Attractions on October 6.
Nothing is in the works just yet on the “Hustlers” or “Bad Moms” front, and it’s unclear if any of the original cast or crew from either movie will...

Saying goodbye to "Succession" was a struggle for the fans, but it wasn't any easier for the show's all-star cast. Luckily for them, they were able to snag some mementos from the set before they had to part with their beloved characters for good. Sarah Snook, whose performance as Shiv earned her an Emmy nomination, was not shy about grabbing some sentimental items from the prop closet — as well as her character's incredibly chic wardrobe. As it turns out, she wasn't the only cast member who took a few things with them. But the question remains, what exactly did Snook take to remember Shiv by?
"I took some costumes," she admitted to Variety. Snook also took some fictional photographic props, even though displaying them would have been strange in practice. As she said:
"I took some photos of Shiv on the wedding day with Dad. Which was sort of like,...

This post contains spoilers for "Succession."
Everyone knows it's better to quit while you're ahead, but actually doing that can be harder than it sounds. Doubly so when we're talking about "Succession," a show that was already a critical darling before surging in popularity thanks to viewers (like myself) catching up on creator Jesse Armstrong's acidic tragicomedy about the decline of the Roy family's corporate empire during the lockdowns in 2020. Now, the show's become such a defining part of the zeitgeist, all it takes is a certain billionaire's failed rocket launch and suddenly social media is flooded by jokes about Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) reacting to the catastrophic failure of an attempted satellite launch.
It's to Armstrong's credit, then, that he ended the show at the peak of its popularity in season 4, realizing it had reached its natural conclusion. For everyone else, who had no idea what to expect from the season going in,...

Season two of The Lincoln Lawyer got off to a strong start for Netflix in the streaming rankings — but another legal drama, Suits, remained a runaway No. 1.
The Lincoln Lawyer recorded 1.41 billion minutes of viewing for the week of July 3-9; the first half of its second season premiered July 6. The viewing time is an improvement of 59 percent over its series premiere week in May 2022 — when the show had 884 million minutes of viewing — and its second-highest tally ever on the Nielsen streaming chart.
It was also the top original series for the week, moving ahead of fellow Netflix series The Witcher. The fantasy drama had 1.19 billion minutes of viewing, down a modest 9 percent from 1.31 billion minutes a week earlier.
Suits, meanwhile, spent its third straight week at No. 1 and broke its own record for single-week viewing of an acquired series on the Nielsen charts. The former USA series, which streams on Netflix and Peacock,...

Nearly four years after its last new episode aired, Suits is having a moment in the streaming world.
The former USA Network series set a viewing time record for an acquired series in the week of June 26-July 2. Suits had 3.14 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen, easily surpassing the previous mark of 2.49 billion minutes for Manifest (before it became a Netflix original) in June 2021. The show became available on Netflix June 23; it also streams on Peacock.
The huge tally for Suits dwarfed the two other shows that topped the billion-minute mark for the week: The debut of The Witcher’s third season on Netflix pushed that show to 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, and The Bear grew by 18 percent week to week to 1.01 billion minutes. The latter is the second Hulu series (and the first produced by FX) to break the billion-minute threshold for a single week, after The Handmaid’s Tale.

There were many new entries into the Netflix Top 10 film chart for the week of July 3, some new seasons of familiar TV series, as well as a new comedy movie. Read on for this week’s analysis.

The Witcher Season 3 is still holding strong on Netflix’s English-language TV list.
In its second week on the streamer, the first half of the new season drew 13.8M views (66.5M view hours divided by 4.82 runtime hours) for the week of July 3 to 9. That’s down slightly from the 15.2M views the episodes managed in their first few days on the platform following its June 29 debut.
Season 3 has managed 29M views since launch. It’s still quite a ways away from making the most popular TV list, as it would need to crack 79M views. But it’s only been two weeks, and there is still plenty of time in Netflix’s new 91-day measurement window for the season to make it — especially with the second half of the season yet to be released.

Three VOD charts and Netflix’s top 10 all resulted in films set in non-Earth planetary worlds leading the pack in home viewing. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney) is #1 on VOD (at $19.99) at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, while “65,” four months after its theatrical release and multiple weeks scoring on VOD, tops Netflix’s movie chart.
“Galaxy” had a two-month window, as Disney increasingly slows down its initial home releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” waited 100 days), and then to PVOD, not streaming. It was dominant enough that it led Vudu’s revenue-based list, even though it was only available for three of the seven days of their full-week rankings.

The report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.
Older Millennials (ages 35-44) overindexed by nearly 10% compared to the average household, the highest margin of any age group. Yet the initial drop of five episodes this season has seen fewer viewers compared to last season, with the series experiencing a 15% decline between the most recent season and the Season 2 premiere.

Once again. “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) ($5.99) is #1 at iTunes and Google Play, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $19.99 (Universal) is #1 at Vudu.
Like most weeks, Netflix’s top 10 movie list is topsy-turvy. New at #1 is “Run Rabbit Run,” an Australian horror film the streamer acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. It stars “Succession” actress Sarah Snook as a fertility doctor who notices her daughter’s strange behavior.
Beyond that, “Mario” is in two second-place spots while “Fast X” is #2 at Vudu, helped by its $19.99 price. “The Covenant” (MGM) is #3 at iTunes, “The Machine” (Sony) at $19.99 #3 at Vudu, with “Fast X” taking third at Google Play.

Admit it: You would totally want to watch Shiv from Succession go toe to toe with a supernatural bad bunny.
That’s how Run Rabbit Run sells itself initially, or at least it’s the general direction that this Australian horror film points you toward. You’ve got Sarah Snook, a strong contender among many for the Most Valuable Player of HBO’s hit show, playing a single mother — also named Sarah — who’s already a little edgy when we meet her. And you’ve got a mysterious rabbit that shows up on her doorstep,...

Sarah Snook has made a lot of noise as the smart and suave businesswoman Siobhan Roy in the Emmy-winning series Succession. After the series came to a resounding end in recent months, Sarah Snook is back once more, and she even plays a character named Sarah. However, this time, the character is nothing like the confident and charismatic Shiv, but a woman who struggles to come to terms with the events that happen around her. Snook plays Dr. Sarah, a single mother in Run Rabbit Run, who starts noticing certain strange behaviors in her daughter Mia ever since the child celebrated her seventh birthday. Here’s a detailed look into the complex character of Dr. Sarah Gregory in the movie Run Rabbit Run.
From the get-go, Dr. Sarah seems rather indifferent towards the repeated calls that come from the old-age care facility that houses a woman named Joan, while catering...

Is grief the new trend in horror media? I’m not sure if I’m the only one noticing this pattern in a lot of horror movies lately; Smile, The Boogeyman, and M3GAN are what I can think of off the top of my head, but it’s definitely a theme many are exploring recently. Run Rabbit Run definitely doesn’t fall into the popcorn category that the aforementioned movies do, but it does follow some jump scare tropes that don’t pay off because of the slow-burn direction the movie actually takes. There’s an eerie atmosphere throughout, which could be chilling if you were seated in a quiet theater, but for something to put on at home, I think it falls short of packing a punch. The movie revolves around a woman named Sarah, who is dealing with her father’s death while trying to take care of her young daughter,...

There weren’t too many surprises in Netflix’s Top 10 chart for the week of June 19 with Chris Hemsworth‘s action sequel “Extraction 2” holding strong and Charlie Brooker‘s “Black Mirror” Season 6 taking over the TV chart. Read on for this week’s analysis. (A quick reminder that Netflix recently changed their system to focus on total actual views vs. hours viewed.)
Hemsworth held the Top 2 spots with “Extraction 2” and the original “Extraction,” which had 42.2 million views and 13.8 million, respectively. “Extraction 2” had 87.3 million hours viewed just this week, which should eventually get it into Netflix’s most-watched list along with the original “Extraction.” It was the #1 most-watched film in over 85 territories.
There were two new entries in third and fourth place on the English language film chart, the documentary “Take Care of Maya” about a 10-year-old with a rare illness, which got 9.2 million views, and the Tia Williams...

“In all my career, I’ve never felt a room like you,” said Warwick Thornton, the First Nations Australian director, after the screening of his film “The New Boy,” a story of spirituality and survival set in 1940s, that was the opening night title of the Sydney Film Festival. “The energy you give back to these children…,” he said before tailing off.
It was a churning, heartfelt moment that contrasted with Thornton’s bouncy earlier appearance on stage, when he joshed about having told the eight untrained school-age kids in his cast never to look directly at the camera while on set. And how he had to reverse that advice for when they, along with producer Kath Shelper, dominated the red carpet at Sydney’s grand State Theatre. Smile and wave for the paparazzi.
The film had premiered last month in competition at Cannes and was overlooked for major awards.

It’s hard to say goodbye to an ensemble cast as talented as Succession’s. Even though we won’t get to see them perform together every week, at least we can find comfort in knowing that this isn’t the last time we’ll see these actors share their talents with the world. While many movie and TV productions are on hold right now due to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ (AMPTP) inability to meet the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) reasonable terms, there are still several upcoming projects featuring the incredibly skilled members of Succession, both on the stage and the screen, that are worth keeping an eye on.

Sarah Snook is stuck in a twisted game of hide and seek with the daughter she thought she knew.
The “Succession” actress leads Daina Reid’s feature directorial debut “Run Rabbit Run,” which premiered at 2023 Sundance. Snook plays Sarah, a mother and fertility doctor whose own daughter Mia’s behavior drastically becomes more and more unhinged upon her seventh birthday. A surprise pet rabbit present unlocks Mia’s (Lily Latorre) memories of a supposed past life, and sending Sarah down a rabbit hole of horror.
Damon Herriman and Greta Scacchi also star.
Director Reid has previously helmed episodes of “The Shining Girls” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” both starring Elisabeth Moss who was once attached to “Run Rabbit Run.” The script is penned by Australian novelist Hannah Kent, with an original idea developed by Carver Films. Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw of Carver serve as producers, with Snook executive producing along with director Reid.

When we first heard about the horror thriller project Run Rabbit Run back in 2020, The Invisible Man‘s Elisabeth Moss was set to star in the film – but by the time it went into production, Emmy nominee Sarah Snook, best known for her role on the HBO series Succession, had taken the lead. The film will be available to watch through the Netflix streaming service as of June 28th, and with that date swiftly approaching Netflix has unveiled a trailer. "You don't like me. You make me hide and hide." Netflix has revealed their official trailer for an indie horror film titled Run Rabbit Run, which first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It received mixed reviews, despite being one of the most talked about horror films premiering in the Midnight section of the festival. Sarah Snook plays a fertility doctor who believes firmly in life and death, but after noticing the strange behavior of her young daughter, must challenge her own values and confront a ghost from her past. Seems like it will have some scary twists. Described as a "exquisitely fine-tuned psychological thriller, elegantly incorporating unsettling visual and aural cues to signal how destabilized Sarah’s world has become." Also starring Lily Latorre, Damon Herriman, and Greta Scacchi. Alas this trailer doesn't make this look any better than the mixed reviews I heard from Sundance,...
